It started with The Big Bang Theory, which led to an obsession with all things Kaley Cuoco. But a byproduct of this was the fascination with Rock, Paper, Scissors, Spock, Lizard.

I found this infographic today from flowingdata.com about how to always win Rock, Paper, Scissor (RPS) which does mention Spock as the ultimate move but nothing on Lizard. Regardless, this should seriously help improve your game.

Males have a tendency to throw rock on their first try, inexperienced RPS players will subconsciously deliver the item that won previously, and paper is thrown least often, so use it as a surprise. And remember, when in doubt, throw the Spock. Your opponent will never know what hit him. You’ll be disqualified, but at least you’ll go out fighting.

Thank you for being one of our valued customers. We are writing to you today to make a very sad announcement. BeamItDown Software and the iFlow Reader will cease operations as of May 31, 2011. We absolutely do not want to do this, but Apple has made it completely impossible for anyone but Apple to make a profit selling contemporary ebooks on any iOS device. We cannot survive selling books at a loss and so we are forced to go out of business. We bet everything on Apple and iOS and then Apple killed us by changing the rules in the middle of the game. This is a very sad day for innovation on iOS in this important application category. We are a small company that thought we could build a better product. We think that we did but we are powerless against Apple’s absolute control of the iOS platform.
Free eBooks on the #1 Rated eBook Reader for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch

I know it’s just my perception but perception eventually becomes reality. I keep reading more and more stories across then entire spectrum of iOS application developers where they are being screwed by Apple.

Apple just passed Google in valuation so stories like the above are increasingly reminiscent of Microsoft in the 90′s. Crushing innovation, unfair pricing and backroom deals. Watching small companies innovate and then including the functionality into Windows for free. Changing the development tools to lock in developers, etc.

I’m not saying that Apple = Microsoft but it certainly is a possibility that Apple could turn into the Evil Empire itself. I’ve always thought that Steve Jobs had a certain jealousy of Bill Gates, but not like this….not like this.

You NEED to watch Jon Stewarts impassioned RIP on Congress, specifically Congressman Cliff Stearns, regarding the Zadroga Bill.

Basically, before 911 first responders can get money for the cancers and other illness they have gotten from responding to the most heinous attack on American soil in 50 years, they have to be checked against the terrorist watch list.

i can’t do justice to explaining why this is such asshattery. Congressman Henry Waxman is an asshat too. He’s always an asshat so, as a Republican myself, I’m mostly concerned with the asshattery of Cliff Stearns, 911 first responder hater.

When I first saw the video of Jon Stewart going off, I could
see
in his
eyes that he
wasn’t fucking aroundI could see in his eyes that he wasn’t fucking around. I think that if there wasn’t a studio audience to laugh and provide feedback, Jon would have either cried or seriously used the word “fuck”, several orders of a magnitude, more than he did.

WATCH THE VIDEOS. THIS is what’s wrong with our country.

Here’s the setup:

Since I’m about a month away from being done with University and entering the programmer workforce, I’ve taken to asking my classmates what type of starting salaries they’re getting at their first jobs.
The Programmer Salary Taboo

and…..the money shot:

To put my money where my mouth is, here’s some information on the starting salaries for four big technology companies based on my informal observations. I’d be pretty hypocritical if I advocated disclosure without any sharing information myself! In each of these cases, I’ve consulted at least three people who received full-time offers from the company in question, so these figures are approximate (and specific to undergrads).

Google: The standard for the Mountain View office and a number of other large US offices is about $100,000/year, but they do scale that figure based on where you live by some secret factor. I’ve heard figures between $45k and $71k (tending towards the higher end) for the value of stock they give you over a four year vesting period, and Google bonuses can count for $45,000 per year or more.
Amazon: About $87,000/year, and they’re fairly well known for not being too willing to negotiate starting salary. They typically offer between $40,000 and $50,000 worth of stock over four years, with a non-uniform vesting period (you get more the longer you stay).
Microsoft: Around $90,000 per year on average, although I’ve heard as low as $80,000. Typically comes with about $50,000 worth of stock over four years.
Facebook: Around $85,000-$90,000 per year. The stock situation is complicated, but I believe between 8,000 and 10,000 restricted stock units over four years is typical, which potentially could be worth more than $200,000 if you believe the secondary market prices, which have been as high as $28/share.
The Programmer Salary Taboo

I thought this was a pretty interesting article and I hope that the guy did his research because I want to believe that it’s true.

I have to admit, it’s a lot lower than I thought until I remember that this is STARTING salaries, fresh out of school. THEN I’m like “bastards”.

But hey, I’m rolling in the pennies with this blog…Similar Posts:

Google follow internet technology. Google follows what people do. Google can’t do it too quickly or it will freak people out. A few search engines were years ahead of Google with LSI and Semantic search. Google can’t do it too slowly or Google will not be where it is supposed to be and someone else will be there and quick, YouTube. And Google just can’t get some things right, maybe too many PHD’s and not enough hard knocks.
Days ago, I posted an insightful and thought provoking piece on why it might not be in your best interest as a developer to be developing for the Myspace platform. I also might have mentioned that I thought Silverlight was dumb.

Hours later, noted Senior Architect for Parlance Corporation, Mark LaFleur, author of the Soapbox 2.0 blog viciously attacked my piece using words such as “rhetoric” and “claim”. While it’s taken me 4 sleepless nights to reply, I only have to quote this headline to prove my point that Myspace is a dead platform:

Zynga Discontinues Mafia Wars Game On Myspace

You might be a genius when it comes to programming UCMA, a Microsoft MVP for Microsoft Communications Server, work heavily with the latest Microsoft technologies including ASP.NET, Silverlight, WPF, WCF, Entity Framework, SharePoint, SQL Server and Office Communications Server, but until you bring back Mafia Wars on Myspace WITH all my achievements…

Game. Set. Match, Mr. LeFleur.

p.s. Silverlight still sucks and I’m frankly surprised that Microsoft hasn’t revised their help system to require it…ya know like IE4…although it is weird how I can never stop it from showing up in my optional windows updates list…

p.p.s. Ray Ozzie rulez.
