What:

A dancing and reading group gathered to question the current state of dance and to research and propose a (new-ish) ontology for it. As supporting text we will be using Paz Rojo’s book “To dance in the Age of No Future,” which argues from an aesthetic, philosophical and socio-political perspective for dance to be seen as dance

-How might dance enter a performative context on its own terms, not being in service to anything but itself? -how might a dancer accompany such a dance so that it does not solely refer back to the dancer as a subject/body, but to the dance in itself?

-How might one witness the dance in itself (as opposed to seeing a subject dancing, or a dance which only refers back to an identity or a concept as its main concern)? How could we practice seeing this dance? -What kinds of dramaturgical tools make space for a dance to be seen on its own terms in performance? -What are the terms of dance? How might one think with the ontology of dance?

How:

As a group we will read through Paz Rojo’s book “To dance in the Age of No Future.” Each week we will read a section of the book, and collectively develop practices aiming to engage with the questions of the research. Each week we will also create small performative experiments for each other to practice ways of seeing dance in itself, and to develop dramaturgical strategies which can assist making space for dance in different performative contexts.

For the final week Paz will join us in a 4 day long working session. The first day we will bring her into our research, the second day she will share with us her practices and the current state of her work, and the 3rd and 4th day we will make a laboratory together.

Why?

In our current times, we are under the influence of subjecthood as the main force of cultural capital in performance making and curation. When dancing onstage, this might amount to becoming one’s own product, or the power of a performer’s Identity as the central material a dance can point back towards. This self-referential loop can prove to be paralyzing, stifling a dance and what it can offer, as well as the stories a body can offer through movement. As a strategy against this we research a dance practice which witnesses dance on its own terms, pointing to movement in itself. This decentering away from Subjecthood as the main form of cultural capital on stage instead asks us to direct our eyes to witness the relationship between a body and a context, to the relational ecologies present in the space.

These questions refute a market of dance which asks us to extract shallow identities to sell our work by, and only through which our work might be seen. Instead, we practice an engagement with the “the body of dance”*(Rojo) through the “populated solitude” of the self as a strategy to pluralize meaning, and maybe to escape it. Dance, to paraphrase Paz is always in the middle, it is a movement and movement is always between. To accompany a dance as an always becoming is to resist a classification, an extraction. In other words, paraphrasing Báyó Okómoláfé, identity is the mark of erasure, and the body is always fugitive(moving and alien).

Additionally, these questions attempt to reformulate how we envision bodies, from the individualistic embodyment discourse of one’s own body, to an embodiment situated in the relationship between human, animal, spatial, and cosmic bodies, responsibilizing us towards an unalienated body of things.

Who?

This group is for anyone inspired by dance, these questions, and the opportunity to create culture together. To collectively learn and mentor each other, through building shared reference, practices, and to do so outside of an institutional frame. This might be for anyone caught in the fear driven and self-referential paranoia when trying to do/make a dance which others will see. For those with a curiosity to expand the philosophical and political ways of thinking what a dance can be and do? A curiosity to develop ways of thinking dance beyond the confines of subjecthood, identity, dancer, or representation of anything beyond the dance-in-itself.

More Practical Details: Cost: 50€ per person. 10€ for a physical copy of To Dance in the Age of No Future (However a free downloadable pdf can be found online) and 40€ for bringing Paz here in March. Nathaniel Moore is a Brussels-based artist with roots in the San Francisco experimental dance scene. Through their work as a dancer, researcher, choreographer, and archivist he is inspired by a necessity to address alienation, and create moments for connection through the activation of shared social, psychic, emotional, and political bodies.

They have shared their work in Brussels, Berlin, and San Francisco, and have worked for numerous choreographers in North America and Europe. In 2022 they completed A.Pass(advanced performance and scenography studies), where they continued Infrastructure of Ghosts, a research formulating an active collaboration with ghosts, the meeting of which served as a portal through which to engage social embodymeants. Other current engagements include: working with the archive of Ponderosa alongside Stephanie Maher. Tripsitting: a care practice in which Nathaniel and Andre Chapatte take turns curating and producing each others performance practices in periphery venues throughout Brussels.Trancing into the Collective Imagination: a group research with Stijn Smeets, Asher Lev, and Irina Lav involving collective trance, dreaming, archetype, and catharsis. And being a member at Artist Commons, a group of artists who gather around creating studio and performance spaces in temporary occupation buildings throughout Brussels.

Tras varios años trabajando en otros soportes (video-ensayos; laboratorios, contextos de investigación y comisariados) presentamos la creación escénica ECLIPSE : MUNDO, una aproximación al dispositivo escénico y a la danza desde la óptica de un «plano de percepción destituyente». El término «destitución» está asociado con la puesta en crisis y la pérdida de sentido, pero también con la posibilidad de contemplar lo aún-no producido. ¿Cómo comprometerse con lo que todavía no es? ¿Cuál es la responsabilidad del arte con respecto a la creación de futuro?. Hay un aspecto errante de la materialidad a través del cual la danza no estaría obligada a perseguir un futuro. La danza no es una coreografía a realizar, sino que ha de ser creada en el lugar exacto donde ya está.

Un agujero se abre en el espacio de la caja negra. Un agujero negro. ECLIPSE : MUNDO es la puesta en práctica de un «abandono» (que es el origen etimológico de la palabra eclipse). Se trata de poner en movimiento una cinética ausente de perspectiva como experiencia de continuidad: una coreografía interrumpida por su propia preparación y simultáneamente una danza tomando forma. La posibilidad de contemplar (un) mundo en el que todo sigue siendo, pero de otra manera. El murmullo de un bajo continuo que desactiva toda intencionalidad por medio de un distraer, un dejar perderse. Un danzeo que aunque no signifique nada, consiga hacer algo.

Si en la pasada edición arrojábamos la pregunta ¿qué puede un cuerpo? en relación con el actual contexto de capitalismo global, este año hemos invitado a Diego Agulló, Quim Bigas, Fernando Castro, Arantxa Martínez, Anto Rodríguez y Carme Torrent  a sostener la misma pregunta en conversación con sus propias prácticas e intereses artísticos. Entendemos esta edición como un EP o Maxisingle del festival, en el que los recursos económicos han sido dedicados a apoyar el trabajo y el desarrollo de creadores que siguen cuestionando lo que un cuerpo puede. Incitamos así un proceso de investigación y creación entre el cuerpo, la performatividad, la palabra, las imágenes y el pensamiento que culminará con la presentación de propuestas escénicas, conferencias y encuentros los días 22, 23 y 24 de Mayo.

Durante tres días el Patio de la Casa Encendida se transformará en un territorio de intensificación de la pregunta ¿qué puede un cuerpo?, un horizonte a través del cual vislumbrar sus potencias y ahondar en sus contradicciones. Este año, quisiéramos dar valor al propio hecho de preguntarnos confiando en que lo que podemos con nuestras preguntas, quizá esté anunciando lugares, presencias y sensibilidades con capacidad para desbordar expectativas y aventurarnos a un baile desconocido.

Mañana Jueves 19, comenzamos la segunda semana de propuestas en “¿qué puede un cuerpo?” en La Casa Encendida, Madrid hasta el 22 de Junio.

La pregunta-enunciado que Espinoza formuló era: “nadie sabe lo que puede un cuerpo”. Diego Agulló nos recordó en su conferencia “bailes peligrosos” que, continuar la potencia de “no saber lo que un cuerpo puede”, es la cuestión. Es decir, no intentamos formalizar la respuesta a lo que un cuerpo puede, lo que hacemos es, darnos la oportunidad de bailárnosla (diego dixit),

quizá, materializar el levantamiento de la pregunta ¿qué puede un cuerpo? como potencia,  juego, lucidez, en medio de la noche …

Durante esta semana, mientras que Felipe VI se convertirá en el nuevo Rey de España, abrimos una reflexión en torno al cuerpo danzante (movilizado) y los modos de producción postfordistas, y sobre cómo el sujeto ideológico y la performance en masa empiezan a bailarse en un suerte de performance de(l)tiempo, de corporalidades y movimientos cualquieras.

Quizá el ‘yo’ pueda abandonarse al atractivo no jerarquizado de lo que (le) toca…

¿Es el cuerpo registrable? ¿Tiene propiedad? Desde la cultura libre, la remezcla y el dominio público reflexionaremos también, sobre como pensamos el movimiento como generador, recurso, herramienta e interrogante para pensar la cultura, cualquiera, pero también, aquella relacionada con la creación escénica contemporánea y con el arte del movimiento.

La pregunta ¿qué puede un cuerpo? propone que ‘lo que puede un cuerpo’ puede ser distinto de lo que quiere el movimiento del capitalismo global. La corporalidad del mundo se sitúa en relación a los entornos y las máquinas de un sistema interdependiente y complejo, que empuja a los cuerpos a adoptar la mecánica de una coreografía totalizadora y supuestamente libre, exigiéndoles ser ‘productores’, ‘productos’ y ‘reproductores’ de un movimiento agotador, que les sitúa entre poder ‘ser, lo que les dejan ser’ y no poder ‘ser, lo que deberían ser’.

En este escenario, parece que la subjetividad del cuerpo está siendo expropiada de su propia capacidad para generar existencia. El cuerpo parece un fantasma ideológicamente constituido, como si no tuviera cuerpo o como si hubiera dejado de ‘dar cuerpo’. Por eso, preguntarnos por ‘lo que un cuerpo puede’, supone plantear la interrupción corpórea y somática de los modos de ser que imponen la visibilidad, la conectividad, la flexibilidad, el consenso y el control de la vida capitalista. Y además, pensar ¿qué clase de inmovilización está ya tomando cuerpo en el dominio de lo coreo-celular, lo coreo-político y lo coreo-estético?

¿qué puede un cuerpo? apuesta por la capacidad de acción, aunque ésta implique interrumpirse así misma. El cuerpo, como potencia anónima puede devenir cuerpo cualquiera. Un cuerpo, que entre la resistencia y la producción de subjetividad, experimente el ‘movimiento, como el despertar del sujeto subalterno’ frente a la ‘coreografía, entendida como aparato de gobierno’, lo que propone desafíos decisivos en el terreno de la danza, la disposición de los cuerpos y la producción cultural.

Aproximándonos a cómo la coreografía, las prácticas disidentes de movimiento y la creación artística contemporánea se sitúan críticamente frente a un sistema de dominación que no cesa de desarrollar su poder por un lado y de debilitar y fragilizar por otro, nuestro objetivo es abrir una reflexión que experimente la re-iniciación de los cuerpos como espacio creador de intensidades subversivas.

El contexto acoge coreógrafos, filósofos, teóricos, productores culturales y artistas locales e internacionales.Durante dos semanas consecutivas, de Lunes a Miércoles, proponemos un espacio de investigación y conocimiento compartido, con 3 laboratorios cuyos facilitadores aproximarán las preguntas propuestas en este contexto desde sus prácticas y la experimentación compartida junto a un grupo local e internacional de participantes invitados. De Jueves a Domingo este espacio de investigación se abrirá a través de la presentación pública de conferencias, documentales, conversaciones y encuentros y las propuestas de artistas y coreógrafos locales e internacionales.

Durante la primera semana las propuestas abordarán la relación de la coreografía contemporánea como cuerpo-máquina y su analogía con experimentos y tentativas institucionales, la distribución del cuerpo-objeto mediante la desactivación de las jerarquías y la co-simetría. Durante la segunda semana, las propuestas abordarán la relación de movimiento cualquiera vs. coreografía, la cultura libre aplicada a las artes vivas, y ‘el movimiento’, como fuerza interruptora de las formas de trabajo contemporáneas.

Master Programme in Choreography and Bachelor Programme in Dance Performance

The Master Programme in Choreography comprises two years of advanced studies. It is research preparatory, and qualifies the student for a Master of Fine Arts. The Programme develops the student’s critical consciousness and understanding of contemporary choreographic practices through a wide range of studies, based on how aesthetics and art affect and are affected by different ways of experiencing and understanding the world.

In the programme, choreography and theory are both approached as practice and as extensions of each other. Thematic learning processes include both practical and theoretical knowledge, training activities, research and interdisciplinary meetings with other artistic and scientific fields of knowledge and expression. Furthermore, the programme highlights the dynamics of our individual and collective roles within art and society.

The programme offers a context to generate knowledge and methods to critically explore practical and conceptual tools, principles established by contemporary choreographic practices and to work towards the expansion and development of choreography. The students are engaged in processes that lay bare the ideological, ethical and operative framework within which choreography finds its expressions.

After completing the master programme you may obtain a Master Degree of Fine Arts in Choreography. A Master of Fine Arts qualifies the student for artistic research programmes.

The language of instruction is English.

DOCHs Bachelor Programme in Dance Performance is an education in contemporary dance, artistic creation and performance. The education provides physical and theoretical knowledge about contemporary dance with a focus on the dancer’s practice and artistic process.

Theory and practices, aesthetics and expressions are explored individually and in collaborations in order to provide the student with various approaches towards movement, working methods, creation, staging and production.

Dance Performance includes knowledge of choreographic methods and dance as artistic representation in society. The programme equips the student with the tools necessary to develop as an independent artist in the field of contemporary dance, providing divergent approaches to dance study and emphasizing plasticity of thought as a keystone in an innovative approach to physical craft. The role of the dancer is considered authorial. Hence the study of this role includes articulating the dancer’s performative authorship as an active participation in the evolution of contemporary culture and politics.

Dance as the main field of study provides an understanding of the body in motion as a tool for the development of individual artistic expression, interpretative skill and critical reflection. The student is given the opportunity to develop a language to communicate and document artistic as well as research processes.

The teachers of the BA Programme in Dance Performance are professional artists and teachers recruited nationally and internationally, which among other things serves to strengthen the relationship between DOCH and the field, helpful to the students in their future profession.

After finishing the studies, the student is well prepared to work as an independent artist in a variety of scenic arts. The education provides the students with knowledge essential to a future career in dance as well as further education in the second cycle for example a master´s program.
