Without giving anything away, FORGOTTEN ISLAND follows young characters (Jo & Raisa) who find themselves caught up in an adventure involving a mysterious island, unusual creatures and Filipino mythology. There is much more going on than they probably expected, and the story takes them places they only dreamed of.

The movie is directed by Joel Crawford and Januel P. Mercado and features the voices of H.E.R., Liza Soberano, Dave Franco, Jenny Slate, Manny Jacinto, Dolly de Leon, Jo Koy, Ronny Chieng and Lea Salonga.

Filipino culture was carefully woven throughout the story. I loved the mythology and folklore woven into the story, especially knowing it gives a new generation a chance to discover these traditions and the stories behind them. I always enjoy seeing different cultures represented in family entertainment, especially when it gives kids an opportunity to learn about stories and traditions they may not have encountered before. The animation is absolutely beautiful. The mix of animation styles works well, and there is always something fun to look at. The movie is bright, colorful and full of life.

More Than Just a Fun Adventure

There is more to FORGOTTEN ISLAND than the adventure and humor. I found myself thinking about the importance of memories and the people we choose to keep in our lives. Friendship, trust and loyalty all play a big part in the story, and I liked that those ideas were there without taking away from the fun.

The idea of chosen family also stood out. Sometimes family isn’t just about who you’re related to. They are the people we trust and choose to keep in our lives. FORGOTTEN ISLAND shows this in a very relatable. The characters are young, and a lot of what they are dealing with reflects things young people experience. Friendships change, people grow and figuring out who you can trust isn’t always easy.

My Grandson’s First Movie

This was probably the most memorable part of the whole experience for me. I was so excited to take my grandson to his first movie. I wasn’t sure how a 3-year-old was going to handle sitting through an entire movie, especially since FORGOTTEN ISLAND does have a few intense moments. There were a couple of times when he climbed right up into my lap, covering his eyes only once.

There are intense scenes in this movie, but they aren’t inappropriate or overly scary. They are intense enough that a little one might want to sit a little closer to you, but they didn’t feel like too much. Once those moments passed, he was right back into the movie. And he absolutely loved it. When the movie was over, he gave it two thumbs up.

I think there is something here for both kids and adults. My grandson was completely into the colors, characters and funny moments, while I found myself paying more attention to the friendships and the story. There is a lot packed into this movie, but these are the five things that stood out to me most.

5 Reasons to See FORGOTTEN ISLAND

1.  It’s colorful. The animation immediately catches your attention. There is so much color and detail, and the island is filled with unusual characters and creatures.
2.  It feels new. With so many sequels and remakes, it was nice to watch a movie where I didn’t already know the characters or exactly where the story was going.
3. The characters are fun. There is a lot of personality here, and the characters are what kept me interested in the story.
4. It has something to say. The movie touches on memories, friendship, trust, loyalty and chosen family without losing the humor and adventure.
5. It’s a movie you can enjoy together.

Should You See FORGOTTEN ISLAND?

Yes.

I really enjoyed watching FORGOTTEN ISLAND. I loved the colors, the characters and the humor, but I also appreciated that there was a meaningful story underneath all of it. I especially enjoyed the Filipino culture and mythology and the way the movie brings those stories to a new audience.

And honestly, getting to experience my grandson’s very first movie with him made the whole event even better. My grandson gave FORGOTTEN ISLAND two thumbs up, and I have to agree with him. I would watch this movie again, and I’m so glad this ended up being his first movie. FORGOTTEN ISLAND is in theaters September 25, 2026.

Following her passing on Aug. 25, the special will be a joyful, emotional celebration of the artist, songwriter, entertainer, humanitarian and entrepreneur whose music and generosity carried her from the mountains of east Tennessee into the hearts of generations around the world, told through performances, archival footage and personal stories that trace her extraordinary journey to becoming one of the most beloved entertainers and philanthropists in American history.

Robert Deaton serves as the project’s executive producer. The special reflects a strategic partnership between CMA and Belmont University, where it will be filmed live at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts.

“Dolly Parton belonged to the whole world, but she was born of this industry, and this industry owes her a debt of gratitude that words alone cannot repay,” says Sarah Trahern, CMA CEO. “As the organization built to serve and celebrate country music, honoring her legacy is not just an opportunity; it is our responsibility. This special is our way of saying thank you, on behalf of every artist, industry member and fan who found a piece of themselves in her music.”

“Dolly gave country music its heart, and giving some of that heart back to her is an incredible honor,” says Deaton. “My hope is simply that we do right by her story, her music and the people who love her, so that this evening feels like the tribute my friend deserves.”

The tribute continues a growing relationship between Belmont University and Parton that included the 2025 world premiere of “DOLLY: A True Original Musical” at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts and the launch of DOLLY U, an immersive educational partnership designed to connect students with hands-on opportunities in entertainment, media and creative industries. Through that collaboration, students worked alongside professional artists, producers and industry leaders while helping bring Parton’s vision to life.

“Dolly Parton’s impact extends far beyond music. She represents creativity, generosity, entrepreneurial spirit and a commitment to lifting others up, qualities that have inspired generations and resonate deeply with Belmont’s mission,” says Dr. Greg Jones, president of Belmont University. “It was an honor for Belmont to partner with Dolly through the launch of DOLLY U and the world premiere of her musical at the Fisher Center. The Country Music Association has announced legendary country music duo Brooks & Dunn as the 2026 CMA Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award recipients. Brooks & Dunn will accept the honor as part of a special tribute during “The 60th Annual CMA Awards.” “The 60th Annual CMA Awards” airs live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena Wednesday, Nov. 18, on ABC and Disney+, next day on Hulu.

“Few artists have left a mark on country music quite like Brooks & Dunn,” says Sarah Trahern, CMA chief executive officer. “As the most awarded duo in our genre’s history, Kix and Ronnie have spent more than three decades shaping the sound of country music. Their music has set a standard that still resonates with new generations of artists, while continuing to win over new generations of fans. We are proud to celebrate everything they’ve given to this genre and the mark they continue to leave on its future.”

Since first taking the stage together in 1990, Brooks & Dunn have established themselves as one of the most influential and celebrated duos in country music history. With 20 No. 1 hits, more than 60 charted singles, over 40 Top 10 hits and more than 30 million albums sold worldwide, the duo has spent more than three decades defining the sound of modern country music. Grammy and Academy Award® winning supernova H.E.R. and Liza Soberano (Lisa Frankenstein, Alone/Together) star as high school graduates Jo and Raissa, who have been best friends since grade school but are now about to embark on separate life paths.

While celebrating their last night together, Jo and Raissa stumble upon a mysterious portal that transports them to the fantastical island of Nakali, packed with magical and mythological creatures they grew up hearing stories about from their Filipino families.

Some of these figures will become friends, some foes. Joined by well-meaning-but- hapless weredog Raww (Dave Franco) and a small-but-mighty pack of pals, Jo and Raissa must face The Dreaded Manananggal (Tony winning icon Lea Salonga), the most feared creature on the island. When they discover that the memories of their entire friendship are the price for returning home, Jo and Raissa will race to find a way to leave the island before they forget each other forever.

The film’s all-star voice cast also includes Emmy nominee Jenny Slate (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Dying for Sex), Manny Jacinto (The Good Place, Top Gun: Maverick), BAFTA nominee Dolly de Leon (Triangle of Sadness, Ghostlight), global comedy superstar Jo Koy (Haunted Mansion, Jo Koy: Live from Brooklyn) and Emmy winner Ronny Chieng (The Daily Show, M3GAN).

Tyler Cameron built his career at the intersection of real estate, construction and media. JENNA DEWAN

Jenna Dewan currently stars alongside Nathan Fillion in ABC’s hit series “The Rookie” in the role of Lt. Bailey Nune, a capable and resilient firefighter and paramedic. EZRA FRECH

Ezra Frech is a two-time Paralympic gold medalist, advocate, model and motivational speaker. Hailing from Los Angeles, Frech competes in the T63 100 meter, long jump and high jump. At the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, he won gold medals in both the 100 meter and high jump and placed fifth in the long jump.
