Along with quite possibly having one of the coolest band names of ALL time, West Palm Beach weirdos Surfer Blood have the righteous jams to match their totally tubular moniker. These guys definitely seem to be fans of The Pixies and 90’s alternative rock, but their sound is also kissed with a noisy modern vibe that is fresh as a Whole Foods baguette. Jay Reatard (a.k.a. Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr.)  was the real deal from Memphis, Tennessee. Jay was a fan of rock n’ roll who played his music with a passion and a fury that is lacking in many of today’s performers. Jay’s untimely death proves that we should never fear putting all of our cards on the table and always do exactly what our hearts tell us. I am bummed that I won’t get to see Jay perform live again, but I like to think that he is somewhere in space starting a supergroup with Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, and Joey Ramone. Hector is currently freaking out on Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and this little jam called “Home“. Now these guys are doing the kind of Southern Cali indie-surf-folk shit that is reminiscent of Devendra Banhart and Dawes added with a musical timelessness that makes one ask, “mind if I do a J?” I am pretty sure these dudes will be in the “next-big-thing” category if homeboy doesn’t freak out and move into a cave someday soon. In the words of Klaus from The Life Aquatic, lead singer Alex Ebert has the “crazy eye!” Give this David Letterman performance a listen.
