Tenney: A healthy workplace is everybody’s business

Blog originally published on Health Relay last week during National Public Health Week

Liliana Tenney is the co-director of Health Links Colorado at the Center for Worker Health and Environment at the Colorado School of Public Health.

With National Public Health Week upon us, promoting safety and health in the workplace is an essential ingredient toward improving the overall well-being of Coloradans.

The focus of this year’s National Public Health Week is “Public Health is ROI: Saves Lives, Saves Money.” On April 3, the theme of the day is “Creating A Healthy Workplace,” with an emphasis on how wellness and safety are good for health and business.

Numerous studies have made the case for keeping our workforce safe, healthy and productive. Throughout the country, companies face a rapidly aging workforce. Public health initiatives target epidemic levels of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions.

Today, more than ever, there is evidence that creating a healthy workplace can produce positive effects on employees’ health, medical costs and productivity. Simply put, prevention makes good business sense. Case in point: obesity among full-time employees costs businesses $73 billion a year. Research also shows that medical costs fall by about $3.27 for every dollar invested in a worksite wellness program. Yet despite such positive evidence, only 27 percent of small businesses participate in employer-sponsored wellness programs.

Pinwheel garden pops up for “Be the ONE” campaign

They’re popping up in front yards, at community events and in front of City Halls; and they’re spinning statewide as the country recognizes Child Abuse Prevention (CAP) Month throughout April. They’re pinwheels and the centerpiece of the Pinwheels for PreventionTM campaign. The pinwheel represents Colorado’s efforts to change the way our state thinks about prevention, focusing on community activities and public policies that prioritize prevention right from the start to make sure child abuse and neglect never occur.

In honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Colorado School of Public Health is partnering with Denver Human Services, Denver Court Appointed Special Advocates, Prevent Child Abuse Colorado and many more agencies by planting our very own pinwheel garden on the south-west lawn of Building 500 on the Anschutz Medical Campus.

“When I read that Denver Human Services was looking for organizations interested in planting a Pinwheel Garden for raising awareness during National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April, I thought it seemed like a natural opportunity for the Colorado School of Public Health to partner with other organizations to promote a message for greater Public Health in the Rocky Mountain Region,” states faculty organizer Amanda Allshouse. “When I mentioned Pinwheels to school’s Faculty Senate, they helped connect me with the Kempe Center.”

The Kempe Center is hosting several awareness activities and events including the April 3 Kid’s Health Policy lunch seminar “How can we as a community protect our children” and the annual blue ribbon campaign with Children’s Hospital Colorado.

The school’s pinwheel garden will be on display through mid-April. Stop by to view the garden and think about ways you can “Be the One” to make a difference for a child including:

1) Be a Bounce Back Family. Since challenging times impact every family, it’s important to recognize stressful situations and keep a sense of hope. These things can help us take constructive action to turn things around.

2) Make Parent Growth a Priority. Take time to learn what is age appropriate and how to set realistic expectations. These tools help us cope positively with various situations.

3) Learn More About Child Growth. Helping children develop emotionally helps them identify their feelings, clearly communicate and problem solve, and prepares them for positive social interaction.

4) Surround Yourself with a Network of Friends & Family. Having a strong support system of neighbors and community members helps us get needed breaks, cope with difficult times and prevents us from becoming isolated.

5) Call a Pro. Getting to know a day care professional, caseworker, teacher or doctor gives us an expert to turn to in times of need.

These five things help make families and our community stronger. To learn more about making a difference, visit www.denvergov.org/BeTheOne.

National Public Health Week is underway!

Join the Colorado School of Public Health for the 4th Annual Public Health Symposium at Colorado State University. The 2013 theme One Health will examine the national and global perspectives of the public health impacts of the human-animal-environment interface.

April 2, 2013 | 9 AM
Lory Student Center, Colorado State University

The concept of One Health advocates cooperation between human and veterinary medicine and wildlife ecology to combat human health risks and promote health of all species and the environment. The morning session will include a keynote address an d a panel of leading practitioners and researchers representing different perspectives on public health and public lands with input from a current public health student. The afternoon session will deal with the current understanding of disease vectors which have had a profound impact on human health. Changes in climate have been implicated in emerging risks from vector borne diseases. Future climate change is anticipated to impact the distribution of other vector borne diseases e.g., West Nile virus, malaria.

Story originally published by the CU Newsroom

Washington, D.C. is a very long way from the Santa Ana Pueblo in the Four Corners area of Colorado/New Mexico/Utah/Arizona. But not too far for Joaquin Gallegos, a CU Denver student, who grew up in the Southwest as a member of the the Jicarilla Apache Nation.

Earlier this month, Gallegos, a senior majoring in Public Health, and his mother traveled to the nation’s capitol where he was recognized as a Champion for Change by the Aspen Institute’s Center for Native American Youth. He joined four other young Native Americans also being honored.

“I am honored to be recognized by the Aspen Institute for my involvement in the important endeavors of the Centers for American Indians and Alaska Native Health,” Gallegos said. “For me this is not employment but rather a responsibility to serve my Native People.”

MPH student accepted to 2013 Clinton Global Initiative University

Congratulations to Master of Public Health, Health Systems, Management and Policy student Amuda Mishra. Mishra will represent the school at the 2013 Clinton Global Initiative University, in St. Louis, MO April 5-7.

Mishra was selected from among a competitive, national pool of student applicants. As part of the initiative, Mishra developed a project title “Ujyalo,” meaning “the light,” which will provide much needed electricity to the community of Birgunj, Nepal. There she will help install a solar-water light system, providing an efficient and environmentally friendly energy source.

“With the help of one natural solar-water-light ‘bottle bulb,’ we can create approximately 55 watts of light,” states Mishra. “This natural bulb is created by adding approximately 5-7ml of chlorine to 1L of water in a soda bottle. This will not only help light up homes that are dark during daylight and have no electricity, but will also help us recycle unwanted soda bottles from the community.” Her project is inspired from “A Liter of Light” organization that has installed similar lighting systems in countries like India, Bangladesh, Peru, Cambodia and Kenya.

The Clinton Global Initiative University is hosted annually in order to bring together students, youth organizations, experts and celebrities to discuss and develop innovative solutions to global challenges. The 2013 event will be hosted at Washington University in St. Louis.

Plan to improve the health of children in North Aurora

The Colorado School of Public Health, Center for Public Health Practice, Colorado Children’s Health Access Program, Aurora Health Access, and Children’s Hospital Colorado have partnered to organize stakeholders and service providers to develop, support, and implement a comprehensive plan to improve the health of children in North Aurora.

The initial phase in the planning process was a mixed-methods assessment, which included both qualitative and quantitative data, to measure the organizational capacities, health problems, risk factors, and perceptions about health care needs for children in North Aurora.

Data from the assessments were presented to stakeholders and community members during a public meeting on January 31st, 2013, where more than 75 attendees identified specific action steps to be further discussed develop an action plan

A link to the report is available through the Center for Public Health Practice website.
We are proud to share in the celebration and success of our alumni. If you are a graduate of the school or one of our predecessor programs, then we want to hear from you.

Westley Reed, ‘12

MPH Community and Behavioral Health alumna Westley Reed began working as a Pediatric Intervention Manager for Denver Health’s Managed Care Division in January 2013. She collaborates with various stakeholders involved in children’s health on interventions and initiatives that improve the health outcomes of Denver’s children, in addition to promoting health equity and the delivery of culturally competent care. The MPH program has enabled her to directly apply learned skills in her position, specifically in terms of program design, implementation, and evaluation.

Westley shares three tips for students seeking employment, “Utilize your network. It’s larger than you think; Have someone review your resume to ensure you are demonstrating your skills and experience in the clearest way possible; Do not be discouraged if it takes a long time to hear back from organizations about your application. The hiring process is long and can be frustrating, but being patient will help keep your stress under control.”

Albino honored as 2013 Distinguished Psychologist in Management Award

The Society of Psychologists in Management (SPIM) has awarded Colorado School of Public Health Associate Dean Judith Albino, PhD, the Distinguished Psychologist in Management Award for 2013. Albino received the award on February 22, during the SPIM midwinter conference in Scottsdale, AZ. In her invited address on this occasion, she spoke to the group on the topic of “Leadership Identity and Leadership Frames.”

“I am deeply honored by this award; there is nothing so gratifying as to have one’s work recognized by colleagues – particularly when the past recipients comprise such a distinguished group,” states Albino.

The Distinguished Psychologist in Management Award recognizes outstanding contributions to the practice of management by a psychologist. The award is presented to an individual who has developed, refined, and implemented practices, procedures, and methods that have a major impact on people in organizational settings and/or on the profession of management.

“Dr. Albino’s recognition speaks to her strong expertise in organizational and academic leadership,” states Colorado School of Public Health Dean David Goff, MD, PhD. “The school and university are fortunate to benefit from her insights and leadership.”

Albino, a health psychologist, is the school’s Associate Dean for Strategic Planning and Development and Clinical Professor of Community and Behavioral Health. She currently is principal investigator and directs the Center for Native Oral Health Research. She also directs the senior leadership training program (LITeS) for the Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute. Albino served as the interim dean for the Colorado School of Public Health from 2011-2012 and is President Emerita of the University of Colorado.

Albino is among a small handful of higher education leaders selected to receive the award, which more often has been presented to psychologist/leaders from the corporate sector. Past recipients from higher education have included John Conger, PhD, former chancellor of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center; Richard Atkinson, PhD, former president of the University of California; and Frances Horowitz, PhD, former president of Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

Newman named to Best Doctors List for occupational medicine

Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health Lee Newman, MD was named by Best Doctors, Inc. to be among the top five percent of doctors in the U.S. A Denver subset of the list was published February 22 as a supplement to the Denver Business Journal. Newman was listed as top doctor in the field of occupational medicine, along with Denver colleagues, Karen Mulloy, Karin Pacheco, Cecile Rose, and David Albert Schwartz.

ASPH/CDC Public Health Fellowship Program now accepting applications

The Association of Schools of Public Health is pleased to offer recent graduates from ASPH-member, Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)-accredited Schools of Public Health an exciting opportunity to gain practical public health experience at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Applications are currently being accepted for the 2013 ASPH/CDC Public Health Fellowship Program; the deadline to apply is April 11.

The ASPH/CDC Public Health Fellowship Program offers outstanding opportunities for early-career public health professionals by enabling them to train at CDC on a variety of high-priority public health issues. ASPH/CDC Public Health Fellows work closely with nationally recognized experts within the nation’s premier health promotion, prevention, and preparedness agency and global leader in public health.

Community partnerships promote policy and environmental changes

Policy and structural changes to the environment can promote an active and healthy lifestyle. Yet changes require collaboration among diverse sectors, including planners, developers, media specialists, neighborhood residents, elected officials.

Colorado School of Public Health researchers working with the Physical Activity Policy Research Network, sought to know if theses collaborations could be effective in achieving their goals of creating healthier, more active communities and individuals.

Fifty-nine collaborative groups from 22 states participated in the study. Most groups comprised diverse stakeholders who focused activities on specific strategy areas: parks and recreation, safe routes to schools, children’s play areas, public plazas, streetscaping, street improvements, and infill and redevelopment. Predominately groups focused on parks and recreation and safe routes to schools.

According to research published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Preventing Chronic Disease, more than half of the groups reported their initiatives as either in progress or completed. Areas in which collaboratives experienced the greatest success included public plazas, street improvements, streetscaping and parks and recreation. However, opportunities for improvements in transit, infill and redevelopment remain. Groups reporting more progress in environmental and policy change more frequently engaged in political and policy processes. They also reported using social marketing and social media to support their work.

New program to curb opioid prescription drug overdose

A new training program to help stem the epidemic of opioid prescription-related overdoses and unintentional deaths has won the endorsement of the Colorado Medical Society and COPIC, a medical malpractice provider.

The program, offered by the Colorado School of Public Health, is an online course that gives Colorado health care providers guidelines on managing patients with chronic, non-cancer related pain.

“The goal of this private-public initiative is to help improve practice, address the epidemic of opioid prescription-associated health problems and improve care,” said Alfred Gilchrist, CEO of the Colorado Medical Society.

The Opioid Crisis: Guidelines and Tools for Improving Chronic Pain Management is the first course of its kind in Colorado to offer online training and tools which target the opioid abuse epidemic. The course was developed by the school’s Center for Worker Health and Environment in partnership with chronic pain experts and members of Colorado’s insurance community.

Along with its online training, the course website provides clinician-oriented resources, including links to the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP), tools for assessing patients’ level of functioning, surveys to assess the risk for potential addiction, and calculators for estimating the dose of opioids being taken by patients, among others.

COPIC announced that it is awarding COPIC points, which result in discounts on medical malpractice premiums, for clinicians who complete the training.

At the same time, Pinnacol Assurance, a major provider of workers’ compensation insurance in Colorado, announced the course as a requirement for all SelectNet members; the company’s network of clinicians who provide care for injured workers.

Crane appointed Associate Dean for Academic Affairs

Colorado School of Public Health professor and department chair Lori A. Crane, PhD, MPH is soon to become the school’s new Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Crane will assume an acting role immediately with a permanent appointment effective March 1, 2013.

Crane, currently the Chair of the Department of Community and Behavioral Health, was appointed by the school’s dean David C. Goff, Jr. MD, PhD following an internal search to fill the role previously held by Professor of Biostatistics Jack Barnette, PhD.

“Lori has a long and distinguished career of service to the school and public health education and research,” states Goff. “I am extremely confident in her ability to apply that experience to advance the academic mission and programs of our growing school.”

Crane will assume the associate dean position during a period of rapid growth within the school. Since opening in 2008, the school has increased enrollment to over 500 students and added new programs and areas of study. The school is currently making plans for added enrollment and curriculum expansion, areas which will be overseen by Crane in her Associate Dean capacity.

“I believe that the Colorado School of Public Health has the potential to become one of the best schools of public health in the world,” states Crane. “And I’m excited for the chance to be part of the team that leads us there.”

Lack of Access: One student’s experience in the Negev Desert
Originally published by the Center for Global Health newsletter Global Health Links

2011 MPH alumnus Devin Patchell is taking the next global step in his public health career. Upon completing the master of public health program, Devin sought to continue working and learning about public health in a global setting.

While applying for admission to medical schools, he felt that the Medical School for International Health (MSIH) at the Ben Gurion University in Israel would position him for a future career in global health.

The MSIH program integrates public and global health concepts throughout the curriculum, and offers numerous opportunities for community involvement in Be’er Sheva.

“Be’er Sheva is a true melting pot,” explains Patchell. “Here, I have an opportunity to practice working in health care across many different cultures: Ethiopian immigrants, Bedouins, Orthodox families, etc. “

Though Israel has a very comprehensive healthcare system, many families out of the Be’er Sheva city limits are restricted in the care they receive because of cultural and social barriers. The Bedouin populations live largely without electricity and basic hygiene becomes an issue.”

Challenges involving access to healthcare, dissemination of information about available resources, and basic needs such as electricity and potable water remain serious issues for the families of the Negev desert.

With support from his Rotary International Student Scholarship funds, Patchell is working on grassroots approaches to improving healthcare, one family at a time. For his project, Devin took his inspiration from the Gandhian Model of Care, a public health program that originated in India. The program offers a sustainable method of educating and facilitating preventive care among impoverished communities.
