Freshman Tierra Ruffin-Pratt led five Tar Heels in double figures as No. 5 North Carolina topped Division II Francis Marion, 105-64, Thursday night at the Dean E. Smith Center. Ruffin-Pratt added seven rebounds, four steals and three assists on the night for UNC, which will play its second and final exhibition Nov. 10 against Carson-Newman. FMU's Shannon Singleton-Bates had a game-high 28 points to lead the Patroits.

Breland, the team's top returning scorer, was diagnosed this summer with Hodgkin's lymphoma.

UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell says Jessica Breland's Hodgkin's lymphoma has gone into remission, though it's still unclear whether the senior will be able to play this season. Hatchell said Wednesday that Breland finished her five-month course of chemotherapy last week and will have a scan next week that could determine whether she needs additional treatments. However, Hatchell says she is still leaning toward redshirting Breland this year.

For the second consecutive year, the North Carolina women’s basketball team was selected to win the Atlantic Coast Conference by a vote of the Blue Ribbon Panel, announced Monday by the league office. The panel, a contingent of national and local media, as well as school representatives, gave 30 of 45 first-place votes to the Tar Heels.

The battle UNC senior forward Jessica Breland has waged against Hodgkin's lymphoma during the last five months overshadows anything that will take place on the 94-foot hardwood floors in arenas across the ACC this season. Breland's status for the season is uncertain, but that didn't prevent Breland from being named to the preseason All-ACC team.

The fifth annual Reece Holbrook Golf Classic and Sports Auction presented by Roy and Wanda Williams is set for Oct. 4 and 5, with a portion of this year's proceeds going toward Jessica Breland's treatment for Hodgkin's disease at UNC Hospitals. The auction, which features one-of-a-kind Carolina memorabilia, is set for Oct. 4 at the Peebles Practice Gym, while the golf tournament will be held Oct. 5 at the UNC Finley and Chapel Hill Country Club golf courses.

A total of 274 UNC student-athletes have been named to the 2008-09 ACC Academic Honor Roll, announced recently. The 53rd-annual edition of the list includes a record 2,772 student-athletes from the 12 conference schools. As a way of giving back to her communities in western NC and in Chapel Hill after a cancer scare nine years ago, the head coach of the North Carolina women's basketball team allows anyone to come out and pick her blueberries.
