El revolú que sigue causando el documental De Panzazo! ha permitido que el tema de la educación se inserte en la campaña electoral mexicana, sobre todo por el evidente poder que esgrime la cabeza del sindicato de educadores, la maestra Elba Esther Gordillo y las evidentes carencias del sistema educativo. La maestra / jefa del sindicato ha tratado de bloquear primero y luego neutralizar la difusión del documental porque la coloca al centro de la problemática educativa mexicana. Gordillo es parte, inmensa, del problema.

Aunque México dedica a la educación un presupuesto alto, que lo posiciona entre los líderes de su categoría, el 93% del presupuesto se va solo en salarios y Gordillo hace y deshace sin rendirle cuentas a nadie!. Con tantos millones danzando el sindicato de educadores se ha transformado en una especie de cartel, parece. Todos defienden a la maestra.

Es evidente que el 7% restante, para atender las necesidades de los alumnos y las escuelas, es inaceptable y grosero. De allí, la realidad y la necesidad de cambiarla. La gran pregunta hoy es: Se saldrá Gordillo con la suya, otra vez?.

MAYORIA APOYA LEGALIZACION DE LA MARIHUANA

Confirmando la tendencia de los últimos años, el 56% del país apoya la legalización de la marihuana según la última encuesta conducida por Rasmussen Reports. Más aún, esta mayoría considera que se le debe regular de la misma manera que se regula el tabaco y el alcohol y que no debería considerarse un crímen usarla. Solo un 36% se opone a esta medida.
De otro estudio se desprende que la mayoría de adultos consideran el alcohol y el tabaco más peligrosos que la marihuana.
Hace unas semanas reportaban (NY1) que cada preso le costaba al estado de Nueva York unos $60,000 anuales!. La pregunta necesaria es: Cuantos de estos individuos han sido privados de su libertad por poseer el equivalente a $5 ó $50 en marihuana?.... Si a esto le sumamos las repetidas denuncias contra la policia de Nueva York por constantes abusos de ciudadanos requisados, buscando cualquier pretexto para cumplir con los numeritos de arrestos exigidos por el departamento, en que quedamos? Es inaceptable!.
Queremos legalización ahora!. Ya basta de tanta información falsa y de una guerra que malgasta capital financiero y humano sin precedentes y sin razón.

PIER 54 AND THE TITANIC DISASTER

One hundred years ago many people took the Titanic to come to NYC. Instead, many of the survivors made it to the Big Apple on board the RMS Carpathia. The Carpathia arrived at Pier 54.

Today, Pier 54 is used for music, movies and events of all kinds. This season is also a secure place to learn how to bike!.

The pier is next for renovation as part of the Hudson River Park renewal project.

ART STROLL ALONG THE HIGHLINE NYC

By far one of the most visited places in New York and one of my favorites, the Highline Park offers a magnificent way of enjoying the city: great views, beautiful nature and great art. It is like stepping into the NEW New York.

These pictures were taken in the last week or so. The top picture shows the latest mural by french artist JR, for instance. The pieces of art shown here will be on display for at least the rest of the season.

And is not only sculpture, but cinema (above, Warhol's) and family events that makes this park a versatile space to explore. From it you can expand into the Chelsea Art District and get more inspired!.

NY ESSENTIALS: ARTE > MAYO 15-31

Durante la pasada semana he podido andárme de galerías y me he encontrado con nuevas exhibiciones tanto de artistas latinos como de reconocidos artistas internacionales que les recomiendo no se pierdan. La fascinante obra del vanguardista brasileño Hélio Oiticica los espera en la Galería Lelong con su serie Penetrables; La Gagosian presenta tanto al argentino-italiano Lucio Fontana como también a Pablo Picaso en la cuarta de una serie de muestras que la galería ha conducido en los últimos tiempos sobre la obra del artista español. El genio de Brancusi como fotógrafo los espera en la Galería Bruce Silverstein y la segunda instalación de For Rent nos trae a Marc Latamie a la galería de The Americas Society. El artista mexicano Carlos Estrada-Vega exhibe su exquisita obra dedicada a Africa en la Margaret Thatcher y la artista española María José Algora está mostrando su obra reciente en CATM Chelsea. Por su parte el Instituto Cervantes le rinde homenaje a Tápies con una muestra de los artistas Amadeo Peñalver & Karim Márquez. Si se pasean por la Park Avenue no dejen de buscar las esculturas del venezolano Rafaél Barrios.

De las muestras no latinas les recomiendo sobremanera que visiten las nuevas esculturas de Anish Kapoor en la Gladstone Gallery y la sentida obra de Craig Norton en Jim Kempner Fine Art que nos lleva a la reflexión sobre los horrores de las guerras recientes y el Post Traumatic Stress Disorder que afecta a tantos veteranos. Disfruten también de las fotografías de una de las pioneras del arte, Evelyn Hofer en Danziger Gallery y no se olviden de pasar por Leila Heller Gallery para ver Mud Pie, la obra de Rachel Lee Hovnanian. Y pasen por el Café!. Si no han visto la muestra de Cindy Sherman en el MoMA, pásense por la galería Metro Pictures y la disfrutarán en un espacio más íntimo. Por último, OPEN YOUR EYES, la obra del artista Roy Nachum les espera en Joseph Nahmad Contemporary.
La muestra de Keith Haring sigue en el Brooklyn Museum, asi como La Bienal del Whitney, Cindy Sherman en el MoMA y Gran Caribe en el Museo del Barrio. Y hay más!

One of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, Oiticica investigated color in space in a cohesive, continuous oeuvre, until his untimely death in 1980. He began with the Grupo Frente, Sêco, and Metaesquema drawings and then liberated his painting into space with series entitled Bilateral, Relevos Espaciais, Bólide, Núcleo, Penetrável, and Parangolé. Not only are the Penetrables a natural progression in his own work, but also within the continuum of the art historical canon. Oiticica avowed, “It is not a matter of copying Mondrian, but of blazing the trail for a painting of pure color, space, time and structure.”
For the first time in New York, three of the late Brazilian avant-garde artist Hélio Oiticica’s rarely-seen multi-sensorial installations of color: Penetrável PN1 (1960); Penetrável Filtro (1972); and Penetrável PN28 “Nas Quebradas” (1979) will be on view at Galerie Lelong. Oiticica’s invention of the Penetrável (Penetrable) series brought a new dimension to his work, allowing him to create built environments and develop outdoor installations such as the well-known Magic Square series. The Penetrables are considered among the first artistic installations, and have not been credited enough for their contribution to early conceptual art.

Fontana's fascination for the advancements of science and technology during the twentieth century led him to approach art as a series of investigations into a wide variety of mediums and methods. As a sculptor, he experimented with stone, metals, ceramics, and neon; as a painter he attempted to transcend the confines of the two-dimensional plane. In a series of manifestos, beginning with the Manifesto blanco (White Manifesto) of 1946, Fontana announced his goals for a "spatialist" art, one that could engage technology to achieve an expression of the fourth dimension in a radical new aesthetic idiom that melded the categories of architecture, sculpture, and painting.
Six of his groundbreaking environments, known as Ambienti Spaziali, have been faithfully reconstructed, providing a completely new perspective for the rich and varied retrospective of more than one hundred major works that surrounds them.

This is the fourth major exhibition in an ongoing series on the life and work of Pablo Picasso, following the critical and popular success of “Picasso: Mosqueteros” (2009), “Picasso: The Mediterranean Years” (2010), and “Picasso and Marie-Thérèse: L’amour fou” (2011). The exhibition includes many important loans from museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Israel Museum, as well as from private lenders.

This exhibition is a departure from its precedents in that it has been conceived as a visual and conceptual dialogue between the art of Picasso and the art of Françoise Gilot, his young muse and lover during the period 1943–53. The result of an active collaboration between Gilot and Picasso’s biographer John Richardson, assisted by Gagosian director Valentina Castellani, “Picasso and Françoise Gilot” celebrates the full breadth and energy of Picasso’s innovations during these post-war years, as well as presenting Gilot’s paintings alongside his marvellously innovative depictions of her and their family life. It is the first time that their work has been exhibited together—that the painterly dialogue between the fascinated mature male artist and the self-possessed young female artist can be retraced and explored.

Featuring over 40 original prints, each made by Brancusi himself, this exhibition reveals Brancusi’s visionary dedication to the photographic medium as means of personal expression—an art form that the artist explored parallel to his sculpture. The photographs are integral to understanding Brancusi as an artist as they indicate that he was not only fully aware of photography’s power to guide, control, and enhance the viewer’s experience of his three-dimensional works, but also to completely transform them into new works of art. By physically placing and positioning his sculptures in his studio, Brancusi creates complex compositions that often incorporate radical lighting; his photographs express a unique pictorial vision that moves decisively beyond mere documentation and firmly establishes Brancusi as one of the most remarkably innovative image-makers in the history of the medium.

The second installment in the For Rent series featuring artist Marc Latamie (b.1952). Devoted to mid-career artists from the Caribbean and Canada, For Rent is based on the concept of transferring the use and symbolic value of Americas Society’s art gallery to the artist for the development of an in-situ installation.
In his first solo exhibition in the United States, Marc Latamie reflects on the colonial trade and cultural exchange between Martinique and France. The artist explores the history of the Caribbean through absinthe, a spirit that embodied the zeitgeist of French modern art from Henri Toulouse-Lautrec to Paul Cézanne and Pablo Picasso. For more than a century the spirit was a symbol of Parisian bohemia representing abandonment and decadence. First introduced in the late eighteenth century in Switzerland, absinthe later found great popularity in France and across Europe. It was believed to carry powerful addictive properties that effected one’s perception and behavior. France introduced Martinique to absinthe, an alcohol the island continued to produce despite France’s prohibition by 1915. As a result, Latamie grew up with absinthe regularly brewed in homes throughout Martinique, and recalls that as a child he would sniff the absinthe perfume kept in his grandmother’s cabinet.

For Carlos Estrada-Vega the process of cutting, sanding, drilling, magnetizing and coating thousands upon thousands of tiny wooden cubes with a combination of pigment, wax and limestone dust is only an act of preparation: an exercise to aid him in developing the discipline and focus required for his work. The actual act of painting begins as he combines those blocks into a grand composition through a practice of meditation and observation. Though each tiny component is considered a complete painting—a complete experience in and of itself—combined they inform one another, showing a trend of experiences whose diversity deepens and enriches the impact of the whole. Working against the urge to calculate and control the direction of the painting, the artist seeks to channel impulses and instinctual gestures that arise as he works, creating pieces that are as fresh as they are deeply honest.
The exhibition Building a Painting, which features several large-scale works the artist created for his solo exhibition Africa at the Museo Casa Chihuahua in Chihuahua, Mexico, is not merely a new body of work, but the marker of a new era of work for the artist. The shift into making larger paintings with dramatically smaller elements begins an evolution that emphasizes the artist's metaphysical intentions—the attention, the discipline, the engaged meditation—as expressed by the physical effort applied in creating the paintings. The series presented in Building a Painting is a meditation on the African continent as the cradle of humanity, and the transitions, struggles and metamorphosis it is currently undergoing as it builds and rebuilds itself. The work's graphic, bold colors are at once effusive in their vibrancy and loaded in their significance, eliciting an emotional response without ever being overt. The artist explains that the work is "an ode to the beauty of the land that saw us emerge and molded us for a couple million years before she finished forming us into what we are today. That is why I wanted to celebrate Africa as our Mother.”

Everyone sequesters their demons to their remotest landscapes, but in Algora's world she is in constant struggle to not only keep them at bay but to overcome every waking moment. Her work is her testament to her success.
Grappling with the darkness that life has dealt her she sees her salvation in survival. The inextinguishable need and drive to bring her struggles to light is tantamount to her efforts to help others less fortunate. Providing a window of hope, Algora magistrates between celebratory life and it's obligatory opposition. While the struggle is continuous, so is the stigma of the darkness, branded over the illumines, not to be forgotten.

This is the second exhibition for Susan Gamble and Michael Wenyon: A Universe held up for Inspection. The show will feature holograms made at an historic observatory, as well as digital prints taken in India and Cuba during the past four years.

Wenyon & Gamble, the collaborative team who have worked together since 1983, first became known for exploring holography – a medium considered new in the 1980s, but one that now seems to belong to an older, optical era of image making. In A Universe held up for Inspection, the artists place a world constructed by science under a cultural examination of their own, where the ironies of what is progress and what is obsolete are conjured for scrutiny.

Artist Is Schuster returns to her digital roots in her current exhibit, Manifestations, on display at One Art Space in Tribeca from May 11th through June 2nd. Each colorful canvas features vibrant, complex and glowing elaborations of ancient symbols, calling forth living energies and invoking powerful manifestations of humanity’s deepest hopes and dreams. Ms. Schuster invites the viewer to use her work as interactive tools, unleashing the innate power of each symbol in order to develop the specific attributes and characteristics necessary to achieve one’s goals and fulfill one’s destiny.
A member of MIT’s pioneering Architecture Machine Group in the 1970’s, Is Schuster was the first artist to exhibit digital art in New York City. Her prize-winning works have been displayed throughout the United States, Europe and the Middle East in such places as the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the International Center of Photography in New York City, the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Dubai, and the Detroit Institute of Art in Michigan.

Tamargo. Champagne Pool Under Black Light

Amadeo Peñalver (Spain) and Karim Márquez (Venezuela) are two artists based in New York. Both will pay tribute with their paintings to Tápies, the Spanish master of artistic informalism, within the program Hispa-York, a series of conversations with Latinamerican creators.
Amadeo's latest paintings have been created through performance, capturing the energy of the here and now. Márquez's paintings are based on the concept of chaos as a balance for material transformation. The evolution of his work is related to abstract expressionism.

Villalba’s beautifully haunting and evocative paintings –on steel and canvas– depict idealized, yet foreboding landscapes that encompass a range of ambiguities. In keeping with investigations of place and space in his earlier work, Villalba again uses references to examine the roles of context and familiarity. In these recent works, Villalba begins to incorporate imagery of interior and built spaces that he describes as“moments when the paint rests, and one may find comfort.
Technically, Villalba combines an expressionist approach to mark-making and a meticulous layering process to achieve a balance of the painted and unpainted surface. The result are works that navigate between form and subject, and at once seem familiar and foreign.

MUNTADAS: ELEVEN presents eleven works created in varying periods and under varying circumstances. This exhibition marks the first time these works have been seen in New York, beginning with the earliest, Diálogo, produced in 1980 in Madrid; to the series Sentences, begun in 1999; to Look/See/Perceive of 2009; to recent work like The Ordeal of Picasso's Heirs and Carteras sin ministro, both from 2012. Although Muntadas is well known for constructing critiques of what he calls the "media landscape" in large and complex projects, each of these eleven works embody a particularly direct and personal engagement with issues of perception, interpretation, and representation.

Mónica Sarmiento Castillo's distinctive chromatic and constructivist structuring works are shown in prestigious exhibitions around the world. The focal point of her work is the exploration of nature in painting, sculpture, collage, drawing, and glass as viewed through the pre-Columbian Civilizations. Forests weave together the essence of creation and form the basis of her inspiration, reflecting an arboreal theme.

The exhibition delves into the transitions of place, subject matter, and technique during his 20-year photographic career. Rocco’s uses his unique documentary style to takes us on a jaunt through his childhood neighborhood of South Philadelphia, the gritty North Philadelphia barrio where he has worked his entire adult life as a public school teacher, and his ongoing investigations of his mother’s native Colombia. TRANSICIONES also shows Rocco’s technical progression as we see his experimentations with color and digital photography that compliment his foundation in traditional black and white.

I Thought of That, 2012

In this body of work, Vega utilizes large-scale lead plates, stamps, oil paint and collage to depict scenes that embody his personal ideas of optimism.
Vega's new series references traditional latticed screens found in his native Melilla, a Spanish city located in North Africa. These architectural elements, made from ornamental patterns, function as windows in homes and convents. They keep the interiors private while allowing occupants vistas of the public outdoors. Vega transforms large scale malleable lead plates through engraving and deep cuts, producing geometric designs that play with ideas of seeing and being seen. In the haunting I Thought of That, Vega removes large sections of lead, revealing a vivid red field below.

Soledad Arias’ text-based work explores the slippage of meanings in the aesthetic and literary reading of texts. The title of the exhibition, ON AIR, refers to live broadcasting relating to the dialog initiated by Arias’ work while also relating to the breath of air necessary for speech. The work explores the materiality of text as well as its poetic, visual and phonetic meanings within the context of dialogue and colloquial communication.

This exhibition features works that explore the vast diversity and complexity of the Caribbean basin, as an accompaniment to El Museo’s upcoming exhibition, Caribbean: Crossroads of the World, presented in collaboration with Studio Museum in Harlem and Queens Museum of Art.

The fundamental motivation of this project is to raise the idea of “city” as an artiﬁcial paradise. Without creating any judgment, it is a reﬂection of the reality of the spaces in which citizens live together in large cities. The sequence of photographs becomes a performance of a neutral, faceless, synthesized character. This character roams on a structure; also neutral, geometric, organized, created by humans. The performance then becomes “sense” with “the world of ideas and culture” inherited from the history of mankind. A representation of individual and space dismantled, without any armor or appearance that could dress and shape. Just being present in the same space, raw and synthesized, interacting with both neutralized individual and space. No frills or learned presentations of any kind.

Spanning both gallery spaces (w24th St and w21 St), this two-part exhibition demonstrates Kapoor’s ongoing exploration of the formal and conceptual framework that has informed his artistic practice for over three decades. In these new sculptural works, Kapoor brings together two major facets of his approach to the three-dimensional form, reflecting both the highly engineered and more organic processes within his oeuvre. At once austere and intimate, messy and refined, Kapoor’s work dually confronts and expands the basic nature of materiality and form.

Our 24th Street location features a multi-part installation comprised of twenty-two freestanding concrete sculptures. Formed by densely textured layers of poured concrete and mounted on metal palettes, these heaping sculptures evoke the sensorial nature of materiality and mass. Intentionally employing materials that could not hold their initial shape, Kapoor let the pieces unravel to create new organic forms that hover between contemporary object and ancient entity. These works linger in a state between coalescence and collapse, a relationship that speaks to Kapoor’s ongoing interest in the idea of “objectness” and the incomplete nature of the sculptural form.

This most recent tableaux evolved from conversations Norton had with a family friend, a veteran who returned after three tours of duty with a purple heart and severe brain injuries. As a result of these injuries, the veteran felt lost, isolated, and unable to connect with those around him, symptoms commonly associated with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Using powerfully gestural and evocative collage techniques, Norton draws attention to PTSD as a pressing national crisis.
Tim Came Home from the War and Isn’t Timmy Anymore, is a confrontational narrative about the horrors of war and the struggles endured by soldiers upon return from battle. This narrative was created using Norton’s signature technique: a combination of expressive, photo-realistically drawn faces and hands with swaths and swirls of wallpaper collage. Three-dimensional wooden structures - walls, doors, caskets – are incorporated into the tableaux, adding a new sense of psychological and physical depth

A highlight from the show, Take A Spin, the Game of Going Off to War, uses dark humor to illustrate the mental and physical unpredictability every soldier faces. Similar to a game, viewers are invited to “spin the wheel” to see the various options: lose an arm, leg or genitals; come home unhurt, unchanged, the same as when you left; accidentally kill a non-combatant; die; suffer PTSD; spin again.

Evelyn Hofer was born in Marburg, Germany in 1922 and died in 2009 in Mexico City. In the years in between, Hofer created a body of work that both looked back to the tradition of August Sander and anticipated the color work of William Eggleston, causing her to be called "the most famous unknown photographer in America" by New York Times art critic Hilton Kramer – a devout supporter of her work.
Hofer's studies covered everything from photographic technique to art theory. She didn't just learn composition and the underlying theories of aesthetics, she also learned the chemistry involved in producing prints. Beginning in the early 1960s she became one of the first fine art photographers to adopt the use of color film and the complicated dye transfer printing process as a regular practice. Throughout her long career, Hofer continued to shoot in both color and black and white – determining which was the more apt for the picture at hand. Hofer's goal was to go beyond documentary photography to create a subjective interpretation of the world, conveying both the spirit of the time and a timeless message. A street photographer of a different stripe, Hofer's street pictures convey the artist's concern with sociological connections and offer a pointed look at society and its conditions. Her trades-people and toffs, her families and social groups are more than just intimate portraits – they epitomize the possibilities and restrictions of the human condition.

Mud Pie will include large-scale installations, sculpture, mixed media paintings, and photography that explore the blurring of reality and the narcissistic side of digital life. This powerful narrative begins with a photograph, Texas Mud Pie, Hands and Feet (Self-Portrait), 2012, and finishes informed by the unfiltered world of digital technology with the sculptural work Gates of Narcissus Metal Panels, Motherboards, 2012.
The viewer is invited into the artist's dream/awake state as she identifies commonplace sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and views of her early childhood in Texas. Hovnanian asks us to imagine a young girl making mud pies in the backyard swallowed up in the world of make believe. Hovnanian recalls the smell of pie in her mother's kitchen, which triggers a powerful memory – but is it apple or mud? And her memory of a profusion of fresh flowers – real or is this more cultural taxidermy?
In the interactive installation/ performance piece, Cafe, 2012, Hovnanian presents a small neighborhood cafe in Texas. Or is it? There is what seems to be an authentic cafe aroma, but the fare is decidedly untraditional. The milky white liquid posing as coffee smells and tastes real, but it is actually a chemical substance created in a lab- a deep rich flavor with a longer shelf life. BBQ, lemonade, and pie grace the menu, however “Food Bytes” or synthetically modified food are served in the cafe. Look out the window: there is a view of a barn – a 12-minute, video projection on a loop entitled, Outside Nacogdoches. @CafeWaitress (the waitress) oozes southern charm and sugars up every sentence; another ersatz reality, she's an actress from New York City with a Twitter account. When @CafeWaitress is asked about the menu she politely refers you to Siri on her iPhone and reminds you to follow her on Twitter.

Roy Nachum's elegant visual tropes eloquently reveal the conundrums of vision, narrative and poetics. While it is common for art to result in quite different experience from view to viewer, Nachum's work is extraordinarily variable in how it is experienced as well as how it is understood. It is an exhibition that will literally and figuratively Open Your Eyes.

La mítica Sara Montiel nos estuvo visitando para celebrar los 55 años del estreno de El último cuplé, la película que la lanzó al estrellato internacional, le abrió las puertas de Latam, Hollywood y el corazon de millones de Latinos del mundo.
Sara Montiel es la actríz más exitosa de España y la única que conquistó la escena mundial y Holywood hace ya más de 50 años. Tuvimos que esperar a Antonio Banderas y a Penéope Cruz para que un artista latino se posicionase en la cima del cine. Sara Montiel es pues, una pionera.
La imágen de Sara está grabada en los recuerdos de muchos de nosotros que crecimos viéndola en la pantalla chica y en la pantalla grande. La genialidad, belleza, talento y garbo de La Manchega plasmó recuerdos indelebles. Aún puedo ver esa cara, esa figura moza y esa voz cantando canciones que muchos cantamos sin parar y que marcaron de alguna manera nuestras vidas.
Con la frase "Ochenta y cuatro años os contemplan!" Sara Montiel
nos conversó por un par de horas en el Instituto Cervantes en donde nos hizo reír, recordar y conocerla un poco más. Nos deleitó con anécdotas, historias y recuerdos de una era de oro en el cine y la música en español: Habló de María Felix, Buñuel, Hollywood, experiencias de discriminación en NYC (con Billy Holiday en un restaurante y en una tienda lujosa de la 5ta Ave.) y de muchas experiencias a través de los años.
En este video sóle les muestro las preguntas que le hice directamente: La primera fue: Cuando piensas en tu vida, en tus recuerdos, que te trae una sonrisa al rostro, que te hace feliz? Sara me responde a nivel personal y profesional. Después le pido, le pedimos que cante y nos canta un poco de La Violetera, a capella!. Para terminar le pido que le envíe un mensaje a Latinoamérica, región muy cercana a su corazón, y que nos hable de sus planes.
A sus 84 años - con 70 de ellos actuando - Sara Montiel sigue llena de gracia, buen humor y feliz de su vida.

El nacimiento de Occupy Wall Street en Nueva York marca el inicio de la globalización del movimiento con un nuevo lema: Somos el 99%. Hoy estamos de nuevo en las calles.... debemos mantener la iniciativa y mantener el movimiento en el centro de la conversación nacional y global.

Obama vió la luz o terminó de 'evolucionar', como él mismo lo ha dicho, y anunció su apoyo al matrimonio gay. EL MATRIMONIO GAY DEBERIA SER LEGAL, afirmó, convirtiéndose asi en el primer presidente en asumir esta posición que ya muchos venían venir aunque parece que nos agarró a todos por sorpresa. El apoyo dado por Biden unos días antes se me hace que fue planeado. Con un timing perfecto dado el apoyo expresado reiteradas veces por la mayoría del país y con lo obsesionados que están los republicanos centrándolo todo en la economía con miras a la campaña presidencial. Asi que no han dicho mucho.

With more than 80 composed songs, This young singer-songwriter not only traverses a whole range of Colombian cumbias and bambucos, Argentine zambas, chilean cuecas, Bolivian carnavalitos and Peruvian festejos but she also writes the kind of melodies and refrains that translates across any language barrier.

On her sixth production "El corazón y el sombrero" (The heart and the hat) (2011 Aluna Records), she pays a tribute to Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, adding Latin American folkloric rhythms to 12 of his poems.

Radio Jarocho plays son jarocho music fashioned after the towns, musicians, and swampy countryside that created it in Veracruz, Mexico. They also write their own songs inspired by this popular genre and tailor them with assorted influences, creating a contemporary repertoire that captures the spirit of the traditional style. The band championed son jarocho by performing over the past decade in dozens of concerts and fandangos in several cities, including New York, Washington DC, and Boston.

With a name that refers partly to the Indian gugu Sai Baba and partly to The Jetsons (Los Supersónicos in Spanish), indie rock collective Babasónicos first emerged in the wave of new Argentine rock bands of the late '80s and early '90s, along with groups like Peligrosos Gorriones and Los Brujos. The outfit quickly became one of the banner groups of the country's sonic underground movement in the late '90s. Lead singer Adrián "Dárgelos" Rodríguez and keyboardist Diego "Uma-T" Tuñón initially decided to create a New Wave style, which didn't fall in line with the established traditions of Argentine rock music. The group's second album Trance Zomba (1994) incorporated a guest DJ, and the ensuing years saw the band experiment with various diverse styles.

Since the release of Jessico in 2001, however, Babasónicos's releases have fallen more in tune with current trends in Argentine music, allowing the band to reach a wider audience with releases like Infame (2003) and Anoche (2005). The band also composed the soundtrack for Vera Fogwill's 2007 movie Las Mantenidas Sin Sueños (Kept and Dreamless). The group's 2008 album Mucho was widely hailed by critics – AllMusic declared the release "easily one of the best rock en español releases of 2008." The disc was a rock masterpiece in miniature, its 10 tracks clocking in at just under 31 minutes in total length. With its latest release A Propósito (2011), Babasónicos continues to produce to some of the most creative and engaging Latin pop music around.

Por su parte, El Museo de Arte de Queens presenta Frank Oscar Larson, una muestra cautivante de fotografías de la Nueva York de los años 50. In December 1931, two years after its founding, The Museum of Modern Art inaugurated a major exhibition of work by the Mexican artist Diego Rivera. Only the second retrospective presented at the young Museum, the show was wildly popular, breaking attendance records in its five-week run. Rivera’s international celebrity was based on his fame as a muralist, but murals—by definition made and fixed on site—were impossible to transport. To solve this problem, MoMA brought the artist to New York from Mexico six weeks before the opening and provided him with makeshift studio space in an empty gallery. Working around the clock with three assistants, Rivera produced five “portable murals”—freestanding frescoes with bold images commemorating events in Mexican history. After the opening, to great publicity, Rivera added three more murals, now taking on New York subjects through monumental images of the urban working class and the social stratification of the city during the Great Depression. All eight were on display for the rest of the show’s run.

Coming Attraction is the eighth in a series of international shows organized by IPCNY throughout its twelve-year history and is its first presentation of Cuban printmaking. The exhibition features thirty-five screen-printed posters created to publicize Cuban films from the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s. Stephen Heller, noted authority on graphic design, writes: “Famous around the world for their brash originality and bright, clear graphic sensibility, Cuban cinema posters of the Revolutionary Era are held in as high esteem as the moodier and more abstract Polish film posters of the same era.” The works evoke a variety of ideas and practices within and alongside printmaking—film, graphic design, advertising, and political commentary.

Valdez and Bull, stone sculptor and printmaker respectively, approach the shared theme of the exhibition from diverse and personal perspectives. Valdez lives the unusual life of a peripatetic stone carver. She has completed commissions in situ in China, Peru, Argentina and Europe. Born in Argentina of an Italian mother and a Spanish father she has lived and worked in Brazil, Italy and Spain and the United States. Valdez’ limestone and marble works in this exhibition are inspired by her life of wandering, and by an empathy for the life of the displaced immigrant. Valdez seeks to recreate in her art the hard road endured by those caught within alien systems who seek the rootedness of home.

Bull, whose art has been exhibited worldwide, views the exhibition theme from a perspective of those estranged from home, soldiers in War. Inspired by the wellknown WW1 poem, In Flanders Fields, Bull’s work is a lamentation and a protest portraying the familiar drama: home destroyed, lives fractured and redefined by the often capricious vicissitudes of history.

"Abstract Universe" is an exhibition of large-scale pulverized glass and acrylic paintings by Carol Brown Goldberg. The exhibition is curated by Donald Kuspit, distinguished scholar and art critic, who describes this selection of Goldberg's work as "Baroque Color Field painting" that has been inspired by the artist's reflection on the Creation. The artist states that "In my art, I create a system, a layering, that allows me to get into a flow of timelessness, and the repetition of shapes and forms compound the meditative process. I am in awe at the alchemy of paint, and how fluid can be harnessed to create images that transport us into a realm of mystery."

In this body of work, Vega utilizes large-scale lead plates, stamps, oil paint and collage to depict scenes that embody his personal ideas of optimism.
Vega's new series references traditional latticed screens found in his native Melilla, a Spanish city located in North Africa. These architectural elements, made from ornamental patterns, function as windows in homes and convents. They keep the interiors private while allowing occupants vistas of the public outdoors. Vega transforms large scale malleable lead plates through engraving and deep cuts, producing geometric designs that play with ideas of seeing and being seen. In the haunting I Thought of That, Vega removes large sections of lead, revealing a vivid red field below.

This major installation of more than three hundred fifty objects from the Brooklyn Museum's premier collection of American art integrates a vast array of fine and decorative arts (silver, furniture, ceramics, and textiles) ranging in date from the colonial period to the present. For the first time, major objects from these exceptional collections are joined by selections from the Museum's important holdings of Native American and Spanish colonial art.

Frank Oscar Larson (1896-1964) was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, of Swedish immigrant parents and lived in Flushing, Queens most of his life. As an adult, Larson spent his days at a branch of the Empire Trust Company (now Bank of New York Mellon), working his way up through the ranks from auditor to vice-president, and spare time on weekends taking photographs of street life throughout New York City. He was an accomplished photographer who eloquently documented 1950s Chinatown, the Bowery, Hell’s Kitchen, City Island, Times Square, Central Park, and much more. This exhibition is compiled from thousands of negatives recently discovered stored away in his daughter-in-law’s house in Maine in 2009. Soren Larson, his grandson and a television news camera man and producer, has been scanning and printing the 55 year old images found stored in over 100 envelopes filled with mostly medium format, 2-1/4 x 2-1/4″ negatives, and neatly noted by location and date in Larson’s own hand.

Queens International 2012 presents artists ranging in age from their 20s through their 60s, who reflect Queens’ diversity, hailing from Taiwan, Israel, Mexico, Russia, Switzerland, Lithuania, Japan, Tibet, Uruguay and the US, some new to Queens, and others lifelong residents.

Francesca Woodman is the first comprehensive survey of the artist’s brief but extraordinary career to be seen in North America. More than thirty years after her death, the moment is ripe for a historical reconsideration of her work and its reception. Woodman’s oeuvre represents a remarkably rich and singular exploration of the human body in space and of the genre of self-portraiture in particular. Her interest in female subjectivity, seriality, Conceptualist practice, and photography’s relationship to both literature and performance are also hallmarks of the heady moment in American photography during which she came of age.

With collage—the juxtaposition of heterogeneous elements—and abstraction—the elimination of figurative imagery—as guiding principles, Chamberlain articulated the maxim that permeates his entire oeuvre: “it’s all in the fit.” Throughout his career, modulations in scale and medium provide a vital rhythm to his development. The sculptures range from the size of a fist to the girth of a generous hug to the height of a young, and eventually not so young, tree. Swelling and shrinking, in coats of multicolor, monochrome, or black-and-white paint, the survey of Chamberlain’s career displays the integrity of the artist’s gesture in diverse manifestations. Despite his commitment to abstraction, identifying anthropomorphic and zoomorphic traits in the lyrical, twisting forms is irresistible. Their playful titles are planted like so many red herrings: Belvo-Violet (1962), Miss Lucy Pink (1962), Rooster Starfoot (1976), Lord Suckfist (1989), and SPHINXGRIN TWO (1986/2010).

THE TALLEST BUILDING IN NYC > ONE WORLD TRADE CENTER

A week ago or so I learned that the new One World Trade Center (1WTC) was about to become the tallest building in New York City. As of April 30, 1WTC will officially overtake the Empire State Building. Once 2WTC is done, the two towers will overlook over us all once again.

I go around documenting how New York keeps on changing. This time you will see views going down the Hudson River Park to Battery Park, then to Fulton Street. You can see how 1WTC, 2WTC and the surrounding areas are coming along.

Watching the towers rise above the original skyline, looking from the marina at the Winter Garden and then behind it, 1WTC above it all.......

The first time I took pictures and video of downtown and the WTC was in 1993-1994. I remember the two towers rising above it all. Now, as I see these new two towers getting higher and higher, is hard not to go back in time.

It seems to me that I will always see the two original towers next to the new ones.

UNA NOCHE ganó más de un reconocimiento anoche en el Tribeca Film Festival. Se llevó el Best New Narrative Director, Lucy Mulloy; Best Actor in a Narrative Feature Film – Dariel Arrechada y Javier Nuñez Florian como Raúl y Elio; también Best Cinematography in a Narrative Feature Film – Cinematografía de Trevor Forrest y Shlomo Godder. La saga continúa y veremos que pasa con la desaparición de dos de los actores de la película (foto) que se habrían quedado en Miami en vez de venir al estreno de la peli en el Tribeca Film Festival de Nueva York. Amanecerá y veremos. La vida y el arte. O viceversa.
El Best Screenplay for a Narrative Feature Film va a la película argentina All In (La Suerte en Tus Manos), escrita por Daniel Burman y Sergio Dubcovsky. El director, Daniel Burman ha logrado una comedia inteligente, expansiva, real. Todo un treat.

Alex Catalan por su parte, se lleva el Special Jury Mention por la peli española Unit 7. (Grupo7).
Un gran corto con inmigrantes latinos, Paraíso se alza con el Best Documentary Short – Director Nadav Kurtz (USA).

Ví El Estudiante, la obra prima del argentino Santiago Mitre, cuando se estrenó en el pasado New York Film Festival (49th). Esta semana tienen la oportunidad de verla en una presentación especial de tres funciones durante el Havana Film Festival New York. Un thriller que sigue la vida de un estudiante medio desubicado y oportunista en una universidad bonairense que termina involucrado en la política universitaria con sus manipulaciones y corrupción de alto nivel. Aunque ambientada en el campus, El Estudiante es una metáfora del body politik at large de la Argentina.

LA 6ta CUMBRE DE LAS AMERICAS EN CARTAGENA

La mayoría de los líderes de las Américas se encuentran en Cartagena para la sexta cumbre continental bajo el lema: Conectando las Américas: Socios para la Prosperidad.
La Cumbre se enfocará en 'el rol de la integración física y la cooperación regional como medio para alcanzar mayores niveles de desarrollo y superar los desafíos del Hemisferio en varias áreas claves incluyendo pobreza y desigualdades, seguridad ciudadana, desastres y acceso y uso de tecnologías. La Cumbre, que se realiza cada tres años, ofrece la oportunidad a los países para definir conjuntamente una agenda hemisférica al más alto nivel que aborda los desafíos urgentes e impulsa un cambio positivo'.

La región se reune este año bajo circunstancias más favorables, con menos pobreza, más empleo, más democracia, mejor distribución de ingresos y más estabilidad financiera. Los retos son muchos, por supuesto, pero veo una voluntad política fuerte para apoyar estos cambios y enfrentar estos retos. Los Estados Unidos debe aceptar de una vez por todas que Latino América es su igual y que es esencial lograr la integración continental en igualdad de condiciones y respeto mutuo. La necesidad de una política exterior con enfoque Latino se hace apremiante, más aún si vemos los números de la población Latina y sus proyecciones para el futuro de los EEUU y de todo el continente.

Once more we are super happy to cover another edition of one of the great film festivals of NYC: THE 11th TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL from April 18th to the 29th.

The 2012 film selection includes feature films from 32 different countries, including 54 World Premieres. A total of 107 directors will be presenting feature works at the Festival, with 33 of these filmmakers presenting their feature directorial debuts. Among these directors, 25 are women. Twenty-six feature film directors are returning TFF filmmakers. The 2012 film slate was chosen from a total of 5950 submissions, a record number for the Festival.
The festival will open with the world premiere of THE FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT and will close with the Premiere of THE AVENGERS!

In the late ‘60s, a musician was discovered in a Detroit bar by two celebrated Motown producers who were struck by his soulful melodies and prophetic lyrics. They recorded an album that they believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. In fact, the album bombed and the singer disappeared into obscurity amid rumors of a gruesome on-stage suicide. But a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid South Africa and, over the next two decades, it became a phenomenon (as big as The Beatles). Two South African fans then set out to find out what really happened to their hero. Their investigation led them to a story more extraordinary than any of the existing myths about the artist known as Rodriguez. This is a film about hope, inspiration and the resonating power of music.

Este año estamos orgullosos de ser Patrocinadores o Media Sponsor del 13th Havana Film Festival New York que se realiza del 12 al 20 de Abril. Hemos visto crecer al festival desde sus comienzos en el 2000 y nos complace sobremanera ser parte de la celebración de lo mejor del cine latino en Nueva York. Este año tenemos más de 40 películas de 13 países que se presentarán durante los 11 días del festival temas de y sobre Latinoamérica, el Caribe y de los Latinos de los EEUU. Los países presentes son Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Spain, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, y los EEUUU. Además se contemplan paneles y eventos gratuitos en diversos puntos de Nueva York.

Felicitamos a Carol Rosenberg junto con Diana Vargas y su equipo que hacen posible uno de los mejores festivales de cine y uno de los eventos centrales de la cartelera cultural de Nueva York cada primavera. Habanastation, Juan of the Dead, El Estudiante y The Zero Hour son apenas algunas de las producciones meas esperadas.

* The 13th Havana Film Festival New York > April 12 - 20 > with special events April 20th at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, and April 20-22 at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens ans April 17-19 at El Instituto Cervantes in Manhattan > HNYFF.

* Opening Night Film > Habanastation. La ópera prima de Ian Padrón y éxito de taquilla en Cuba, es una divertida e ingeniosa mirada a La Habana de hoy a través de los ojos de dos niños provenientes de clases sociales distintas.

Habanastation también forma parte del programa familiar el 15 de abril, a las 12:30pm, en el Quad Cinema, y en el Museum of the Moving Image en Astoria, el 21 de abril, a las 12 pm.

* Closing Night Film > Juan of the Dead (Juan de los Muertos), la primera película sobre “zombies” hecha en Cuba y dirigida por Alejandro Brugués. La cinta gira en torno a una serie de eventos que comienzan misteriosamente a desarrollarse.

En principio, Juan cree que es solo otra etapa de la revolución cubana pero luego se da cuenta que los culpable no son humanos y que será muy difícil matarlos y decide crear la empresa “Matamos a sus seres queridos”.Juan de los Muertos es la segunda película de Brugés.

El festival rinde tributo a la actriz cubana Eslinda Nuñez. Durante más de cuarenta años, Eslinda Nuñez ha participado en algunas de las películas más importantes hechas en Cuba, incluyendo Lucía de Humberto Solas, Memorias del subdesarrollo de Tomás Gutiérrez Alea. La artista presentará en Nueva York las cintas Amada, Amada, Cecilia (dirigidas por Humberto Solas) y Bailando Chá Chá Chá (Manuel Herrera.)

HFFNY también rinde homenaje a uno de los maestros de la fotografía en el cine latinoamericano: Raúl Pérez Ureta. Colaborador de directores como Fernando Pérez (Madagascar, La vida es silbar, Suite Habana), Daniel Díaz Torres (Otra mujer, Alicia en el pueblo de Maravillas, Hacerse el sueco), Gerardo Chijona (Boleto al paraíso, Perfecto amor equivocado), Pérez Ureta es el jefe del Departamento de Fotografía de la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión de San Antonio de los Baños de Cuba. Pérez Ureta presentará dos películas ganadoras de premios a la mejor fotografía: Martí. El ojo del canario (The Eye of Canary), estreno en Nueva York, y Madrigal. Ambas cintas son dirigidas por Fernando Pérez.

Otras atracciones del HFFNY 2012

- Presentación especial de El estudiante (Santiago Mitre/Argentina), ganadora en importantes festivales de cine a nivel internacional y que participó en el Festival de Cine de Nueva York 2011.

El estudiante cuenta la historia de Roque, quien llega a Buenos Aires para asistir a la universidad, pero termina encontrando su verdadera vocación: ser militante político y líder estudiantil; su principal actriz, Valeria Correa estará presente para la sección de preguntas y respuestas.

- The Zero Hour de Diego Velasco. (Venezuela)
La Hora Cero narra la historia de La Parca (Zapata 666), un temible sicario que se ve obligado a secuestrar una clínica privada para salvar al amor de su vida, Ladydi (Amanda Key). No tardan en llegar los policías y con ellos un circo mediático, quienes convierten a nuestro personaje en un héroe nacional. La Parca descubre que salvarle la vida a Ladydi será difícil, pero escapar con sus secuaces será una tarea casi imposible.

El tiempo empieza a acabarse, y lo que parecía un plan perfecto terminará en un frenético desenlace donde la Parca se verá obligado a enfrentar los errores del pasado, y a descubrir que sus peores enemigos están más cerca de lo que él imagina.

- Una novia errante (2007-A Stray Girlfriend), y Los Marziano (2011). De Ana Katz, quien estará disponible en ambas proyecciones para dialogar con el público.

- Cuatro documentales cortos: Simplemente Korda, del director cubano Roberto Chile. El artista cubano Alberto Korda, conocido a nivel mundial principalmente por su icónica fotografía del Che Guevara, comparte su fascinación por la belleza femenina y los primeros años de la Revolución Cubana. También del director Roberto Chile se presentará Yo soy Tata Nganga, basado en la vida de Enrique Hernández Armenteros, más conocido como “Enrique de La Hata”.

- La maestra, de Catherine Murphy. Basado en la reforma educativa que en un año cambió los niveles de alfabetización de Cuba. La mayoría de los voluntarios eran mujeres. Esta película cuenta sus historias.

Eventos en el Instituto Cervantes > Abril 16, 18 y 19

- Lunes 16 de abril, 6:00pm: Omar de la Cruz, director del Dominican Global Film Festival, presenta una serie de cortos dominicanos que fueron presentados en su edición 2011.

A las 7:30pm, el panel From-Script-To-Screen (“del guión a la pantalla”), presenta a cuatro guionistas profesionales y diferentes entre sí: Pablo Solarz, Ana Katz, Jairo Carrillo y Marco Dutra. Moderado por Ángel Lara, entre otros temas el panel abordará: género vs. cine de autor; la audiencia (el espectador) y los elementos involucrados en el proceso creativo y la importancia de la relación “triangular” productor-director-escritor. Luego del panel, HFFNY ofrecerá un cóctel para celebrar la creación de la Fundación para las Narrativas Audiovisuales en Español (FUNAVE) de Nueva York.

- Miércoles 18 de abril es la noche de los documentales. A las 6:00pm se estrenará Los 100 sones cubanos, dirigido por Edesio Alejandro (Cuba) y que fuera nominado al Grammy. El director estará presente para un diálogo con el público. A las 7:40pm, es el turno de Ser un ser humano, una serie de películas producidas por la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión de San Antonio de los Baños (EICTV) de Cuba, en colaboración con estudiantes de siete escuelas internacionales. Habrá una sesión de preguntas con Rafael Rosal, director de la EICTV.

- Jueves 19 de abril, a las 7:00pm: como parte de la serie de películas con temática indígena, el HFFNY presentará un abanico de cortometrajes seleccionados por Totonacapán en corto, el festival organizado por el Centro de las Artes Indígenas de Veracruz, México. También habrá una muestra de Cine Maya, hecho por estudiantes mayas de la Escuela de Cine Casa Comal de Guatemala. Tras las proyecciones de los documentales se abrirá el panel “Historia y Memoria Social: una auto-reflexión del cinema latinoamericano”. El panel de realizadores, moderado por Javier Rioyo, director del Instituto Cervantes, entre otros temas abordará: las comunidades indígenas y la ideología política; las voces subalternas y los tratados hegemónicos; visibilidad y representación de estas comunidades en la prensa; reconciliación de los crímenes de guerra y restauración a través de las perspectivas de género, religión y etnia.

- Fin de semana de clausura en Queens y el Bronx > Abril 20 - 22.

Esta banda de 72 años es una de las joyas del legado musical de Cuba. En este documental los integrantes de la orquesta comparten sus anécdotas e historias de éxito durante dos conciertos en 2011 a través de un viaje musical por Havana, Cienfuegos y Nueva York.

- Ahí Na'Ma'! > Luego de la proyección del documental, habrá una fiesta animada por el DJ Asho y la actuación en vivo de Gerardo Cortino y sus Habaneros > 20 de abril > Bronx Museum of the Arts. Free.

PREMIOS HAVANA PRIZE STAR.

Diecinueve películas competirán por el honor de ganar el tercer Havana Star Prize. Las categorías son: Mejor Película, Mejor Director y Mejor Guión. También en contienda está el segundo Havana Star Prize al Mejor Documental, a entregarse el 20 de abril durante la Noche de Cierre del festival.

Opening Night Film: The Festival opens April 12th at the Directors Guild Theatre with the N.Y. Premiere of Habanastation, the latest film by Cuban director Ian Padrón. The film presents the story of two young boys who become friends despite their differences; a film that speaks of a Havana that reveals two distinct faces from the everyday life of these youngsters.

Closing Night Film: HFFNY closes on April 20th at 7 pm at the New York Directors Guild Theatre with the highly anticipated N.Y. premiere of Juan of the Dead, Alejandro Brugues' second feature film. In this first "zombie movie" made in Cuba, a series of strange events start to develop: more and more people become violent, attacking each other. At first, Juan believes that it's just another stage of the Cuban revolution but then he realizes that the culprits are not human and killing them would be very difficult.
