The University of Cambridge Funded Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in the field of Biological Chemistry, Materials Chemistry, Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Synthetic Chemistry in Chemistry, UK

Study Subject: Biological Chemistry, Materials Chemistry, Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Synthetic Chemistry
Employer: The University of Cambridge
Level: Postdoctoral
Scholarship Description: The Department of Chemistry is looking to support individuals of outstanding merit and potential who might wish to apply for one of the following research fellowships to be held in the Department from October 2012:
Royal Society University Research Fellowship
EPSRC Career Acceleration Fellowship
BBSRC David Philips Fellowship
NERC Advanced Research Fellowship
Wellcome Trust Career Development Fellowship
The EoI should include a cover letter, indicating which of the Department’s five research themes best encompasses their research field a CV, publications list, and a one page research statement summarising research plans and resource requirements. Applicants must also arrange for a letter of support from a member of the Department’s academic staff to be sent independently by the same date. Late applications will not be considered. We intend to draw up a short-list of around ten applicants covering all fellowship schemes by the end of June 2011. Those short-listed will be invited to visit the Department on July 20th to give a research seminar and meet members of academic staff. Applicants will be advised shortly after whether their application will be supported by the Department, and to which fellowship scheme they can apply. Much of this procedure will necessarily take place before calls for proposals have been announced by sponsors, but the timescale is determined by the likelihood of the earliest submission dates being in August and the need to give applicants enough time to prepare their applications and receive feedback.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 31 May 2011

Research Assistants in Air Traffic Management (two posts)

Ref. 16269
Department of Aerospace Engineering

Two Postdoctoral Research Assistant Posts:
Optimization for Air Traffic Management

You will be the primary researcher on one of two projects developing optimization methods for use in Air Traffic Management (ATM). The first project is “Supervision of Route Optimizers” (SUPEROPT) and will focus on tailoring trajectory optimization to suit human supervision, developing formulations and interfaces that are intuitive to use and interpret. The other project is “Probabilistic Network Based Operations ATM R&D” (ONBOARD) and will investigate how to include uncertainty in large scale models of air traffic flow, leading to robust optimization and control of that flow.

Both of these projects are part of the Long Term and Innovative Research (WP E) package within the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) programme. SUPEROPT is led and carried out by the University of Bristol alone. ONBOARD is led by GMV and in collaboration with SkySoft-ATM. Both projects will involve collaboration with EUROCONTROL and SESAR.

You will be based in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Bristol, supervised by Dr. Arthur Richards. Bristol is at the heart of the UK’s aerospace industry and the Department performs world-leading research in various relevant topics, including control and dynamics, fluid dynamics and advanced composites. In particular, you will be working in a group researching advanced control and planning methods for aerospace, including autonomy and control for spacecraft, Unmanned Air Vehicles, and air traffic.

You will be educated to PhD level or equivalent, with a strong background in numerical modelling and optimization. Furthermore, you will have practical experience of applying optimization, including strong algorithm development and programming skills. Experience of trajectory optimization or air traffic applications would be an advantage for either project. Familiarity with human-machine interfacing would be beneficial for SUPEROPT, but not essential. In addition to the research itself, you will be expected to contribute to, and sometimes lead, writing research papers, grant proposals, conference presentations and demonstrations.

Both posts are fixed-term for 15 months starting June 2011 (SUPEROPT) or September 2011 (ONBOARD).

Grade: Level a in Pathway 2
Salary: £29,972

Study Subject: Buildability Problems Diagnosis System
Employer: The University of Central Lancashire
Level: PhD
Scholarship Description: Applications are invited for a full-time scholarship available in the School of Built & Natural Environment. The scholarship is tenable for up to 3 years for a PhD (via MPhil route) [subject to satisfactory progress] and is open to international applicants only. UK/EU applicants are not eligible to apply. The scholarship will provide £15000 towards the cost of the International tuition fee over 3 years.
This project is based on the growing interest for reductions rework in construction projects in order to increase efficiency, minimise delays and impact on the environment. The direct costs of rework in construction often accounts to between 5% -15% of the total costs and as 30% of the activities in construction projects and it is recognised that site teams spend disproportionate time and effort making designs work in practice. The occurrence of rework in construction is usually the result of correcting inadequately implemented activities or processes. Buildability is widely considered as one of the main causes of reworks in construction industry. Accurately assessing the buildability of a design can be a significant challenge. The current manual process is time-consuming, prone to error and does not precisely identify the cost implications of buildability issues. This can lead to substantial inefficiencies and errors, going undetected or unnoticed, causing issues in the delivery process and spiralling costs.
The aim of the proposed project is to develop an automated system for diagnosing buildability problems at design stage to solve them before it reaches the site team to avoid rework and delays. To achieve this aim a number of objectives have to be met. These objectives:
- Investigate key buildability problems and their nature (interface problems, assembly problems, compatibility problems etc)
-Developing framework for buildability problems diagnosis.
- Developing bespoke automated buildability diagnosis system.
- Evaluate, using appropriate examples, the effectiveness of the proposed framework and buildability diagnosis system.
The project has four main activities – critical analysis and better understand of buildability problems at the design and construction stages and their impact on rework, the development of a framework for identifying these problems, the development of a bespoke automated system for identifying buildability problems during the design stage, and development of a prototype and system evaluation.
Eligibility: Applicants should have, or expect to receive a qualification equivalent to a high class UK honours degree.
