Another ‘dialogue’ documentary

Following the response on Talking Faith highlighting the relevance of dialogue in interfaith and intercultural relations, the second documentary film “Hearing the Other Side” is now available focusing on Muslim immigrant youth and their encounter with media and identity issues following the assassination of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh in the Netherlands. The film narrates the experiences of young people and women, and how they are affected by media sensationalism and Islamophopic hype created by some conservative Dutch politicians. What is it that brings the churches and mosques together to counter the stereotypes and challenge the biases attached to faith and cultural identities. To answer this, Hearing the Other Side initiates dialogue by providing an opportunity to hear the voices, not much prominent in the media. SAFMA National Documentary Festival

Talking Faith has been screened at the National Documentary Festival by SAFMA (South Asian Free Media Association) on 15 December, 09. The event took place at the South Asian Media Centre in Lahore, and the screening was held under the category of “People, and Peace”. The screening was followed by the responses from the panelists and an open house discussion. Among the respondents were Munu Bhai, President Free Media Foundation and Shirin Pasha, Head Film and TV department at the National College of Arts in Lahore. Other documentaries being screened at the festival were mostly independent ventures on social and political issues including Battle for Pakistan by Maheen Zia, Mukhtar Mai by Beena Sarwar, Freedom’s Sisters by Maham Nabi Malik, and another documentary on the rights of religious minorities, In the Name of Faith by Naveed Naseem.

Screening at Payap University

Talking Faith screening in the Netherlands

Talking Faith was screened by a group of artists at the Villa Grijpsheer in the Hague on 3 June, 09 followed by a question and answer session with Naveen. The screening was being organised for invited audience from the artist’s community, and took place during the production of another documentary film Naveen is currently producing. This recent documentary project of hers will be exploring the impact of media on Dutch Muslim youth and the initiatives of dialogue in the Netherlands. The research for this film has been carried out with support from WCC – World Youth Programme and Interchurch Organisation for Development Cooperation (ICCO). The film will be made available in October, 09.

Telecast on Aag TV and screening in London

Talking Faith was recently broadcasted on Aag TV, a television channel for youth in Pakistan on 18 and 19 June, 09. The telecast was part of the National Short Film Competition organised by British High Commission, London International Documentary Festival (LIDF) and Geo Television Network. Talking Faith was one of the three films to be selected as part of this initiative called “filmmaking for social change”. The project was to support young and upcoming filmmakers addressing social issues by providing them airspace on national television with an extensive audience in the country. As a follow up to this, Talking Faith was also screened at LIDF in London along with other international documentaries on 1 April, 09. Talking Faith at Kara Film Festival this February !

Talking Faith will be screened at the 7th Karachi International Film Festival on 13th February 2009, 3 PM followed by Q & A at the Arts Council Auditorium in Karachi. This comes with huge efforts from the Kara Film Society, who has finally managed to hold this event after being postponed twice due to the political and security upheavals in the country.

Kara Film Festival from the past few years have been known for exhibiting the work of regional filmmakers along with the international talent. It has promoted the work of numerous filmmakers in the categories of short films, features, animations and documentaries. The currant Kara will be screening over 230 films including 120 short films, 60 documentaries and 50 feature films from 44 countries around the world.

Talking Faith will be one of the films addressing social justice issues, and the only one focusing on religious minorities and dialogue in Pakistan in the category of documentaries. To catch Talking Faith and other films, schedule and details are available on the festival website

Screening at FCCT, Thailand

Talking Faith was screened at Foreign Correspondence Club of Thailand (FCCT) on 5 February, 2008 in Bangkok. For five decades, the Foreign Correspondence Club of Thailand has played a vital role being Southeast Asia’s most active press club. The club advocates press freedom as a cornerstone of civil society in emerging democracies and is a vital venue for an open exchange of information. In FCCT’s Contemporary World Cinema Series several feature and documentary films on varied social and political issues had been screened. Talking Faith in Lahore

taken HD download The month of April is associated essentially with spring in Punjab, and Vasakh Film Festival pitched in quite befittingly to the feeling of festivity around. The event previously known as matteela film festival showed the best documentaries from all over South Asia, and Talking Faith was one of them.

Talking Faith was screened at Vasakh on 24 April at Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) Auditorium in Lahore, Pakistan. The evening commenced with a note from the organiser, and as the festival gained momentum, it managed to gather quite a number of audiences.

Talking Faith engaged the viewers and received astounding ovation from the spectators. The success of Talking Faith was how it reflected the issue of interreligious dialogue and diversity of Lahore, whilst telling the personal stories of individuals.
