After using mint.com for several months now I am thoroughly impressed. I figured it would be complicated to setup, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Virtually any account that you have a username and password to log into online is already setup in their system. You login to all of your accounts through their secure system, it downloads all available transaction data and gives you a detailed read out – automatically categorizing each transaction. Some transactions are occasionally mis-labeled, or you may want to label them differently; no problem, just a couple clicks and you can change the one transaction, or that transaction and every other one from the same store.

I currently have my Chase bank, Paypal, Upromise, US Bank, American Express, Capital One, Bank of America, Citibank, and Toyota Financial accounts all imported. It gives me a total of how much cash I have, how much credit card card debt, and how much loan debt. It’s really nice to have a quick snapshot that is updated daily. Highly recommended!

With any newspaper subscription, I do not suggest you sign up for their auto-bill/pay because I’ve heard from many people that they were often over-charged and/or their paper’s were not being delivered but they were still being charged.  It’s always best to be in control of paying a bill on your own, you’re in the driver seat that way.  We still use online bill pay through our bank account, that’s helpful so we don’t have to remember to pay it and we don’t have to get stamps, etc but at least we can stop the payments if an issue were to come up.  We’ve always had a 100% success rate with the companies above using this method of subscription.

We ran into CVS yesterday to get a couple of things ($4 Money Maker!) and found several different types of Triaminc on clearance.  If you use the $3/2 from this Sunday’s 7/25 SS you’d only pay $0.24 ea!  You can also take this $1.50/1 Triaminic Product printable coupon. Now clearance varies greatly from store to store but since the whole line was on clearance I’d bet you’ll find the too.  We also found several varieties of Nyquil on clearance for just over $1.50 too.

Now this is what I call a STOCK UP SALE a little on the sugary side though.  Without coupons you can get everything pictured above for $0.77 ea (after catalina) with coupons I was able to get everything for $0.27 ea on average!  I did buy a couple of things that I didn’t have a coupon for so that  I could get to the total # I needed.  We’ll be donating several items from our stock pile to our church’s food pantry as well.

6 of the boxes of cereal that I purchased had Movie Codes on them, and it only takes 6 codes to get a FREE movie ticket!  The retail value of everything pictured above was $126.40 after all my coupons and catalinas I paid $11.64 including the milk and bananas!  Also if you sign up as a member with Save Mart online and print your first shopping list you can get a $5/$50 Save Mart coupon – I wish I would have found mine today!  Instead I paid in separate transaction and rolled the $10 catalina to keep my OOP low.  What this means is that the $10 catalina I earned from one transaction I used it to pay for the next.

About 7 months ago our family took on our first Living off the Land Challenge – it might sound silly but our stockpile for that month was our “land” and we learned to make do with what we had on hand.  It turned out to be a very rewarding challenge.  It was eye opening to see how much we had in our stockpile and how easy it is to forget exactly what is at the bottom of the big white box deep freezer in the garage.  We had to get creative at times but during that month we also found some new favorite recipes just by using up random ingredients that had been long forgotten.

As couponers we stockpile so that we never have to pay full price again, which is great,  but if any of that food goes to waste we’re throwing our money out with the trash.  I’m sure you’ve said it before “If we had to, we could live off the food in our stockpile for XYZ days/weeks/months” so my challenge to you and to myself is to see if we can do just that – Live off the Land!  Along the way I’ll be sharing a few recipes and updates on how we’re doing.  We will purchase milk, fresh produce, and bread during the month and I’d allow the flexibility to purchase items that are completely FREE like the Kraft Cheese I found this week at Safeway.  I think it would be silly to pass that up!
