One of the major challenges that most of us seem to struggle with during the winter months is dry skin. One obvious reason can be the cold weather, but worse is the different climates we experience when we go from outside to inside and then back out! And this can be an issue no matter the weather outside.

So here are a few tips that can fight the dreaded “dry face” and “dry knees“, whether you’re in New York City or sunny Miami Beach.

• Coconuts – a slight acquired taste but there is an obvious reason (besides marketing) that makes its drink so popular. Coconut milk contains oils that remain present in its water that are part of the essential ingredients for a healthy skin barrier. Drinking it can help a little, but eating a fresh coconut can produce better results!
• Humidifier – not into eating your way to moister skin? Try a humidifier! It certainly has helped me cope better with the dry air here in So. Cal. Just place it in your bedroom at night and you can have healthier looking skin in the morning. A great alternative for those not interested in spending the money is to use a large pot of water instead.
• Ingredients – face moisturizers with ingredients that include – Hyaluronic acid, Glycerin and Squalene are great choices. And for the body, ingredients that work well are Petrolatum, Silicone and Shea Butter.

Hey, winter is cold. And in some places, it’s really cold!

So since we have to adjust to the winter weather, and not the other way around, let’s make sure that your grooming regimen can handle this cold and VERY dry time of year!

Hair – Conditioners help to replenish the natural oils in your scalp so this should be done at least twice a week. And, no matter what you style your hair with, always start with a moisturizing hair cream (ex. Grooming Creme) first.

Face – Do you shave?  If you do, protection is even more important during the winter months. Proper shaving prep is paramount! And, always, always finish with an after shave balm (see: Village Barber Aftershave Balm or 3 IN 1 Face Balm by Burke Avenue).

Question: I used to get tons of nicks and bumps from shaving, but ever since I started to apply twice the amount of shaving cream, it has helped drastically. Am I doing the right thing, or will this practice eventually create another problem? – David S.

Answer:

David, this is a great question! I think it’s great that you took your time to figure out a solution to your shaving concerns. As long and you follow your shave with a post-shave regimen (i.e. after-shave balm & moisturizer), the only long term affects you may suffer is a lighter wallet! But, in my opinion it’s worth it if your face looks and feels better.

The process you discovered, is actually an age-old barbering practice used for decades upon decades. It is called “over-prepping“, and it is employed when a barber is called to work on what is recognized as an unusually tough beard. The shaving cream is designed to create moisture in the beard while protecting the skin from the blade. The more moisture, the easier it will be for the beard to come off.

Just be conscientious to avoid clogging of the blade, as it usually leads to nicks, and a not-so-smooth shave. So rinse your razor frequently and enjoy your new trick.

So with that being said, wouldn’t it be safe to say that knowing the proper ways to shave to avoid razor burn, redness, skin darkening (hyper-pigmentation) or unsightly ingrown hairs would be important? I mean, if a good percentage of your face is covered with one or several of these symptoms how healthy could your skin look/feel or really be?

Here are the tips to healthier feeling and looking skin if you’re a wet-shaver! And an awesome video to go with it – How To: Shave 

1. Know your face – Knowing the direction your hair grows is best, especially if going against the grain has ever caused you pain. Also, be aware of the sensitive areas of the skin. This way you can prep those areas heavier or leave for last.
2. Moisture – You can never have too much moisture on your face. The wetter and softer you can get your face, the less effort it is to take the beard off. This equals less strokes, which means less time the blade is on your face. If you want it a bit closer, re-lather!
3. Heal & Moisturize – A splash of cold water (or the “Big Chill“) will bring your skin back in balance by calming and also tightening the skin. Then, grab your favorite aftershave balm that’s designed to heal and also moisturize the skin.  The healing is especially important because your skin will definitely be going through this process again very soon!

PS… Don’t forget the other half of your (from the nose up!). Use a moisturizer to seal-in the moisture on the rest of the face including your shaved areas. Shave areas get double the moisture protection (aftershave balm & moisturizer) this way!

1. Keep it dry – for electric shavers, you need your beard to be dry to the touch in order to maximize the cutting capability of your shaver; never wash you face before.
2. Consider a pre-shave solution – no not a pre-shave oil; in this case the pre-shave solution mimics the pre-shave oil by creating a protective barrier on your skin that allows for a better glide and a closer shave but without the risk of clogging your shaver. These solutions work well with trimmers as well.
3. Brands like: Jack Black , Lab Series, Kyoku carry this item.  Sensitive areas 1st – many electric shavers generate heat quickly throughout the course of a shave, and where there’s heat there’s usually irritation (especially if it’s already sensitive).  So shave the sensitive areas (i.e. neck) first, while the shaver is still cool.
4. Know your tool – to get the best out of your shaver be mindful of the following: Rotary – shave in small circular motions; Foil – shave with the grain, and against on a case by case basis; Trimmers – work like small clippers, and therefore do a great job of keeping the face clean shaven; use them as you would use your regular clippers.
5. Clean – shavers must be maintained to maximize their cutting ability.  For the best daily results clean after every shave, at worst no longer than after every 3rd.  For foil shavers specifically, be sure to replace the screen and blades once year. And for all options-DON’T FORGET THE OIL!  
6. Aftershave – dry shaving can be just as aggressive as using razors, so the use of aftershave balms designed to – soothe, heal and moisturize your skin are encouraged. So let’s start by first identifying if you have a tough beard.

Here are a few of the signs:

• You have an afternoon shadow, not a 5 o’clock one.
• You cannot seem to get you beard moist enough to shave.

Now, most of the time this question is coming from men that have always shaved with electric shaving tools like trimmers, clippers or electric shavers (foil or rotary). But, a small number of them are also young men just trying  to figure out “the whole shaving thing”, or guys that have always worn beards. Their primary reason for this question is to find out if their skin will react poorly to the use of a razor. The biggest fear 9 times out of 10 – ingrown hairs.

The most straight-forward short answer? The easiest way to determine whether the shaving process will work for them, is to first look at how their beard grows. If the majority of their beard grows in a direction that can be followed by a razor (with the grain), then the chances of irritation, especially ingrown hairs will be minimal. However, if shaving with the grain will be a challenge due the beard hair growing in several directions (i.e. towards the ear, nose, in circles…), then the chances of irritation increase. Of course, I’m not saying this to turn them (or you) away from trying out the razor, it’s simply a way of knowing what challenges if any, may present themselves.

Let’s start with WHY it’s happening:

The aggressive nature of shaving, whether it’s with a razor or an electric shaver, can cause skin discoloration. The rubbing or scraping action of the blades can cause minor cuts to the skin, causing “hyper-pigmentation“, which is the skin’s way of replacing color to the damaged area.

Here are 3 helpful tips to rid your face of frustrating skin darkening from shaving:

1. PREP WELL –  Whether it’s a wet-shave or an electric shave, make sure you follow the necessary steps to prepare the skin for shaving. This will reduce any nicks that may result. (See Article: Shaving 101).
2. AVOID SHAVING AGAINST-THE-GRAIN – This practice can not only cause irritation, but in some cases nicks to the skin, which result in the hair being pulled and snagged instead of cut.
3. AVOID USING PRODUCTS THAT CONTAINS ALCOHOL – Alcohol can dry, harden and even darken the skin. Stick with aftershave balms that do not contain the ingredient alcohol.

Prepare your skin.

Two items that are a must; a daily moisturizer with SPF (for the day) and Sunblock (for the day to play).

On the market, I have noticed that there have been a significant increase of daily moisturizers that have successfully blended moisture, SPF protection and healing into one tube. So, take a look at my recommendations (below) and please, please engage in the Science Note to get more sound information on the importance of SPF.

SCIENCE NOTE

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) numbers on a package can range from as low as 2 to as high as 60.  These numbers refer to the product’s ability to screen or block out the sun’s burning rays.

The SPF rating is calculated by comparing the amount of time needed to produce a sunburn on protected skin to the amount of time needed to cause a sunburn on unprotected skin.

Let us take for instance a fair-skinned person who would normally turn red after 10 minutes in the sun.  Ten minutes is their “initial burning time.”  If that person uses a sunscreen with SPF 2, it takes 20 minutes in the sun for that person’s skin to turn red.  Now, if that person uses a sunscreen with SPF 15, it multiplies the initial burning time by 15, so it takes 150 minutes, or 2 and a half hours, for that person’s skin to turn red.

Sunscreens with an SPF of 15 or higher are generally thought to provide useful protection from the sun’s harmful rays.

Ever looked at someone sporting a goatee and wonder why it looks like facial hair has taken over nearly half his face? It appears too wide to be a goatee, but it’s not quite a beard, either. This is a prime example of a good goatee gone bad. This is a style that should never own your face, it should only enhance it. And when it comes to a goatee there is such a thing as “too much!”

Of course there are many guys who absolutely win at rocking this style. But the ones that lose, lose big! And clearly the choice of allowing the goatee to wear you and not the other way around is just asking for an intervention!

Here’s the bottom line. The goal of wearing a goatee is to make sure that the overall size never overpowers your face. The best way of preventing this is by controlling the width. Because the wider the goatee, the fuller the face will appear. Not to mention, it will also appear like a cover-up and no longer a style, further diminishing its enhancing capabilities.

So what do you do to keep everything in order? Well, I’m glad you asked!

It’s an easy trick that I’ve found to work for all face shapes: Never allow the beard to stretch beyond the iris of the eyes. This practice will allow the face to always appear slimmer, while also creating proper symmetrical balance. Now what you do with the rest of the beard is clearly up to you. But, I do know one thing… it’s much easier to play around once the boundaries have been set.

It’s interesting how men’s grooming practices can be so different from city to city!

However, the reason for oily skin in this part of the country wasn’t due to the changes in weather conditions or specific skin-types. Most men suffered from oily-skin because they exfoliated and washed their face too often, and never followed with a moisturizer because they felt that their skin was too oily to need it!

You see, here’s the thing. The practice of using a face cleanser frees the skin of oil and dirt, and exfoliation removes dead skin cells to allow for younger cells to reach the surface. Both practices if done too often (i.e. 3x’s+ a day), will severely dry the skin. Dry skin will then protect itself by going into “overdrive” – overproducing it’s natural oils to remedy the situation, leaving the skin oftentimes too oily and prone to acne.

The truth is that many of these men didn’t have “naturally” oily skin at all! It was just their common practice of over washing their skin, which was made worse by not moisturizing.

So here’s the remedy! Stick with a daily face wash regimen of morning and night, followed by a daily moisturizer. Also, consider a once, but no more than twice, a week exfoliation. This will allow your skin the chance to stay in proper moisture balance or fall back into it, if that’s the case for you.

How much time do we really spend on choosing the best shampoo for our hair?

Realistically speaking, for most of us, we really don’t see a need to hunt for a specific type of shampoo unless we notice something wrong with our hair or scalp.

That being said, here’s a breakdown of the differences for if and when you see the need to use something other than “normal” shampoos!

Clarifying shampoos are developed with a higher acid content in order to remove excess buildup of styling products in the hair. They are also a popular choice for removing harsh chemicals after swimming in pool water. Note: Due to it’s higher acid content, this shampoo type can cause dryness and also damage to the scalp so avoid using more than once per month.

Thickening shampoos are shampoos that help the hair to swell and retain water giving the appearance of fuller hair. Note: Because of the swollen state of the hair’s cuticle, it can be more vulnerable to breakage. So following with a conditioner  within the same family (thickening) is best! 

Dandruff shampoos are a formulation of ingredients that help to prevent itching and flaking that is associated with dandruff. Dandruff is best described as thick flakes and an irritated scalp. Smaller, fine white flakes are more than likely dry scalp. So make sure you recognize the difference before choosing this shampoo (see more here!). Note: Dandruff shampoos can often cause excessive dryness. So start by using every other day, alternating with a good moisturizing shampoo. 

Shampoos for:

• Oily hair – contain cleansers designed to remove as much oil as possible from the hair and scalp. Note: Can cause excessive dryness for men with normal scalps.
• Dry hair – designed specifically to add moisture to the hair and scalp. Note: Ideal for very dry hair (easy to break, often frizzy); can weigh down normal hair.
• Normal hair – very gentle and won’t strip the natural oils for the hair and scalp.

I’m sure some of you are probably thinking, “sorry for what Craig?”. Well, I’m apologizing for not holding up my end of the bargain to remain consistent with the content on this site. I started this blog 8 years ago in an effort to educate my clientele as well as the public on grooming with specific knowledge of what I experienced from the barber chair. It was fun from the start-up, especially as I began to recognize the positive impact I was making with you as my TMR family and in the men’s grooming industry.

At the time, I was writing 3 articles a week, working full-time at a barbershop, managing a small on-location clientele and traveling around the country as a spokesperson for Lab Series Skincare for Men. I “managed” all of this for 5+ years without missing a beat (kind of), while somehow also maintaining a relationship with my wife!

When my son, Isaac, was born, his presence challenged me to be more present for him and my wife. Realistically, it was no longer about me but us as a family. Six years into running TheMensRoom.com, I began tapering off my writing and clearly left many of you with unmet needs (yes, I read the emails). So again, my sincere apology.

This year, my goal is to be intentional in reshaping TheMensRoom.com to be a more solid destination for readers. The changes will happen over time and will cover several design elements but, most importantly, the content will remain empowering, consistent (working on schedule) and easy to find. With that said, I truly hope you stay on this ride with me because I really enjoy the company!

A few weeks ago a good friend of mine- Mark Herro (you may know him more as Mantic59), asked if I’d be interested in sharing the story on his blog- Sharpologist.com on how my shave cream finally came to be well, real. As many of you may know it was a pretty tough road to get to this point of now having my first shave cream. Nevertheless, what started as a fairly easy article to write ended up being one of the most transparent life stories I have ever shared publicly. It’s a story about me failing and then finding the ability to move on.

Anyway, we all know that when we get older the hairs on our heads leave to find a new place to grow…like our eyebrows, ears and noses. Not exactly, but you get my point.

So, as your eyebrows get unruly ask your barber to trim them for you.  If you have more than the barber is interested in handling (i.e. thick uni-brows) find a local salon or spa and ask the esthetician to trim them and make them two again by waxing them.  But guys, let’s stay away from giving them too much shape… This could cause weird stares and even make your girlfriend a bit jealous that your brows look better than hers!

Many men are tempted to shave between the brows. I have one word for you… DON’T! Typical razors are wider than the space between brows, so you will end up with too much space between them.  Also, the hair will always seem to grow back much quicker. Honestly, with such a small space it’s easier to pluck.

Want to try it at home? Ask your barber to get you started and then handle the maintenance yourself.  Invest in a pair of tweezers, like the Tweezerman Slant Tweezers and pluck between the brows.

Here’s why. Hair has three stages of growth and each strand of hair is growing at different stages.

The stages are called:

• Anagen – the active growth phase. During this phasae the hair grows 1 cm every 28 days.
• Catagen – also known as the transitional phase, allows the follicle to, in a sense, renew itself.
• Telogen – this process causes the normal hair loss known as “shedding”.

All three phases occur simultaneously; one strand of hair may be in the anagen phase, while another is in the telogen phase.

So here’s the bottom line, if you’ve figured out how to prevent ingrown hairs, you’ve accomplished one of the most important aspects of shaving. All that’s left is to be aware that a few may return, and be prepared with this – Post: Controlling Ingrown Hairs.

Guys let’s face it, shaving nicks are the worst!

Items needed: Cube of ice (1); alum block / or stick; styptic powder

• Step 1: Apply the ice cube to the nicked area for at least 15 seconds. (This slows down the bleeding.)
• Step 2: Apply a wet (run under cool water for a 1 sec.) alum block (or stick) to the affected area in a circular motion for at least 30 seconds. — If 90% of the bleeding has not stopped continue for another 15-30 seconds. 
• Step 3: Once 90% of the bleeding has stopped, dry the area with a towel or wash rag. Then immediately apply a pinch of styptic powder to the affected area. Allow the nick to absorb the powder and dust off the remaining powder.

That’s it. Fixing a shaving nick in under a minute!

Yeah I said it…!

I bet you didn’t know that one way to cut the excess oil buildup is to wash your hair with lemon juice (1 lemon + 1 cup or water); however, my favorite is a beer wash. Beer gets the scalp squeaky clean, and leaves your hair shiny and oil free!

Not into depleting your college football stash? Well, here are a few other ways to keep the oily hair at bay…

1. Cool it. – Long exposure to heat, vigorous brushing or combing stimulates the scalp to produce more oil. Try limiting the time you use the blow dryer, and see if you can’t achieve your ideal hairstyle in fewer strokes.
2. Raise your PH. – try a shampoo with a higher pH since they are specifically created for oily hair. The easiest way to find them is to look for the labels designated, “for oily hair.”

But seriously, I always tend to receive a lot more emails regarding oily hair during the warmer months. So below is a list of solutions, and the reason oily hair happens in the first place. Because honestly, what good is a solution without first understanding the reason behind it, right?

The Reason:

The oil found in your hair is called sebum, and it is produced by the sebaceous glands in your scalp for the sole purpose of moisturizing your scalp.  Hair that becomes too oily is the result of the overactivity of the sebaceous glands, which can be caused by stress, a hormonal change (common in teenagers), and a diet that consists of oily foods.  Here are a few things you can try to help reduce the production of sebum within more normal levels:

• Wash your hair less: Shampoos are designed to strip the oils from your hair and scalp. Shampooing too often makes your scalp dry, forcing your scalp to work overtime to replace the oils lost.
• Be gentle: Vigorous brushing and scrubbing while shampooing also stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more oils.
•  Switch shampoos: There is nothing wrong with Head and Shoulders, but in your case, you suffer from oily hair, not dandruff. Use a clarifying shampoo that has a mild pH instead.
• Find a balance: It is recommended to shampoo two to three times a week. Start by shampooing your hair once a day, and adjust from there.
• A little baby powder: Baby powder is made to absorb moisture. So if your hair feels a bit greasy and you don’t have time for a shower, give it a try! (Just keep in mind that the darker the hair color the more noticeable…)
• The beer wash: That ‘s right! Beer gets the scalp squeaky clean, and leaves your hair shiny and oil free. (Read more here!)

* Be sure to condition your hair once a week, and if you are blow-drying your hair, limit the length of time the heat is   on your scalp. Long exposure to heat on the scalp also stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce oil.

After spending 10 years in Los Angeles, my wife and I (after a great deal of thought and planning), decided that is was time to move back home to So. Florida with our 4yr old son- Isaac. It was a move focused on being closer to parents for family support, more affordable living and career expansion. We sold and gave away all of our material goods and jumped feet-first into our decision to have a better work/life balance.

But, as much as I’d love to say that this was a happy ending decision, it was far from it. This move proved to be an extremely challenging experience. Everyday seemed to be a difficult test: emotionally, spiritually and even financially. My wife and I questioned our move back every minute of every day. And, the icing on the cake was that our son was struggling with his new preschool experience that was sadly far from his Reggio Emilia-inspired one in California.

Then, after 6 months of fighting the difficult “swim up-stream” we gave in and just surrendered.

We stopped fighting and started to embrace the tough moments. We began recognizing that the support of our families and new friends came in many welcoming forms. We began to see that the reason we moved back to Florida wasn’t for what “we” wanted. It was to take a break (for however long) from the very noisy & busy grinding life we lived in Los Angeles for the last 10yrs. It was for me to put my career in proper perspective and in it’s rightful place- after God and family. It was to re-connect to our parents in a more loving and adult way. And finally, it was for Isaac to get to know, feel and experience his grandparents and great-grandparents more.

You see, “our” plan was never “ours” to begin with. We realized that it was bigger than “us”. It was time designated for us to PAUSE and take a step back in a way that only happens when you UN-PLUG.

For 11 months we lived in Miami, FL. We lived there long enough to experience everything we needed to re-balance our lives and re-purpose our purpose. Every day of those 11 months was divinely orchestrated even down to me recognizing that my career expansion was not for Miami.  And, you know what? I can say confidently that we made it through these tough times, better than when we started.

You see, too often we are afraid to try something different for the fear that things won’t work out. But in actuality, even when it feels like it hasn’t, it really has! It’s because, in every challenge there is an opportunity to grow wiser through the experiences. For us, we gained a new perspective on life and what’s truly important in the long run. And as far as the 11 months go, it’s was truly an unforgettable experience packaged in a very short span of time in light of our overall life experience. So, be encouraged; do the thing that scares you…you’ll be the better for it!

I wrote an article several years ago about men visiting the barbershop and claiming that their face was sensitive after they shaved.

Do you know what was the most consistent important recommendation I passed on to them? It was to keep the skin hydrated, with a moisturizer of course!  Sure, we must remember to maximize the moisture on our skin when shaving, but during the day and night, the skin also needs to stay moist. Consistently moist skin, gives the face the strength needed to handle the unforgiving nature of the sharp blade. So be sure to add that extra step, both AM and PM, because supple skin is also healthier skin!

How many of you remember those long days of trying to ignore how itchy your face felt in the beginning? Well, it’s safe to say that if you want to grow a beard you’ll get this itch, at some point.

Why does this happen, you may wonder. The reason is simply due to the prickly ends of your beard hairs curling back onto your skin and irritating the heck out your face! But no need to worry.

Here are 2 few quick tips to get your face feeling itch free in minutes!

1. Scratch it back! – Keeping your face free of dead skin cells keeps the face from feeling dry and irritated which can oftentimes lead to your face feeling itchy. 2. Soften it up! – Guys in general are pretty inconsistent when it comes to using a moisturizer, especially the one who choose to grow beards. A moisturizer or even a beard oil aids in keeping the skin moist so dryness that leads to itching doesn’t kick in. And it also softens the hairs a bit so their bite is less effective. Skin Science…

The skin is comprised of water, ceramides, proteins and lipids that exist in perfect balance. When the balance is properly maintained, water and nutrients are appropriately delivered to all layers.

Water originates deep within the skin (the dermal layers), and makes its way toward the surface to hydrate the other skin cells. But, when water comes into contact with air, it tends to evaporate, causing dryness of the skin.

So what do you do?

Drink lots of water and find a moisturizer that works!

Dermatologists recommend moisturizers that contain active ingredients, like retinol, to stimulate cellular activity while providing hydration.

Well, here’s a barber trick that I learned a long time ago, that can help you in-between appointments to the barbershop! I call it “smoothing out”.  It’s a simple trick that requires trimmers or a pair of clippers (w/ comb guards).

• First select the comb guard that best fits the existing hair length, and attach it to the trimmer or clippers.
• Next, trim the facial hair downwards (towards the neck). This process only cuts the top portion of the beard or mustache, leaving the hair length intact. As a result, the only hairs cut are the hairs sticking out (or beginning to curl), thereby recreating the original neater style.

This is a simple and easy trick that can take less than 5 minutes to accomplish in the morning. So, give it a try and see how it works for you!

“Men’s products, women’s products…Is our skin really that different?”

I am asked this question all the time… and for good reason! One of the many reasons why men use their girlfriend’s or wive’s grooming products is simply because it’s easily accessible!

Hey, why go shopping when you can just shop through her products? Besides if it’s good enough for her, it should work for you… right?

Unfortunately, as much as I’d like to agree… I can’t!

Why, because our skin IS truly different. Here are a few important differences besides facial hair!

• A man’s skin is about 25% thicker than a woman’s – the higher levels of testosterone cause a man’s dermis and epidermis skin layers to be thicker and have more elastin and collagen (gives skin firmness and elasticity). The good news: A man’s resistance to aging skin is higher than a woman’s.
• A man’s pores are almost 2x the size of a woman’s – Because of this fact, men are much more susceptible to acne outbreaks and clogged pores than we may think.
• Men have oilier skin – Thanks to our thicker skin, the skin’s oil glads naturally produce more oil than the average woman. In many cases this causes the infamous “Shiny Face” effect!

So what does this mean?

Well, because a man’s skin is thicker, oilier, and more susceptible to acne, we should consider products that moisturize and cleanse more appropriately than a woman’s product; all while keeping us from looking too shiny. And where do we find such products…? You see where I’m going!

I get an overwhelming number of emails from guys who get loads of irritation (redness, burning, ingrown hairs…) on their necks, but nowhere else on their faces. So here’s the deal. If there isn’t a specific pattern to follow along the neck to shave “with the grain“. Then the odds are that you will always be shaving “against the grain“. If this is the case, then irritation surely will be waiting to appear.

So here’s how to handle the situation.

If you get a great shave on the face, stick with the razor only in this area. But where the majority of your shaving issues are on your neck, create an imaginary line and DO NOT use the razor in this area. For the area you’ve established as an irritation haven on your neck, shave it with trimmers. This way of shaving is a 2-step process but it is a tried–&–true method of getting a close and comfortable shave without any sign of irritation!

**Side note: Since shaving with trimmers will not produce a razor close shave, shaving the neck daily may be required to keep the neck looking stubble free.

Dapperman’s “handcrafted” Pomade delivers all of this along with a great fragrance. I packed it in my work bag to try it on several of my clients and they loved it! Of course, I did too. It felt very light in their hair while still getting the job done.

So needless to say, when the temperature rises in the summer months, I’m always searching for an upgrade in my deodorant. So here are a few that I know really do an A+ job.

Certain Dri

So this is my “special occasion” deodorant/antiperspirant. I only use it when I wear a shirt that will quickly reveal that I’m sweating (i.e. colored dress shirts). This is because this antiperspirant temporarily blocks the sweat glands from producing sweat. But as I said, I use this occasionally simply because  I never want to suspend for a long period of time what nature is supposed to do!

RazorRock Deodorant Spray

Looking for a natural way to fight odor? This deodorant spray fights odor, shirt stains and it won’t compete with your cologne! It’s fragrance free, hypoallergenic, and it contains no alcohol or aluminium chlorohydrate .  Mineral salts along with aloe vera create an odor fighting system that keeps you fresh for up to 24hrs.

Here’s another deodorant/antiperspirant that essentially has no fragrance. It works well into the evening and surprising never stained my clothes. And, since I tested it on some of the hottest days this year at the barbershop it gets a thumbs up!

This deodorant has been my “go-to” since puberty and it has never disappointed! So rest assured, it can handle ALL kinds of body temperature changes. I won’t necessarily keep you dry but it will definitely SLAY odor!

They’re newest shavers- Panasonic’s ARC-Series merges innovation, with Japaneses sword-making skills, to craft blades and foils for a close and comfortable shaving experience. For me, I’m big on closeness, comfort, and most importantly an electric shaving tool that can produce all of this with reduced or no irritation!

The ARC-Series has a 3-blade cutting system aptl;y named the ARC3- ES-LT7N and a 5-blade named the ARC5- ES-LV9N. With the ARC3, I was able to get a close shave but I needed to go over the same area multiple times to accomplish this in both wet & dry environments. So, in order to reduce shaving passes and time, I used this shaver solely in the shower w/ a pre-shave oil and/or shave cream. This seemed to do the trick! The “wet-option”, helped reduce shaving passes and of course time. Which of course, is the perfect recipe for limiting the chances of irritation. Ideally, this shaver would work great for men with fine and/or sparse facial hair.

The ARC5 on the other-hand, provided a close & comfortable shave with very little effort in both wet & dry environments. The plus, for me was that even though the cutting technology promotes the closest shave with a lift-cut system, it kept my facial hair “above the skin-line“ but not visible to the eyes. That for me is a winner in my book! Coarse, curly, facial hair guys with ingrown hair concerns now have another electric shaving option in the ARC5.

The pop-up trimmer for both shavers are definitely more than decoration, being that they actually provide a pretty good clean-up. And the cleaning systems for each do a great job removing excess hair, lubricating, and drying the blades.  Overall, Panasonic’s ARC-Series delivers on closeness and certainly ease of shaving and cleaning. But, for me the ARC5 is the clear winner!

We all know that 1st impressions are lasting ones and looking your best speaks volumes! So, here are a few tips on how to make your “big day” your best looking day.

(1). Get your haircut 2-3 days before the big day. A fresh haircut is always a great look, however, in pictures a 2-3 day old haircut can look even better! For one, it’s kinder on the lenses and you look more natural. Also, freshly cut hairstyles can be a distraction to your interviewer when trying to land that perfect job.

(2). Beards are still a big deal nowadays, but unless you’re 100% certain that sportin’ facial hair is acceptable, shave the night before. The night before approach aids in calming any potential (visible) irritation. And based on my experience, irritation shows up when you least expect it. So for important days like these, always expect it that way you can take the necessary steps to avoid it.

(3). Remember my manicure post? Well, any big day is going to require well manicured hands. However, in an interview, steer clear of high-buff fingernails. A shiny distraction while expressing yourself in an interview will absolutely draw attention away from the dialogue you’re having (save it for when you get the job!).

(4). Lastly, there is a thin line between a lasting “subtle” fragrance and lasting “overbearing” one. Even the greatest smelling colognes can go overboard! So go without, or  find a subtle fragrance that works for you. This way your “soon to be” won’t pass out from the fumes at the altar. And, your interviewer will remember you for your talents and not the scent you left behind!

I tried the pomade 1st because it’s a very popular category at the moment, due to our current hair trends.

What I liked about the pomade is that it has a light-weight texture that produces minimal shine, and leaves no build-up like some of its competitors. These three components make it a welcoming choice for all hair lengths and types, which is perfect for how they are positioning their brand. I would however like to see additional development in the fragrance in order to accomplish a scent that remains consistent throughout the day. But, changes always come with the territory when building a great product!
