Twilight made him a heartthrob … and Robert Pattison is ramping up his sexual adventures in his new film which is previewed at Glasgow Film Festival. He talks to Will Lawrence

“Christina Ricci, Uma Thurman and Kristen Scott Thomas…” He pauses before flashing a smile. “And I sleep with all of them!”

After five years cocooned in a teenage Twilight world of angst, anger, vampires and werewolves (in which sleeping with people is a complicated process), the 25-year-old Englishman clearly enjoyed this romp through 19th-century Paris.

Perhaps the best known of the six novels by French short story writer Guy de Maupassant, Bel Ami is certainly his most subversive, savage and ironic piece, charting the tale of Georges Duroy, a young man who travels through 1890s’ Paris, from cockroach-plagued garrets to magnificent salons, employing his wits and beauty as he bids to rise from poverty to fame.

The story comes to the big screen in March — previewed by early screenings at the Glasgow Film Festival later this month — courtesy of theatre directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod, who have put together a piece that resonates strongly today, regardless of its period setting.

“This character uses sex and women’s huge attraction for him to get to the top of the pile,” says Donnellan of Duroy. ”It’s an unremitting world and, in the end, he gets the lot. There are no consequences for him. People think it’s very modern, somebody getting to the top with very little talent. Duroy has an enormous desire to get to the top, and that is his talent. It’s about incredibly modern themes. That’s one of the thrills of doing this story. It is set in 1890s’ Paris but it would almost be too near to the bone to do it now.”

To bring the laconic and lovely-looking Duroy to life, the directors turned to Twilight star Pattinson, one of the most desired men on the planet, whose real-life journey, while not quite mirroring the lothario lifestyle of his character, has certainly benefited from his exquisite good looks.

“My Bel Ami guy doesn’t have a conscience,” explains Pattinson. ”Most fictional characters are driven by some target, but he is like a reverse character. He’s so content to do nothing and thinks everything should just be given to him. But if someone slights him, or directs any insult at him, the most overwhelming energy grabs him and he turns into this absolute devil who will do anything.”

An attack on the invidious French society of the time, the Maupassant story is dark and rather disturbing in places, but few could argue with its no-holds-barred candour.

“It’s like in Giant,” Pattinson continues, referring to the 1956 George Stevens picture starring James Dean, ”when he builds the entire empire to say ‘f*** you’. Duroy is exactly like that but without any of the redeeming characteristics. The whole story is about these people trying to beat him down into remorse, and just as he’s about to touch it, something good happens to him again.

“And then he has another run of luck, right at the end, until eventually he stabs everyone in the back and then wins the lottery. It’s a happy ending for him and no-one else.”

Given the contrast between the caddish Duroy and Pattinson’s chivalrous Twilight character, Edward Cullen, it’s tempting to think that the actor has selected Bel Ami as a conscious bid to show his range, to prove that there’s more to his make-up than a fiendish pout and excellent hair.

22. Robert Pattinson in the ‘Twilight’ Movies

Playing a vampire in a series of movies comes with its own set of problems, not the least of which is the built-in time limit of playing a character who doesn’t age. While Robert Pattinson was 22 playing 17 in the first Twilight movie, he’ll be 26 playing the part in the final film. Forgive us the pun, but that’s getting a little long in the tooth for a teenage vampire.

Nikki Reed shared with E! Online that Kristen Stewart was a pretty rocking vampire for Breaking Dawn, Part 2. We can’t wait to see for ourselves! In the meantime, check out what she had to say about our Kstew.

We caught up with Nikki over the weekend at the Rolling Stone Super Bowl party and had to ask the chickie—who’s played ice queen Rosalie in all of the vampy flicks so far—if there was any part of BD Pt. 2 that she was particularly excited for fans to see:

“Kristen makes a really awesome vampire,” Ms. Reed gushed to us. “And I think that everybody has been waiting to see how that transformation goes down and she makes a really beautiful vampire.”

 

Mackenzie Foy (aka Renesmee Cullen) has joined the cast of the film The Warren Files, along with Ramona and Beezus star Joey King. The film will also star Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson.  From Collider:

McKenzie Foy and Joey King are in talks to star opposite Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Lilli Taylor, and Ron Livingston in New Line’s horror feature The Warren Files, formerly known asThe Conjuring.  The script by Chad and Carey Hayes is based on the story of the Perron family who inhabited a haunted Rhode Island farmhouse in the 1970s.  Taylor and Livingston are the Perrons.  Farmiga and Wilson will play Ed and Lorraine Warren, a husband and wife team of psychic investigators.  According to Variety, director James Wan (Insidious) will start shooting in North Carolina later this month.

Just an interesting tidbit: This marks the fourth collaboration of Patrick Wilson with a Twilight alum. He is currently starring in the TV show A Gifted Man with Rachelle Lefevre, he starred in director David Slade’s film Hard Candy, and he was the husband of Elizabeth Reaser in Young Adult!

Here’s some exciting news! Jackson Rathbone is going to be a dad! It looks like Edward and Bella aren’t the only new parents on the Twilight block. Jackson’s rep has confirmed to US Weekly the big news that his girlfriend is five months pregnant with the couple’s first child! Congratulations to the duo!

Catherine Hardwicke is teaming up with Evan Rachel Wood, who she directed in Thirteen (along with Nikki Reed), for the film Plush. The film sounds like it’s a pretty sexy tale, quite different from her latest films (Twilight, Red Riding Hood).

Having described that boxing film, “Knockout,” as a story that “goes back to more of my ‘Thirteen’ days,” it looks like Hardwicke has been trying to hark back to her earlier sensibilities — a notion which is now affirmed by the fact she’s circling an erotic thriller set in the L.A. music industry titled “Plush” that has also Evan Rachel Wood attached to star. The project was co-scripted by Hardwicke and Artie Nelson and would potentially reunite Wood with the helmer who earned her a Golden Globe Best Actress nomination at the age of 13.

No word yet on where this project lies on Hardwicke’s calendar, but in an interview at Sundance, she explained that she’ll be “doing another cool movie with Evan next, a really wild erotic thriller about a character really pushing the edge, pushing the envelope.” It’s a generic synopsis, but does “next” mean “Knockout” with the Rapaces (which was originally set to shoot last fall) has been pushed?

Demian Bichir is the star of Chris Weitz’s film A Better Life, and receive an oscar nomination for the role! In a new interview with Collider, Bichir tells how he met Chris Weitz at an audition for New Moon!

Hadn’t you met with Chris Weitz a few years prior to making this film?

BICHIR: It was not so many years back, but I got a call from my agents saying that I had an audition for New Moon. It was not in my plans to become a vampire, but I wanted to meet Chris Weitz. So, I went to talk to him and I remember that we started talking about this gardener. He started telling me everything about this story about an undocumented worker, and I just couldn’t get it straight. I thought it was a gardener vampire, or something like that. I was a little bit confused. And then, he told me, “We don’t have a script yet, but I’d like you to read it, as soon as we have it ready.” A year later, I got ahold of the script and I fell in love with it instantly.
