The Fort Hood shooting hit pretty close to home for me. I was stationed at Fort Hood for 6 years and had been in that building many times. I still have many friends there. It is very unfortunate that there are people such as MAJ Nidal Malik Hasan who would commit such atrocious acts of violence. My prayers are certainly with those who have been affected by this tragedy.

Now that I have calmed down a bit, I would like to cover a couple of things relating to this incident. The President’s actions as well as how the media responds to violent acts in the name of Islam.

On the day of the shooting, President Obama was to attend a Tribal Nations conference hosted by the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Indian affairs. He was there, of course, to promote the health care plan that would come to a vote over the weekend. Many, including myself, thought that the President should have canceled this appearance because of the Fort Hood incident, but Obama did not. He instead decided to address the American people from this scheduled event. I can understand this logic, but I cannot understand the insensitive and detached way the President addressed the public. Here is the video of his remarks.

Obama Comments on Fort Hood Incident

You will notice that he opens by casually expressing his greetings to the people attending the conference instead of addressing the nation. He then gives a “shout out” to Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Dr. Joe Medicine Crow. Dr. Crow was a recipient of the Medal of Freedom, not the Congressional Medal of Honor. Obama then spent the next 2 minutes making general comments about the conference and health care before even bringing up the topic of the Fort Hood shooting. At this time he finally made some appropriate comments about the incident.

All I can say is that I was extremely disappointed in the Commander in Chief’s response to this tragedy.

The President is scheduled to attend a memorial today at the base. Again I think he should already be there. He spent Saturday trying to convince those in his own party to vote along party lines in favor of Pelosi’s legislation. He should have been on his way to Fort Hood. He is the Commander in Chief. He should have been with the troops. If he needed time to pressure his comrades to pass his agenda, he could have told Pelosi to hold the vote later this week instead of rushing it through around midnight on Saturday. Once again his actions were inappropriate.

I also find issue with the media and their PC response to incidents of violence in the name of Islam. Violence that the Koran teaches. Just like everyone else, I was reading the updates at work. I read on Fox News hours after the attack that the FBI had ruled out terrorism. This despite the fact that MAJ Hasan was shouting “Allahu Akbar” (God is great). The same phrase shouted by many suicide bombers and also by Iranians recently celebrating the anniversary of the US embassy seizure. Of course their chants of Allahu Akbar were combined with chants of death to America. By now we do know that Islam had something to do with this incident. MAJ Hasan recently started wearing traditional Arabic garb during off hours. He also was under investigation for some radical internet postings and on numerous occasions made very disturbing comments to his co-workers about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. These comments included calling these conflicts wars against Islam and saying that Muslims should stand up and fight against the aggressor. I think the problem may be that Islam is at war against us. We just refuse to believe it. Apologists exist everywhere. The media will point out these troubling things about Hasan, but they will also be quick to point out that Islam does not teach violence.

I saw in one article that Iman Mohammed Abdullahi from Hasan’s Mosque in Washington D.C. stressed that “Islam is not responsible”. Another Sheikh from the same mosque said that “Islam does not command anybody to do something like that”. The majority of the time these statements go unquestioned. I even saw a news story here in Houston on Channel 13 News where a reporter passed on from her interviewee that Islam does not teach this kind of violence. No questions asked. While many mosques probably do not teach violence and many Muslims do not advocate it, it does exist, and it is based on the teachings of the Koran.

“When you meet the unbelievers in the battlefield, strike off their heads, and when you have laid them low, bind your captives firmly” Qur’an 47:4

“Prophet, make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites and deal rigorously with them. Hell shall be their home: an evil fate” Qur’an 9:73

There are over a hundred more verses calling on Muslims to make war against the unbelievers. What is their response to these teachings as well as many others. These are the questions that need to be asked of those who proclaim a peaceful and tolerant religion. We need to be honest and upfront about what is going on here; not PC a problem into non-existence.

Late Saturday night Pelosi had her hurried vote on Obamacare and it passed. The vote was 220-215 (219 democrats and 1 republican voted for while 39 democrats and 176 republicans voted against). You can see the roll call here.

The lone republican that voted for the legislation was Joseph Cao of Louisiana, representing New Orleans. His vote was bought by Obama himself. He was assured by Obama over the phone that he would help Louisiana with the FMAP crisis and community disaster loan forgiveness if he voted in favor. Your obligatory pay to play political move of the day.

The legislation got enough votes from more conservative democrats by a last minute amendment that would ban abortion funding in the government plan or in any subsidized private plan. Ironically this breaks one of Obama’s promises to Planned Parenthood so now he is breaking promises to both sides. We will have to see if this amendment holds throughout the process…these little things tend to disappear.

Another side note to breaking promises. Democrat Bill Owens, who was elected to NY district 23 last week in the special election broke 4 campaign promises in his first hour, all relating to health care. He campaigned that he was against the health care legislation as it was currently written, but then evidently changed his mind. You will find his name on the list of ayes. If I was a voter in NY district 23 I would feel like an idiot right about now. Voting for a liberal thinking he will vote in a conservative manner. Genius.

Pelosi cannot take the sole responsibility for the abomination passed Saturday. Bill Owens’ lead campaigner (Barack Obama) did his part in passing this legislation as well. The President pressured democrats all day to vote in favor of the bill and not break party lines. He told them “If you think the Republicans are not going to go after you if you vote no, think again.” What a perfect example of the type of person Obama truly is. His calls to top three health care lobbyist groups that evening to thank them for their support and his late night email to Organizing for America asking for more money are also great examples of what this President is about. I hate to tell him though, it is not Republicans or his lobbyist friends they should worry about; it is the American people. More and more people are seeing through this façade.

I did get a kick out of one thing though. In all of Pelosi’s celebration she inadvertently made some true statements. She compared the passage of this legislation to the passage of Social Security and Medicare. How correct she is. Both have led to increased government power, our entitlement society, and lack of personal responsibility. They are also both bankrupting our country. Great analogy Ms. Pelosi. We can definitely add your legislation to that list. A list of mistakes made by our beloved Congress.

The next step belongs to the Senate. I have already heard from some places that it is DOA. Lets hope that is true. We do not need to repeat our past mistakes. We are now paying for FDR’s short sighted policies. Lets not do the same to our grandchildren.

Here is a question answer dialogue between Pelosi and a reporter from The Weekly Standard on September 24.

TWS: Madam Speaker, do you support the measure to put the final House bill online for 72 hours before it’s voted on at the very end?

PELOSI: Absolutely. Without question.

Well, Pelosi had her fingers crossed because the Bill is not final and she is pushing for a Saturday vote. There is absolutely no reasonable explanation for why Congress is trying to rush through this legislation, but there are some logical ones that I can come up with.

One, Obama needs this legislation to pass quickly because like I mentioned before he needs it before his Afghanistan decision. His latest excuse for not making a decision of General McCrystal’s recommendations was he wanted to wait until there was resolution with the Afghan elections. Well, that situation is resolved and still no decision.

The second and equally despicable reason is that they do not want the American public to fully understand what is in the legislation. The last time they waited too long there was public outrage. Remember Obama’s initial goal was to get it passed before the first Congressional recess…before they would have to face their constituents. Like the TARP and the Stimulus, they wanted to pass it before people realized what was going on. They do not want you to see things such as this except revealed by Rep John Boehner.

“On line 17, p. 110 Section 222, under “Abortions for which Public Funding is Allowed” the Health and Human Services Secretary is given the authority to determine when abortion is allowed under the government-run plan. The Speaker’s plan also requires that at least one insurance plan offered in the Exchange covers abortions. What is even more alarming is that a monthly abortion premium will be charged of all enrollees in the government-run plan. It’s right there on line 16, page 96, Section 213, under “Insurance Rating Rules.” The premium will be paid into a U.S. Treasury account - and these federal funds will be used to pay for the abortion services. Section 213 describes the process in which the Health Benefits Commissioner is to assess the monthly premiums that will be used to pay for elective abortions under the government-run plan. The Commissioner must charge at a minimum $1 per enrollee per month.”

The GOP members of Congress have put together a 30 page summary of Pelosi’s new legislation. You can read it here.

I have copied and pasted the upfront bullet points from this summary to give an overview of what this particular legislation does.

Creation of a government-run health plan that experts say would result in up to 114 million Americans losing their current coverage-a clear violation of any pledge to allow individuals to keep their current health plan;

Nearly half a trillion dollars in tax increases on certain income filers, a majority of whom are small businesses-and $729.5 billion in tax increases overall;

Insurance regulations that would raise costs for nearly all Americans, particularly young Americans, and confine choice of plans to those approved by a board of bureaucrats;

New price controls on health insurance companies that provide perverse incentives to keep individuals sick rather than managing chronic disease, while impeding patient access to important services just because those services do not provide a direct clinical benefit;

Additional federal mandates that would significantly erode the flexibility currently provided to employers-and could result in firms dropping coverage;

Massive expansion of Medicaid to all individuals with incomes below 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Level ($33,075 for a family of four), replacing the existing private health coverage of millions with taxpayer-funded health care-and imposing tens of billions of dollars in new unfunded mandates on States;

Denial of health plan choice to 15 million Americans, consigning them instead to a Medicaid program riddled with bureaucratic obstacles and poor access to care, such that its own beneficiaries do not consider it “real insurance;”

Language opening employers operating group health plans to State law remedies and private causes of action-subjecting employers to review by 50 different State court rulings, thereby raising costs and encouraging more employers to drop their current health plans;

Liability “reforms” intended to ensure trial lawyers do not have their compensation reduced, rather than meaningful changes that would reduce the cost of health care by eliminating wasteful defensive medicine practices;

Establishment of a bureaucrat-run health Exchange that would abolish the private market for individual insurance outside the Exchange-and could evolve into a single-payer approach due to the Exchange’s ability to cannibalize existing employer plans;

Creation of a new government board, the “Health Benefits Advisory Committee,” that would empower federal bureaucrats to impose new mandates on individuals and insurance carriers;

Taxation of individuals who do not purchase a level of health coverage that meets the diktats of a board of bureaucrats-including those who cannot afford the coverage options provided;

New, job-killing taxes-$135 billion worth-on employers who cannot afford to provide their workers health insurance, resulting in up to 5.5 million lost jobs, according to a model developed by President Obama’s chief economic advisor;

Penalties as high as $500,000 on employers who make honest mistakes when filing paperwork with the government health board-which would likely dissuade businesses from continuing to provide coverage, increasing enrollment in the bureaucrat-run Exchange;

“Low-income” health insurance subsidies to a family of four making up to $88,200;

Arbitrary and harmful cuts to popular Medicare Advantage plans that would result in millions of seniors losing their current health coverage; and

Expanded price controls on pharmaceutical products that would discourage companies from producing life-saving breakthrough treatments.

As you read these points and the summary itself, you will see a theme emerging. It starts with the healthcare mandate (which Pelosi does not think has serious constitutional implications) and then regulates private industry into non-existence. Here are the general problems I see right away after my first reading. And if the vote goes down Saturday like Pelosi wants it will be the only reading I get.

The mandate. With this mandate come fines and taxes on businesses and individuals.

There is provision after provision giving advantages to the government plan. This contradicts Obama’s notion that the plans will operate on equal terms.

Numerous bureaucracies are created. This breeds inefficiency and will take decision making away from the people and their doctors.

The existing entitlements are increased and entirely new entitlements are created. This is more burden and more costs. They have used gimmicks to hide the actual costs. Basically they front loaded the taxes and fines and back loaded entry into the system for cost estimate purposes. They also do not include the Medicare payment increase.

There is also very little restrictions to what the Health Czar can do. This freedom will push us even more quickly to a single payer system and give too much power to the executive branch.

Forces      taxpayers to fund abortions.

Hopefully pressure comes down to hold the vote until our representatives have time to really digest what is in it, but I doubt it. If they were truly concerned about reform and not their agenda then there would be no rush. But they want power and an ever expanding federal government, not reform. Another promise down the drain.

So the cycle continues. We are moving more and more towards dependency upon our government. Instead of tackling the true problems, our legislators once again are doubling up with bandages. And with bandages that we do not have. I guess this can kind of be expected now with the entitlement society that we live in and the liberal economic policies that have ushered in these problems. I would like to point out a couple of things though.

First the $8,000 first time homebuyer credit, which was extended with this deal. It has only been open since April, but there have already been nearly 100,000 cases of fraud. According to the WSJ 19,000 never even bought a house and over 500 cases involved people under the age of 18, including one “pre-K housing whiz.” Over 50 cases were from IRS agents themselves. In addition to the fraud, things such as these artificially affect the housing market much like the teaser rates did before the crisis. In the end it is yet another example of what happens when the government steps in and tries to help. Remember Reagan’s wisdom….”The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, I’m from the government and I’m here to help.” How true.

I also saw an interesting note on how they plan to pay for the extension of unemployment benefits. It will be done by extending the federal unemployment tax that employers pay for each employee through June of 2011. So we pay for unemployment by forcing those who would make new hires pay additional taxes. Genius. (If I may steal a line from a particular brewer.)

If you ask Obama he will call these things necessary and he will also blame someone else for his inability to turn things around. Guess who that is. That’s right, Bush. On the one year anniversary of his historic election Obama was in Wisconsin once again reminding everyone that all of these problems were inherited. Some leader.

Not that this is breaking news or anything, but Republican Bob McDonnell won in Virgina and Republican Chris Christie won in New Jersey yesterday. Both governor wins put a black mark on Obama’s influence as I mentioned recently how he campaigned strongly for both of these candidates. The White House tried to play down the defeats saying that these elections had nothing to do with Obama or his policies. I believe that about as much as I believe that Obama does not support a single payer plan. They even said Obama was not monitoring the polls as they came in. I doubt that.

New Jersey is a liberal stronghold, but I was still surprised that Jon Corzine got as many votes as he did. Over 900,000 of them. It is a very depressing side note in this saga. That he could get that many votes shows the lack of moral fiber in our society. Just check out his history and you will see what I mean. But at least he lost.

Another positive from yesterday was that Maine voters rejected a law that would allow same sex marriage. That’s 31-0 for us backward rednecks.

And since I am rambling on about non-related things anyways, I wonder if anyone else out there saw Pelosi’s answer to a question about the health care mandate here recently.

Q: “Madam Speaker, where specifically does the Constitution grant Congress the authority to enact an individual health insurance mandate?

Pelosi: “Are you serious? Are you serious?”

But do not worry, her press spokesman Nadeam Elshami clarified it later. “You can put this on the record. That is not a serious question. That is not a serious question.”

What can you say? I guess constitutional questions are not serious. I imagine there are a few founding fathers rolling over in their graves about now.

There are many that believe that there is nothing wrong with expanding the federal government. Many of these people are your Obama die-hards. The Michael Moore anti-capitalists who use capitalism to get rich wannabes ignore the many historical examples of how dangerous and inefficient the government is, despite any good intentions. So the next time someone tries to argue that the government should be given more responsibility and power over our lives, ie… health care, here are a few examples you can throw at them.

I will start with some historical cost predictions in health care itself. And for argument sake I will not even cover the socialized health care systems that are in dire straights around the globe. What about our own Medicare system. It was predicted in 1990 that Medicare would cost the taxpayer $12 Billion dollars. The actual number. $110 Billion in 1990. They were off by nearly a factor of 10. Massachusetts, a state that recently started a universal health care program had the same prediction problem. A predicted cost of $472 million turned out to be $628 million in reality. A difference of $156 million. By the way, they are already rationing care. Our government consistently underestimates the costs of health care so why in the world would we trust the numbers they are showing us today. Especially from an administration who fudges stimulus job numbers and economic projections to make themselves look better.

Amtrak is another one of my favorite examples. Nixon started Amtrak in 1971 with $141 million in taxpayer funds with the prediction that it would be self sufficient in 3 years. I guess it never fulfilled its potential because it has never had a profitable year. But instead of letting it fail, our beloved Congress subsidizes it to the tune of a billion plus dollars a year. A quick check with Wikipedia will show you that government intervention back in 1910 was the beginning of the end for this industry. Government intervention into private industry could be the theme of this administration and just like the good old days, they do more damage than good.

Another rationale of the Obamaites for the government health care plan is that the government plan and private industry can coexist. Competition will be fair. I promise. Well, unfortunately for liberals, history has also given us a great example to combat what logic will not. They are our friends Fannie and Freddie. I wrote about it here in this post , and here is a link to the congressional report. The report shows how the GSE’s relationship with the government gave them an unfair advantage in the mortgage market. It also illustrates the corruption and waste that is inevitable when the government gets involved. I do not think I have to show the idiocy of Obama’s post office analogy again. That was a good one though.

For those who are allergic to historical references there are a couple of recent events that illustrate the evils of government intervention. Mainly Cash for Clunkers and the Stimulus. A recent report revealed that the taxpayer ultimately paid $24,000 per car sold under the cash for clunkers program. Congressmen and this administration were so proud of the supposed success of this program that they rushed more money into it so it could be extended. Turns out it was not so great. Classic shortsighted syndrome. In the end, Edmunds actually determined that the sales numbers would have been better without the program. Go figure.

And then there is the ever famous Stimulus. ”We might never recover without it” said Obama, but then again we may never recover from it. Recently the White House released data showing only 31,000 jobs were created from the $16 billion spent so far. Then even more recently they corrected that number…seems they double counted some so the total is actually only 26,000. I will let you do the math on this inefficiency. The list of projects getting funded looks more like a ransom list from a comedy than something to stimulate the economy. Here are a few of the best and brightest projects. To make matters worse, it has been revealed that over $1.2 billion of the 16 has gone to contractors on watchdog lists for those who have broken federal and state laws.

As you can see, government intervention does not lead to good things. History is a very blunt reminder of this. So the next time someone argues that it is, question them. Don’t let them get away with arguing a point with no foundation. Remember, these people want to give more power to those who cannot even balance a budget.

Organizing for America, Barack Obama’s campaign organization, is holding a video contest. One of the finalists includes a video where an American flag is being spray painted onto a building and then is desecrated with graffiti before being according to Politico “ultimately obliterated.” This organization is run by top Obama political advisers David Plouffe and Mitch Stewart.

This is the same organization that made the following post on its website for 9/11 urging its members to call their representatives

“All 50 States are coordinating in this - as we fight back against our own Right-Wing Domestic Terrorists who are subverting the American Democratic Process, whipped to a frenzy by their Fox Propaganda Network ceaselessly re-seizing power for their treacherous leaders.”

Bringing America together huh. What America?

This is the same organization that Obama uses regularly to get his word out. After all, it is his organization. It is a major part of Obama’s perpetual campaigning. Why he still needs a campaign organization in the first place is beyond me, but I do think it is time for him to move on and start leading the country. It is time that he understands that this is not a popularity contest. That is not what being a leader is about. I also wander if this will be enough to throw someone else under the bus. The 9/11 statement was not.

The White House failed last week to push through the Medicare increase in a separate bill last week. This is a major blow to Obama and Reid’s agenda. In a post last week I mentioned how the White House was trying to pass this $247 Billion portion of health care reform as a budgetary item so they could claim their reform bill was deficit neutral. This, of course, was the plan from the very beginning. Remember when Obama announced his policy of not adding additional spending unless it was paid for (what a joke, huh). He specifically said that this policy did not include the Medicare spending. Luckily the Senate did not fall for this gimmick. 12 Democrats and 1 independent joined Republicans to stop this irresponsible action. The next thing you will hear from the Obama-ites is these Senators are preventing funding for Medicare. Just wait for it, its coming. Although it will be harder with 12 in their own ranks recognizing this stunt for what it was.

The 13 days of closed door meetings to write Obamacare are completed. This is what you call transparency. At least in a liberal world where definitions are skewed at will. And guess what is in the plan. That’s right, the public option. This time they have included another veil of State acceptance. You can read about it here on the Heritage’s blog. Here is another post.

Speaking of transparency. Did you hear about the other closed door meetings? They were with the drug companies. PhRMA agreed to contribute “$80 Billion to lower costs in exchange for avoiding downward pressure on drug prices”. PhRMA has now contributed about $150 million for ads promoting Obamacare. The evil insurers were promised government subsides (your tax dollars) for their support. And AARP is set to rake in mucho dinero with the cuts in Medicare Advantage. These cuts will drive people to the plans they promote. It’s amazing how the liberals who criticize conservatives for pandering to health care lobbyists secretly cut deals with them behind closed doors.

And to top things off, once again the Obama administration had to be told that they are breaking the law. The Department of Health and Human Services website is urging citizens to send Obama an email praising his health care plan. They even have a form letter. Sen. Grassley pointed out that this breaks laws preventing government funded propaganda. Back to the drawing board.

So there you go, the disaster is still pending.

Maybe when Obama said he would put emphasis on family values, we should have asked him exactly what he means by this term. The people in his administration not only have issues with taxes, they also seem to be clueless when it comes to values. Or maybe it is Obama who is clueless. Rahm Emanuel, David Ogden, Van Jones and others do not exactly exhibit the values I would teach my kids. But Obama and his Secretaries continue to appoint these people so I will continue to point them out because I refuse to let Obama get away with this hypocrisy.

So now we have the director of the Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools (Safe School Czar) Kevin Jennings. Jennings is a GLBT activist who founded the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). GLSEN holds workshops around the country that help people try to change curricula at schools starting with kindergarten to make it inclusive for homosexuals. These workshops include “Inclusive Kindergarten,” “Inclusive Elementary School Curriculum,” and “Re-envisioning High School Literature.” In 2000, the organization found itself in the middle of a scandal when they held an event co-sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Education in which young teens were told how to perform dangerous homosexual activities. They use the “safety” for homosexual kids as a veil for their actual agenda. This was revealed by Jennings himself in a 1995 speech and later at a conference. He also discussed this in one of his six books when he said he advocates a “diversity policy that mandates including LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender] themes in the curriculum.”

Jennings counts Harry Hay as a man who inspired him. Harry Hay was associated with NAMBLA, the North American Man/Boy Love Association. NAMBLA’s stated goal is “to end the extreme oppression of men and boys in mutually consensual relationships,” meaning they believe that pedophilia should be accepted and legal. Hay made numerous remarks supporting this as well as even saying that molestation of boys by homosexual men was a good thing.

Jennings also did not have good things to say about Christians, especially Baptists. In 2000 at a New York Church he reportedly said the following, “We have to quit being afraid of the religious right. . . . I’m trying not to say, ‘[F---] ‘em!’ which is what I want to say, because I don’t care what they think! Drop dead!”

And in his 2007 autobiography he wrote the following, “The Baptist Church had left me only a legacy of self-hatred, shame, and disappointment, and I wanted no more of it or its Father. The long erosion of my faith was now complete, and I, for many years, reacted violently to anyone who professed any kind of religion.”

I guess tolerance for others only goes one way.

Another questionable action by Jennings was his failure to turn in an ongoing statutory rape incident when he was teaching at the Concord Academy. He now admits that he did not turn the incident in and probably should have. Actually he was required by law to do so. His advice to the young man at the time was to be sure and use a condom.

Since the position also involves promoting drug free schools, I think it is also appropriate to bring up Jennings past drug use. Like Obama, Jennings was a regular drug user in high school. In his 2007 autobiography he wrote the following, “I got stoned more often and went out to the beach at Bellows, overlooking Honolulu Harbor and the lights of the city, to drink with my buddies on Friday and Saturday nights, spending hours watching the planes take off and land at the airport, which is actually quite fascinating when you are drunk and stoned.”

The liberal response to all of these incidents and associations was typical. The White House refused to comment and GLSEN spokesman Daryl Presgraves said that “all the attacks on Jennings were hate-motivated smears.” FoxNews reported though that Mr. Presgraves refused to address the individual issues brought up. I can’t imagine why. It reminds be of Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar. Carrey says “I object” - the Judge says “what is the basis of your objection”. Carrey says “because your destroying my case.” I imagine discussing any of the specifics of Jennings would be pretty damaging.

Back in the day when Obama was still hanging out with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers he made the decision that he would be against the war. He made this point clear when he announced his campaign from the Ayers’ home. But it was also clear that it was a political decision. Not just because of the logic of it, but also because Obama asked one of his advisers if the position would damage him politically. You cannot get much clearer than that. Now that he is in charge Obama is still making military decisions based on politics. There were red-flags everywhere during the election cycle that Obama would not make a good Commander in Chief, but most were ignored. Maybe now while we are still waiting on an Afghanistan decision is a good time to review some of these red flags.

Speaking of Afghanistan, one of Obama’s first responsibilities was his position on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He was a subcommittee chairman on this particular committee. Of course he was not given this position because of any kind of expertise, but rather the opposite. They were grooming him to run for President and like all those AP classes I took my senior year, it looks good on the resume. During his time on this committee, they held 3 hearings on Afghanistan. A war Obama said we should have been concentrating on instead of Iraq. Hearing in 2006. Obama did not bother to show up. Hearing in 2007. Obama was there and asked one question, but the question was not even about Afghanistan. Hearing in 2008. Once again Obama did not bother to show up. The best part is my source. None other than Joe Biden. Biden was right in criticizing Obama for this lack of responsibility. The rest of America should have picked up on it as well. Maybe then our Generals on the ground would not be waiting 5 plus weeks for decisions that were supposedly made back in March.

Picking Joe Biden as Vice President should have been another red flag. One, Obama had to pick him because he was so obviously weak when it came to military issues and foreign affairs. Second, Biden is a pathological liar. And third, Biden is not quite the expert he claims to be. Before the election cycle began, Joe Biden said that leaving Iraq in disarray would lead to a more widespread Middle East conflict. He even wrote about it in a book. Then as things got tough he and his new running mate Obama advocated the very thing he himself warned us about. Making decisions based on political popularity is a dangerous proposition, but once again we find ourselves in this position. Obama has not made a decision on Afghanistan because what he has to do is politically unpopular and he does not want to hurt his chances of socializing health care. He is putting American soldiers at risk for politics.

“There were generals at the beginning of the conflict that said this is going to require many more troops, will cost us much more … those generals were pushed aside.”

This statement was made in March of 2008. Boy, does he have a short memory. Less than a year before this statement Obama himself was ignoring these same Generals. General Petreaus had the troop surge strategy and Obama would not listen to him. He refused to believe that such a strategy could possibly work despite the fact that Obama had not been to Iraq to discuss the strategy with the commanders on the ground. Even when Obama had the opportunity to speak with Gen Petreaus here in the states, he chose to try to sharp shoot him publicly instead of discuss why he thought the strategy would or would not work. Obama even went as far as to say that even the officers he talked to did not think it would work. That very well might be the case when talking to the likes of retired Gen Clark , who was fired for judgment and integrity issues, but not with current commanders who are putting soldiers at risk. These men would not knowingly put our sons and daughters in danger with a plan they did not believe would work. The worst part of the whole ordeal was that once it was obvious the surge worked Obama would not admit it. Finally after much pressure Obama purged his campaign website of all his critical statements of the surge and lied on TV about his position. Our Commander in Chief. Not good.

There are other instances of Obama’s policy of politics over substance. A very obvious example was the canceling of a visit to wounded troops in Germany. They did their best to spin it, but I was not born yesterday. (Although I did get carded this weekend at HEB when I bought a bottle of wine) But I like to look at less obvious examples as well. In this pre-election post I looked at answers given during a VFW interview with both McCain and Obama. The answers Obama gave should have been given much more scrutiny than they were. His answers illustrated that he knows too little about the military to be a Commander in Chief. They also illustrated a man that will give the popular answers to get votes despite the adverse affects on our mission.

But all these red flags were not picked up on by the media and now Obama is the Commander in Chief. And now this inexperience is really showing. In March Obama gave his new strategy on Afghanistan. A few weeks ago General McChrystal gave Obama the specifics to implement this plan. Obama knew what was coming. There is nothing more to analyze. He just expected his government takeover of healthcare to be done by now. The longer the healthcare debate carries on, the more excuses we will hear out of the White House. But it does not change the obvious.
