Germany. Why this country really sucks once in a while.

"It’s never been easy to be German. Four months ago I published a post about why Germany struggles with Web 2.0 with exactly the same words. My thesis then was the same thesis today: Germans love to be whiny, are risk-averse and love big institutions which half-heartedly manage their personal responsibilites. Germans simply don’t like to be individually creative so much. We like to talk about it, but at the end of the day entrepreneurship isn’t our kind of thing. Big media corporations, the state or labour unions will do the job…they always did. And no, that German idea of lifestyle does not fit well with our decentralized concept of a digital world."

Germany’s Mr Startup launches his own HuffPo

"Serial founder and investor Lukasz Gadowski constantly taps new online markets. In his latest venture, the entrepreneur from Berlin ( who is best known for his part in the success of Spreadshirt, StudiVZ, Brands4Friends and many German startups) now has plans to emulate Citizen Kane and become a major league publisher.

Immaterials: The ghost in the field

Mich faszinieren unsichtbare Informationen um mich herum, die sich nur mit Hilfe eines Geräts sichtbar machen lassen. Wo ich nichts sehe, können Tonnen von Informationen versteckt sein. Augmented Reality bekommt in diesem Bereich gerade die meiste Aufmerksamkeit, bei der jemand Informationen in einen Raum/an ein Objekt legt und ich muss durch eine präparierte Kamera schauen, um sie zu sehen.

Neben der AR faszinieren mich persönlich fast noch mehr die Dinge um mich herum, die physikalisch da für mein Auge aber trotzdem nicht zu erkennen sind wie z.B. Funkwellen. Wie würde es unser Verhalten im Raum verändern, wenn wir all die Strahlen und Funkbereiche von Handys, WLANs und Bluetooth-Geräten sehen könnten?

Genau mit diesem Thema haben sich Jack Schulze und Timo Arnall in ihrem neuen Film nach Nearness beschäftigt, in dem sie das Funkfeld eines RFID-Lesers sichtbar gemacht haben. Ausführliche Artikel dazu bei Berg und Touch.

Gutes Blogger-Seeding am Beispiel von Markus Albers

Blogger-Seedings scheinen immer noch das beliebteste Mittel im offensichtlich sehr begrenzten Werkzeugkasten der “Wir machen jetzt auch dieses Social-Dings”-Agenturen zu sein. Selbst ein “Ups, ich hatte ja mal ein Blog”-Blogger wie ich bekommt fast täglich Anfragen, über irgendeinen Müll zu schreiben. Das meiste ist langweilig und wird sofort gelöscht. Manches ist so dreist scheiße, dass man eine sarkastische Mail zurück schreibt. Nur ganz selten macht sich jemand richtig Mühe, recherchiert die relevanten Blogger, schreibt eine freundliche Mail und sucht den persönlichen Kontakt. Und da so jemand heute Geburtstag hat, möchte ich ihn heute mal als Leuchtturmbeispiel zelebrieren.

Markus Albers ist inzwischen bei mir längst in der “Freund”-Kategorie unter “1.0″. Wenn immer ich in Berlin bin, versuchen wir uns auf einen Kaffee zu treffen. Er hat mich für sein neues Buch interviewt. Wir haben auch durchaus schon über gemeinsame Projekte nachgedacht.
All das hat mit einer Mail von ihm angefangen, in der er mir anbot, mir sein Buch “Morgen komm ich später rein” zu schicken. Mit seinem Thema und der Nebenbeierwähnung, dass er auch für Monocle schreibt, hatte er sofort mein Interesse. Durch den persönlichen Kontakt angeregt, habe ich das Buch sofort gelesen, rezensiert und es seitdem, wo ich nur konnte, promotet.

Das sollte auch zeigen, dass ich gerne Werbung für Produkte mache. Ausschlaggebend ist, wie oben beschrieben einfach, ob mir Produkt und die Person(en) dahinter sympathisch sind bzw. ob ich einen persönlichen Bezug herstellen kann. “Social Media” kann so einfach sein.

Bisher war ich von der High Line nur durch Vorträge und von fremden Impressionen beeindruckt. Nun war ich endlich selbst da und konnte mir das ganze vor Ort ansehen. Klares Fazit: die Aufmerksamkeit, die das Projekt eines Gartens auf einem stillgelegtem Hochgleis zwischen Meatpacking und Chelsea in Manhattan bekommt, ist mehr als berechtigt. Man merkt vor allem an den Details, wie lange die Initiatoren des Projekts mit dem Architektenteam an dem Konzept gearbeitet haben. Alles ist darauf ausgerichtet, den New Yorkern einen nahen Ort der Erholung und der Gemeinschaft zu schaffen. Und der Andrang sollte andere Stadtplanner mehr als aufmerksam machen, wie gut uns solche “Naherholungsgebiete” tun.

Ich war schon wieder in New York. Yeah. I know… Ich verdanke das Twitter. Eine alte Freundin hat vor ca. einem halben Jahr angefangen, mir zu “follown” und mochte wohl, was ich so an Links und Inhalten twitterte. Da ihre Gruppe von Social Entrepreneurs sich letztes Wochenende in New York traf, hat sich mich kurzerhand dazu eingeladen, um ein bisschen Inspiration und Feedback zu aktuellen Entwicklungen und daraus resultierenden Möglichkeiten zu geben.

Und plötzlich war ich wieder für ein paar Tage in New York und habe es genossen, mit einer ziemlich ungewöhnlichen und leicht verrückten Gruppe (zwei Britten, zwei “Southern”-Girls, ein großer, dünner Kiwi und, äh, Brad) unterwegs zu sein.

Neue FROH! Ausgabe zum Thema Wenden

Open publication – Free publishing – More werte

Ursprünglich war es mal als einmaliges Non-Profit Konzeptmagazin zu Weihnachten geplant. Aber nachdem FROH! letztes Jahr auf so viel positive Resonanz gestoßen ist, haben sich die Herausgeber entschlossen, es auch weiterhin zu besonderen Ereignissen im Jahr herauszubringen.

Nun ist die zweite Ausgabe erschienen und kann auf der Webseite bestellt werden. Ausgehend vom 20. Jubiläum des Mauerfalls dreht sich diesmal alles um das Thema ‚Wenden‘.

FROH! nimmt den 9. November zum Anlass, um von Menschen zu erzählen, bei denen sich alles gewendet hat. Und von Orten, an denen das Wunder passiert und die Geschichte neu geschrieben wird … Die Arbeit an Wenden hat unser Redaktionsteam die letzten 5 Monate beschäftigt. Wir sind in jeder Hinsicht „froh“, dass wir auf die Unterstützung hochkarätiger Autorinnen und Autoren bzw. Gestalterinnen und Gestalter bauen konnten.

Wer über FROH! auf dem Laufenden bleiben will, kann auf Twitter oder Facebook vorbeischauen.

Wir sind es gewöhnt, Dinge zu berühren, um sie zu aktivieren. Von Knöpfen bis zu Touchscreens, dieses Verhaltensmuster hat sich tief in uns verwurzelt. Das lässt sich täglich an den Eingangstüren der Agentur beobachten, wo praktisch jeder seine Zugangskarte auf den Sensor tippt, obwohl ein kurzes Davorhalten in wenigen Zentimeter Entfernung auch schon genügen würde.

RF(ID) und NFC sind Technologien, die uns das Aktivieren durch Nähe statt Berührung ermöglichen und dadurch unsere gewohnten Muster hinterfragen. Mit diesem Thema haben sich Timo Arnall und Jack Schulze für Touch beschäftigt. Unter anderem inspiriert von dem bekannten Toyota-Werbespot ist ein Clip entstanden, der die Möglichkeiten von Nähe statt Berührung erforscht.

NOTCOT: Incase Bürotour

Man fragt sich ja hin und wieder schon mal, ob hinter der Marke, die man gerade so geil findet, auch coole Leute stecken. Nicht auszudenken, wenn man z.B. feststellen würde, dass der tolle Shop um die Ecke nur ein Marketingtestlabor von C&A ist. Ein bisschen ging’s mir gerade so als Andre (@abettertomorrow) mir gerade virtuell den Link zu einem Besuch von Notcots Jean Aw bei Incase rüberreichte. Aber schon der erste Blick reicht, um sich beruhigt zurück zu lehnen. Das Incase-Büro fällt ohne Probleme in die Kategorie “Darf ich bitte morgen bei euch anfangen?”

David McCandless erstellt großartige Informationsvisualisierungen, für sein Buch (The Visual Miscellaneum: A Colorful Guide to the World’s Most Consequential Trivia) und für sein Blog (Information is Beautiful). Und da ihr Pyramiden zu eurem Medienverhalten ja zu mögen scheint, konnte ich euch diese hier nicht vorenthalten, wobei diese ja so ein bisschen in die Kategorie “Wahrheit, die weh tut” fällt. Davids Gedanke zu der Grafik könnt ihr hier lesen.
