Videographer Jason Jonas Gonzalez got great footage at our show at the Lagunitas Beer Sanctuary. Lagunitas sound engineer Zach Lindenbusch recorded the entire show and then mixed a mastered it. We’ll be using both the video and audio from that high energy show.

Gonna be fun! We will, of course, be sharing as soon as possible. Stay tuned.

March 15 – kicking off the St. Pat’s weekend – 9:30pm onward – Smiley’s Saloon, Bolinas. We will be rocking the faultline till past midnight.

March 16 – Annual St. Patrick’s Celebration – 7:00pm-10:00pm – Norm’s Grille, Danville. This is an all day event, kid-friendly, no cover! Irish dancers, professional Leprechaun, indoors/outdoors.

March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day! – 3:00pm-6:00pm – Lagunitas Beer Sanctuary, Petaluma. No cover. All ages, kid and dog friendly. For those of you who like to hit the hay early this is a great chance to eat and drink dance and party all before the sun sets…which is 7:19pm that day if you really must know.

It was a beautiful day, just like today. Sonoma County gets these fabulous, oddly warm days in February. GDub picked me up after work. We drove the back roads from Penngrove to Santa Rosa. I don’t remember all of what happened as we chatted and enjoyed each other’s company. It didn’t matter. We were together. We came back to my pad and hung out in the living room for more talking while we drank pots of herb tea and then…not long after I saw arcs of light coming through his body into mine and from mine into his…we connected in the “biblical sense”. It was very nice.

We didn’t spend a night apart for months.

I wrote “Street Dog” to surprise Mr. Wium when I “competed” in the second Ms. Accordion / Main Squeeze contest in San Francisco that September. Tom Torriglia put on the event at the Cannery.

I was writing lyrics in my head as we drove to the show. I loved singing it to him in front of hundreds of people.

I took second place and still have my “crown”.

Come dance the winter blues and sniffles away!

We enjoyed playing this holiday gig on December 9, 2012 very much. It is all the sweeter knowing that the feeling was mutual.

The Mad Maggies at Openhouse

The Mad Maggies like to call themselves “musicians without borders.” With such instruments as a tuba, sax, and accordion, along with lead and bass guitar and drums, and dressed in kilts, cowboy boots, and Hawaiian shirts, their music is a jambalaya of music.

Dressed in cowboy boots, green tights, a short plaid skirt, a long single braid trailing down her back, topped off with a brown bowler, Maggie sang a Caribbean song about Sally Duggan. Their next song began with the tuba leading and the clang of a cow bell, then Maggie joined in on her accordion, and it sounded like a cross between an Israeli and Italian folk song.

By this time, the audience knew this show was going to be different. The Mad Maggies were full of energy, stomping and singing, and the audience clapped along, wearing broad smiles. Some of the attendees at the holiday gathering at Openhouse who were outside drifted in to listen to the music and laughed with delight at the crazy and delightful tunes.

Maggie introduced a song “Magdalena’s Revenge” noting that this song usually knocks the dust off the ceiling. Some of the men and women standing in the back couldn’t help but dance to this fiery tune! The band then segued into some holiday tunes, of course with a Mad Maggie twist, with Maggie playing the ukulele on “Santa Baby” and Ray playing a beautiful solo on the sax.

It was a beautiful, sunny December afternoon as the Mad Maggies closed their show with a brisk tune bouncing along, with the line, “Shake those bones. Life’s a mystery; it’s anyone’s guess.” With the eclectic band jamming, the electric guitar and sax soaring, and the tuba and accordion punctuating the song, followed by a drum solo, it felt like a whoosh of air swept into the room and the audience responded with rousing applause.

Goodbye 2012, Hello 2013

2012: We released our 6th album “Up North, Out West” — a self-bootlegged field recording of our various out of state gigs. We toured the Pacific Northwest in March, hit Nebraska in June, and St. Paul in September. We played festivals, pubs, saloons, private parties, farmer’s markets, a brewery, a winery and more racking up the most gigs we’ve played in a year so far. Our songs were played on many independent radio stations as well as online shows. The European folk portal “Folkworld” gave us very nice reviews (one in English, one auf Deutsch).

2013: We will be adding new tunes to our repertoire in preparation for our next album. A video is in the works. We plan on playing more fabulous shows far and wide. (To keep track of what we are up to sign up for our monthly email newsletter and/or check our calendar page.)

I know I say this every year but that’s because it is so true. We wouldn’t exist as a band without your coming to our live shows, listening to our music and sharing it with friends, supporting us by buying merch and telling others about us. You make it happen. Thank you!

Then it is off for a short set at 4:30pm with Dan Kahane at the Sebastopol Community center for a KOWS benefit and Birth 2012 event All ages. Tickets $10 in advance, $15 at the door.

Then we meet up with the crew at the Aqus Cafe for a night of holiday fun starting at 7:00pm.
