Is your rig good enough? Is OnLive's? OnLive, the streaming game service that seeks to answer if the all-powerful cloud can run Crysis, is letting PC and Mac users test the system for themselves. The company has opened a public beta for the service today, seeking a wide range hardware configurations and broadband situations to apply.… The power of collaboration within unified communications

Showcase of ‘09 Festivals and Conferences

Some of the best festivals and conferences of the year are gone by now, but if we’d just want to judge them by their online presence we can do it from the comfort of our couch. There was some research involved in this article, you wouldn’t believe it how many of the biggest events in the world have so flat and unexciting websites. However, we’ve finally managed to find quite a few cool ones, so we wish you a pleasant and inspirational journey.
In this post we present some of the beautiful, original and inspirational web designs of festivals and conferences that took place or are going to take place this year. Please feel free to add links to further designs in the comments to this post!
Music Festivals
Bumbershoot Nice color scheme, trippy background, and a great all-in-one homepage experience with lots of info very well organized.

BonnarooThis one is kinda crowded but has some awesome visual effects that really bring the festival atmosphere to the web, displaying cool features, like a showcase with the best performances, recorded selection to watch online, and a radio station.

Parklife"A world of its own" seems to be not only the tagline of the festival but of the website too. Creative Flash use and a nifty 3D experience are the best features of this one.

BeachdownAnother innovative project, the Beachdown website has a horizontal style navigation system that scrolls the sticky notes with info, images and video.

BBC Radio 1’s Big WeekendA small website for a big weekend and a huge event. BBC Radio 1 has quite a nice microsite for this event, based on a dead simple layout and a cool color scheme.

PukkelpopThis one could hurt your eyes a bit, but I guess festivals like that could hurt your ears as well, so it makes sense. Other features - great community implementation and creative footer.

CreamfieldsAnother huge fest with a neat online presence. Creamfields has an interesting image scroller synchronized with internal banners and a fresh identity.

V FestivalOne of the most appreciated rock music festivals in the world, V pumped some interactivity into its website: there’s a strong community component, a Twitter scanning system, and a poll where the fans could decide which onstage collaboration would they like to see.

Flow FestivalThis is the proof that even for a big event you could keep a clean simple website with nothing more than great design.

Fremont OktoberfestSimple and effective design for this one. The bright colors and the smooth jQuery menu work very well for a beer outlet.

Mystery Land

Film & Art Festivals
Tati en FeteThis Flash website is the eye candy of the selection. The beautiful graphics, animation, and music make it a huge browsable universe of Jacques Tati.

Locarno Film Festival Slim website with no less than four menus and a few transparent areas where you can see the dominant background.

Festival de CannesVery compact multimedia homepage with lots of videos and pictures & a dynamic info scroller. Amazing usability!

The Animation ShowA well-organized blog with a proper look and feel for a great animation festival.

Edinburgh International FestivalAnother color masterpiece, the Edinburgh International Festival is as reach in website features as in live events. Great usability and innovative multimedia gallery in the Try Before You Buy section.

ColophonThe only minimalist entry in this roundup, the Colophon ‘09 website has everything an event for magazine enthusiasts should have: a cool simple look, a huge searchable directory of indie magazines, tons of interviews, and an exclusive social network for mag lovers.

Amsterdam Film ExperienceThis Flash based website is a fully functional video jukebox with an innovative navigation system. Be sure to double click the flipping buttons.

Darwin FestivalA program focused website organized like a calendar is a great idea for a festival. Plus, there’s a nice community platform well integrated with the website.

Ars ElectronicaA crisp webdesign with effective navigation, creative menu solution, and ajaxified sidebar.

The Media Festival Another fresh design with irregular header, live news updater, popping colors, and lots of badges. Nuff said.

Arts & IdeasCreative integration of the elements is the key factor here, combined with a great color scheme. Nice work!

Web Conferences & Design Events
London Digital WeekHere it’s all about the blurry moving images in the header and the bright colors used for the categories. Awesome effect!

An Event Apart

Arizona Entrepreneurship Conference

Future of Web Design

SXSW Big hype means big business and big business means great webdesign; at least in this case. The SXSW sports a clean website with a 16 bits meets Web 2.0 feel.

Next 09 A light website with a clean blog approach and an excellent video gallery.

The 99 Percent This is so slick - a webdesign masterpiece with the soul of a blog. The best part? A scrolling sidebar with news from around the web.

Freelance Camp Welcome to the army! The freelance army, that is! You have all you need - updates from the Captain, map with the camp location, a volunteering tool, and a community.

Tech AdventureFinally a one-page beauty! Great hand-made-eco-green look and awesome Twitter & Facebook integration.

Electrolux Design LabOne of the well-known events in the design world, EDL ‘09 has a nice landing page with a light graffiti approach crafted in Flash. You should turn off the music :)

Cannes Lions The Cannes Festival for advertising is a huge event with over 200 speakers, but with a modest and clean online presence. The best part - a slick login button in the upper right corner.

LDZIGN Very nice header with some motion involved, and a dynamic left aligned menu make it very clear and easy to use.

Corporate Twitter Toolbox: Twitter Tools for the Enterprise

Sudha Jamthe consults as Social Platform Strategist for PayPal X Platform and advises companies on innovation and building engaging communities. She blogs at coolastory.com and tweets as @sujamthe.Twitter is a great listening post for companies to monitor conversations related to their brand and engage with customers; and there are a variety of tools available to help groups and corporations tweet, collaborate, and generally manage their Twitter workflows. From tweeting and responding to customers to tracking the conversation and measuring the effectiveness of Twitter campaigns, there is a bevy of great tools out there for corporate tweeters. Finding the right Twitter applications is a challenge for social media managers, though, because new apps seem to spring up each day and they often have overlapping feature sets. This is a list of the top Twitter tools to manage your social media engagement with your customers. While it isn’t a comprehensive list of every available tool, it does cover the market leaders in each category. Let us know in the comments which other tools you use to manage your professional Twitter workflow.Preparing to Use Social MediaBefore you start pouring resources into Twitter, the first thing you should do is make sure that’s where your customers actually are. Marketers can use the Forrester Profile Calculator to generate technographic profiles of their customers and how they are likely to use social media. This profile shows how many of your targeted customers are likely to be active in social media and further categorizes customers based on whether they are likely to create original content like blog posts and tweets or if they are just likely to read blogs, forums, or watch videos, etc. Companies can use this information as a way to develop an optimal social media plan and allocate resources to respond to comments. Radian6 and Techrigy’s SM2 offer tools to help businesses find out where their customers are really talking. It’s important to figure out which social media tools your customers are using before you begin planning a social media campaign. Listen first before you engage. Both tools have comparable functionality and are widely used, though SM2 has a simpler pricing model and excellent data manipulation and graphing capability, while Radian6 offers the unique capability to track impressions for each conversation on Twitter or blogs. This is useful for measuring the social media impact of that conversation across the social graph of a specific tweeter or blogger. You can use these tools to identify who specifically are the social media influencers that talk about your brand, your industry, and your competition and you can plan to engage them on a more personal level. This is immensely useful for building evangelism programs by identifying your top customers active on social media. Managing Your Twitter PresenceHootsuite is a web-based corporate Twitter client used by companies like BET TV, the Discovery Channel, Dell, Disney, and FOX. It offers support for multiple users to tweet from one account, multi-profile support for one user to tweet from multiple Twitter accounts, and supports groups, and in-depth reporting on each tweeted link. Christine Jean Chambers, Interactive Producer and Online Media Planner for BET, uses Hootsuite to track which content is resonating with their audience. “For example, during the BET Awards ’09 in June, we took over the entire top 10 trending topics on Twitter, which is pretty extraordinary,” she said. “We monitored this flux of activity using Hootsuite and were able to gauge the success of the delivery of our content on Twitter precisely because of trackable links Hootsuite provides.” Grace Suriel of the Discovery Channel’s Marketing Communications team, meanwhile, uses Hootsuite to manage both the @AnimalPlanet Twitter account and her personal account. She uses Hootsuite to track all Animal Planet mentions as well as mentions of any of their key series. “It’s great seeing how many people click on the links I tweet,” she said, “When something is a hit, it’s very exciting. When a link doesn’t perform as well, I see it as a challenge from @AnimalPlanet’s followers to point them to content that is more interesting, engaging and current.” CoTweet is another web-based Twitter client built for the enterprise. It offers multi-user and multi-profile support, and integrated Bit.ly reporting. CoTweet is used by Jet Blue, Sun Microsystems, Starbucks, Whole Foods, and even Twitter itself.Sumaya Kazi, Senior Social Media Manager at Sun Microsystems, who manages the @sunmicrosystems account, says “We love the fact that CoTweet integrates with Bit.ly because it offers seamless reporting of each tweet posted via CoTweet in our Bit.ly account.” Jodi Brown, the Marketing & Interactive Director for Metro Canada, uses CoTweet because of its unique “Followup” feature. CoTweet has workflow built into it so you can tweet together as a team and assign a particular tweet to a particular team member for followup. On the desktop, the two most popular clients among enterprise users are probably TweetDeck and Seesmic Desktop. Both clients have multi-profile support, so enterprise tweeters can use them to manage both personal and company Twitter accounts. They don’t have multi-user support like CoTweet and HootSuite, but they are each ideal choices for single community managers that need a robust desktop client. Morgan Stanley of @JetBlue uses Seesmic Desktop because of its unique audible cues that are not present in other Twitter clients. This allows tweeters to set up different sounds when their brand is mentioned by a customer in an @reply vs. when it shows up in search. This can help users to prioritize when to interrupt other work to respond to a customer. On the iPhone, both Twittelator and Tweetie are worthwhile choices for enterprise tweeters because they both support multiple profiles. Each has similar feature sets, so are favorites among serious Twitter users. Essentially, it will come down to your comfort level with the UI that will be the deciding factor for which one you decide to use. Tracking the ConversationWhich tools you choose to track the Twitter conversation around your brand will depend on your goals and internal workflow. For example, if you use Twitter mainly to broadcast information about your brand you will have less of a need to respond to each tweet than if you plan to actively listen and provide support to your customers. Also internally, if your task is to collect daily statistics to share with multiple stakeholders you will want a tool that is very strong in reporting.For many companies, the built-in Twitter Search is robust enough for tracking brand mentions. Just enter your brand keywords or hashtags and watch tweets stream by in near real-time. The best part of Twitter search is that you can subscribe to an RSS feed of the search query results and respond to the tweets at different intervals of the day.Twitter Grader is very useful for tracking and measuring the influence of a specific Twitter user. This can come in handy when figuring out who are the top influential social media tweeters to update on a new product launch. This can also help in deciding whether to react to a negative brand conversation by checking the influence of those who tweeted it. Twazzup and Twitturly InView can both be used to track tweets using particular hashtags. This can be useful for tracking a hashtag campaign, and because both allow you to track how many tweets were made with each hashtag within a particular period of time, they’re useful for A/B testing your messaging or campaigns for different audience segments in different timezones to see what works more effectively.Let us know in the comments your experience with these Twitter tools and any others that you use.More Twitter resources from Mashable:- 5 Habits of Successful Executives on Twitter- Finding the Right “Brand Voice” On Twitter- Twitter Better: 20 Ways to Filter Your Tweets- 30+ More Ways to Create Twitter Groups- 40 of the Best Twitter Brands and the People Behind ThemReviews: HootSuite, Seesmic Desktop, TweetDeck, Twitter, tweetie, tweetzi Twitter SearchTags: cotweet, forrester, hootsuite, Lists, radian6, seesmic desktop, techrigy sm2, twazzup, tweetdeck, tweetie, twitter, twitter grader, twitterlator, twitturly

19 Firefox Add-ons For Designers

Are you a web designer who wishes you could do more in one handy spot instead of having multiple programs open? Well, thanks to the enormous Firefox add-on development community, your web browser can do almost everything for you.
We already covered Firefox add-ons for developers, but we couldn’t leave out the people that sit there and actually design what the developers have to build. These 19 add-ons will allow you to choose colors, measure dimensions, save screenshots and a whole lot more. Be warned that you should be selective in what add-ons you add to your browser due to the fact that the more you add, the slower it goes, but can you really resist very many of these?
Color Tools
ColorSuckr: ColorSuckr will pick the 12 most common colors out of an image and allow you to build a palette out of them.

ColorZilla: ColorZilla allows you to get a color reading from any point in your browser (not just the page), and you can adjust the color and paste it into other programs. Besides identifying colors, this add-on will also allow you to measure the distance between any two points, choose colors from pre-defined sets, get information on DOM elements and more.

FirePalette: FirePalette adds a color selection tool to Firebug’s CSS panel so you can easily pick CSS-compatible colors.

Palette Grabber: Palette Grabber allows you to make a color palette from any page you visit and then export it to Photoshop, Flash, PaintShop Pro, GIMP, Adobe Fireworks and Mac OS X Color Picker palette formats.

Measurement Tools
GridFox: You can draw a grid on top of any page and measure the column widths and other items.

MeasureIt: A quick and easy way to draw a ruler around a page element to see how big it is in pixels.

Pixel Perfect: Pixel Perfect allows designers to overlay their composition on top of the developer’s progress to see how far off elements are and what adjustments need to be made.

Miscellaneous Tools
Firebug: Firebug is generally associated with developers, but the layout and CSS inspectors can be quite handy.

Font Finder: This add-on will allow you to highlight any element in a page and see the CSS information for it. It’s especially handy if you want to identify a font.

View Dependencies: View Dependencies adds a tab to the “page info” so you can see a break down of all of the files associated with the page you just loaded along with their sizes. This can be a handy tool for determining what may be slowing down the load time.

Web Developer: Despite the name, Web Developer has many useful features for designers such as inspect, edit and disable CSS, as well as graphics. You can also use it to measure elements, re-size the browser, display CSS by media type and more.

Window Resizer: Allows you to quickly view a page at different screen resolutions. With just a click you can switch between 640×480, 800×600, 1024×768, 1280×800, 1280×1024 and 1600×1200.

Screenshot Tools
Abduction!: Abduction! allows you to save a portion of a page or save the entire page so you can show potential bugs to other people. You can also print or copy any images you saved.

FireShot: FireShot gives you numerous options for how to shoot your desired images of a partial or full page, which you can then email, save or upload to a free host.

Image Zoom: Choose the size you want to re-size an image to or reset auto scroll so you can use the scroll wheel on your mouse to zoom in and out on an image to check quality.

Picnik: This add-on will allow you to save an image of the page you are on and send it directly to the online image editor, Picnik.

Pixlr: You can edit and open images or screengrabs you’ve taken directly in the Pixlr online image editor.

Screengrab: You can grab the entire scrollable document, just the visible bit, or a draggable selection. Screengrab will even save just the contents of an individual frame as well as taking images of Flash and JavaScript elements.

Talon: Talon is an add-on by the popular Aviary.com that allows you to take screenshots that can be saved to your system, opened directly in the online Phoenix image editor, hosted on their site or copied it to the clipboard.

Can I Have Fries with That? What Clients Really Want

Part of having a successful and long-term relationship with any client is having an understanding of and being able to anticipate his or her individual needs. This can be difficult to do, especially when you’re working with a new client.
The good news is that regardless of the type of work you are doing, there are several core things that most clients want in a relationship with a service provider. If you can predict these fundamental needs, you are on your way to creating a mutually beneficial relationship with a lot of potential.
Here are some of the most basic elements that almost all clients want in a relationship.
Clients want to know that they are hiring the right person for the job.
In every successful relationship, the client has to have a certain level of trust that the provider has the necessary skills and experience needed to do the job and do it well.
Clients want to be respected.
Mutual respect is an essential element of every client/provider relationship. If one party is lacking in this area, the connection is doomed to fail.
Clients want to work with someone who is professional.
Being professional doesn’t just mean having the required skills and experience. Responsiveness, accountability, reputation and a number of other factors also play a part in being a professional.
Clients want to feel valued, listened to and communicated with.
As a client, there may be nothing worse than feeling like you’re in the dark on your own project. Clients need a contact person who is approachable, to be kept in the loop every step of the way, and to have their messages responded to promptly and completely.
Clients want to work with someone who is enthusiastic about the project.
Passion can be infectious. The more energized you are about the client’s work, the more the client will trust you and the easier it will be to work together.
Clients want to know what you’re going to do with their information.
Client data is a valuable asset, and your clients deserve to know how you are handling it, especially anything that may be considered sensitive (such as passwords). Your job is to protect this data and assure your client that it is safe in your hands.
Clients want to feel like they are getting their money’s worth.
The larger the investment a client feels he or she is making, the more important it to show that the work you are doing is worth the expense. You can do this by delivering what you promise and exceeding expectations every step of the way.
Each of these central needs leads to others that can facilitate any working relationship and make the relationship sustainable. If you start off on the right foot, you will find that it’s easy to meet your client’s needs, and you will be able to develop a well-choreographed give and take. If you miss the mark with what the client needs and wants, you may find yourself struggling for the life of the project.
What would you add to this list of fundamental client needs? What do you do to anticipate those needs when working with a client?

How to Use Operating System Styles in CSS

One of the lesser-known features of CSS2.1 is the ability to define fonts and colors that are in use by the underlying Operating System theme. This can be useful in situations when you require tighter OS integration, e.g. HTML help files, Adobe AIR or perhaps offline web applications.
Before we begin, there are a few caveats:

Do not rely on these properties working in all OS/browser combinations. If your application must work in Opera on BeOS, then I’d recommend you test it first!
The properties have been deprecated in CSS3 in favor of the appearance value type (although browser support is extremely limited at this time).
There is nothing to prevent the user defining unusual, clashing, or ugly color schemes in their OS. Pages will reflect their choices — not your designer’s.

System Fonts
System fonts are assigned using the ‘font’ property. Note that the family, size, and style are all assigned as appropriate, e.g.

body
{
font: caption;
}

The following font values are available. The ‘Example’ column shows the current font set by your OS.

Property
Description
Example

caption
Controls font (buttons, drop-downs, etc.)
ABC abc 123

icon
Icon label font
ABC abc 123

menu
Menu font
ABC abc 123

message-box
Dialog box font
ABC abc 123

small-caption
Small control labels
ABC abc 123

status-bar
Status bar font
ABC abc 123

System Colors
System colors can be assigned to to any property that expects a color value, e.g.

body
{
color: WindowText;
background-color: Window;
border: 2px solid ActiveBorder;
}

The following color values are available. They are shown in CamalCase for legibility, but any casing is valid. The ‘Example’ column shows the color set by your OS.
