Sometimes homeschooling can be financially tough. Some families have given up two incomes in order to homeschool their children. Wouldn’t it be nice to earn a little extra income to either put away for a rainy day or buy that expensive curriculum you’ve wanted?

Maybe your kids are getting older and you want to teach them how to earn some extra income before they go to college. Perhaps, you notice an entrepenurial spirit in your children and want to encourage them to pursue their ideas.

There are a number of online jobs that homeschooling parents and students can do that will help them either earn extra income or begin to earn money for college.

Here are 5 jobs homeschoolers can do at home to earn extra money.

1. Virtual Assistant – Assist clients with administrative, technical, or creative tasks. Clients are usually small business owners that are looking for someone to complete the type of tasks an administrative assistant in a company would normally perform such as bookkeeping, online research, manage email, social media tasks, website maintenance, or audio and video production.

2. Copywriting – Writes text for webpages, advertisements, email, or social media. Copywriters may be provided with an outline for writing or may just be presented with an idea and will need to research a topic and write about it. If the copy work is for social media, email, or advertisements there will often be information provided about the subject to assist with creating the text.

3. Teach classes or tutoring – If you’re an expert in a certain topic, you can use that expertise to teach online classes. This could be done by simply creating private posts on a blog an providing a password to parents and students who pay to get access or by using online seminar software like GoTo Meeting.

4. Develop and Sell Curriculum – At some point you’ve probably created some kind of worksheet, printable, lapbook, or other resource for your own homeschooling or for use in a co-op. You can sell those to other homeschoolers that are looking for simple, inexpensive resources to teach a subject.

5. Affiliate Marketing – Refer others to products and services that you use and earn a commission from the sales. This may sound simple but it can be the most difficult in the entire list. A simple way is to link to products on Amazon that you have purchased. You’ll want to look for products as services that other homeschoolers will find useful and share how you have found them to be helpful as well.

Do you earn extra income online? Have you thought about teaching your teenage kids some ways they can earn money online?

<itunes:summary>Sometimes homeschooling can be financially tough. Some families have given up two incomes in order to homeschool their children. Wouldn't it be nice to earn a little extra income to either put away for a rainy day or buy that expensive curriculum you've wanted?

Maybe your kids are getting older and you want to teach them how to earn some extra income before they go to college. Perhaps, you notice an entrepenurial spirit in your children and want to encourage them to pursue their ideas.

There are a number of online jobs that homeschooling parents and students can do that will help them either earn extra income or begin to earn money for college.

Here are 5 jobs homeschoolers can do at home to earn extra money.

1. Virtual Assistant - Assist clients with administrative, technical, or creative tasks. Clients are usually small business owners that are looking for someone to complete the type of tasks an administrative assistant in a company would normally perform such as bookkeeping, online research, manage email, social media tasks, website maintenance, or audio and video production.

2. Copywriting - Writes text for webpages, advertisements, email, or social media. Copywriters may be provided with an outline for writing or may just be presented with an idea and will need to research a topic and write about it. If the copy work is for social media, email, or advertisements there will often be information provided about the subject to assist with creating the text.

3. Teach classes or tutoring - If you're an expert in a certain topic, you can use that expertise to teach online classes. This could be done by simply creating private posts on a blog an providing a password to parents and students who pay to get access or by using online seminar software like GoTo Meeting.

4. Develop and Sell Curriculum - At some point you've probably created some kind of worksheet, printable, lapbook, or other resource for your own homeschooling or for use in a co-op. You can sell those to other homeschoolers that are looking for simple, inexpensive resources to teach a subject.

5. Affiliate Marketing - Refer others to products and services that you use and earn a commission from the sales. This may sound simple but it can be the most difficult in the entire list. A simple way is to link to products on Amazon that you have purchased. You'll want to look for products as services that other homeschoolers will find useful and share how you have found them to be helpful as well.

Do you earn extra income online? Have you thought about teaching your teenage kids some ways they can earn money online?

Digital technology is a great enabler for home educators. It allows parents to find information, enhance their lesson plans, supplement their curriculum, and so much more. Sometimes technology can be a stumbling block and be more of a hindrance than a help. Let’s take a look at the 3 ways technology hinders homeschooling.

1. It can be a distraction

This is the biggest hinderance to homeschooling. With the rise of social media our phones, tablets, and computers can be a huge distraction. You’ve also probably ended up looking at silly animal videos 2 hours after you went on YouTube to look up a science experiment. Maybe you’ve also been infatuated with getting 3 stars on that one level of Angry Birds. Yes, technology can be a huge distraction.

Our kids are distracted by technology too. In fact, the lure of technology is stronger on them than it is on us. Society is moving towards being constantly connected. Facebook’s recent announcement of Home (a homescreen replacement app for Android phones) puts the social media giant front and center on their (or your) smartphone.

So how can we reduce the distractions of technology in our homeschool?

Limit access to tablets, smartphones, and computers. If the next 2-3 hours are to be used for schooling and none of these things are needed, put them out of sight.

Configure devices like iPods and tablets so that notifications are turned off. If you use these devices for homeschooling (and many do) turn off notifications

Keep the tech out of the bedroom. If your kids go to bed with a smartphone or tablet in hand they’ll stay up late which will lead to less sleep and the temptation to check up on their friends throughout the next day.

2. It can be a crutch.

Technology is a great enabler. It allows us as home educators to access information and curriculum quickly and easily. The rise of educational apps for tablets and smartphones allows us to supplement our curriculum with fun games that also teach our kids (sometime overtly and other time subversively).

However, technology can also be a crutch that we lean on in a time of weakness. Rather than using it as a tool or an educational aide we use it as a babysitter or distraction so that we can do what we want to do. I guilty of this myself. Sometimes if I want to get some writing or reading done, I’ll let the kids watch a show on Netflix. “It’s educational,” I say to myself and then proceed to get lost in what I want to do while the kids go nuts.

So how do we as parents not fall into the trap of using technology as a crutch?

Plan how you will use your technology. If you have a plan you’re less likely to fall into the trap of defaulting to tech.

Set time limits. If you set time limits and adhere to them yourself you’re forced to find something else to do when you run out of ideas.

Have a purpose for each device. Sure, it’s fun to play games on an iPad or smartphone but also have a specific educational purpose designated for each device.

3. It can be expensive.

Yes, technology can be expensive. It doesn’t have to be expensive. Parents sometimes feel like they need to be “fair” with all of their kids and so if they’re going to buy an iPad for one they need to buy one for all of their kids. Baloney!

One device can be shared among siblings. Again, scheduling the use of technology in your homeschooling helps with the “me first” attitudes that tend to crop up among siblings.

Perhaps you feel like every other homeschooling family around you has a laptop or tablet for each of their kids and so you need to keep up too. Don’t fall into that trap! Buy what you can afford. If you’re on a tight budget a MY|eebo or Kindle Fire HD tablet will meet all of your homeschooling needs. You may not have the same selection of apps but these inexpensive devices should easily meet your needs.

Just because the Jones’ support their local Apple store doesn’t mean you have to break the bank to keep up!

Do you struggle with these technology hinderances? Perhaps you you have some other ideas. Please comment below and share your thoughts.

<itunes:summary>Digital technology is a great enabler for home educators. It allows parents to find information, enhance their lesson plans, supplement their curriculum, and so much more. Sometimes technology can be a stumbling block and be more of a hindrance than a help. Let's take a look at the 3 ways technology hinders homeschooling.

1. It can be a distraction

This is the biggest hinderance to homeschooling. With the rise of social media our phones, tablets, and computers can be a huge distraction. You've also probably ended up looking at silly animal videos 2 hours after you went on YouTube to look up a science experiment. Maybe you've also been infatuated with getting 3 stars on that one level of Angry Birds. Yes, technology can be a huge distraction.

Our kids are distracted by technology too. In fact, the lure of technology is stronger on them than it is on us. Society is moving towards being constantly connected. Facebook's recent announcement of Home (a homescreen replacement app for Android phones) puts the social media giant front and center on their (or your) smartphone.

If your kids go to bed with a smartphone or tablet in hand they'll stay up late which will lead to less sleep and the temptation to check up on their friends throughout the next day.

Sometimes if I want to get some writing or reading done, I'll let the kids watch a show on Netflix. "It's educational," I say to myself and then proceed to get lost in what I want to do while the kids go nuts.

So how do we as parents not fall into the trap of using technology as a crutch?

Plan how you will use your technology. If you have a plan you're less likely to fall into the trap of defaulting to tech.
Set time limits. If you set time limits and adhere to them yourself you're forced to find something else to do when you run out of ideas.
Have a purpose for each device. Sure, it's fun to play games on an iPad or smartphone but also have a specific educational purpose designated for each device.

3. It can be expensive.

Yes, technology can be expensive. It doesn't have to be expensive. Parents sometimes feel like they need to be "fair" with all of their kids and so if they're going to buy an iPad for one they need to buy one for all of their kids. Baloney!

One device can be shared among siblings. Again, scheduling the use of technology in your homeschooling helps with the "me first" attitudes that tend to crop up among siblings.

Perhaps you feel like every other homeschooling family around you has a laptop or tablet for each of their kids and so you need to keep up too. Don't fall into that trap! Buy what you can afford. If you're on a tight budget a MY|eebo or Kindle Fire HDÂ tablet will meet all of your homeschooling needs. You may not have the same selection of apps but these inexpensive devices should easily meet your needs.

Just because the Jones' support their local Apple store doesn't mean you have to break the bank to keep up!

A few months ago I sold my Kindle Fire in order to buy an iPad. Originally, I intended to buy a refurbished iPad 3 ($379) because it was cheaper than a new iPad 2 ($399) and still came with the same warranty as a brand new iPad. The Apple store online was out of the refurbished iPad 3 so I headed down to the local Apple Store on my lunch break to have a look at the Mini, not intending to buy it at all.

When I picked up the Apple Mini I knew immediately that this was the tablet for me. Compared to the full-sized iPads in the store, the iPad Mini feels like a feather in your hands.

Three Reasons I Bought the iPad Mini

1. Compatibility with existing apps I’d reviewed or purchased for my iPhone. I already had some money invested in apps that I’d purchased for my iPhone. I was reluctant double my spending in order to purchase apps for the Kindle too.

2. It’s the right size for kids to use. One of my biggest concerns about the iPad has always been its size and weight. Kids don’t always have a firm grip on things and I was afraid my younger kids would drop the larger iPad. The iPad Mini is slightly larger than the Kindle Fire but still weighs less making it a good device for younger kids to use.

3. Fits my budget better than the larger devices. Although I still paid a premium for an Apple device, the iPad Mini fits my budget much better than the other iPad models. It’s $70 less than the iPad 2 and has better features.

Although I sold my Kindle Fire, I still recommend it over the iPad for families on a budget who want a tablet that they can use in their homeschool. The price is right and the FreeTime feature makes it much easier to manage what apps your kids ca access, how much time they spend using the Kindle, and you can easily block Internet access.

If your computer use is limited to email, browsing the Internet, and a few applications that require little keyboard input then you’ve probably thought long and hard about buying a tablet. Which one is right for you?

Today I’ll take a look at the 4 major 10-inch (or so) tablets available and compare them to one another. Hopefully this will give you some guidance when making your decision.

Nexus 10

With its 10.4″, 2560×1600, 300ppi display, the Nexus 10 has the best display among the group. But what does that mean? Well, unless there are apps that take advantage of the display, not much. Although the Android OS on the Nexus 10 is much more refined than older tablets, it still lags behind Apple’s iOS because there really isn’t an end-to-end solution for purchasing apps, books, and movies. It’s priced similar to the iPad 2 at $399 for a 16GB model and is currently only available online.

iPad (4th Generation)

The new, new iPad is a few steps up the evolutionary ladder from the 3rd generation iPad but doesn’t really offer much in the way of must-have changes over its predecessor. Apple dominates the tablet space for a reason. They’ve built a great product and tied in an eco-system of apps, books, and movies for your consuming pleasure. The price however, keeps it out of many people’s hands. At $499 for a 16GB model, many homeschoolers have to think long and hard before deciding to buy one. A refurbished 3rd-gen iPad is only $50 more than the iPad mini and costs less than a new iPad 2. Skip the 4th-gen and go with the one that’s only 7 months old.

Windows Surface RT

If you’re looking for a tablet that sometimes behaves like a laptop then the Microsoft Surface RT is what you need. Running the newly minted Windows 8, Microsoft’s answer to the iPad may actually gain some considerable market share. It’s price the same ($499) and will run any Windows app designed for use with the new tiled interface. There are only about 10,000 available apps right now but many of the “essentials” are present in the Microsoft store. It cannot run traditional Windows applications but comes with a free copy of Office Home & Student 2013. Not a bad deal for $500.

Kindle Fire HD 8.9

Although it’s not really a 10-inch tablet I should mention the Kindle Fire HD. Amazon has the best chance of challenging Apple’s grip on apps, books, and movies. Just like the iPad, the Kindle Fire HD is really a gateway to a giant, electronic mall. Priced aggressively at $299 for a 16GB device, the Kindle Fire HD is the best deal of the bunch. The OS isn’t the greatest but if you’re looking for a bargain, the Kindle Fire is the way to go. It gets an honorable mention because it really fits in-between the 7- and 10-inch tablets. It want to play with the big boys but can quite keep up.

My Recommendation

Priced to move, a refurbished 3rd-generation iPad is the way to go right now. $379 for a device that’s only 7 months old and still comes with the same 1-year warranty from Apple gets you the same quality and peace of mind knowing you’re buying a device that will still be serviceable 2-3 years from now.

<itunes:summary>If your computer use is limited to email, browsing the Internet, and a few applications that require little keyboard input then you've probably thought long and hard about buying a tablet. Which one is right for you?

Today I'll take a look at the 4 major 10-inch (or so) tablets available and compare them to one another. Hopefully this will give you some guidance when making your decision. Â
Nexus 10
With its 10.4", 2560x1600, 300ppi display, the Nexus 10 has the best display among the group. But what does that mean? Well, unless there are apps that take advantage of the display, not much. Although the Android OS on the Nexus 10 is much more refined than older tablets, it still lags behind Apple's iOS because there really isn't an end-to-end solution for purchasing apps, books, and movies. It's priced similar to the iPad 2 at $399 for a 16GB model and is currently only available online.
iPad (4th Generation)
The new, new iPad is a few steps up the evolutionary ladder from the 3rd generation iPad but doesn't really offer much in the way of must-have changes over its predecessor. Apple dominates the tablet space for a reason. They've built a great product and tied in an eco-system of apps, books, and movies for your consuming pleasure. The price however, keeps it out of many people's hands. At $499 for a 16GB model, many homeschoolers have to think long and hard before deciding to buy one. A refurbished 3rd-gen iPad is only $50 more than the iPad mini and costs less than a new iPad 2. Skip the 4th-gen and go with the one that's only 7 months old.
Windows Surface RT
If you're looking for a tablet that sometimes behaves like a laptop then the Microsoft Surface RT is what you need. Running the newly minted Windows 8, Microsoft's answer to the iPad may actually gain some considerable market share. It's price the same ($499) and will run any Windows app designed for use with the new tiled interface. There are only about 10,000 available apps right now but many of the "essentials" are present in the Microsoft store. It cannot run traditional Windows applications but comes with a free copy of Office Home & Student 2013. Not a bad deal for $500.
Kindle Fire HD 8.9
Although it's not really a 10-inch tablet I should mention the Kindle Fire HD. Amazon has the best chance of challenging Apple's grip on apps, books, and movies. Just like the iPad, the Kindle Fire HD is really a gateway to a giant, electronic mall. Priced aggressively at $299 for a 16GB device, the Kindle Fire HD is the best deal of the bunch. It want to play with the big boys but can quite keep up.
My Recommendation
Priced to move, a refurbished 3rd-generation iPad is the way to go right now. Â $379 for a device that's only 7 months old and still comes with the same 1-year warranty from Apple gets you the same quality and peace of mind knowing you're buying a device that will still be serviceable 2-3 years from now.

Let’s take a look at the major players in the tablet market and breakdown the competition. This week’s podcast compares the iPad Mini, Kindle Fire HD, Nook HD, and Nexus 7 tablets.

iPad Mini

Of all the tablets in this review, the iPad Mini has the best end-to-end product. Apple does a great job of creating an eco-system that keeps you coming back for more. Apple’s iTunes store (why do they still call it iTunes?) has the most to offer of all the tablet makers. If you already own an iPod or iPhone your apps will work on the iPad Mini. The biggest detriment is the price. $329 for a smaller iPad 2 seems like quite a premium but if you’re gung-ho about Apple products you’ll want to stick with the iPad Mini.

Kindle Fire HD

Amazon’s offering in the tablet market is clearly priced to move. It competes well against the iPad Mini and Nexus 7 and is quickly becoming my preferred tablet. My 1st-generation Kindle Fire is getting more and more use every day and despite the sometimes clunky operating system it’s growing on me. The Amazon Marketplace tied in with an Amazon Prime account make this a great choice and at $199 the price blows the doors off the iPad mini. As Amazon continues to develop their end-to-end product line, look for more people to start jumping from Apple to Amazon.

Nook HD

Off all the 7-inch tablets out there, this is the most disappointing. There are very few apps available compared to the 3 other devices and for $199 you only get 8GB or RAM, hardly enough space to store movies for a long trip or vacation. However, the Nook HD does come with a micro SD slot for up to 32GB of additional storage. This, unfortunately, is its only shining point. The Nook HD is primarily a reading device and if you want a tablet for reading, go with a Kindle Paperwhite.

Nexus 7

Google’s tablet is a middle-of-the-road tablet that has great potential. Although it has more apps available than the Kindle Fire HD the books and videos selection isn’t as robust. The OS rivals iOS6 and from my brief encounter with one seems fast and easy to use. The one thing it lacks, however, is a complete end-to-end solution. If you have an Android phone your apps will run on the tablet but may not be optimized. In addition, you only get 8GB of storage for your $199 which you can double for an additional $50.

Say Cheese

Before I make my recommendation you may be thinking, what about cameras? Honestly, I think the camera is one of the least-used features of any tablet. Taking pictures with a tablet isn’t easy and personally, I’ve never thought about taking a picture with my 1st-generation Kindle Fire. I’m happy to use my iPhone or Nikon for that.

My Recommendation

If you want a great price and a great selection of apps and media, the Kindle Fire HD is the hands-down winner. If you are an Amazon Prime subscriber this makes more sense than any of the other devices because you get a lot of content to go along with your subscription.

The iPad Mini comes in at a close second place. The price prevents me from committing to this tablet. Were this a mini version of the 3rd-generation I’d say it would be a steal. Even a $299 price tag would convince me to recommend the iPad Mini over the Kindle Fire HD but personally I feel the price is too high for people who haven’t committed to Apple’s products.

What do you think? Do you own any of these tablets? Have you already ordered your iPad Mini? I love to hear what you have to say.

Homeschool Daddy, a.k.a. Jason Bean, is a dad of two kids, Ethan and Abby and they are exploring their 3rd year of homeschooling. Jason works on supporting their family’s homeschool efforts by focusing on math and science and generally providing his suggestions in numerous other places, even without being asked. As he approaches being on this earth for four decades, he continually struggles to keep things balanced with family, church and running his own business providing web, social media and technology consulting support for clients (and numerous friends and family members).

After a two and one-half hour drive to Shelburne, VT I arrived at the Maker Faire ready to be inspired. I thought for sure that the rain would keep away the crowds but it was packed! People were milling around checking out the booths. In many places people were shoulder-to-shoulder checking out demonstrations from makers all over Vermont.

Some of the more popular attractions that afternoon were the rocket launches and pumpkin/watermelon chuckin’. Watching controlled explosions and fruit fly 500′ into Lake Champlain caused quite a commotion.

Not to be outdone, many makers dealt with crowds around their tables all day. The lock-picking table, robot teams, and more spent as much time down crowd management as demonstrating their skills.
