Unlike the people conducting these ridiculous studies, I have TAUGHT real, actual elementary students in real, actual classrooms. I know how much more difficult it is to find time, supplies, money, books, space, parents, etc. when there are, say, 34 students as opposed to 24. Many times, teachers simply cannot provide those extras (i.e. subscriptions to student news magazines or clipboards for science class) to larger classes, so the students go without. You don't need to be an educator or scientist to figure this out. As the kids say, "Duh!"

Check out this article In Defense of Homework over on Slate. The author seems to think that if she can manage to help her children with homework- everybody should be able to do it. She seems to think that if her school offers homework help- all schools do. Every district, school, after school program (when offered), teacher, family and student are different and face various challenges.
