Dairy Queen’s Strawberry Mango Mochi Blizzard is a holdover from the World Cup blitz earlier this summer. Which is weird, because I don’t think the product is necessarily tied to any one nation state well known for soccer. Strawberry, mango — I mean, that could represent half of the qualifying teams this year.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about this particular Blizzard treat is how simplistic it is. It’s essentially just three ingredients in a paper cup — soft serve ice cream, strawberry chunks and mango-flavored mochi. That last one is the biggest difference maker, naturally. You have to wonder why and how DQ had no problems springing for actual chunks of strawberry but opted for an artificial take on the mango. Maybe you have to store them at different temperatures, and it’s too inconvenient?

Before I get into its taste, I have to get into its aesthetics. Simply put, it’s not the most attractive-looking delicacy on the Dairy Queen menu. There’s no genteel way to put it: the mochi bits look like chunks of corn. Even worse, the strawberries kind of “bleed” into the ice cream, turning the treat into this weird pinkish thing that shares an uncanny resemblance to that old movie monster, The Blob. Needless to say, going out for a cold cup of Blob with corn in it probably wasn’t the look DQ was aiming for here.

The Blizzard might be a little unsightly, but in terms of taste it’s perfectly adequate. The mochi actually turns out to be the right call after all; the consistent shape, tone, and mouthfeel gels very well with the ice cream and maintains a robust flavor, even when the dessert itself starts turning soupy. The strawberry flavor largely holds up, but it winds up being the Achilles heel of the product. It’s a bit too tart and adds this sometimes incongruent acidic kick to the ice cream — call me old-fashioned, but when I buy a Blizzard, I want a Blizzard and not some highfalutin’ sorbet like those Metric System-loving Europeans are always eating.

Beyond that mild complaint, though, I can’t find much fault with this one. It’s got a pretty unique taste, and it straddles the line between light and fluffy and ultra-filling fast food dessert shockingly well. Even when the August heat turned my Blizzard into a dairy-flavored mud puddle, it still tasted pretty good and never really lost its fruit-fusion flavor. It’s not something I’d want to try every week, but for a one-and-done late summer snack it’s solid stuff.

With pro football season right around the corner, I doubt these things will be on the DQ menu for much longer. It’s certainly worth a try, although it probably won’t become anybody’s Blizzard GOAT.

A wise man once said, “Sometimes when you expect the moon, you end up with someone showing their butt to you.” That’s somewhat how I felt trying these Oreo Mini Brownies.

Look, they’re fine. They’re an inexpensive chocolatey snack that might satisfy a sweet craving for 30 minutes or so, but there’s nothing that stands out about them or anything that encourages me to buy them again. That’s disappointing, because the name Oreo carries a lot of weight.

First off, they’re a bit too cakey. This might not bother those of you who like cakey brownies, but I’m a card-carrying member of the Eat All The Brownie Edges Club, so it’s disappointing that these brownies, which I assume are all edges because of their round shape, aren’t chewy.

Next, let’s talk about their Oreo-ness. While it looks like smooshed Oreo cookies were applied to the top, they don’t enhance the flavor of the base brownie at all. The Oreo creme just blends into the fudge brownie, and the cookie crumbles don’t add any crunch or that distinct darker chocolate flavor you’d expect from an actual Oreo cookie. While I said these are inexpensive, I can’t help but feel like I overpaid given the lack of Oreo-ness here. No-reo, if you will.

I hoped these would be a nice fusion of Oreo cookies and brownie — a BrOREOkie, if you will. Instead, I got a lot of brownie and not much else. To be fair, that’s not nearly as bad as someone surprising you by shoving their bare derriere in your face, but I would’ve liked these to differentiate themselves more from other convenience store brownies.

I’ve had a lot of Oreo-flavored snacks over the years, and these might be the most unsatisfying of the bunch.

Taco Bell could’ve done something amazing with its latest menu item — the Crispy Chicken Chipotle Bacon Melt Burrito. It could’ve turned it into a Chalupa.

Not a big deal, you say? Well, if it was a Chalupa, it could’ve been the Cheesy Crispy Chicken Chipotle Bacon Chalupa. That would’ve been cool, Taco Bell. I haven’t seen that many Cs together since I last looked at my college transcript.

The grilled burrito is stuffed with a crispy chicken strip, cheddar cheese, chipotle bacon, lettuce, and avocado ranch sauce. As you can see below, my order also came with tomatoes, which I did not order. BONUS lycopene!

If you’re like me, you might’ve assumed by reading its name that this had bacon plus Taco Bell’s oft-used chipotle sauce, but nope, it’s chipotle bacon, or as the ingredients list calls it, “chipotle brown sugar seasoned bacon.” Yes, it’s also supposed to be sweet, which means we could’ve had, say it with me now, the Cheesy Crispy Chicken Candied Chipotle Bacon Chalupa. A missed chance, Taco Bell.

With previous non-breakfast Taco Bell items that included bacon, I always felt the bacon’s flavor got lost in the sauces. But that’s not the case here. The smokiness and savoriness come through with every bite. Whether that’s from the generous amount of pork bits my order received or the flavor being accentuated by the chipotle’s smokiness, I couldn’t tell you. However, after tasting it, I can understand why Taco Bell didn’t promote the brown sugar because I didn’t get any flavor or sweetness from it. I kind of wish there was a bit of sweetness, but it’s not a dealbreaker. It’s just a little odd that brown sugar was used when it’s not noticeable.

The avocado ranch sauce added a bit of freshness and tang, and I could’ve sworn I tasted cilantro too. Maybe it was just my imagination, but if not, BONUS cilantro! Okay, not really a bonus if you’re one of those people who thinks it tastes like soap.

But I haven’t even gotten to the main protein yet — the crispy chicken strip. Thanks to the tortilla chip coating, every bite provides a pleasant crunch. The poultry inside is somewhat juicy and tender, and there’s a solid meaty flavor balance between the chicken and bacon. While there are some chicken bacon ranch vibes here, the chipotle and seasoned chicken does enough to differentiate the flavor. I very much enjoyed this, and I could see myself ordering it again.

If you’re heat-sensitive, you don’t have anything to worry about, since the burrito isn’t spicy. Though speaking of heat, if we add some to my desired C-heavy-named menu item, it could become, say it with me, the Cheesy Caliente Crispy Chicken Candied Chipotle Bacon Chalupa. Create it, Taco Bell!

Crush’s Back To The 90s Big Troppa Punch is a very weird attempt to recapture the magic of a bygone era. It’s not a long-discontinued flavor resurrected from the Big Soda intellectual property graveyard, but rather an all-new flavor meant to mimic the spirt and the times of the 1990s. And as an actual ‘90s child, I can tell you point blank … Crush actually got it pretty accurate.

I know packaging can only carry a product so far, but man, did the graphic designers behind Big Troppa Punch knock it out of the freaking ballpark. It looks amazingly, shockingly, genuinely, unrepentantly 1990s — if you would’ve told me this was a can from Bill Clinton’s first term of office, I would probably believe you. The iconography alone makes this product seductive, and if you grew up slurping down Capri Sun’s Pacific Coolers while watching reruns of Ren & Stimpy, you will absolutely ADORE this LTO beverage.

Aesthetically, the product calls to mind the idiosyncratically ‘90s Fruitopia vibe, but the resemblance to a certain, defunct Coca-Cola offshoot pseudo-juice soda hybrid doesn’t end there. As soon as I got a whiff of Big Troppa Punch, I felt like I was back in the middle school lunchroom, wearing a Korn T-shirt and really hating quadratic equations. I haven’t even thought about the name in years, but this thing might be a total homage to Strawberry Passion Awareness (SPA) Fruitopia. And yes, they DID actually call it that. Not only does Big Troppa Punch smell like SPA, it looks an awful lot like it, too, right down to the semi-cloudy, pink lemonade tone. Which begs the question: does it taste like SPA, too?

I’d love to give you an answer, but to be totally honest … I don’t think I can remember what Fruitopia tasted like. But I’m guessing it wouldn’t taste too different from Big Troppa Punch. The product, weirdly enough, doesn’t necessarily come out and tell you exactly what it’s supposed to taste like.

There are sketches of strawberries and pineapples on the packaging, but the drink itself is simply described as “fruit punch” flavored (which, to be fair, IS on point for ‘90s marketing). Maybe my taste buds were off, but I feel like the drink had a pink lemonade/strawberry hybrid flavor — regardless, it lacks a sharp citrus flavor and has more fizz than I expected. Maybe calling it “slightly ritzier Hawaiian Punch” is a putdown, but I actually like “slightly ritzier Hawaiian Punch,” y’all.

After the powerhouse that was Crush’s Back To The 80s Electric Blue Razz soda, maybe Big Troppa Punch is a mildly muted follow-up. But it’s still a loving ode to the era and pretty darn good after it has been chillin’ like a villain in the fridge for a while. If you remember scrambled cable television, landline phones, and affordable housing prices, I’m sure this soda will knock your socks off — here’s hoping they don’t land on top of the Sega Genesis or your brand new Orlando Magic Starter jacket, though.

A new Starbucks cold brew is here for summer: the Orange Cream Cold Brew. It has cold brew with vanilla syrup and an orange cream cold foam to top it off.

If you’ve read my Starbucks reviews, you know the cold brews usually get pretty high marks in my books. But… oh, Starbucks. This cold brew just isn’t cold brewing.

You can tell they were aiming for an orange creamsicle-inspired experience, but the orange flavor completely dominates the drink. Unfortunately, it comes across as artificial, which isn’t something I typically associate with Starbucks beverages. Instead of tasting bright and refreshing, the orange flavor felt fake and overpowering.

I kept waiting for the cold brew to balance things out. It never really happened. The orange bulldozed everything else in its path, to the point where I barely tasted the cold brew at all.

The pairing just doesn’t work. Rather than complementing the coffee, the orange flavor seemed to fight against it.

As the drink progressed, I found myself wincing a bit every time I took a sip because the orange flavor lingered so heavily. In fact, I kept reaching for my water bottle between sips just to reset my taste buds.

Overall, this feels like a case of Starbucks trying a little too hard. The orange creamsicle concept sounds fun on paper, but I think it missed the mark. I’m so curious what other people think about this!
