The Legend of Zelda Second Quest Speedrun

For those of you who aren't familiar with what speedrunning is, it's when a gamer tries to complete a video game from start to finish in the shortest time possible. In order to do this, they must practice, practice, practice, and become intimate with not only the game itself, but any little trick or shortcut they can find to use to their advantage.

Ross Miller from www.originalnintendo.net has completed the second quest of the original Legend of Zelda in an impressive 38 minutes and 19 seconds. According to Speed Demos Archive, the current record for the second quest is 44 minutes, 43 seconds, so it seems that Ross has well and truly beaten this!

This video is impressive watching, and may also prove helpful for anyone struggling to complete this quest. For those of you who know a bit about speedrunning this game, Ross doesn't use the UP + A technique (which is used to quickly return to the start screen if this screen is closer to the next area/level than the current location).

Spirit Tracks Update: Euro box art, new info

The box art for the European version of Spirit Tracks has been unveiled.

Additionally, Kit Ellis from Nintendo of America has revealed that the game will take place about a century after Phantom Hourglass, and that the Link in this game is a new Link. Since the Phantom from Phantom Hourglass is making a comeback, albeit as a friend not a foe, it will be interesting to see if the story in this game will have any connection to Phantom Hourglass and The Wind Waker. Is the land in this game the new land that Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass Link and Tetra set sail to find for all those years ago?

You'll also be able to customise the train in Spirit Tracks, similar to the boat in Phantom Hourglass, and at some point in the game you'll gain the ability to lay down your own train tracks. I'm really excited to hear the latter, because one of my favourite things about Zelda is exploring the overworld, and I was worried that the overworld would simply rush by as Link takes the train from A to B. So it's nice to know that if I see some little area that I want to explore, I should be able to create a track to get there!

Finally, for the Zelda collectors out there, Prima Games will be releasing a collector's edition of their strategy guide for this game. Similar to the guides that they released for Twilight Princess and Phantom Hourglass, it will be a hardcover edition with foil detail, and a collectable world map on parchment paper. Europeans who pre-order the game will also get collectable figures of Link and the Phantom.

I've added nine new stories to the fan fiction library tonight. They are all short stories.

Requiem of Sanity: The Story of Ganondorf Dragmire is a story about Ganondorf's origins, and the role the witches Koume and Kotake played in his upbringing.

In A New Beginning, Link and Zelda are killed... only instead of dying, Link finds he's been sent back seven years into the past.

Elf Princess has written two new stories to follow on from Rainbow Haven. While Rupee Collector, After Twilight Princess, Link, Zelda and a Special Guest go to Fifth Grade and Sage's True Power are all script-style stories with more random elements.

Finally, the The Exiled Prince is a story about the Zora people, set long after Ocarina of Time when Ganondorf returns to Hyrule.

The long-awaited independent Zelda movie The Hero of Time premiered in June, has had a couple of public screenings since then, and it's only a matter of time before it becomes available online to everyone worldwide. Therefore, it is time that a review of the movie is done. For those who have not seen the movie yet, this review does not contain any spoilers, so you do not need to worry about anything being given away.

Zelda fans have long viewed the idea of a movie based on the series with a mixture of excitement and trepidation, wondering if it is possible to successfully adapt the beloved video game series onto the big screen. Nintendo won't give the go-ahead for an official movie, but a few years ago a group called BMB Finishes announced that they were making an independent Zelda movie called The Hero of Time. When the first trailer for this movie was released in early 2006, it sparked heated discussion among Zelda fans, some loving the fact that Zelda was being brought to the big screen, while others didn't like the look of the film one bit. And while The Hero of Time is not the only Zelda fan-film to have been made, it remains as the most high-profile of them all. Regardless of whether they loved or hated the idea of it, many fans closely followed the progress of this movie. After several years, the movie is now complete, and the wait has been worth it.
Zelda Cosplay at Dragon*Con 2009

A couple of weeks ago, I attended Dragon*Con for the first time. Dragon*Con is one of the largest pop-culture conventions in the world, and it's also the place where cosplayers come out to play. I've enjoyed going to conventions for the last few years because they appeal to my inner sci-fi, fantasy, gaming and costuming geek, but unlike other conventions I've been to, Dragon*Con is one where the number of people in costume far outweighs the number who are not.

I've always found costuming to be a lot of fun, and this update is a pre-cursor to something I've wanted to add to this site for many years: a Zelda cosplay section. "Cosplay" is a combination of the words "costume" and "role-play". Cosplayers usually create and wear their costumes for conventions, some specialised such as anime-only conventions, some more general combining many aspects of pop-culture.

While I was at Dragon*Con, I decided to try and find as many Zelda cosplayers as I could. So I now present to you the photos I took of various attendees in their Zelda costumes. The convention was huge, taking place in not one but four hotels, and there's no way I was able to find every single costume, so I apologise if you were at the event in a Zelda costume and your picture is not here. You can view pictures after the jump...

This year, they plan to do it again. I have a new affiliate, Link's Hideaway. The site was created in early 2008, and has been building up a large collection of content ever since. Currently, they've been adding lots of guides, and they also have a growing fan-works section. I think that this site is well on the way to becoming one of the big Zelda sites, so make sure you pay them a visit.

Our affiliate, LOZ.com have made an exciting discovery. They have unearthed a series of scrolls in the Gerudo Desert, and found that they are the fabled Ancient Hylian Texts. The first chapter, describing the creation of Hyrule, has been translated, and you can read it here.

I've also added a link to a Goron Fanlisting, for all you fans of the rock-eating creatures.

Three weeks ago, The Hero of Time movie had its world premiere in Atlanta. There were two screenings, with a great turn-out at both. The response from the
audience was very positive, and a great time was had by those who attended. For those who couldn't make it, you can watch the video of the premiere.
I've also had many emails from people who couldn't attend the premiere asking if the movie will be released on DVD or online. The answer is that yes, it will be, but first more screenings are being planned. You'll have to stay tuned for announcements on further screenings, but these will likely be held in the US. But if you won't be able to make it to a screening, don't worry! As I said, it will be released to the world eventually. I'm in the same boat as you are, and I'm really looking forward to finally getting to see the film.

Zelda Wii Concept Art

Nintendo have released the image that they revealed in their roundtable discussion, in which they briefly discussed the Zelda game in development for Wii. This is most likely a piece of concept art from the game, although it's more detailed than simple sketches, which suggests that the game is well into development. When Miyamoto displayed the image, he mentioned that viewers should note that Link is not holding a sword. This has sparked speculation that the female character depicted is some sort of manifestation of the sword. It's highly possible that she will be Link's new companion.

One other thing I found interesting is that Link is holding his shield on his left arm, which has traditionally been his sword arm. As Link doesn't have a sword, he may prefer to hold the shield with his left arm, but if you look closely, his sword-belt is slung over his right shoulder. Twilight Princess, which was developed for Nintendo Gamecube, was mirrored when it was ported to the Wii to accomodate right-handed gamers swinging their Wii-mote 'sword' in their right hand. This meant that in the Wii version, Link used the sword in his right hand. The official artwork for the game still depicted Link as left-handed, but as this game has been entirely designed for Wii, it's possible that this will be the first officially right-handed Link.

Personally, I'm hoping that gamers will have the choice whether to play left- or right-handed, after all, 10-12% of the population is left-handed. I was also interested to read comments from right-handed gamers about Twilight Princess who would have liked the option as well, so that they could have played with traditional left-handed Link.

Anyway, it's an interesting piece of artwork, and while we're probably not going to hear much more about the game until next year, it gives us something to speculate about.

A couple of days ago I mentioned that Nintendo discussed a Zelda title for the Wii console that is currently in development, but won't be seen until at least 2010. At the roundtable where it was discussed, Shigeru Miyamoto showed concept art from this new game, but the artwork wasn't allowed to be photographed. Someone sneaky did take a picture, and I stumbled upon it at NintendoWorldReport.com. While it's very low resolution and tiny, it's still a glimpse into what may be...

In my post below, about Nintendo's keynote presentation, I said that no Zelda title for the Wii was announced. It wasn't announced during the keynote presentation, but later on Nintendo held a special, invite-only roundtable, and it was here that the game was discussed by Shigeru Miyamoto himself. So the good news is that yes, Zelda for Wii is on the way, however it won't be seen until 2010 at the earliest. Miyamoto said that he hopes to announce it next year, but it may take a little longer. As this wasn't an official unveiling of the game, not much was said, however Miyamoto did show a piece of artwork that unfortunately was not allowed to be photographed. Those who have seen it say that the artwork depicts adult Link, looking more grown up than ever before, as well as a female character. The only other things said is that the game may possibly be a Wii Motion Plus exclusive game, as well as, "There are people who think of Zelda more as an RPG with simpler controls, so trying to figure out how to make everybody happy is something that's going to concern me," from Miyamoto.
So while it hasn't been officially announced yet, Zelda for Wii is coming, so those who were disappointed that it wasn't mentioned during the keynote conference can rest easy. I'll be eagerly awaiting more news on this game, but in the meantime I'm also looking forward to Spirit Tracks!

Spirit Tracks at E3

Nintendo have given their keynote presentation at E3, and some exciting new games have been revealed, including New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii, a new Metroid title, Golden Sun DS, and Mario Galaxy 2. There's also Wii Fit Plus, and Wii Sports Resort on the way. The Wii Motion Plus accessory was demonstrated as well.
On the Zelda front, we have a new Spirit Tracks trailer and screenshots, and the game was playable at the show.
Nothing about a Zelda title for the Wii was announced, however that doesn't mean that it's not on the way. E3 isn't the only place where Nintendo announce new games, and new Zelda may have overshadowed a lot of the other titles that were showcased, including Spirit Tracks. And after the delays with Twilight Princess, Nintendo probably don't want to unveil new Zelda titles until they're close to release, which is exactly what they did with Spirit Tracks. The game is expected to be released towards the end of the year.

Zelda Fan Fiction Update

I've updated the fan fiction library with 3 new stories, and updates to 2 existing stories.
Atlas Greatcreek has re-written his story King of Evil, and submitted a new story, Princess of Destiny. These stories are insightful looks into the characters of Ganondorf and Zelda respectively, and well worth a read.

Blood of the Holders by Coasty30 has been updated with two extra chapters, chapters 27 and 28, and has grown into quite a novel! This is a story that many people have enjoyed following; a tale of a Hylian Lord's evil plot amidst a time of celebration in Hyrule.

Link finds himself in a bad predicament in Blue Eyed Beast, a new story set after Link's adventures in Twilight Princess. He is transformed into a wolf once again in the regular light in Ordon Village, with no sign of Midna to help him. The villagers, having seen Link in the same spot only moments before, believe that Link has been eaten by this wolf that has appeared. Before Link can even begin to work out why he has transformed in normal light in the first place, he must first avoid being killed by his fellow villagers.

There is also a new story called The Grand Tournament, however only the prologue has been sent in so far. Please note that while I'm currently not taking new fan fiction submissions until I have posted all of the outstanding ones, when I do begin taking them again, I won't be accepting unfinished work anymore. I always feel a little sad when someone writes a review on an unfinished story, saying, "Please write more" and I know that the story was last updated in something like 2002. (This doesn't include stories that are part of a series.)

In a week's time it will be the start of E3. E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, is one of the biggest events on the annual gaming calendar. All of the big names in gaming will be there, including Sony, Microsoft and of course Nintendo, who will be giving their presentation on June 2. It's likely that Spirit Tracks will feature, with new information and media on the game, and possibly a playable demo. It's also been rumoured that there is also a Zelda title for Wii in development, and if there is, I'd expect that it would also be revealed at E3 next week so I'm quite excited to see if there will be a new title. So stay tuned, as I'll be posting all of the latest Zelda news from E3 right here.

The Legend of Zelda: Darkmyst Blade is a new role-playing site that I have affiliated with. The main story is set approximately 500 years after Twilight Princess, and begins when a rift to the Twilight Realm opens. Ganon is up to his old tricks, and this time he has a number of powerful allies. Among these are evil counterparts to the three golden goddesses, and the Darkmyst Blade of the title is the evil counterpart to the Master Sword. Players can take on the role of various Zelda races, including Hylians, Gorons and Zoras. The main story will kick off in a few weeks, so if you enjoy online role playing, go check it out.
I've also linked to a Dutch Zelda site, Zelda Club.

I have got a real treat for Zelda fans, especially those who like to see things from Nintendo's glory days of the late 80's/early 90's. Back in the NES heyday, Nintendo released a series of "Choose your own Adventure" books known as Nintendo Adventure Books. Two books in this series featured The Legend of Zelda: The Crystal Trap, and The Shadow Prince. I've had The Shadow Prince on this site for years, and today I have added The Crystal Trap.
Ganon hasn't been able to steal the Triforces of Wisdom and Courage from Link and Zelda, so he decides that if he can't use them, then nobody should be able to. He casts a spell that seals both Triforces in crystal, and as the Triforce of Courage resides in Link's heart, Link is trapped too. Zelda has 24 hours to find the three things that are needed to break the crystal, so that she can rescue Link and together they can defeat Ganon.
Very special thanks to Trevor Mountney for this. He has a copy of this book, and very kindly scanned it in and sent it to me so that I am able to share it with you now.
