<itunes:summary>Welcome to the fourth serialized PDF installment of J.C. Hutchins' 7th Son: Descent, a high-tech thriller novel.#160; In 7th Son, human cloning isn't near -- it's already here.

If this is your first exposure to our free serialization of 7th Son, you can easily catch up by experiencing part one, part two and part three. You can also dive in right away, thanks to...

THE STORY SO FAR: Yesterday, seven men were kidnapped and brought to a secret government science facility. There, they discovered that they were unwitting human clones, identical in flesh and childhood memories. Their creators assembled them to stop the man behind the recent assassination of the U.S. president: a psychopath code-named John Alpha ... the very man they were cloned from years ago.

John, Kilroy2.0, Father Thomas and the other "Beta Clones" were told that Alpha's plans for chaos were just beginning, and he had terrifying technologies at his disposal that permit him to record and implant human memories into anyone. Further, he abducted Dania Sheridan, the woman the clones remember as their mother ... and left a clue for them to find him.

Check out the fourth serialized installment below. If you enjoy the experience, support the book by purchasing a copy at Amazon, Barnes #38; Noble or Borders, or printing this PDF order form and presenting it at your favorite bookstore. You can learn more about the book at J.C.'s site.

Note from Summer: Sean, which Writer's Exchange did you submit to? There are hundreds of entries using that moniker in Google, and none of them seem to be a publisher or other paying market. Use the Contact Form to get back to us with more details!

Interview: Cherie Priest joins Mike and Mike to talk her latest book, Boneshaker. It's steampunk during wartime, with zombies and airship pirates -- how can you go wrong?

If you want more from this universe, you won't have long to wait! A novella is due out soon from Subterranean Press, and the sequel, Dreadnought, is due out from Tor next year, and it includes a steampunk Texas Ranger. There is one more story planned in this setting after that, but we shall have to wait for it!

These seven "John Michael Smiths" were unwitting participants in a human cloning experiment. Each man -- carpenter John, demented hacker Kilroy2.0, marine Michael and the others -- were brought here because their creators identified the man behind the president's assassination. It's the man they were cloned from -- the man whose childhood memories they all share -- a ruthless psychopath code-named "John Alpha."

As the clones wrestle with these revelations, the Project 7th Son staffers promise to reveal even more about their extraordinary origins....

Check out the third serialized installment below. If you enjoy the experience, support the book by purchasing a copy at Amazon, Barnes #38; Noble or Borders, or printing this PDF order form and presenting it at your favorite bookstore. You can learn more about the book at J.C.'s site.

Discussion: Today, Mike Stackpole, referring to a recent Publisher's Weekly column, has a bone to pick with some of the hype around Cory Doctorow's expertise as a free digital media evangelist, specifically the lack of numbers supporting the fact that the free ebook giveaways do indeed increase the print sales, and the flaw in the definition of terms about Cory's most recent free vs pay experiment.

Mike Stackpole has also blogged about this on his website:

Interview: Tom Lloyd, author of the "Twilight Reign" series, joins Mike and Mike to talk about the latest book in the series, The Grave Thief.

Tom tells about how this story turned into 5 volumes, discovering the story along the way, and standing at the starting gate, staring at the mountain that is the start of a 200,000 word novel waiting to be written, and of course, the plethora of new story ideas that just won't leave a writer be.

<itunes:summary>Welcome to the second serialized installment of J.C. Hutchins' SF thriller novel 7th Son: Descent. To celebrate the Oct. 27 release of the book, J.C. is releasing Descent in several free serialized formats: PDF, blog text, and audio. "Cover to Cover" is distributing the PDF version of the novel in ten weekly installments.

In the last serialized episode, U.S. president Hank "Gator" Griffin was assassinated by a four-year-old boy during a stumping rally in Kentucky. The child died not long after, offering no clues for his murderous motives.

Two weeks later, seven strangers were ripped from their normal lives on the same day, kidnapped by mysterious government agents, and brought to a "beyond Top Secret" facility. Locked in the same room, these seven men realized that, despite slight variations in their appearance, they all appeared to be the same man. Are they brothers? Each remembers being an only child.

The men, however, have very different personalities and skills:

John, a blue-collar DIY type, and musician
Michael, a determined USMC captain
Jay, a timid field agent for the United Nations
Father Thomas, a Catholic priest
Dr. Mike, a smug criminal profiler
Kilroy2.0, a demented, messianic computer hacker

Check out the second serialized installment of 7th Son here.

<itunes:summary>The president of the United States is dead. He was murdered in the morning sunlight by a four-year-old boy...

Those are the opening lines of J.C. Hutchins' sci-fi thriller novel 7th Son: Descent, which will be released in North American bookstores on Oct. 27.

When dozens of publishing pros rejected 7th Son in 2005, J.C. reckoned the book would never be published. But convinced the story he'd told was worth sharing, he took to the "podwaves" in 2006 and released 7th Son: Descent as a free serialized podcast novel.

The story -- a modern-day tale about human cloning, memory recording, government conspiracies and a villain bent on global chaos -- captured the imagination of tens of thousands of listeners. Thanks to the quality of the story and the evangelism of these fans, an editor at St. Martin's Press took notice of 7th
Son: Descent. The company offered to publish it. Hutchins is one of a few "podnovelists" who have landed such a deal with a major publisher.

To celebrate the Oct. 27 release of the book, J.C. is releasing the "print edition" of 7th Son: Descent in several serialized formats: PDF, blog text, and audio. We think J.C.'s personal story -- and the 7th Son novel -- is worthy of support, and are helping distribute the serialized PDF version of the novel at DragonPage.com for the next ten weeks.

What's the book about? Here's the jacket copy: As America reels from the bizarre presidential assassination committed by a child, seven men are abducted from their normal lives and delivered to a secret government facility. Each man has his own career, his own specialty. All are identical in appearance. The seven strangers were grown -- unwitting human clones -- as part of a project called 7th Son.

The government now wants something from these "John Michael Smiths." They share the flesh as well as the implanted memories of the psychopath responsible for the president's murder. The killer has bigger plans, and only these seven have the unique qualifications to track and stop him. But when their progenitor makes the battle personal, it becomes clear John Alpha may know the seven better than they know themselves...

Intrigued? Check out the first serialized installment of 7th Son at the link below. You can support the book by purchasing a copy at Amazon, Barnes #38; Noble or Borders, or printing this
PDF order form and presenting it at your favorite bookstore. You can
learn more about the book at J.C.'s site.

Read the first episode. It's a cool, cliffhanger-filled ride. We dig it, and we think you will too.

Discussion: Trampas asks about tackling a long-running series, from a writer’s perspective. Does the length and anticipated volume of story that lies ahead make the project too daunting to attempt? What might be some of the potential obstacles to getting such a huge project off the ground and published?

The EBM is essentially an ATM for books that automatically prints, binds, and trims, on demand at point of sale, perfect-bound, library-quality paperback books. These books, which have full color covers, are indistinguishable from other books sold in bookstores. A 300-page book can be produced in four minutes (serially, in three minutes) for a cost of consumables of a penny per page (the EBM can produce a book of up to 830 pages).

The print on demand possibilities have the guys tickled pink.

Interview: David Anthony Durham returns to the show to talk about his "Acacia" series, and the recently released second book in the series, The Other Lands.

This story picks up several years after the end of Acacia, focusing on the iron-fisted reign of young Queen Corinn, and the magical and political lengths she will go to in order to maintain her position and power.

David talks about using the second book as a bridge to the final book in the trilogy, and to explore part of the world that was only touched upon in the first book, and to explore depths in the characters affected by what they're discovering about their history and responsibility for a dark secret.

Also, congratulations to David on winning the 2009 John W. Campbell Award for Best New Science Fiction Writer!

Torr mentions the ebookwise store (a subsidiary of fictionwise) that caters to the RCA devices (Stackpole also recommends never signing an exclusive ebook deal unless the money makes it worth the risk); Yeti Stomper mentions new imprint Damnation Books and their scaled ebook pricing strategy; Monica asks if there's a central resource listing for dates and times of various conventions... other than Google, and Locus Magazine, the field is wide open.

Listener Review: Web Genii brings us a review of Black Ships by Jo Graham, from Orbit Books.

Discussion, continued: Sean lets the crew know about an electronic flight book, which is a color e-reader that pilots are using as in addition to containing their flight manuals, sectionals and maps.

MRM is tickled that current technology is getting closer to Star Trek TV every year, especially when seeking out interesting ways to use the Skype App on the iTouch.

The guys also touch on the broader availability and accessibility of books to readers and reviewers who aren't "professional" reviewers, and how the Internet is shifting how readers are looking for more content to read while waiting for the next volume of their favorite series, or just more books that feed the type of story they prefer to read.

Listener Review: Web Genii brings us an overview and review of FastForward 2 edited by Lou Anders

Interview: Rob Sawyer joins to mainly talk about the differences between writing for television and film, and writing for novels and short stories.

His novel, FlashForward, was picked up as a TV series, premiering on ABC-TV on this week, and he talks about the differences in pacing, writing style and the different needs that have to be met with a screenplay as compared to what's needed in a manuscript.

We talk about successful and not-so-successful adaptations, and how the writer should not take it upon themselves to direct the director or actors in the language of the screenplay. Reading older scripts and newer scripts can be a fascinating exercise in the evolution of scriptwriting and storytelling for film and television over the decades.

Rob recommends Writing for the TV Drama Series by Pamela Douglas for anyone interested in getting into writing for television, and Summer has been reading Write to TV: Out of Your Head and onto the Screen by Martie Cook, and Crafty TV Writing: Thinking Inside the Box by Alex Epstein.

Listener Review: Web Genii brings us an overview and review of Mortal Coils by Eric Nylund

Interview: Alma Alexander joins us this week to talk about her YA series "Worldweavers", and the third book in the trilogy, Cybermage.

The series is set in the Pacific Northwest, and makes good use of the mystical environment and the Native American influences found there, and has a strong young female protagonist, Thea Winthrop. From the Trickster, to Grandmother Spider, to incorporating a magical twist on Nikola Tesla and the Internet, the tales of the students at the Wandless Academy might be of interest to tweens and teens looking for something beyond Hogwarts.

Interview: Mike Carey joins the guys this week to talk about Dead Men's Boots, the latest installment in his Felix Castor series. He talks about how even though the initial three books in the series (since it was pitched as a threesome) were planned out ahead in detail, many threads and elements were introduced to take Felix's story through six novels so far.

Mike C also talks about Felix stories outside of the novels, and the possibilites of a comic series focused on either Felix or Juliet... and hopefully for the fans of these characters, those possibilities can come to pass!

He also talks about the comic lines he's still working on -- X-Men Legacy, and The Unwritten -- and work on a movie, and tells us about the story line behind The Unwritten, which was inspired by the autobiography of Christopher Robin Milne, and blurs the lines between reality and fiction.

Discussion: Mike Stackpole has a followup to the story earlier this year that Random House would be cutting royalties for electronic books from 50% down to 25%, and that there's a big fight about that cut currently going on in the UK. The refusal to accept the cut has apparently been put forth as a deal breaker for many publishers and authors, and the reasons why that have been put forth are not making sense to many of the people asking "why, and why now".

Listener Review: Tim Low brings us a review of The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie (House, Black Adder). It was published in 1998, but there might be a sequel scheduled to come out in September 2009, The Paper Soldier.

Discussion: Are some of the new technologies for ebooks and electronic reading really starting to gain traction, or are they merely still just shiny and new? Kindles, Sony Readers, iTunes Apps, and more to come...

What about the technology of communication and how it's changed the human experience over the past several hundred years? Historical methods of communication compared to current methods, and the speculative methods used in fantasy and in science fiction, and space opera... is communication done too fast for realistic story telling these days?

Discusssion: Mike Stackpole discusses his first experience being BoingBoinged, from a story about his talks at Origins, which led to the essays he'd written over at StormWolf.com about how publishers will not be leading the way into the digital future.

This leads into arguing about the recent fallacious assupmtions by several publishers to cancel the e-book editions of Dan Brown's newest, The Lost Symbol, because of the fear that it would undercut hardcover sales, and lots more discussion about what the future might look like.

Interview: David Weber joins Michael and Michael to chat about his latest book, By Heresies Distresssed, the third volume in his Safehold series, following Off Armageddon Reef and By Schism Rent Asunder.

In addition to giving an overview of the Safehold series, David talks about his writing process, and how switching between series provides a greater jumpstart for his creative batteries, keeping the different universes fresh for him.

David talks about having to relearn how to craft his books after severely breaking his right wrist, and how learning and training the voice recognition software, and having to talk to create his manuscripts has changed how much he can work and also how he approaches writing his books (especially in terms of scheduling, planning and revising).

He also expresses his affection for Baen Books for it's electronic library and online offerings, and its Free Library Project.

Discusion: Michael and Michael talk about how to know when your work is truly polished enough to go to print and be released to the consuming public. Mike M talks about his first experience, and admits that he did everything wrong the first time around; Mike S reminds folks to exercise due diligence and do your research into the people and firms offering to help you "get your book in stores". Remember, reputable agents will always fully disclose their clients and sales. Reputable editors and publishers will not ask you for money up front to get your book published.

Mike S relays the results from a survey of authors websites. The top 3 things that bring traffic and return visitors to author websites are: personal or inside info; games and contests; and freebie bonus or sample content.
