Album of the Month – Dorian Concept – When Planets Explode [Kindred Spirits]

Fusing together the fashionable ends of the hyperkrunk scene with sublime jazz synth work and micro-editing capabilities, Dorian Concept’s debut LP is a complex beast. The record plays more as a collection of tracks tan as a whole, but as the title suggests, each number is its own organic explosion, refusing to be tied down by quantized programming or any individual prevailing characteristic or sound. The contrast in styles on the album is staggering, with the monumental synth swagger of the ‘Fucking Formula’ and ‘You Tiresome Thing’ jostling with the abstract torrents of numbers like ‘Mesh Beam Splitter’, which burrows into your brain like a colony of funked up termites.
It’ll have you bopping your head while it blows your mind, these are the compiled snaphots of the many faces of Oliver Johnson, one of electronic music’s freshest talents.

Album of the Month – Atom™ – Liedgut [Raster-Noton]

The hugely prolific Uwe Schmidt has been refreshing his craft in electronic sound for over two decades. From industrial techno and acid through to his Latin inflected work as Señor Coconut, his works have always erred on the side of playful. Whilst Liedgut takes the AtomTM project in a neo-classical direction, this fun remains essential to his work. Out of gentle white noise clouds, Schmidt arranges his 8-bit orchestra through lilting Waltzs and flurried Scherzos. There are Arias here too, only the voices here rasp out in gutteral and Germanic robot tones. The overall effect is rich, fantastical, and some times so beautiful it plays like the soundtrack to an unwritten fairy tale. In space.

Featured Album: Ø – Oleva [Sähkö]

It isn’t clear how we’re supposed to pronounce the name of Mika Vainio’s latest project; a quirk that seems at odds to the effect of the music itself which, despite being mostly spatial techno and post-industrial ambience, is crafted together with textures tangible and definite. Dank memories of sound are used to hollow out a cavern into which bass hits collapse. Great volumes for mesmerising throbs and drone are marked out by streaks of metallic snaps. Oleva is 12 tracks of intuitive dark, static music, in which Vainio’s most impressive trick is to make the listener feel like they’re providing a dynamic counter-point to it, just by listening.

On the back of the divine sonicscapes found on this week's featured album, Ø's Oleva, the latter half of the show is a bundle of beatless music after some utterly brutal beats from the likes of Joker and Si Begg. Prepare for an uninterrupted closing half hour that will envelope you in some gorgeous ambient, drone and other rhythmically ambiguous music.

It isn't clear how we're supposed to pronounce the name of Mika Vainio's latest project; a quirk that seems at odds to the effect of the music itself which, despite being mostly spatial techno and post-industrial ambience, is crafted together with textures tangible and definite. Dank memories of sound are used to hollow out a cavern into which bass hits collapse. Great volumes for mesmerising throbs and drone are marked out by streaks of metallic snaps. Oleva is 12 tracks of intuitive dark, static music, in which Vainio's most impressive trick is to make the listener feel like they're providing a dynamic counter-point to it, just by listening.</itunes:summary><itunes:duration>54:53</itunes:duration><itunes:explicit>No</itunes:explicit>
<itunes:keywords>experimental,IDM,mix,DJ,music,electronic</itunes:keywords>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://www.robotronicradio.com/media/the_depot_006.mp3</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

Featured Album: Gas – Nah Und Fern [Kompakt]

Nah Und Fern, an anthology of Wolfgang Voigt’s Gas project, brings some of the most influential recordings of electronic music out of the mitts of hoarding collectors and into a much more accessible domain. From the 1996’s self-titled debut to 2000’s Pop, the package is all 4 full length releases, missing only the Modern E.P. and a couple of other lost recordings from the discography.
Gas is Voigt, co-founder of the Kompakt label and microhouse pioneer, at his most reflective, taking inspiration from the Black Forest and looping crackly orchestral snippets into oblivion. Each sample used is a seed that branches and firs. Where the kick drum is introduced, it is only to gently pad you deeper into the dense, expansive drone. Occasional field recordings and instrumentation seep into focus out of the murk, only to disperse out of recognition. The music is vital and intuitive, comfortable in blind ambiguity and astonishingly beautiful.

Featured Album:Four Tet – Ringer EP

Keiran Hebden’s first solo material for just under 2 years finds him stripping away the dense production veils he was prone to weaving, revealing a much more defined and focussed piece that just sounds like someone rediscovering the fun in making music. Cutting jazz elements out of his recent ventures with Steve Reid and exploring his techno influences with a minimal setup, the result is an effortlessly musical collection of movements that will move you.

Keiran Hebden's first solo material for just under 2 years finds him stripping away the dense production veils he was prone to weaving, revealing a much more defined and focussed piece that just sounds like someone rediscovering the fun in making music. Cutting jazz elements out of his recent ventures with Steve Reid and exploring his techno influences with a minimal setup, the result is an effortlessly musical collection of movements that will move you.</itunes:summary><itunes:duration>58:02</itunes:duration>
<itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:keywords>experimental,IDM,mix,DJ,music,electronic</itunes:keywords>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://www.robotronicradio.com/media/the_depot_002.mp3</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

Antye Greie’s 4th solo LP is a collection of exercises in explotation of the voice, splintering syllables across delicate arrangements to produce her most coherent work to date. The attention to detail is what makes it feel so organic and dense beneath the characteristically Berlin soundscapes and her lilting words, cut into a thousands piece. You’ll be picking up on new mouth and respiratory samples with each listen, like throaty croaks filtered into percussive creaks on Kreuzwortraetsel and masked panting on Presswehen.
