We now transition to the meat and potatoes of Scoutmastership.. What a Scoutmaster must KNOW.
The first thing that a Scoutmaster must know is that the Boys run this program.. not him. Boy Scouting is for the Scouts, by the Scouts. It is through the Scout led troop that they learn, grow and develop in citizenship, character, and fitness. It is not always pretty, and that is where you are tested as a Scoutmaster. In those not so pretty times you need to let the course run... see how the Scout react and make decisions. Now when it comes to safety.. by all means step in, but don't be so quick to throw in the towel.
The Scoutmaster needs to understand the Patrol Method. More to the point, he needs to let the Patrol method work. According to founder Sir Robert Baden Powell, the Scout method works naturally and unconsciously: naturally in the way that it follows the natural impulses of a Scout, unconsciously in the way that the Scout is not aware of the education. He said, and I agree that "The patrol system is not one method in which Scouting for boys can be carried on. It is the only method."
More on the Patrol method in a future post.
The Scoutmaster must know the skills to deliver the promise. Ok.. hold on.. what the heck is "the Promise". Well I am certain that if you polled a group of Scouters exiting Round table you would get a multitude of answers, but according the Boy Scout Handbook in the 90's the promise looks like this:
SCOUTING promises you the great outdoors. As a Scout, you can learn how to camp and hike without leaving a trace and how to take care of the land. You'll study wildlife up close and learn about nature all around you. There are plenty of skills for you to master, and you can teach others what you have learned. Everyong helping everyone else - that's part of Scouting, too.
SCOUTING promises you friendship. Members of the troop you join might be boys you already know, and you will meet many other Scouts along the way. Some could become lifelong friends.
SCOUTING promises you opprotunities to work toward the Eagle Scout rank. You will set positive goals for yourself and then follow clear routes to achieve them.
SCOUTING promises you tools to help you make the most of your family, your community, and your nation. The good deeds you perform every day will improve the lives of those around you. You will be prepared to help others in time of need.
SCOUTING promises you experiences and duites that will help you mature into a strong, wise adult. The Scout Oath and the Scout Law can guide you as a Scout and throughout your life.
The 1965 Scoutmaster Handbook would tell you that Scouting is fun, Scouting is Adventure, and Scouting is comradeship!
So put all that together and you get the reason why boys join Scouts!! That is the promise that we need to deliver.
So what are those skills that are needed to deliver the Promise? You start with knowing what the promise is and how your troop is delivering it.
Skills in providing adventurous activities, camping, hiking, scuba diving, climbing and a list to long to mention in one post. Never short change the opportunities that are sought after by your PLC.
And that brings us to the final thing a Scoutmaster must know, and that is the resources available. The best thing you can do for a PLC is to offer guidance on the opportunities available to them. In Scouting the sky is the limit.. never limit them.
In a Scout led troop, they get to pick and choose their adventure, they get to pick and choose their friends (patrols), and they get to pick and choose how they are going to achieve the goals they set.
Through Guided Discovery you will help them find success.. and that is what you, the Scoutmaster must know. It is not about you.. it is about them. They keep coming back to find the promise of Scouting. Give it to them.

Have a Great Scouting Day!

Baden Powell, in his book, Aids to Scoutmastership warned us not to overcomplicate Scouting, he said that Scouting should be Simple, Boy led, and Fun. And that basically sums it up.
But what of the modern day Scoutmaster? I would love to say that things have not changed, but they have.
The basics have not though, the times, the uniforms, and the gear has changed, but Scoutmastership is the same. It is still simple, it is supposed to be boy led, and it is fun.
So what it is that a Scoutmaster must BE, KNOW, and DO.
Over the next few posts we will discuss that answer.
Today we discuss what a Scoutmaster must BE.
The Scoutmaster, as in days gone by must be certain things, first of all he needs to be a Role Model.
I always share that I am a Scoutmaster all day, every day. At the supermarket, at sporting events, and in Troop meetings, we Scoutmasters need to understand that we are role models. We are to model good behavior, skills, and model the Scout Oath and Law in our daily lives. Is this tough? Heck yeah it's tough. But just when you think no one is watching.. they are.
The Scoutmaster must be a Friend to the boys. This friendship breeds confidence, credibility, and trust. You need to be able to communicate to the Scouts in a way that they can understand and meet them where they are in their development, being their friend is important. They need not look to you as an authority, you are their Scoutmaster not their boss. You are not their disciplinarian you are there to teach them the discipline of living the Scout Oath and Law.
Be careful, you are not their buddy.. but you are their friend, there is a difference.
And finally, the Scoutmaster must be a good example. In particular in wearing the Scout uniform properly. We are the standard bearer of the Scouting movement and the Scouts will do what we do and they will want to meet our expectations. Wearing the uniform completely shows that it is an important part of Scouting and that we care about it as a method. The uniform is a great part of Scouting, it is a fantastic equalizer and shows that we are part of a team. Wear the uniform properly and set a good example for your Scouts to follow.
I am sure that you can come up with some other things that the Scoutmaster must BE, but keep in mind, we are trying to keep it simple.
Next time we will discuss what the Scoutmaster must Know.

Have a Great Scouting Day!

I ranted and raved over people that use the time excuse some time ago. At issue was people that say that they don't have time for this or that.. well yeah.. yeah you do, it's a matter of priorities. There are 24 hours in every day, how you fill that time is up to you. And so the argument goes.
I have been a bit lacks in my posting here at the Scoutmaster Minute, and like I said, not for lack of creativity or ideas.. it just has been an issue of priority. I really enjoy writing for the blog and a value the feedback and understanding of some really great readers.
So let me tell you what's up.
I have been doing a lot more for the podcast, as many of you know, the podcast has really taken a life of its own and all in a real good way. I just completed my 51st show. A show that turned out to be a three part show. Mike Walton was my guest and we had a fantastic discussion. What started out as an interview quickly became a discussion and ultimately just a couple Scouters talking. Well, recording, editing, and getting it ready to post took some time.
My Troop has been real busy and winter camping has taken a huge hunk of time. This year our troop added two additional winter camping experiences to the plan. We are now two winter camp outs for the year in the books and we are having a ball.
My Jamboree troop is really ramping up activity on the route to Jambo too... this will be an opportunity of a life time and I look forward to it... but I did not think that it would require this much work. Phone calls, web updates, emails, camp outs, meetings, and building stuff. Oh don't get me wrong.. I'm not complaining, I would not change it at all. But it is taking time, time that I am willing to give, but the problem is that I have had to slow down in other areas and unfortunately the blog has paid the price.
So what?
Well.. we are at a leveling time, Jambo activity has leveled off and a great committee is in place, the Scouts are working toward getting the activity planned and executed. The podcast is doing well and I have a good routine going with that. So back to blogging!! Yeah!
I just thought I would share some of this with you all, I have received a lot of email lately asking about the blog, well rest assured it is alive and well also and will be coming at you a lot more frequently.

With that...
Have a Great Scouting Day!

Scouting is and will be healthy for some time.
The Cubmaster asked if I could talk about the impact that Scouting has had on me.
Well, as I prepared I thought to myself that I could talk about the growth and maturity, I could talk about the sense of adventure, I could talk about the place I have been and the people I have met... but then it dawned on me.. I don't know what the full impact Scouting has had on me... Yet... I'm not done.
So I talked about my Scouting life and let the audience draw a conclusion or two.
I talked about 1976 and marching in the Spirit of '76 parade in Washington D.C. with my Bear Den.
I spoke of my very first camp out with a Boy Scout Troop at Manassas Bull Run. Being a Scout in Holland and our trip with a group of Scouts from Holland, Germany, Britain, and Canada to the Baden Powell House in London. Canoeing down a Bayou river in Louisiana or backpacking in places to numerous to mention in a blog.
Scouting took me places and introduced me to people that I may have never met or seen.
When I joined the Army, I was the only one in my Basic Training platoon that knew how to read a map and use a compass, I could stand in front of a group of strangers and talk without getting sick, I could cook and do basic first aid and I was confident enough to try anything once.
Had it not been for Scouting I may not have ever Scuba dived or Sky Dived, I may not have ever backpacked through the Denali National Park, I may not have ever become a Scoutmaster.
So the full impact? I don't know yet.
You know I have been to more summer camps as an adult than I had as a youth? And I am having just as much fun. Now I get to teach, coach and mentor young men and hope that they understand one day the impact of Scouting.
The answer is out there... I just can't see the full impact yet.
Have a Great Scouting day!

This morning my Troop and I stood in a snow filled gully. The crisp mountain air and the smell of pine filled the air as our Chaplains Aide raised his hand in the Scout Sign, the signal for all to prepare for the Scouts own service.
I stood patiently to the side as he read a passage about failure. To sum it up.. you are only a failure if you fail to learn, to get back up, to try harder next time.. you are only a fail if you make a choice to be a failure. I thought this lesson was both timely and significant to our Troop this weekend.
You see, this weekend was not a failure, in fact it was full of success stories. There were challenges that presented themselves and were over come. There were Scouts that from one winter camp out to the next demonstrated significant gains in knowledge, skills, and the attitude toward camping in the snow. There was one Scout in particular that seemed to put it all together and had what I considered his very best camp out... ever.
Success breads Success.. once Scouts start to see that they can be successful, they strive for more and more. It is my job as a Scoutmaster to set the conditions for that success.
That is not to say that I do the work or make it easy for them, rather it is to say that I provide an environment that the Scouts are constantly learning. BORING.. right.. WRONG.. Our class room is a snow drift of Mt. Hood, a walk on the beach, a trek on the PCT.. our class room is adventurous and challenging and it forces young men to discover themselves and each other, it calls for them to be able to make decisions, not for themselves but for the good of their patrols, it asks of each young man to push their limits and have fun where they thought they couldn't.
Baden Powell summed up this idea of Scouting in three words; Fun, Boy Led, and Simple.
I think we over burden the Scouts when we stray from those three principles that have brought Scouting to where it is today.
90 page Troop policy books on how and when to turn in a Spoon checked out by the Quartermaster, over hyped rules that counter the simple nature of a Scoutmaster Conference, Troop committees that are burdened with rules and policies that do nothing to support Citizenship, Character, and fitness.
It is as simple as a few notes on a 3X5 card pulled out of the pack of a Life Scout on a crisp Sunday morning.
So Success or failure? You fail when you stop learning. You fail when you stray from the basics of program, you fail when you stop trying to deliver the promise to all these great young men. You fail when you do not take the time to listen to a young man deliver a Scouts Own service in the woods surrounded by his buddies. He gets it... so should we.

I am so fortunate and Proud to be the Scoutmaster of my Troop. They surprise me, make me think, engage me, and make me see things for what they really are.

Have a Great Scouting Day!

We need to remember this as we go through our process's of Scoutmastership. The most important question I ask in a Scoutmaster conference is are you having fun?
When we play we play for enjoyment, for a challenge, we play to have fun. Now everyone's view of fun will be different, but the bottom line is when we are having fun, we are enjoying were we are.
When we ask a Scout if he is having fun, the next question is why? Out of the mouths of young men you will get a fair and honest answer. Then you need to process that answer, if the answer is no.. I am not having fun and he tells you an honest "Why", and you are hearing it over and over from a good sample of the Scouts in the unit, it may be time for change.
The PLC is your guide to fun. Provide tools, resources, and the know how, and let them put together a fun plan that will meet both the Aims of Scouting and keep the Scouts engaged.
When we challenge Scouts, allow them to push some of their physical limits, give them the opportunity to lead and make decisions, and have fun with their friends, we have healthy units.
When we play the game, our Scouts are happy and are having fun.

Short and sweet.. I thought at first that the BSA could have some up with something "Cooler" for the centennial year if they were going to change the ranks at all...
But now that I have seen the actual badges.. I like them. I especially like the Eagle Badge.
Looking at the bigger picture, a Scout that does earn this award this year is going to have something special and extremely memorable that will last a life time. Regardless of what the badge looks like, the accomplishment is there and he can wear it with pride forever.
I have two sons that are nearing completion of the requirements for the Eagle Award, I am proud of them and will be honored to see them earn this life changing award.
The Leader must always be honest in everything he does. The problems with dishonesty are numerous, but when it comes to youth, they will eventually get caught up in dishonesty and will be called on it. While it won’t seem to matter, that chipping away at honesty will break down credibility, and set the Scout up with a bad habit he will have trouble breaking in the long run.

The Leader must be a good example. In my Troop we ask that all leaders wear the Scout uniform properly. And without going into the uniform discussion, let me just say that you are either in the full uniform or you are not in uniform. While the uniform is not required in the BSA, it is a method and should be worn properly.. ok.. off the soap box.

We ask that everyone that is in a leadership position wear the uniform properly. From the troop Liberian to the Scoutmaster we wear the uniform to demonstrate a good example.

This example extends to behavior, skills, and attitudes. The leader must demonstrate a good example living the Scout Oath and Law for others to follow.

A leader must be willing to learn. Learning is a skill the leader must embrace. It is tough to ask the boys to learn.. after all they sit in class all day, but reinforcing the idea that what they are learning in Scouts is fun and leads to adventure, that the Scouts are allowed to set the environment for the learning instead of having a bunch of adults tell them what they are going to do… this seems to work when the boy led troop is running well.

The leader is a team builder. Leading his team to an understanding that working together they can accomplish anything, soon the team will develop spirit and camaraderie. They become a high performance team.

The Leader is a communicator. He needs to be able to communicate effectively enough to accomplish any task. Whether that is on the phone, in person, via email, the leader needs to understand the basics of communication and work to send his message well enough to provide Purpose, Direction, and the motivation needed to lead his team.

And to take a page from the NYLT. The Leader must BE-KNOW- and DO.

He must be an example, know the skills necessary to teach, coach, and in some cases mentor, and Do the right thing always.

Have a Great Scouting Day!

Not just words

This weekend before we hiked out of camp, our chaplains aid delivered a real nice Scouts Own service. His message to the Troop was to develop good habits. He challenged the Troop to stay away from bad habits, especially when camping. Our chaplains aid really nailed it and in not so many words called out some of the guys for the habits they were forming.
His message got me to thinking about habits and how they are formed in our Scouts.. what it boiled down to for me in the context of camping, citizenship, fitness, and service... was being prepared.
But the onus is not all on the Scout. What about the teacher.. the Scout leader.
This got me to thinking about the habits we are forming (teaching) in our Scouts and how we as Scout leaders bare a big part of the burden when it comes to the success of our Scouts.
Friday night we stayed at the Boy Scout winter lodge. It is a great time, the Scouts have their own private tubbing hill that is lit at night, a neat common area, and a bunk house. The lodge holds 6 Troops comfortably, but smaller Troops often double up with troops that have bunk space.
Our troop uses the lodge as a jumping off point. We take advantage of the great facilities, allow the Scouts to have a good time inner-tubbing, then they can dry their clothing in the dryers and get ready to camp the rest of the weekend out in the snow in a near by wilderness area.
During our recent stay, a Troop that is chartered by a certain church group shared space with us. They were a small unit and we had enough spare bunks to share.
Now it is no secret to those of you that follow this blog that my Troop is a backpacking troop, we are pretty well self sufficient and do not require a whole lot of space, gear, trailers, and the like. So when it comes to staying in the lodge, our plans change very little, the patrols still cook in 2 or three Scout teams, they use their backpacking stoves, bring their own food and ways to collect and carry water, and can clean up after themselves.
The other Scoutmaster introduced himself and we chatted about sharing the Troop bay. I informed him that we would not be needing the refrigerator, the stove and oven, and that we would be leaving in the morning. He thanked me as his Assistant Scoutmaster rolled in a very large cooler and bags of groceries.
Throughout that evening, Scouts from this other Troop kept coming to me and other adult leaders of my Troop for "things".. "Hey Mister, where are the forks?... Hey Mister, where are the pans,? My Scoutmaster needs them to cook dinner for us."
As we sat around the table, the leaders of the other Troop joined in our conversation about some high adventure opportunities. They asked why would be taking these "boys" out into the snow to camp? I listed many reasons, the least of which was that we are a Boy Scout Troop and we are always looking for new and exciting adventures. He mentioned that his boys could never do such a thing.. they just are not ready for it. I asked him, "well, what are you doing to prepare them?" "It's just out of the question" he replied, they don't need that kind of thing."
Well, that pretty much summed up his philosophy on Scouting. "They don't need that kind of thing"?
That's like saying they don't need the Scout Oath and Law, they don't need an outdoor program, they don't need uniforms, they don't need advancement.
Now I am not saying that every Troop need be a backpacking Troop, but what are we teaching our young men when we don't even give them a shot.
When we cook and clean for them, when we adults run their PLC and stifle the planning process. When we take away the boy led elements of Scouting and finally when we take away "BE PREPARED".
Prepared for what you may be asking. Well like BP said, "FOR ANYTHING".
Scouting prepares these young men for life.
Last night, my Troop conducted their after camp out review or "Start, Stop, and Continue". After they went through this at the Patrol level, I spoke to them about some of the things that I saw over the weekend. Let me first say that I am proud of each and every one of the Scouts in the Troop, they did a great job this weekend and all of them came out of the weekend learning something.
The one thing that I did challenge them all to do was to push themselves more. They all have the abilities and know how, but sometimes they are afraid of stepping out of their comfort zones and accept new challenges or adventures. How does this help in "Being Prepared"? Well, I think that causes them to become critical thinkers. When you step out of that which is comfortable, you need to be ready for what is on the other side. Becoming a critical thinker and really looking at what you are about to do prepares them for the adventure which starts to translate in their everyday life.
Now what has this have to do with the Troop that shared space with us?
Opportunity.
It seems to me that they are taking away opportunities for the boys in the Troop.. and that rubs me a little.
Being Prepared is not just words, it becomes a habit, it becomes part of the routines of our Scouts, it translates into their lives and that prepares them to be good men.

Some people use one trekking pole or staff, personally, I think that two poles are better as they provide better balance in the long run.
We can look at the Scout Oath and Law like the trekking poles of our life.
The Oath and Law provide balance, stability, and ease the load of our lives. The Law is there to ease the load when we are descending in our decision making, it is there when we face the tough climbs of our life and it is there to steady us when we cross rocky terrain.
The same is true with the Scout Oath... my other pole. It provides balance and steadies me in my life. As I climb it is there to remind me to be physically Strong. When I am descending it reminds me to be Morally straight. And when I am traversing some rough terrain it is there to remind me to be Mentally Awake.
As I hike through life with my trekking poles, the Oath and Law tell me to always do My Best.
The Scout Oath and Law are great tools to help me make it through the hike of life.
Periodically a unit should sit down with their plan and review it, check the compass if you will.
The Patrol leaders Council should determine whether or not goals are being met, benchmarks made, and if the unit seems to be heading in the direction they outlined in their annual planning session.
The Troop Committee should do the same. Taking a look at their goals and measure them up. Is the committee functioning as a team to provide support for the unit? Where are the holes, and how do we do better? Asking those questions will get the committee focused and back on track if they have strayed a bit.
The Scoutmaster and his Assistants also need to evaluate their performance. Are they teaching and coaching and allowing the unit to function as a boy led troop. What additional training do they need to provide to the youth leadership? Do we have enough adult leadership? Are we too hands on or are we heading down the right path? Again, questions that keep the leaders focused on providing the very best Scouting experience for the Scouts of the unit.
Recently, our unit has conducted such an evaluation. We established our plan back in October, but thought that with the new year and finishing up the last quarter of the year, it was a great time to use Start, Stop, and Continue and look at our unit with a critical eye.
The PLC began the process and found that they wanted to actually do more. They want to focus on retention of the "older" Scouts and focus on meaningful boy led meetings.
The Committee has decided that more parental involvement on the committee was needed and that they should spread the work out a lot more. The committee is also concerned about retention and marketing the unit better. All great points. Not that the Troop is not healthy, but looking down the road, we do not want to get caught like other units that start to feel that everything is great and then find themselves dwindling and not gaining Scouts annually.
The Scoutmasters have decided that the PLC and working with Patrol leaders is the answer to everything. Developing strong Patrol leaders and training leadership within the youth leadership ranks will place the unit in a position to grow and have more fun.
So the focus did not change to much, we still maintain our program, add additional training for leaders and upcoming leaders, and allow the Scouts to run their troop.
Coaching and mentoring along the way.
It is good to go through this process, you confirm those thoughts that maybe something needs to be tweaked, and we confirmed that we are in fact heading down the right trail.
I sat down with our Committee Chair the other night and we determined that the Adult leadership is on the same sheet of music and with some adjustments, the unit is making wonderful sounds.
Take some time and evaluate your unit. If things are running great.. keep on moving.. if they are not, well make the adjustments and get back on the right trail. Scouting has so much to offer, make the very best of it.

Over the last couple of days, since I posted my Cold weather Camping Card, there has been a lot of discussion and email flying around about techniques, procedures, and skills needed for, in particular, cold weather camping.
I would suggest that as Scout leaders we take this very seriously.
If your unit goes out and camps in "Extreme conditions", treks out away from the fire rings and parking lots, then I would recommend that your adult leaders and youth leadership get additional training. And no, the BSA does not offer the kind of training I am suggesting.
OK, so your Trip permit requires CPR trained individuals, it requires Hazardous Weather training, safety afloat and Safe Swim defense as well as Youth protection... and you are required to read and agree to the safe driving policy. That is all well and good... until you strap on your snow shoes and head into the wilderness.
Wilderness First Aid courses and Cold weather skills training are a must. The BSA does offer the OKPIK training in certain Councils, but I would venture to say that you will not get the level of training that you will get through NOLS, Alpine Adventures, or most mountaineering or backpacking clubs.
Outfitters like REI and Next Adventure are also great resources for getting to training for your outdoor experiences.
I guess my point is that before you take a group of Scouts out into the wilderness.. you better go beyond what the BSA "requires" and get trained.
I take a lot of pride in the fact that I am an experienced Backpacker and have taken the time to go to training, become proficient in skills and have the ability to teach those skills. But what I have learned, among other things is that you never can stop learning. Techniques change with better understanding and time and it is imperative that we keep up with the changes.
Do not be the Scout leader that wanders off into the woods with a group of boys without training. We see it every year on the news were Scouts get hurt and no one knew what they were doing. It's not just camping.. its skills, attitude, knowledge, fun, and adventure. But we need to do it smart.
Seek out a wilderness first aid course, visit a local outfitter and find a course on what ever the skill you need training in. It will make you a better out doors person and better leader.
Have a Great Scouting Day!
PS. The two young men in the picture are from my troop camping in January on Mt. Hood.

Revisited

I recently posted a "Cold Weather fact Card" that our Scout Troop uses for training and preparing for cold weather camping.

The beauty of the internet is that we can share ideas, thoughts, and information.. and most of all we learn (in most cases).
So immediately I have been called out for my "Sources".. well here they are.
The information that I put on that card come from an old OKPIK cold weather camping book put out by the Boy Scouts and my training as a cold weather instructor at the Cold Weather Combat training center at Ft. Greely, Alaska. Now I will grant that the information is dated.. and this is why I am glad that I have been "Called out". See now I have learned something, although the First Aid that I have put on the card will do just that.. provide first aid.
In regard to putting two people into a sleeping bag for Hypothermia. While it may not be current practice, it still works. The concern was getting two bodies into the sleeping bag. Well two 13 year old Scouts surely fit. I have also been reminded that putting an adult in the bag with a Scout would be against the guide to safe Scouting. I suppose that would have to be a risk an adult leader would have to take to provide the first aid necessary.
Having said that.. I would like to thank Walter Underwood for his comment and offering the current First Aid procedure. It reminds me that we never can stop learning. In fact this has motivated me to retake my Wilderness First Aid.
In case you are one that does not read the comments... here is what Walter writes:
"Current first aid practice does not recommend putting a second person in the sleeping bag.
Modern practice is a hypothermia wrap or hypothermia "burrito". Lay down a tarp, then two sleeping pads, then one sleeping bag. Put the person on that, in a sleeping bag, with hot water bottles. Put another sleeping bag on top and wrap the tarp.
If a bottle is too hot (someone boiled the water), pull a sock over it.
See: http://alpineinstitute.blogspot.com/2008/08/burrito-hypothermia-wrap.html
The "two people" approach has a lot of problems. Is there is a sleeping bag big enough? Do you risk getting two hypothermic people? [yes] Do you keep the heat donor in there when you evac? [twice as heavy]"

He offers a link to a discussion in the NOLS Leader that you will have to see in his original comment.
I think the most important part of Cold Weather First Aid is Prevention. We go prepared not to get hurt, knowing that things happen and whenever you are in a high risk environment we need to be prepared for the worst case. Constantly updating and revising plans, training, and skills.
Never stop learning. Update your cards and get out there and camp in the winter.
Have a Great Scouting Day!
In the PTC Media Forums the subject of Den Chiefs came up. There were some questions from a Cub Scout leader that was looking to have a Den Chief for her Den in the coming year.
Here is my response:

From a Scoutmasters perspective, Den Chiefs are a fantastic asset to your unit.
Having said that.. lets focus on the Scout (s).
The Den Chief position is a great way for a young man to develop leadership. It is a great way for him to develop self esteem and better yet, it is a better way for him to hone his Scout Craft. Teaching knots, building fires, showing how to pack a pack and what to take, how to cook and clean and live the Scout oath and Law.
Now some of you may think this is fantasy.. and it is IF…. YOU FAIL TO TRAIN THE DEN CHIEF.
I have two young men in my Troop this year that are in Den Chief positions. They both are doing a great job within the Dens that they are assigned. One of them has been with the same den for two years now… He started with them as First year Webelos and is assisting with their Second year Webelos year.
The other is assigned to a Bear Den.
Both of these young men… like previous Den Chiefs attend the official Den Chief training.. and then they attend Scoutmaster Jerry's Den Chief training. They are constantly being coached throughout the year as well as kept tabs on in conferences as well as feedback from the Den Leader.
The role of the Den Chief is an important one. They are the link between Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. They are role Models and your best recruiters.
Do you have to pick the cream of the crop? NO.. Leaders are not born.. they are made. So let any of your Scouts try this out. Some may need more coaching than others.
Another bit of free advice… Scoutmasters.. help the Den Leaders out. Go to their meetings and get to know them. Find out what their needs are and then teach your den Chief the specifics.
Den Chief is not a substitute Den Leader.. he is a boy that is there to help and he can be when given specific tasks and goals.
I highly encourage an active Den Chief program within Packs and Troops.
Oh yeah.. did I mention recruiter. I have found that a good Den Chief is your best recruiter. Not only for the Cub Scouts.. but more important.. their parents. When they see this young man doing his best, being a good role model and teacher.. they will flock to your unit.
The Den Chief position is not and should not be used as a "Filler for rank" job. This takes away from the program and destroys the relationship between Packs and Troops.
I may have to do a whole show in this too.
Have a Great Scouting Day!

It is a nice tool for teaching cold weather camping to the Scouts. We find it helpful to the Scouts so they can use it as a reference sheet.
We print them and laminate them.. they are light weight and fit nice in the pack.
Again, its a nice tool for teaching and reenforcing cold weather skills and first aid.

I think that as long as there are guys like me there will be debates on which is the best type of stove to take on backpacking trips. And as long as there are guys like me.. we will have each type of stove.. so we can meet our needs in the backcountry.
So the current debate is which stove is best in a Cold weather environment. And the answer is not so simple.
Here is what I know.
For absolute best performance in the cold.. Liquid fuel stoves like the MSR Whisperlite is a proven stove. Typically you will always get peak performance from a liquid fuel (white gas). This type of fuel and stove works extremely well in freezing and sub freezing temperatures. They are very reliable.
The disadvantage is that they are a bit messy at times, bulky, and require more maintenance.
Liquified Gas or Canister Stove are the next in class. They are very simple to use and require very little maintenance. Stoves like the Snow Peak Giga power and the Jet Boil are very simple and efficient. But not as efficient as a Whisperlite. Using a canister stove in the winter requires special care and considerations to work at it's peak (which you will not get absolute peak performance from a canister stove in extreme cold temps). There are ways to increase the performance however.. keeping your canister of fuel warm is one must. Keep your canister in a wool sock, make sure you are cooking on an insulated surface (cook on a closed cell pad) and always use a wind screen.
Alcohol stoves would be another choice. They work, but require priming and preheating. They have slower cook times, so if you are wanting something hot quickly.. that won't happen with an alcohol stove. They are real clean and require no maintenance. The alcohol stove does not perform well in sub freezing temperatures.. but they are light, cheap, and easy to use.
Solid fuel stove like the Esbit stove are yet another option. Much like the alcohol stove, you are not going to get fast cooking times, but the solid fuel is reliable and works in the extreme cold. A great advantage of the Esbit stove is they are light, compact, cheap, and easy to use. Really the only disadvantage is the cooking time and you have no ability to simmer if you need to.
So did I answer the debate? No.. What you need to do is find what works best for you. Get out and test these stoves for yourself and see what works best in your kit. I personally have a Whisper Lite, a Jet boil, a Giga Power, a couple alcohol stoves, and an Esbit stove. I find that the Giga Power is pretty much my favorite.. it does everything I want it to do. I like the Whisper lite in the winter and I like the alcohol and Esbit for toying around in the summer. The Jet boil is a super efficient stove and I really like it.. but pound for pound and inch for inch I prefer the Giga power canister stove, but that's just me.
So the answer is up to you. The debate will rage on forever and ever.. and at the end of the day, it is what you pull out of your pack that you like and are comfortable with that will win.
Have a Great Scouting Day!

I just wanted to take this opportunity to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas.
Christmas is such a special time of year for me and my family and I hope that this Christmas, even when times are tough, there is not enough bang in the buck, we are still at war, and jobs are hard to find, I hope that you all can understand and realize what Christmas is all about.
Faith, Hope, and Love.
An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.
This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."- Luke 2
This Christmas take the time to do something special with the ones that you love.
Merry Christmas one and all.
