Most women around the world experience menstrual cramps from time to time. It seems to go with being a woman. However, women experiencing frequent and severe cramps during the first days of their monthly cycle may be suffering from a condition called primary dysmenorrhea.

You’ve probably heard of menstrual cramping but may not have heard of it called by its scientific name – dysmenorrhea. In the simplest terms, dysmenorrhea is a condition whereby a woman experiences severe and painful menstrual cramps and other pain associated with having a period. Dysmenorrhea falls into two categories: primary and secondary.

Primary dysmenorrhea often begins a couple of years after a young woman starts having a menstrual cycle and usually lasts her entire lifetime and has no obvious physical cause. The pain is severe and often happens frequently during a cycle. Doctors agree the severe pain is caused by abnormal contractions of the uterus and believe up to 90% of all women experience this condition at some point.

Why would the uterus have such abnormal contractions? Doctors believe they’re caused by a chemical imbalance. The chemicals in question – prostaglandin and arachidonic acid – actually control uterine contractions to expel the lining of the uterus during menstruation.

You may be faced with frequent severe cramping in the lower abdomen during your monthly cycle. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, fever, lightheadedness, or headaches. Expect pains to begin as soon as menstruation begins, become worse as flow is the heaviest (first two days of the cycle), and then ease off.

If you experience these symptoms, make an appointment with your gynecologist. They will be able to diagnose primary dysmenorrhea but will want to rule out other medical conditions. You can expect a pelvic exam, possibly an ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), laparoscopy, or a hysteroscopy to make a proper diagnosis.

Treatment will be based on your age, overall health, and medical history. They’ll also base it on the extent of your condition, how well you tolerate medication, and how they expect the condition to progress. They will also take your preferences into consideration since you’re the one who is experiencing the problem.

They may suggest taking a prostaglandin inhibitor to help reduce pain, an oral contraceptive so you don’t ovulate, progesterone (which is a hormonal treatment), or may make recommendations to change your diet.

Women who experience primary dysmenorrhea can be in so much pain that they have to miss school or work. They are also limited to the activities they can participate in.

Primary dysmenorrhea interrupts women’s lives more often than many women will admit. If you’re in that group and taking over-the-counter pain relievers doesn’t help, you may want to see your gynecologist. They will be able to determine the best course of treatment to ease the pain and help you experience the freedom of life without the painful symptoms of primary dysmenorrhea.

Transcendental meditation was introduced in 1955 in India. It is a form of mantra meditation where the person practicing it repeats words, syllables, sounds or groups of words. The goal is to “create transformation” in the person’s life.

Started by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, transcendental meditation is considered to be the most easily recognizable and widely practiced method of meditation. The technique can be completed in as little as 20 minutes, twice a day. During the 1960s and 1970s this method of meditation became very popular with as many as a million people learning to practice it.

Many people still practice transcendental meditation on a daily basis because they enjoy the benefits. They claim the mind and body learn to relax and rest. People practicing it also find stress and fatigue being released naturally rather than depending upon medicines to help them relax. They also say they have more energy, clarity of thought, and enjoy life more than before they began practicing it.

If you’re interested in learning transcendental meditation, you may be concerned about how long it will take you. There are organizations which still teach it claiming the process is easily learned. Classes are offered and generally take four days, lasting a couple of hours each day. After you learn the basics you don’t have to join the organization; you can continue to practice this method of meditation on your own or with others.

What does transcendental meditation look like? Basically you’ll sit in a comfortable position with your eyes closed. You may have seen people sitting in the yoga pose known as the lotus with legs crossed, hands pointing up, and fingers touching. While you may use this position to meditate, it is by no means required.

The important thing about this meditation method is for you to be comfortable and silent. It’s something you can do anywhere you have time and can close out the noises surrounding you. Some people have actually used their commute time on a train to meditate to help them be more prepared for the day ahead.

What are the benefits of transcendental meditation? Studies have been conducted for years concerning the claims of transcendental meditation. So far the studies have shown that there is a real, positive link between this technique and improved health. Some of the benefits include improved lung capacity among asthmatics, reduced high blood pressure, the ability to reduce or give up smoking and alcohol use, and less problems with insomnia.

Unlike some methods of meditation, this form does not require a particular belief system or any belief system at all. It is a natural way to relax and rejuvenate. If you do have a strong belief system, you can incorporate it with transcendental meditation without any problems.

Who doesn’t want to feel better, sleep more restfully, have more energy, and have improved health? After reading of these and other benefits, you can see why transcendental meditation is still popular.

Diabetic patients too fall under this category. Going further, pregnant women with Diabetes are probably amongst the most vulnerable to UTI.

Diabetic women are at a higher risk of developing to Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) after Menopause as compared to non-Diabetic women. In fact, a study by University of Washington, Seattle revealed that the risk of UTI in Diabetic women was 80% higher than others. UTI in Diabetic patients is not only more severe but also is more recurrent as compared to non-Diabetic patients.

The sugar content of urine in a Diabetic patient provides a breeding ground for bacteria once they enter the bladder. The most serious but rare types of UTI like pyelonephritis, widespread infections, abscesses, inflammation of the bladder wall, occur mostly in Diabetic individuals.

The risk of UTI increases with any negative change in the Immune System of the body. Diabetes, like many other disorders, affects the Immune System, increasing the risk of a Urinary Tract Infection.

Another characteristic of UTI in Diabetic patients is that of the risk of presence of asymptomatic (having no symptoms of illness or disease) bacteriuria – presence of bacteria in urine – is much greater than in others. Treating this condition, according to study conducted in 2003, is of little value as it does not prevent complications.

Diabetes may cause conditions of overactive bladder or neurogenic bladder. Whereas, an overactive bladder is common, neurogenic bladder is rare but more a severe condition.

Diabetic men and women commonly face problems like feeling of urinary urgency, Incontinence, frequency and getting up at night often to urinate. A severe condition often manifests in the shape of Painful Urination and retention of urine in the bladder. Bladder Infection treatment in cases of neurogenic bladder involve a Urinary Tract Infection cure with medication targeting better bladder emptying and a course of action called timed urination. Timed urination refers to behavior changes for promoting efficient urination. Occasionally, an insertion of a catheter is necessitated to empty the bladder, if other procedures, including massaging of the lower bladder, do not work with the patient.

For diagnostic purposes, the procedures involved include a check up of the Nervous system, x-rays, and evaluation of bladder function.

UTI in Diabetic patients can be a traumatic experience leading to complications if not treated in time. Urinary Tract Infection cure for Diabetic patients requires a longer period, lasting from anything between seven to fourteen days, of antibiotic treatment even for uncomplicated infections.
Although it is commonly believed to be a condition that primarily affects children, it is estimated that 12 to 15 million American adults also suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. But because child ADHD treatment and symptoms can differ slightly from adult ADHD and treatment, and because research into adult ADHD is still in its early stages, many adults do not know how to evaluate whether they are suffering from the disorder.

There is no single test that will identify ADHD, and there are no specific genetic or biological indicators that will lead to a diagnosis. Instead, it is necessary to consult a doctor who will conduct a comprehensive evaluation which will include extensive examination of past behavior, and should also include a physical exam to rule out any other possible source of the symptoms.

ADHD symptoms differ from person to person, but according to the American Psychiatric Association ’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, which is often used in ADHD research studies, they can include:

-Difficulty organizing tasks and activities
-Often losing things necessary for tasks or activities
-Often easily distracted by outside stimuli
-Not listening when spoken to directly
-Difficulty awaiting turn
-Difficulty playing or engaging in leisure activities quietly

All of the symptoms listed by the APA (and these are just a few) are meant to describe those found in children, but they can be used as a general guideline for adults as well. However, adult symptoms can manifest themselves in more subtle ways, and the hyperactivity seen in children is often less evident in adults. Instead, adults may be restless, on edge, and have trouble relaxing.

Diagnosing ADHD in adults is made more complex by the variety of conditions which can share similar symptoms. These conditions include drug or alcohol dependency, depression and thyroid dysfunction.

Although recognizing adult ADHD symptoms can be difficult, once diagnosed, adults have many options for treatment. Stimulant drugs such as Ritalin, which are often prescribed for children, have not been approved by the FDA for treatment of adults. They may still be effective, but can potentially produce unwanted side effects. Certain homeopathic remedies have also been found to be extremely effective in some patients. Homeopathic ingredients such as Avina Sativa (Green Oats) and Gingo Biloba are among those which can help alleviate symptoms.

Many studies agree that medication should be just one facet of treatment. Behavioral and psychological treatment, or what is called a âœmultimodalâ

Every year millions of people around the world are affected by cold or flu during the fall and winter months. Instead of becoming one of the millions, you can use the power of prevention to help you remain healthy this cold and flu season.

One of the easiest things anyone can do to avoid getting sick is to follow good hygiene. Cover your mouth whenever you have to cough or sneeze to avoid spreading germs. Wash your hands often or use a hand sanitizer. Avoid putting your hands near your face so you don’t unknowingly transfer germs by putting your hand near your mouth or rubbing your eyes.

Get plenty of rest so your body isn’t compromised by fatigue. When you’re fatigued or tired the chances are you’ll become sick easier, so being rested as well as unstressed is important.

Stay hydrated by drinking at least 64 ounces of water every day. If you’re trying to do the math, that’s eight 8 ounce glasses, which may seem like quite a bit. Why is staying hydrated important? It helps the immune system remain strong and will help anyone already feeling sick feel better. You may have to build up to drinking 64 ounces of water a day, but your body will thank you for it even at other times of the year.

Speaking of the immune system, eating good, nutrient and vitamin-filled foods will improve it. Dieticians generally recommend eating a minimum of five fruits and vegetables each day. However, maybe you have a picky eater in your home. Over-the-counter multi-vitamins are available to ensure you and your family gets the nutrients needed. You can also take herbs to make your immune system stronger.

Goldenseal, an herb which is a part of the buttercup plant family, has been used around the world for thousands of years. In the United States, Cherokee used the roots to make a tincture or tea to treat sore throats and reduce swelling in mucous membranes associated with colds. It was also used by the Aborigines in Australia long before it became a country. This herb, however, is becoming rare in the wild; you can find sources online which carry it.

Echinacea, or purple coneflower, improves the immune system by increasing the production of white blood cells. White blood cells attack the invading virus cells, so having more of them in the system will make the immune system more effective. Echinacea can be taken as a capsule or as a tincture twice a day for up to two weeks.

Astragalus has been used by the Chinese to strengthen the immune system for many years. They particularly use it when related to the respiratory system which is greatly affected by colds and flu. Use this herb to strengthen an already healthy immune system rather than trying to use it to fight off a cold. It can be taken as an herb or a tincture daily.

Siberian ginseng is another herb which is known to enhance the immune system, as is licorice. These herbs are great when taken on their own, but when used in conjunction with Echinacea and astragalus the resulting effects are increased.

No one wants to get sick with cold or flu. Using the power of prevention by trying these immune system boosting ideas may keep you and your family healthier this cold and flu season.

Many people hit the slopes when the temperatures drop and snow begins to fall. Some people develop ski sickness without knowing the condition exists. It’s important to be aware of ski sickness and to learn what you can do to prevent it.

It may not shock you to learn most people don’t know what ski sickness is. However, they may have heard of the term altitude sickness or mountain sickness; they are the same condition. Altitude or ski sickness is an illness associated with spending time in high altitudes without the body being allowed to adjust to the altitude changes gradually.

Acute ski sickness can be as simple as a mild headache and feeling fatigued. Since more people are spending time in higher altitudes for skiing and mountain climbing, this condition is coming more to the forefront of health concerns. Symptoms of acute altitude sickness include any of the following:

* Headache
* Fatigue
* Dizziness
* Insomnia
* Shortness of breath
* Nausea
* Decreased appetite
* Swelling of extremities

Many people with these symptoms don’t recognize them for what they are. They may claim the symptoms are from bad food, a hangover, or having an uncomfortable bed. If you’re in a higher altitude than you normally live, you may want to consider the symptoms as part of acute altitude or ski sickness.

Ski sickness can also lead to something as serious as a build-up of fluids in the lungs, which can be life-threatening. This is called high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE). The condition causes breathing to be labored and can develop quickly, often within the first or second night of being in a higher altitude. Other symptoms include having gurgling respirations, possible fever, or wet cough. If someone develops symptoms of acute ski sickness and fails to recognize them, they may become worse if not treated. This can quickly result in respiratory collapse and possibly death.

High altitude cerebral edema (HACE) is another form of severe ski sickness. In this case, fluids build up around the brain instead of the lungs. The person may notice a change in their mental state including being confused and the person may not be able to keep up with others. If unrecognized and left untreated, HACE can result in the loss of co-ordination, receding into a coma, or death.

It is possible to reduce your chances of developing any of the forms of altitude sickness by taking your time when ascending to elevations higher than 8,000 feet above sea level. In fact, ascending faster than 1,000 feet of elevation per day may be the outer limit one would attempt. Avoid physical exertion for 24 hours after reaching elevation, hypothermia, or consuming too much alcohol or other sedatives. Also recommended is to eat a diet high in carbohydrates while in higher elevations.

If you notice any of the above symptoms of ski sickness, take time to rest at your current elevation for at least 24 hours before continuing on. Seek medical help immediately if you have shortness of breath at rest, mental confusion, or loss of muscle co-ordination. The change to a lower altitude may do the trick, but you don’t want to take a chance of developing more severe symptoms.

Skiing on the slopes of the Rocky Mountains is a thrill sought after by many people each year. However, many people don’t recognize the dangers that may befall them. It’s important to be aware of ski sickness (or altitude sickness), its symptoms and what to do about them so you can enjoy your trip.

Weight gain and obesity is an increasing issue today. The standard Western diet includes too much fat, oils, and sugar. People no longer eat enough fruits, vegetables and raw nuts and seeds. And people are looking for answers that are quick, painless and easy. Surgery to address weight loss is an option that might be a consideration for some, depending upon whether or not they meet the criteria.

Weight loss surgery is not meant for those people who are just slightly overweight but only for those who are morbidly obese. Clients who have faced obesity for years, tried medications and diet plans may find that weight loss surgery is an alternative solution.

There are several different types of surgery. Your surgeon is your best resource as to the type of surgery that may work best for your body type, weight loss and lifestyle. Be sure to ask you doctor all of your questions and make him aware of all of your doubts. Once the weight loss surgery is completed there is follow up processes that must be followed to have a successful outcome. If your doctor knows your doubts and concerns he can make a better choice of the particular surgical intervention that is right for you.

Before you undergo any surgery you are required to sign an informed consent form that says you understand the surgery, the consequences and the possible side effects and risks of the surgical procedure. Although the success rate for most weight loss surgery is high there are risks and complications that you should discuss with your doctor.

Some possible weight loss surgery include: liposuction, bariatric surgery, vertical banded gastroplasty, laproscopic gastric banding, Roux-en Y gastric bypass, and biliopancreatic diversion which all have their own list of possible complications and post surgical care.

There are certain considerations for a client to be considered for any weight loss surgery. If you dont meet these criteria then it may increase your risks and problems compared to the possible improvements.

Clients should be morbidly obese. That means that a client should be at least 100 pounds over the ideal body weight. Weight loss surgery should not be considered for people who have less than 100 pounds to lose. There also might be medical problems that are associated with obesity such as diabetes, swelling or pain that will not disqualify a client but rather improve their qualifications for a weight loss surgery.

Clients should have been fighting the obesity for five or more years with a body mass index of 40 or greater. You should be able to demonstrate to your doctor that you have not been able to lose weight by other more conventional methods. Your doctor may ask that you make another attempt to lose weight using other methods for six months while keeping a calendar or diary to record your efforts.

Clients will want to check with their insurance company for coverage since most companies do not cover weight loss surgery. With this knowledge the client can negotiate a preset rate with the hospital and doctor before the weight loss surgery to keep the client cost down.

Prior to the weight loss surgery the doctor will be very clear about the risks and complications that can happen. They may also ask you to undergo a quick examination by a psychiatrist to be certain that you are mentally stable to withstand the stressors and make the changes necessary to your lifestyle and behavior following the surgery.

Weight loss surgery is an option for people who are morbidly obese, have been for more than five years and have had little to no success using other methods to lose weight. Although the success rate can be high the client must also be prepared to make the necessary lifestyle and nutrition habit changes to lose weight.

The weight loss happens the same way it does with any other program – you eat less than you burn. With the weight loss surgery you have the added advantage of decreased hunger pangs and feeling full faster. It does not, however, remove food cravings or your relationship with food. Those issues must also be addressed to make this program a success.

It also makes for an attractive edging plant for the perennial garden. These plants are very versatile and will look good no matter where they are put.

Although the geranium can put up with a little frost, it loves the warm weather. Here are some tips for growing geraniums:

Light Most geraniums do well in full sun. That means that they should receive at least six hours of direct sunlight each day.

If the climate you live in is very hot, then you may plant them in an area that is partly shaded. Many geraniums will do quite well in a partly shaded spot, but they will not bloom as prolifically.

Soil Geraniums thrive in rich soil that is very well drained. If you add compost to your soil, this will give your plants an extra boost.

Fertilizer When you grow geraniums, it is good to note that they are heavy feeders. You should plan on giving them fertilizer at least every two weeks. You may also feed them when you plant them with a time-released fertilizer that will last the entire season.

Water When it does not rain, you will have to make sure that you water your geraniums regularly. If you are not sure if you should water, just poke your finger down into the soil. If it is dry at least two inches down, then you had better get out the hose!

Grooming You want to keep your plants looking their best by dead heading them and by taking away any dried or discolored leaves. In this way, your geraniums will look great all season!

Even though the prescribed medications help in providing relief from the symptoms of ADD, child ADHD treatment is not complete until you consider and include various kinds of natural treatments in the overall scheme of cures. A holistic approach is likely to benefit your child to a much larger extent teaching adaptive techniques along with alleviating the symptoms of ADD. Although natural treatment for ADD, include therapy, lifestyle homeopathy and mind-body techniques, nutrition management is one of the most accepted and well-researched ADD treatment being used today. This helps in augmenting and complementing the prescribed medication without really interfering in the process.

This nutritional alternate therapy comes in handy especially with children who are at a higher risk to exhibit side effects due to prescribed medication. There are two aspects of this nutrition management diet restriction and supplementation. In an observation study conducted as early as 1975, it was shown that a large proportion of children showed signs of improvement in symptoms of ADD when artificial food coloring and flavors along with naturally occurring salicylates were eliminated from their diet. In a recent clinical, children were administered a placaebo and tartrazine and their behaviors were observed over time. It was noted that when children were given tartrazine, about 50% of them showed signs of irritation and restlessness.

Even though many believe that refined sugar causes signs of ADD, there is no study that supports this empirical observation. But most of the restrictive diets that have been formulated for children suffering from ADD eliminate the consumption of sugars, candies and chocolates. The one thing to note is that even though these are basic measures that any of us can take on our own, these diets should be followed in consultation with a nutritionist since reduction of various essential forms of food may cause malnutrition in children.

The supplementation aspect of nutritional remedy for ADD includes the ingestion of various minerals that are essential for proper brain development. Supplements or high doses of many minerals are recommended. These recommendations include high levels of vitamins (much higher than the Recommended Daily Allowance or RDA), magnesium, Vitamin B6, Iron, Zinc, Melatonin and essential fatty acids. Even though each of these nutrients is linked to proper brain development, there is no proof of the fact that adding on extra doses of these minerals will ensure proper treatment of the condition. But they do provide a possibility of reducing the symptoms of ADD and therefore, is worth trying, given that there are no side effects of the treatment.

Another type of treatment that can be explored in the fight against ADD is herbal remedy for ADD. Similar to nutrition management, there are no clinical studies that prove the efficacy of the herbs used in treatment of ADD. But the fact that there is empirical evidence is motivation enough for parents to try these for their children.

A tuberous-rooted begonia is a beautiful plant to grow. It has lovely double-flowers as well as textured foliage. They make excellent potted plants as well as bringing color to summer gardens.

In order to get the earliest flowers, you should start your tubers off by letting them sprout in a seed tray or in a box of damp potting soil in the months of February or March.

Space them approximately two inches apart, and do not bury them too deeply. The top side should just be covered by a surface layer of potting soil.

The begonias like to be put in a temperature of about 64 degrees Fahrenheit. However, they do not seem to mind higher temperatures.

After the tubers have sprouted and you can see small leaves, transfer the tubers to a five inch pot and cover them with compost. Since you will probably be using the begonias in an outdoor garden, begin getting your begonias acclimated to the temperature outdoors in stages.

This process should probably begin towards the end of May. After a week, if the threat of frost has passed, you may leave your begonia plants outside all night.

Begonias like a place that is moist and partially shaded. If they happen to be in the sun for most of the day, then you should water your begonias frequently in order to prevent bud drop.

As the plants continue to grow and buds begin to form, the begonias should be given a regular liquid feed every ten days or so. This will help to promote good growth as well as an abundance of flowers!

Even with the amazing medical strides in recent years, sometimes the simplest and most natural solutions are best. Take vinegar, for instance. The power of acid has been shown to be effective for healing for years!

People planning a trip to the beach probably want to include a bottle of vinegar in their first aid kit. Why would they want to do this? Vinegar poured directly over jellyfish stings is extremely effective at reducing the pain. You can also dot vinegar on a bee or mosquito sting to reduce the pain associated with them.

Add a cup of vinegar to warm water. Pour this over your hair after you shampoo and it will remove any soap or sebum oil remaining on your hair. It will also restore the acid mantel. If you have brunette hair, vinegar will also add natural highlights.

Don’t you hate having the hiccups? Some people count to ten while holding their breath to get rid of them. Others try a teaspoon of sugar or peanut butter. Try swallowing a tablespoon of vinegar. It’s said to stop the hiccups instantly.

Lightly rub vinegar on any area of the skin affected by sunburn to relieve the pain. If the pain reappears, reapply more vinegar.

Add a teaspoon of vinegar to a glass of warm water. Gargle and then swallow the water and vinegar mixture. This will soothe a sore throat.

Put one-fourth of a cup of apple cider vinegar in a small bowl. Add one-fourth cup of honey. Stir them together and take one tablespoon of this mixture six to eight times a day to help you get over a cold quicker.

Speaking of colds, you can relieve the cough associated with them by mixing one-half cup of apple cider vinegar, one-half cup of water, one teaspoon of cayenne pepper, and four teaspoons of honey. Stir these ingredients until they are thoroughly incorporated. When you start coughing, take one tablespoon of the mixture. You may want to take another at bedtime to help control coughing during the night.

Sinus infections can also be treated naturally with vinegar. Add one-fourth of a cup of vinegar to a vaporizer and use it. This will moisten the sinuses and reduce the effects of chest colds.

Many people suffer from arthritis. Before eating each meal, drink a glass of water mixed with two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar. This won’t reduce arthritis pain immediately but after two to three weeks you should notice a marked difference in the amount and severity of the pain.

Do you or someone in your family suffer from an upset stomach? Drink a cup of water containing two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar. This will help cure an upset stomach.

Yeast infections are a common ailment among many women. You can prevent a yeast infection naturally by making a douche with one quart of warm water and adding one tablespoon of vinegar. The vinegar will help readjust the pH level of the vagina to combat the infection.

If using the power of acid as a natural healer, try to find a non-distilled variety rather than distilled vinegars. Distilled vinegar can be helpful in many instances, but to get the most healing from vinegar, select raw, non-distilled vinegar. It may cost a little more and be more difficult to find, but isn’t your health worth it?

The problem with being a parent and having children is that so many childhood illnesses have similar symptoms. You may not know if your child simply has a cold, the flu, or something more serious. It’s important to learn the symptoms of meningitis and septicemia in children to ensure you can make the best decisions for the sake of your child.

Meningitis

Quick, which health condition do these symptoms sound like: fever, fatigue, vomiting, and headache? You may have said the flu. If looking only to these symptoms for diagnosis, you may not think you have anything to worry about. Unfortunately, you may be wrong. These same symptoms may be a sign of meningococcal disease, also known as bacterial meningitis.

Bacterial meningitis is a serious condition and mistaking the symptoms for something less serious could mean the difference between life and death. It is a condition whereby the membranes and fluids around the brain and spine become inflamed. If left untreated, a person may experience paralysis, brain damage, or even death. Early detection is important in order to treat a person and avoid these serious results.

Bacterial meningitis can develop quickly. Symptoms may include diarrhea, vomiting, headache, runny nose, and high fever, all of which could be mistaken for a simple viral infection. However, you can suspect bacterial meningitis if the following symptoms are also present:

* Skin rash
* Sensitivity to light
* Lethargy or fatigue
* Stiff neck
* Seizures

Very young children may experience jaundice, stiffness of the neck and body, poor feeding, high-pitched crying, a soft bulge at the top front of the skull, and a fever or low temperature. If you or a child has many of these symptoms at the same time, get to the doctor as quickly as you can.

Septicemia

Septicemia, or bacteremia, is another illness parents will want to learn to recognize the symptoms of. It is associated with the gram-negative bacteria such as staphylococci and streptococci. Symptoms include fever, chills, a rapid heartbeat, and rapid breathing.

Septicemia, left untreated, may lead to organ failure or septic shock which has a mortality rate of as much as 60% among people having autoimmune problems. Patients without an autoimmune problem have a mortality rate closer to 5%.

The body has a variety of bacteria within the intestinal tract which pose no threat. However, once they enter the bloodstream, they can wreak havoc by developing into an overwhelming infection. The most common causes of septicemia include having a surgical procedure, urinary catheters, knife or bullet wound, or getting infected fecal matter into a wound.

Diagnosis of septicemia will come through a visit to the doctor where they’ll take your medical history, a physical examination, and blood tests to determine the offending infectious agent.

Treatment is normally aggressive and may vary depending upon the underlying infection, how far the septicemia has progressed, the overall health of the person, and any other disease present. Normally treatment will include antibiotics, intravenous fluids, and blood pressure medications depending upon whether low blood pressure or shock develops.

No parent wants to see their child affected by serious health conditions such as bacterial meningitis or septicemia. Unfortunately, children of all ages are affected by both of these conditions each year. Learning to recognize the symptoms of meningitis and septicemia in children will enable you to get medical treatment as soon as possible so treatment can begin and your child can begin their road to recovery.

Planting tools

You can either use a trowel or shovel to dig the holes for the bulbs. Your job would be made a great deal easier if you used a bulb planter.

It may be a good idea to mulch the newly planted bed of bulbs. This is recommended by most experts. The mulch will help to prevent weeds, cool the soil, retain moisture and it will provide more organic material that is necessary for the growing plants.

Watering Newly Planted Bulbs

After you have planted the bulbs, they should be given a good drink of water. It may also be helpful to water the bulbs occasionally if the fall and winter seasons were very dry.

You should plan on giving the bulbs at least an inch of water each week when the growing season becomes active. This can either be from natural rainfall or from supplemental watering.

Fertilizing the Growing Bulbs

When you begin to see the bulbs pop their tiny little heads out of the soil, it is very important that you begin to fertilize them every few weeks. It is best to use a good water soluble fertilizer. This will help to promote additional flowering and better bulb growth.

All of the above will make sure that you have beautiful flowers from the bulbs you have planted. It may take a little work, but it will be worth it in the end!

It would be best to plant peonies at the back of flower borders as they are large plants. In the spring, the peonies have attractive ferny foliage and the beautiful blooms are usually produced in May.

Peonies best thrive in a place that receives at least half a day to a full day of sunshine. If the climate is very hot, then provide some afternoon shade for these plants.

The best time to plant the peony is the early fall but early spring plantings do well also. Make sure to prepare the site well. Dig an oversized hole and make sure that you fill some of it with compost.

The secret of having a successful peony is this: Make sure that the tuber is positioned so that the eyes which are located on the crown are covered with about two inches of soil.

Peonies are picky they do not like to be planted very deeply. If your peonies have stopped producing flowers after a few years, then you should see if perhaps they have sunken too low in their bed. Perhaps they have had too much soil sitting on top of them.

If your peonies seem to flop over by mid-summer, then it would be a good idea to stake them. When you go to cut your flowers, clip them when the buds are just beginning to unfurl. Once they are put in water, the blooms will quickly open and will last for about a week indoors.

Acne is the most popular skin disorder in America and it affects teenagers as well as adults. Here are some tips for a clearer face.

Before buying any over the counter treatments for acne, it is important to talk to a pharmacist or dermatologist to diagnose your specific acne problems. Many times it is easier to treat a problem if you know what the root causes are and what ailment is affecting you. If you want a clearer face it is important to be educated about your ailment.

There are tons of acne products on the market. Because each persons face is different it is important to try out several different products in order to find the product that treats your acne best. Many over the counter and prescription treatments can irritate your skin and do more harm than good. By experimenting, you can have a clearer face than with sticking with a less than satisfactory product.

Another tip for a clearer face is to follow the instructions on your acne product. Many people think more is better and clean their face using powerful products several times a day when it should only be used once or twice per day. You can cause serious problems to your skin which can include burns and uncomfortable irritation.

Another tip for a clearer face is to make sure that you are gentle to your face. Dont wash your face with hot water or dry it with a rough towel. Use warm water and a soft towel. You dont want to irritate your skin. So to get rid of acne, take a look at these tips for a clearer face.

Menstrual pain is something that joins women around the globe. Women have tried many methods to ease the pain and some have actually brought relief. One thing you may not have tried yet is treating menstrual pain with magnet therapy.

You know what menstrual cramps are; those mild contractions or aches and pains in your lower abdomen. Normally they occur right before menstruation starts and last a few days. For some women the monthly discomfort is more than they can bear but they don’t want to use medications to ease the pain. Magnetic therapy has been used to treat a variety of aches and pains.

Magnets create a field around them and some believe the magnetic field can block pain. This may be because the pain signals are blocked from ever reaching the brain. The effect is relief from menstrual cramps so you can go about your day free of pain.

Find several static magnets. These are magnets which create an unchanging field. Once they are placed on the body you won’t have to worry about their effectiveness changing. Static magnets are similar to ones you might find to stick messages to your refrigerator; however, you’ll probably want to find static magnets specifically made for easing pain.

As with any self-treatment you do at home, be sure to read the instructions. For menstrual cramps, you’ll want to attach the magnets to your clothing, as close to the skin as possible. This may mean sewing the magnets into the underwear so they are located near the area of pain.

You may need three to six sessions of using the magnets before you notice the pain subsiding. Keep the magnets in place only for the recommended time. This will ensure you don’t become used to the magnets which could decrease how effective they are. For the magnets to be the most effective, take them off as instructed and leave them off until told to put them on again.

Obviously your life will have to go on while you’re using magnet therapy. Remove the magnets prior to eating and then wait for at least an hour after you’ve eaten to avoid interfering with digestion. Magnets may not allow muscles in your digestive system to work properly, so it’s important to leave them off while eating and after so your food digests.

People using pacemakers or other devices such as defibrillators, insulin pumps, or liver infusion pumps should avoid magnets. Magnetic fields may affect the way the device works and could cause serious health conditions.

Menstrual pain isn’t something you have to endure each month. By using traditional and non-traditional methods, such as treating menstrual pain with magnet therapy, you may find a way to end the pain you feel each month.

Unfortunately, Mom may not have made the healthiest dishes. Here are two healthy comfort food recipes you may want to try.

Healthy Meat Loaf

* 2 teaspoons canola oil
* 1 chopped medium sweet onion
* 12-ounce bottle beer
* 1 teaspoon dried thyme
* 1 teaspoon dry mustard
* 3/4 teaspoon salt
* 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
* 1 1/4 pounds 95%-lean ground beef
* 1 1/4 pounds 93%-lean ground turkey
* 1 cup fresh whole-wheat breadcrumbs
* 1/4 cup chopped parsley
* 1 large egg, lightly beaten
* 1 egg white, lightly beaten

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Coat a loaf pan with cooking spray and set it aside. Place the onion in oil to sauté until it’s translucent and beginning to brown, approximately five minutes. Add the beer and increase the heat to high to bring it to a boil. Cook it until the liquid resembles syrup and reduces to about 3/4 cup (takes approximately 10 minutes). Transfer the liquid to a large bowl and stir in the seasonings; let this cool for at least 10 minutes.

Add the remaining ingredients and thoroughly combine the ingredients using clean hands. Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan and form it to resemble a loaf. Bake this in the oven until the internal temperature reaches 160 degree Fahrenheit which will take about 1 1/2 hours. Allow the meat loaf to rest for five minutes, drain off any liquid from the pan, slice, and enjoy.

Baked Mac and Cheese

* 3 tablespoons plain dry breadcrumbs
* 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil
* 1/4 teaspoon paprika
* 1 16-ounce or 10-ounce package frozen spinach, thawed
* 1 3/4 cups low-fat milk, divided
* 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
* 2 cups shredded extra-sharp Cheddar cheese
* 1 cup low-fat cottage cheese
* 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* Freshly ground pepper, to taste
* 8 ounces whole-wheat elbow macaroni

Put a large pot of water on to boil. Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Then coat an 8-inch square dish with cooking spray. Empty thawed spinach into a colander and remove excess water.

In a small bowl, mix breadcrumbs, oil, and paprika. Set aside and begin heating 1 1/2 cups of milk over medium heat in a large heavy pan. Heat this until steaming, but don’t let it boil or scorch. Whisk the remaining 1/4 cup milk in a small bowl with the flour until smooth. Add this to the hot milk, whisking all the while until the mixture thickens – about two to three minutes. Remove the sauce from the heat and add the cheddar, stirring until it is melted. Stir in the cottage cheese, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.

When the water comes to a boil, add the pasta and cook it until it’s not quite tender. Drain the noodles and then add them to the cheese mixture, ensuring the cheese covers all the noodles. Layer half the pasta in the bottom of the baking dish followed by spinach. Add the remaining pasta and then sprinkle breadcrumbs over the top. Bake until it is golden brown or about 25 to 30 minutes.

These healthy comfort food recipes may not taste exactly like Mom’s, but they still provide a sense of comfort while helping you live a healthier life. It sounds like the best of both worlds.

This society is paying the price for leading a more or less sedentary life. This is a life where people do little or physical activity. This, coupled with high fat diets have spawned a nation of overweight people not to mention that there are about 350,000 deaths each year in the United States due to obesity.

In a way, we cannot blame the people themselves because society has really changed since the 1st century. In those days, people used to be extremely active because the men had to hunt and build houses and fight wars while the women had to tend the home and the till the land. Today, people work in offices and drive there.

Then their idea of work is sitting behind a desk all day. This is a very low level of activity all while feeding your body with snacks and other foods that are rich in trans fats, protein and carbohydrates. This is a sure recipe for obesity and that is what almost 40% of the US population is grappling with.

There are other reasons why people end up being obese and with body fat. One reason is genetic. There are people whose bodies cannot process food efficiently and either digests it slowly and stores a lot of simply fail to generate the needed metabolic combustion rates to burn most of the fats that come into the body. All the same, these people, together with this that lead a life devoid of strenuous activity end up with the same problem.

Exercise is a great way to combat belly fat. One great exercise is to do a 30 second run on the spot before you begin anything else. Then rapid sit-ups can follow and these are very effective in eliminating belly fat if done consistently for a number of weeks.
