Hi All,

First post after only lengthy periods viewing and soaking in information.

I am a 29 year old male currently 2 years into my 3 of the FdSc Construction Management course, where I am then looking to join onto the last 2 years of the Quantity Surveying BSc.

The aim eventually is to then do my APC to become chartered in Quantity Surveying.

I just want to gather the thoughts and opinions on the differences, pros and cons and overall view of 'Contractor QS' vs 'PQS' (construction consultancy) and which is best on helping obtain the APC and is there difficulties in switching between the two later on in your career?

I'm not going to say which I'm currently involved for now either
Thanks for reading, looking forward to gathering some views and opinions!

I wondered if there were actual bricks manufactured to create such structures?

If the joints need to be this wide what's the best mix of sand p/s, g/p,lime and cement to use?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello Building Engineers

I am preparing the construction drawings of an extension where the architect has drawn the mullions between a door and window as too small. The openings are 5600mm and 2340 mm and, according to the Approved Document A - Diagram 14, the mullions should be (5600+2340)/6 = 1323 mm. The architect requires the mullion to be 890 mm wide.

The owners have stated that they do not want to reduce the opening sizes or introduce internal piers so I have to design the mullion. I shall use BS 5628.

I am assuming that I should check the mullion as if it were a pier with loads applied under the lintels and a horizontal force applied where the mullion may crack. Seems too simple and I cannot see where the requirement of width-of-openings / 6 was derived.

Has any one any experience in checking a mullion, please?

Hi everyone
I have a situation whereby Im looking to reuse an existing foul water drain to now take soil waste from a new upstairs bathroom at the head of a new drain we are removing the gulley and connecting SVP via a slow bend to the existing v/clay pipe, however on exposing the drain we found its only 150mm from the crown to GL falling to about 250mm at the IC (crown) and incased in concrete for protection so its only shallow set up (that length of exstg drain is about 8ft) this drainage was put in over 20 year ago and has BRegs approval as it was part of a rear bathroom extension, what Im wondering is what are my options to comply with BRegs as I cant go any or much deeper without lowering the IC?.
Just to add to this could someone confirm that if work of this scope was carried out without BC involvement and subsequent approval then it would invalidate the owners house insurance.
Any advice would be much appreciated

I am a newbie here and thought this would be a great platform to kindly ask any QS's out there with a spare 10 minutes to complete a survey which is assisting my research forming my dissertation project.

I am currently in my final year of my degree, BSc Quantity Surveying Consultancy at Kingston University.

The dissertation topic regards the Quantity Surveying profession and BIM. My general hypothesis is that Quantity Surveyors are not adopting BIM with the greatest of enthusiasm and thus are falling behind many other construction disciplines. The survey is trying to ascertain QS's perceptions/thoughts/attitudes/usage towards BIM and establish the main barriers of BIM adoption.

A link to the questionnaire is as follows:
We've just moved to a ground floor flat in a small 1960s block. After a week the kitchen started smelling really strongly of cigarettes - the windows have been shut so it isn't cigarette fumes drifting in from outside the window. I'm sure it is coming through the adjoining internal wall with my neighbour next door - An old lady who smokes quite heavily.

My housing association aren't helping. They say its a solid wall and there's no way cigarette smoke can leak through the adjoining wall.

The plasterwork on the wall has been damaged where the smoke smells strongest. This was where some electricity cables had been installed. And further down there are 2 old rusty pipes that are exposed from inside the wall on ground level.

Is this shared ducting? Is this why the neighbours fag smells are coming through the wall?

I tried to upload some pics as attachments. I click attachments from file, add them and update but its not working
