It’s been the most gorgeous few days in Washington I’ve seen in a long time. The sun’s been out, we’ve been in the 60′s, 70′s, and 80′s for the last few days, and expect a couple more glorious ones! I may live here, but that doesn’t mean I enjoy the rain any more than the average person. All this nice weather makes me realize how unprepared I am for summer. It’s not quite my dad’s birthday yet, but as everyone else is likely focusing on Mother’s Day, I thought I’d take this time to focus on my dad. He’s one of those kinds of guys you either completely love or completely hate. He does whatever he can to make sure his family is taken care of (whether you want him to or not – haha). He’s got a generous heart and he’s cultured in a lot. He’s risen very high in life and worked his way there every step. We don’t always agree, or even talk to each other, but he’ll always be my dad and I’ll always love him. Happy birthday, Dad!

Starbucks adds a domed cup

I don’t exactly live under a rock here, but I’m just now learning about Starbucks’ domed reusable cups (so your whippped topping doesn’t get all smooshed under your reusable flat lid).

I suggested this a couple years ago to a Starbucks store manager when they first came out with their reusable cups. “Genius!”, I thought. A reusable cup sporting my favorite coffee in it! I vowed to get one. But at that time, I was fancying a cold drink (White Chocolate Mocha w/ whip) and was disappointed to learn there was no room for my fancy whipped topping. I started to feel wishy-washy about getting a reusable cup. What if I wanted to have a hot drink? What if I wanted a cold one? What if I wanted to change my drink order each time I went in (which is something I often do)? A couple years later, I finally did (I stopped drinking coffee for a while). I got a reusable cup after I talked to a Starbucks employee and they assured me I could use the same cup for hot and cold. This morning, what did I see on the store shelf at my local Starbucks? A domed lid for a reusable cup. The heavens opened up and the rays of the holy one shone down on me. It’s like I had suggested it or something! Oh wait. I had.

Turns out, a year and a half ago, Starbucks asked their loyal blog customers what they should add to their merchandise. Shockingly, they suggested the same thing I had. Well, damn. They’ve had this freaking thing since the end of 2010. How long it’s been in stores, I have no idea as this is the first I’ve seen it. But it’s been available online since 2010.

I still take full credit for making the suggestion in early 2010.

You read that right – today is Hanson Day. Remember these guys?

They are still my favorite band – to this day. If you’ve been reading my blog for any period of time, I’m sure you knew that already. Today is the 15th year I have celebrated Hanson Day, which means I’ve been a fan for that long. WOW! A lot has changed. Not only have I grown up, gotten married, had kids and started a career, they have as well. They’re all married and have 8.5 kids between them (Taylor just announced they’re expecting their 5th child this year). They still tour, they celebrate Hanson Day each year in Oklahoma with their fans, and they’re still awesome. Their music has changed a lot in the last 15 years. Check them out NOW!

Holy moley! It’s been about a year since my last concert but I have the Jamaica trip coming up in January where I’ll see them. I’ve been a fanclub member ever since we received MOE cards (for you non-fans, it’s been a long time since those were issued). I will likely love them until the day I die. I try and attend at least 1 show each tour where they hit the pacific northwest (Portland, Seattle, Vancouver BC). Given that I’ve got kids and a husband and responsibilities of my own, I can’t go to as many shows as I’d like…but one a tour is enough for me I’ve been fortunate enough to have met them twice, along with take part in their charitable walks (walk barefoot with the band for 1 mile before a concert to raise awareness of poverty and aids in africa). So not only are they talented, but they are incredibly nice (as long as you’re not a crazy stalker fan, mind you) and charitable.

So your assignment today is to pick 1 Hanson song and listen to it on itunes. Any song you’d like. Whether it’s one you know (MMMBop, I’m sure) or one you don’t (some of my favorites include Georgia, Lost Without Each Other, and Crazy Beautiful). And if you’d like to laugh your ass off, check them out on youtube where they’ve got their truck-stop videos mixed in with their official music videos, among other things

You can browse through all the homemade and vintage goodies and create/share your own registry any time you want! Why stop at a wedding registry?? No one said you had to use it for a wedding, right? I just found out about an hour ago that one of my coworkers, Mike, passed away last night. He’s been on leave since November when he found out he had cancer. He was my carpool buddy, he made me feel welcome in my new position, he helped me out when I needed it. I am deeply saddened that he is not with us anymore and it really does make me stop and look at my life a bit. It’s hard to lose a loved one but I think it’s harder to lose a friend you didn’t realize you hardly knew. He lived right up the road from me and shared a 2 hour commute with me every day. He was always smiling and happy to help. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. Thank you, Mike, for always being so wonderful.

This weekend, my best friend’s family and my family joined forces and headed to Orcas Island, Washington…one of the most beautiful places I’ve been to in a long time. I mean, this is one of those places you head to and forget where you just came from. I felt awkward driving through the little towns in my SUV. Don’t get me wrong, it’s completely civilized and everything, but I should’ve been walking, biking, or riding a scooter. I can’t even begin to say what my favorite part of the trip was…watching the beautiful sunsets over the ocean from our cabin, hiking around Mt. Constitution, visiting Rosario Resort and learning about the mansion it used to be and the people who used to live there, shopping around town, or looking through the amazing art galleries. I ate local food I hadn’t tried and attempted to feel comfortable in a hot tub area where it was “clothing optional” (I wore a swimsuit, I’m not that brave). It was the best weekend I’ve had in a while and I can’t wait to go back!!
