Super recomendado!!!

"We held our breath across each bridge
Till we were blue;
But I wonder if I wished the same as you,
Like a ten-year-old pretending
Summer isn't really ending."

Thousands of miles and several time zones away down under, some time tonight, The Lucksmiths are going to play their last show ever. They will be sorely missed by us. Music To Hold Hands To is the second part of the fourth installment of our online compilation series and is also our little tribute to the lads of Melbourne.

Sleeve design by Connie Francis of Carnival Park/ Melody Style Apartment.

Volume 4b: Music To Hold Hands To (A Tribute To The Lucksmiths)

For 128 kbps, download here, or here, or here.
For 192 kbps, download here, or here, or here.

ALLMUSIC Swedish pop band Ray Wonder formed in Umea in the early '90s, comprising vocalist/guitarist Henrik Andersson (ex-Komeda), bassist Toft Stade (ex-Shredhead), drummer Per Helin (ex-Puffin), and guitarist Ludvig. It took the group two months to come up with an album's worth of material; Pele Henricsson (Stade's
stepfather) offered his studio for use, and the band recorded and mixed
their songs in two days. The band contemplated quitting until Helin
played the recordings for his friends at North of No South Records.
North of No South liked what they heard so much that they released it.
That album, Hurray, was released in 1994. Two EPs and a single predated their second full-length, 1996's Good Music. After another pair of singles, A New Kind of Love, was issued in 2000.

Retro dance music styles, ska, power pop and more surfaces in a high-speed blend on Good Music.
The blender is pushed to liquefy and the musical idioms are presented
as quickly as they are changed. The band has a half-dozen albums under
their belt. Their longevity and dedication shows in their level of
achievement. Ray Wonder offers a consistent, double-quick highly
practiced delivery along with a fine sense of how much they can get
away with. While they hurry us along on the trip, Ray Wonder makes sure
melody does not become a straggler left behind. Ray Wonder deserves
kudos for satisfying both their desire for speed and their nature as
adept pop craftsmen. [by Thomas Schulte]

ALLMUSIC Hunters & Collectors began their career by playing the pub scene in
Australia and from there the band slowly inflated into semi-stardom,
mainly in their homeland. Collected Works takes the best tracks
from the first ten years of the band's existence and lays them out in
chronological order, resulting in a wonderful compilation. The 15
tracks come from their self-titled album, The Jaws of Life, Human Frailty, Fate, and Ghost Nation, with "Lumps of Lead" stemming from the 1982 Pay Load
EP. H&C's dusty, basement dwelling sound shadows the band with
character, presenting them with an element of low-key personality that
sets them apart from other groups. Each song has a rough-edged savvy
surrounding it, either by the gritty guitar playing or the mournful
eagerness in Mark Seymour's
vocals. "January Rain" carries a desolate aura that hovers above the
entire tune, and "Carry Me" speaks volumes with its emanating bass riff
and building guitar. What makes this band shine is the ghost-like air
that drifts through their sound, which eventually becomes solidified by
the strength of their instruments. With heavy emphasis on concrete
guitar rhythms, balanced out by the creative application of horns,
H&C's music heightens slightly throughout the duration of each of
their songs. Collected Works doubles as a must-have for fans as well as a splendid intro into this underrated band. [by Mike DeGagne]

ALLMUSIC The Lucy Show's second full-length album caught the group in a time of
personnel crises. At this juncture, the band had dwindled to a duo, Rob VanDeven and Mark Bandola,
with assistance from various sidemen. Despite the membership
instability here, this album is a solid improvement over previous
releases. The influence of R.E.M. and the Cure
is extremely strong; all the songs here show clear touches of one or
both of these bands. A few selections, such as "Sun and Moon" and
"Melody," also utilize subtle '60s melodic twists and turns. Unusual,
slip-sliding chord progressions occur often ("View from the Outside" is
a good example), lending these songs added depth and appeal. "New
Message" features a solid, chunky drumbeat and an especially ringing
arrangement that is accentuated by use of crisscrossed high trumpet
lines. "Sojourn's End" has noticeable psychedelic touches and adds a
smidgen of harmonica to the mix. "Sad September" is a moody and lovely
acoustic guitar-dominated number with a hauntingly effective vocal. And
the synthesizer-based "Part of Me Now" is simultaneously pulsating and
expressive, one of the album's best songs. This overlooked release
deserves wider exposure and is well-worth hearing. [This edition of the
album includes bonus tracks, live cuts, demos and a video for "A
Million Things."] [by David Cleary]

ALLMUSIC After signing to Stiff, the Rumour made a clear attempt to redefine
themselves as a new wave band, incorporating quirky embellishments and
more atmospheric keyboards. They're still a pub-rock band at heart,
though, and the combination usually works quite well, at times making
for some truly inspired moments like "Emotional Traffic," which sounds
remarkably like a Nick Lowe song.

WIKIPEDIA Formed from around, and within, the Edinburgh indie-pop scene of the mid 1980's, Jesse Garon And The Desperadoes had a distinctive guitar-jangle sound with male and female vocals. The band took their name from Elvis Presley's stillborn twin brother, Jesse Garon Presley.

The original members were:

    * Andrew Tully - guitars/vocals
    * Angus McPake - bass guitar
    * Fran Schoppler - vocals
    * Margarita Vasquez-Ponte - drums
    * Kevin McMahon - guitars
    * Stuart Clarke - guitars

Tully and Vasquez-Ponte were also members of Rote Kapelle a band that was active from 1985-1988.

This initial line-up recorded the first two singles, "Splashing Along" and "The Rain Fell Down", on Narodnik Records. With the departure of McMahon and Clarke, Bruce Hopkins and John Robb were drafted in for third single, the "Billy The Whizz EP", these being replaced on a more permanent basis by Michael Kerr (of Meat Whiplash). Next release was a flexi-disc featuring the track "Hank Williams Is Dead" along with a track by The Fizzbombs, a side-project of Margarita and Angus, along with Ann Donald of The Shop Assistants. Moving to Velocity Records, the band released two more well-received singles, "The Adam Faith Experience" and "You'll Never Be That Young Again", followed by first album, "A Cabinet Of Curiosities", which collected the tracks released to date.

In 1989, Kerr left to join The Darling Buds, and the band returned in 1990 with single "Grand Hotel", a reference to the IRA bombing of Brighton's Grand Hotel, the venue for the Conservative Party conference. Tully described this as a 'fuck Thatcher and fuck the IRA for not killing her when they had the chance' song - the band never afraid to be controversial. The album "Nixon" followed, and in October 1990, they released their final single, the "Hold Me Now EP".

WIKIPEDIA Los Bunkers is an alternative rock/folk rock band, from Concepción, Chile, formed in 1999 by brothers Álvaro and Gonzalo López, Mauricio Basualto, and brothers Francisco and Mauricio Durán. They are well known in their country for their contemporary sounds of rock, based on sounds of the 60s, from bands like The Beatles, and also including sounds from their folk roots. They have released five studio albums, Los Bunkers (2001), Canción de lejos (2002), La Culpa (2003), Vida de perros (2005), Barrio estación (2008). This last is their first album to be released internationally. The group has a live album called simply En vivo (2007).

United initially by their common love for The Beatles, Los Bunkers have shown over the years a growing interest in the composition of Chilean folk roots, especially those working during the decade of the 60s the movement of the New Chilean Song. Between these two related and creative filter verses revelation valuable emotional debate his music, a rock of the past but undeniable bond developed with rigor and freshness, plus an exceptional flexibility that has allowed them to maintain a healthy pace of edits. Since the middle of 2000s, it is the Chilean rock group most active in Mexico.

ALLMUSIC Tuscadero's appealing jumble of junk culture and punk-pop might
occasionally come across as a bit too juvenile -- it's rather disarming
to hear twenty-somethings so nostalgic for their childhood -- but the
rush of sweet hooks and fuzzy guitars make The Pink Album a delight. Sure, the band's rough around the edges, especially since neither Melissa Farris or Margaret McCartney have particularly strong voices, but its amateurish edge is part of its appeal. The Pink Album
was originally released in a rushed, lo-fi edition on TeenBeat in 1994.
Two years later, the album was re-issued by Elektra in a remixed
version, boasting several re-recorded tracks. While the cleaner,
punchier sound may offend some indie purists, it actually makes the
record more fun. [by Stephen Thomas Erlewine]

ALLMUSIC Half String fall in with the fair number of American bands to be
heavily influenced by British shoegazing and dream pop in the mid-'90s
-- the band shares heavy sonic similarities with Pennsylvania's Ocean Blue (or California's Riverside), and shares their apparent influences from Ride, Lush, Chapterhouse, the Cocteau Twins and the countless other acts in the British dream pop scene. When one comes across an album like A Fascination with Heights,
which didn't make it too far beyond the band's roots in Arizona,
there's always the expectation that it will be an amateurish rehashing
of these influences. The surprise is that Half String's work ranks
right up there with the best of their predecessors', and like Ocean Blue, their American roots help them avoid some of the British scene's more flowery or overproduced tendencies. A Fascination with Heights
is well-written, beautifully focused and does such a good job of using
its dream-pop influences that it tends to sound more definitive than
derivative -- while its very independent roots kept it from receiving
much attention, it's certainly as worthy as many higher-profile
records. [by Nitsuh Abebe]

ALLMUSIC This is a must-have for any Boyracer fan who's having a difficult time
trying to collect their monstrous discography that spans over a decade.
Better yet, this is a must-have, period. Since 1990, Steward Anderson has fronted Boyracer's raw and energetic trademark of pop-punk that's equally complex, sentimental, and delicately crafted. Boyfuckingracer is a handy compilation that's treated as a best-of that also features a number of unreleased songs. Steward and company musically stand on their own -- perhaps somewhere loosely between Leatherface without the whisky-soaked Lemmy vocals and a sloppy version of Snuff. But as mentioned earlier, that's a loose description that probably doesn't do Boyracer any justice. [by Mike DaRonco]

ALLMUSIC Working hard to further their penchant for hashing together paisley
underground psychedelia and classic post-punk, Sad Lovers and Giants
followed their first two acclaimed singles with the hefty EP Epic Garden Music in fall 1982. With a delicious blend of gloomy guitar and bass infused with punch and verve that recalls early Cure,
and a sophisticated wordplay that was uniquely their own, the quintet
split the songs between seaside and countryside, between earth and air,
and inflected a little of each into the music. Absolutely cohesive and
completely on track, the songs on this set are slick and smooth. From
the opening "Echoplay" and the foggy "Clocktower Lodge," which walk a
quiet edge, to the pure pop of "Alice (Isn't Playing)" and the ominous
closer "Far From the Sea," which sounds as if vocalist Garce Allard
sang his part through a window outside the studio, each moment is a
masterpiece. And, though most of the songs maintain similar a tempo and
intensity, "Clint" snaps heads around, while "Lope" features a
sublimely off-kilter sax solo from David Wood.
It's an addition that brings the closing dregs of a traveling circus to
mind -- or, perhaps in a nod to the side's vibe, a closing seaside town
that has turned a woolen shoulder to November wind and rain. Sorely
overlooked outside of England, Sad Lovers and Giants may have been lost
in the wake of the post-punk generation's heroes, but they haven't been
forgotten. They remain a small pearl -- a gem of the ocean that birthed
them. [by Amy Hanson]

ALLMUSIC Bel Canto's first release remarkably shows the group already
well-established with their own blend of sounds into a new style, with
an assurance and elegance that might otherwise have only come after
many years of work together. From the many world musics that the band
uses to gloomier post-punk and more serene electronics, everything
fuses together excellently, with Drecker's
beautiful voice carrying all that comes before it. While she's not as
distinct or unique a singer at this point in her career as, say, Kate Bush or Liz Fraser of the Cocteau Twins,
her skills are nonetheless evident, including a fine ability to sing in
a variety of languages. Besides her native Norwegian, she tackles
Spanish and English with aplomb. A sense of Siouxsie and the Banshees' blend of play and unease characterizes much of White-Out Conditions
— the galloping, lyricless but not vocal-less "Agassiz" at once raises
a smile with its folk-dance drive; it is still just creepy and strange
enough. Perhaps the most striking sonic touches here are the almost
EBM-level percussion and synth bass interplays created on some songs.

"Dreaming Girl" has a forceful pulse which, when combined with the
crisp arrangements and Drecker's
more clipped singing, gives the piece a rougher edge, even with the
brief piano break. Other songs have a more explicitly melancholy feel,
such as the dark blue "Without You," but Drecker's
vocals retain a cool gentleness even with the most tearful of lyrics.
The title track, the album's sweeping highlight, is an exquisite blend
of electronic and acoustic instruments with a real sense of drama, as Drecker
sings a melodically complex lyric with a descending chorus. The final
chorus allows her voice to stand out even further from the music as it
fades away — an extremely fine touch. [by Ned Raggett]
Compilação feita por um amigo de Lima, Joel Felipe. Ele me enviou uma nova, Dinámico y Estático, e resolvi postar. Ótima seleção, super recomendado!

ALLMUSIC Somewhere between the delicate power pop of Shoes and the classy British pop of mid-period Jam sits the wonderful world of Squire. No, not Billy "The Stroke" Squier. This is Squire, the groovy mod trio fronted by Anthony Meynell,
one of pop music's unsung heroes. Spanning the years 1980-1984, this
exceptional compilation concentrates on the latter half of the band's
career, and contains almost their entire Get Smart album. By this point in the band's career, Meynell
had tired of the musical restrictions that the mod scene had thrust
upon him. Adding more overdubs in the studio (including a horn
section), Meynell created some of the brightest, most exhilarating, guitar-based pop music of the early '80s. Sidestepping such influences as the Who and the Kinks, and embracing Lennon's edge from the Beatles ("No Time Tomorrow"), and the bright, sunny vibe from the Monkees
("Standing In The Rain"), Squire did not create disposable pop, they
created timeless pop.

Many of these tracks could have been released in
the mid-'60s or even in the early '90s at the height of Brit-pop.
"Every Trick In The Book Of Love," "You're the One," "My Mind Goes
Round In Circles," "Girl On A Train," "Stop That Girl," and "Take A
Look" are nothing less than perfect pop songs. When Meynell puts down his pen and records a cover version (including Shoes' "Boys Don't Lie" and Big Star's
"September Gurls"), the results are nothing less than Squire-like.
Sadly, the only low point on this disc is the A-side of their fan
club-only final single, "The Young Idea," which, strangely enough, was
probably considered a high point when first released! Mod and power pop
fans should keep their eyes peeled for this gem of a CD. It's worth the

ALLMUSIC Though difficult to find (it was seemingly in print for about 15
minutes), this CD combining Let's Active's first two releases, plus a
pair of rarities, is essential for all fans of the Southern pop
underground of the '80s. Mitch Easter, Sarah Romweber, and Faye Hunter
blended psychedelia, bubblegum, and jangly guitars in a way that
sounded alternately mysteriously dark and joyously giddy. The 1983 EP
is more the latter. Even the lost-love songs like "Every Word Means No"
and "Make Up With Me" are too adorable to resist. Easter
gets extra coolness points for deliberately mispronouncing the word
"anathema" to make it fit the meter in the former song, one of the
year's finest singles. All six songs are brilliantly catchy, with more
ear-grabbing hooks and production tricks per song than most entire
albums, and the entire EP is simply flawless, particularly the ghostly,
atmospheric "Edge of the World" and "Leader of Men."

Cypress,
from 1984, is the darker of the two records, with a thicker and even
more psychedelic haze obscuring even the handful of relatively upbeat
tracks. Even the catchiest songs here, like the single "Waters Part,"
have a draggy, druggy feel, and a sort of dispirited ennui hangs over
the album as a whole. (It's not surprising that Romweber and Hunter
left the band not very long after the album's release.) Still, it's an
amazingly engaging record, almost like a Southern new wave version of Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures. On this disc, combined with the sunnier pop pleasures of Afoot, Cypress
is that much more powerful and disquieting. This disc adds the
previously unreleased "Two Yous" and "Grey Scale," previously only
available on the U.K. vinyl pressing of Cypress. [by Stewart Mason]

ALLMUSIC Repercussion is very much of a piece with the debut, repeating much of the same formula that made Stands for Decibels
great -- terrific harmonies, winning melodies, and catchy hooks with
subtle quirks thrown into the mix. This time, they feature a fuller,
more polished sound, but the impact of the songs isn't diminished. Stamey left shortly after Repercussion to pursue a solo career.

Genre: Powerpop / Jangle Pop
Based In...: US
Label: IRS
Year: 1981
My Rate: 10/10

ALLMUSIC On their debut, the dB's combined a reverence for British pop and arty,
post-punk leanings that alternate between minimalism and a love of
quirky embellishment, odd sounds, and unexpected twists; Stands for Decibels
is clearly a collegiate pop experiment, but rarely is experimentation
so enjoyable and irresistibly catchy. Singing and songwriting duties
are shared equally by Chris Stamey and Peter Holsapple -- Stamey, more quirky and psychedelic-leaning with a winsome, pure-pop whine, is nicely balanced by Holsapple's
more earthy drawl and straightforward approach. The album stands not
only as a landmark power-pop album, but also as a prototype for much of
the Southern jangle that would follow. [Stands for Decibels remained criminally unavailable in the U.S. for years. When IRS reissued it on CD in 1989, Holsapple's "Judy" was added as a bonus track.] - [by Chris Woodstra]

ALLMUSIC On their second album, Scritti Politti essentially was Green Gartside, who directed drummer Fred Maher, keyboardist David Gamson, and a multitude of studio musicians through a state-of-the-art, immaculately constructed set of catchy synth pop on Cupid & Psyche 85. The results are as impressive as Songs to Remember and produced the hit singles "Perfect Way" and "Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin)." [by Stephen Thomas Erlewine]
