The business tablet has a sturdy aluminum shell that houses a 10.1-inch display. Boasting a pixel resolution of 1280×1800, the display has an IPS panel and is protected by Gorilla Glass 2. HP has said that the specific resolution of the tablet is intended for the use of conventional business applications.

The tablet weighs 1.5 pounds with a thickness of about 9.2 mm, making it a light yet well-built device. The right-hand side edge has the volume buttons. The speakers and the docking connector are at the bottom and the headphone jack, rotation lock and the power button are at the top. According to HP, the ElitePad 900’s battery should be able to last about ten hours.

Concealed at the back is a microSD card slot and another slot for 3G or 4G SIM cards. The cameras are placed both at the front and the back of the tablet. While the outward facing rear camera has auto-focus, flash and an 8-megapixel sensor, the video call camera that faces the user supports a resolution of 1080p.

HP has also developed a range of accessories to complement the ElitePad 900. The connector on the tablet supports a whole range of adapters including a USB port, SD card reader, Gigabit Ethernet, VGA, line out and HDMI. These connectivity options are also available through the ElitePad’s docking station which in turn can be paired off with a wireless keyboard. The docking station is heavy and sits steadily on the table not allowing the heavy cables to topple it over. Also available is the HP executive tablet pen with which users can write on the tablet in their handwriting and subsequently convert the notes to typed text.

Alternatively, a bunch of unique ‘Smart Jackets’ have been created by HP especially for the ElitePad 900. These are basically faux cases that add immense functionality to the tablet by providing extra features. One of the jackets has HDMI, two USB 2.0 ports and an SD card slot. It also features a slot where you can place a second battery thereby boosting the battery life of your tablet by up to twenty hours. The Productivity Jacket packs in a keyboard in addition to a card reader and USB ports. Although the jackets end up adding weight and thickness to the tablet they are nonetheless highly functional. These jackets don’t have to be removed if you decide to also use the docking station.

An Overview of the Tablet

Dell XPS 10 feels as rich and as light as a high-end and expensive Android tablet. The display is extremely crisp and bright. The display sometimes gives the feeling that it is far brighter than many other Android tablets in the market. However, the size of the screen is slightly small as the bezel parts occupy more space.

There is a start button to begin the Windows operating system, right at the bottom of the tablet. The button has the same function as that in the keyboard’s start button and this takes you back to the Start menu.

The hybrid device (one that feels like a laptop as well as a tablet) feels great both in its tablet form and its clamshell form. However the machine looks odd when it is closed. It rather gives the appearance of a netbook.

There is a camera on the rear side whose exact specifications are not clear. But one can safely assume that it is powered by an impressive megapixel reading for a tablet of its class. So it’s an interesting wait to know how well Dell will price the little device.

Our Verdict

The release date of Dell XPS is expected to be around the end of October along with the release of Window 8. The device is very impressive on the outlook and promises to be a great buying option for Christmas. Not all tablets have lived up to the expectation of its fans. Only a handful of them made it big. It would be interesting to see how this one announces itself and fights the battle out.

The iPad 3 may look the same as its predecessor, but there’s no sense fixing something that ain’t broke. Besides, it’s hard to complain about something that oozes quality, from the materials to the superior construction. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 is thinner and lighter than the iPad. And while its matte plastic rear provides a good grip, the Galaxy Tab feels plasticky and lacks the iPad’s premium vibe.

So while the Galaxy Tab doesn’t last nearly as long, we prefer it over the iPad 3’s literally hot power source, which can get as warm as 116 degrees. Worse, the iPad 3 takes forever to charge and you can’t use it while it’s charging or it won’t store any power.

Verdict

The iPad 3 leads the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 in almost every category, so it’s obviously the better choice, bad battery notwithstanding.
