India's Love Affair With Gold

Last night, I watched the 60 Minutes segment, India's love affair with gold. ... And it reminded me again, how "diamonds were truly never my best friend!" Don't know a thing about them ... which certainly leaves me admitting I don't own a rock, better yet a chip of a rock! Nor, do I care. Certainly don't feel the least bit, worse for wear!

I love pearls, simply cause as a child my dad would buy them for me. ... And 'though I hated Literature in St.Joseph's Convent in St.Lucia, I could never quite get the narrative from John Steinbeck's "The Pearl" out of my mind!

"An accident could happen to these oysters, a grain of sand could lie in the folds of muscle and irritate the flesh until in self-protection the flesh coated the grain with a layer of smooth cement. But once started, the flesh continued to coat the foreign body until it fell free in some tidal flurry or until the oyster was destroyed. For centuries men had dived down and torn the oysters from the beds and ripped them open, looking for the coated grains of sand. Swarms of fish lived near the bed to live near the oysters thrown back by the searching men and to nibble at the shining inner shells. But forget my love affair with pearls, I love gold too! Probably one of the first gifts given to me, and still appreciated when given to me. ... And thanks to a love affair with East Indian and Arab cultures, the more intricate and detailed the gold, the more enamored I am, as I've gotten older!

A few years ago, for my 31st birthday, a few friends and I visited Dubai ... and the Dubai gold souk was a sight to behold! Since it was my birthday, my husband bought me a beautiful very detailed bracelet.

My appreciation for the mere beauty of GOLD came when I was invited to my college friend, Archita's sister's wedding in New York City, the summer of 1998. So "when in Rome" ... I decided, I had to wear a sari to the wedding. So my college bestie, the very person who invited me to my very first Trinidad carnival, Alisha and I went hunting the streets of NYC, looking for a sari for me! LOL! (Alisha also came to Dubai with me for my b'day.) ... And when I hear a tassa drum or when I start to position my fingers to do an Indian dance, my friend Alisha comes to mind!

A Western wedding certainly has nothing on an Indian Wedding which goes on for days! ... And my goodness from a traditional Western - white wedding, an Indian wedding is ALL COLOR. Color, color, color. .... AND GOLD! It is the most beautiful sight! ... And I like how the Indian culture plays on virtue and innocence which makes it even more seductive.

So before the Grammy's last night 60 Minutes revealed "India's Love Affair With Gold." Now I'm madly in love too and have a new respect for it! Hopefully, this encourages you to hold on to the gold you do have, and start the tradition of passing it on to generations to come! Enjoy ...

Just great! Days before I head home to the Caribbean ... St.Lucia and then Trinidad, 4 pimples pop up in a line from my hairline to my outer left lip. Why now? Why F-O-U-R? Not cute.

I can't tell you how happy I am to be using a loofah during bath time again. I don't know why we separated in the first place.

Yesterday evening, this video 'HeartBeat" by Childish Gambino premiered on BET 106 & Park. I HEART the simplicity of this video! Sexy and refreshing. Instantly, the video felt so Miguel-esque. I also felt a bit of Pharrell and Kanye in his delivery of his rhymes.

Strangely, at the time of the premiere of the Childish Gambino video I was searching for Miguel's music on Youtube. Simply because I had posted a video by a new female rapper Azealia Banks on FB. (Soon will post here now that I've mentioned her. 'Though her song is raunchy as hell but I am a fan. I should probably call this Music Saturday). Anyway a friend asked if he could steal (as in share) Azealia's song, also asking if I listened to Miguel's entire album. A suggestion given to me a few weeks ago that I had not yet fulfilled.

... And even stranger, earlier in the day, I remembered seeing Miguel perform, "Lotus Flower Bomb" with D.C rapper Wale on the Wendy Williams Show. Miguel changed up the way he sang those notes. LOVED IT. I can't tell you how much I love Wale's "Lotus FLower Bomb" except for "Let me teach you all the sounds of love. Ahhhh, ayyyyy, eeeeee, ahh ohh ooo!" LOL.

By evening and the premiere of "HeartBeat", I had watched Miguel's "Sure Thing" video again. And it's hard not to notice the girl in that video. She is fine! My friend went on to say, and I have to agree, "Yep. Miguel definitely owns his style ... and his selection for his videos is impeccable. :-) ... unlike dat boy Drake, can't do a video to save his life though his songs are tight."

So I started to Google, Childish Gambino ...

Actor-turned-rapper Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) is a comedy writer for the show 30 Rock with Tina Fey. Late last year, in an interview with Rocsi and Terrence, he spoke about doing some collaborations and admits that he loves Miguel. He has even made it to the stage of the Late Show with David Letterman.

Recently, I saw this segment on The View, "Bank on The View - Love and Money! " The advice from Carmen Wong Ulrich, Good Housekeeping's money advice columnist is valuable to ladies (and gents) about money in relationships!

Remember my past Sweet 7 post, "Pet Peeve - A Cheap Person"? It got one of the most reactions to any Sweet 7 post ever. Well this money segment may give you a clearer understanding of my pet peeve, particularly a cheap man in a relationship! You know the 'split the bill' types ... utter nonsense, if you ask me! So basically this segment confirmed my belief, watch the 'spending behavior of a man' ... 'cause actions speak louder than words!

Next month, is my 11th year wedding anniversary. 'Though a pre-nup was never part of the conversation when we got married, I always swore if a man asked me to sign a pre-nup, I'd tell him "we ain't doing this!" ... marriage that is! LOL! I've always been anti-pre-nup! Anyway this segment, finally made me say, "GET THE DAMN PRE-NUP! SIGN IT FAST" LOL!

Ohh ... I love The View co-host, Whoopi Goldberg. She's in one of my favorite movies, "The Color Purple," the other is "Titanic". Anyway I love Whoopi because she and I share the same birthdate so no doubt, I know we are on the same astrological wave length. I trust her constant "Mmm hhmmmms!" I know she's talking from experience ... been there, done that! LOL!

I am very cynical ... and don't trust a soul! ... And watching Dateline every Friday night from as far back as I can remember does not help. I have seen lovers, husbands, wives turn to cold murderers. Children have killed parents. Parents have killed children. And strangers have done the unthinkable to the very young to the very old! I trust no one!

Time and time again, I tell my husband the importance of not letting our children out of his sight. With that, I say, "If anything were to happen, I'D KILL YOU!" So after I type this post, believe that I am forwarding him this on Facebook. LOL!

My five year old daughter has been trained to walk beside me at all times, so much so she's a child who will hold my hand when out and about. Another reason why I stress that it be done ... car parking lots. Drivers who might be reversing may not see a child behind their vehicle. So I always tell my husband .. you basically have to give 'her' height. If she's beside him, a car will sooner see him than her!

So imagine when I saw this video on the news today, I AM ABOUT TO GIVE THE GOSPEL! When done, I will share my advice and tips picked up along the way having watched numerous Dateline murder mysteries. 'Cause knowing what I know and now having seen this video, "THIS IS JUST THE WORLD WE LIVE IN ... "

Story here ... Man Tried To Abduct Child From Bremen WalMart

MY TIPS:

1. If anyone tries to abduct you (or your child) ... SCREAM as loud as you can! Say something like, "I'm being abducted." Teach your kids to shout out "This is not my mom or my dad!" DRAW ATTENTION TO THE SITUATION.

2. When I was in college, our house had a security alarm. And yes, it had gone off on at least 2 occasions, due to me opening the door to the garage without turning off the alarm. Well, first I'd get a call from the security company, just verifying all was well. Next I'd have to give them the security password. Thirdly, the Miami-Dade Police would come a few minutes later knocking at the front door. ... And again, making certain all was in order. So my parents taught me this, if I was being held under duress by an intruder, from the onset to GIVE THE SECURITY COMPANY THE WRONG PASSCODE. ... And do it over and over again. So they would have the police come to the house immediately and hopefully would check around the house.

3. If you're walking and a car stops beside you ... and the abductor tries to call you or grab you, RUN IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF WHICH THE CAR IS FACING.

4. Now that I am back to babies and car seats. I spend a lot of un-necessary time putting a baby in a car seat, leaving me vulnerable cause my back is turned. But just being who I am, I am constantly looking over my shoulders. In fact, once I see someone approaching, I get pensive. I begin to grab my keys and fist them, gearing up to use my keys as knives if I have to. So I squeeze my keys in my fist, but leave a key sticking out between my middle finger or my index or ring finger, ready to stab as hard as I can if someone attempts to mess with me.

5. ... And if all fails, and you've been a VICTIM, may it be rape, kidnap or murder. I always tell my daughter ... BITE AND OR SCRATCH THE F. OUT OF THE PERPETRATOR! I have seen too many Dateline cases where by the time it got to the courts, there was just no evidence! ... And even if your life is taken, F.UP the FK'r so that there is enough evidence. Leave enough DNA under your nails from scratching their skin, get their blood too. Go deep. Bite hard too, so that your teeth marks remain on their body! Let your loved ones have the peace of knowing that your perpetrator will pay for the crime!

Cathy: We speak to the kids about staying calm and not panicking. Then trying to kick out the back lights of the vehicle or get some way to knock it out. By doing so it will cause other motorist to pay attention to the vehicle. They should then stick their hands out through the hole they created and wave frantically. That should get someone's attention. Chances are if the person shoves you in the boot of a vehicle they haven't had the chance to tie you up so this should give you mobilisation to kick in the back lights.
