World sugar prices may rise in H2

World sugar prices have been range-bound in the last three months or so in the wake of an estimated 8 million tonnes surplus of production over consumption for 2011-12.

While output is estimated at a record 173 mt, up 6 per cent from 163 mt in the previous year, consumption is forecast to rise by a modest 1.7 per cent or about 2.5 mt to 165.5 mt.

With the market clearly is surplus, it is least surprising that sugar futures prices have generally been under downward pressure, barring some transient movements otherwise.

British Sugar factory is breaking records for crystal production at the start of its centenary year

As average sugar levels hold steady at more than 18.5pc, the Cantley beet sugar factory, which was established in 1912, is producing record volumes of sugar, while the Bury St Edmunds factory is also performing well. Sugar beet grower Robert Hambidge recalled that exactly a year ago throughput at British Sugar’s four factories virtually collapsed as attempts were made to process severely frost-damaged beet.

Magellan apologizes for ethanol gas mistake

Gasoline distribution company Magellan Midstream Partners L.P. is apologizing for mistakenly providing gas stations in eastern Iowa with a blend containing a small amount of ethanol.

Magellan said Monday that gasoline containing an average ethanol content of 1 percent was delivered to stations in Iowa City and surrounding areas between Jan. 12 and Jan. 15.

SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota, January 24, 2012 (ENS) - An American ethanol producer and a Dutch life and materials sciences company Monday announced a joint venture to demonstrate commercial cellulosic bio-ethanol production and license the technology by 2013.

POET, LLC, one of the world's largest ethanol producers, based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Royal DSM, a sciences company based in Heerlen, The Netherlands, will each hold a 50 percent share in the joint venture, which will be headquartered in Sioux Falls.

India sugar mills face two further difficult years

India's sugar mills, already squeezed by rising cane costs, face two further years of hardship, raising the threat of "liquidity pressures", Fitch Ratings said.

The ratings agency said that India's standalone sugar mills, on which it has a "negative" outlook, have already seen their gross margins shrink to 2-3 rupees ($0.04-0.06) a kilogramme, thanks to rises in the state-decreed minimum price for cane, at a time of flagging values of the sweetener itself.

Poet abandons plan for pipeline to East Coast

Ethanol giant Poet has scuttled plans for a $4 billion pipeline that would have carried Midwestern ethanol to the East Coast, citing lack of government support.

The Sioux Falls-based company announced in 2009 that it was working with Magellan Midstream Partners to explore building an 1,800-mile pipeline from Davison County to Linden, N.J. The companies had chosen a route and a pipeline design and were raising money, Poet CEO Jeff Broin said. Plans called for ethanol to begin flowing sometime in 2014.

Khartoum – Federal Minister of Industry, Engineer Abdul Wahab Osman reiterated the intension to operate the While Nile Sugar Factory to start production next May to join the 2011/2012 season with an initial production of 150 thousand tonnes.

This came during the Minister's visit to the factory's site to follow-up the progress of the work.

It is worth noting that preparations were 90 percent complete as it is assumed that the factory work with its utmost production capacity next May.

Seaweed may well be an ideal plant to turn into biofuel. It grows in much of the two thirds of the planet that is underwater, so it wouldn't crowd out food crops the way corn for ethanol does

Pete Olson wants coal- and gas-based ethanol in fuel mandate

A bipartisan group of lawmakers, including three Texans, has introduced legislation that would allow natural gas and coal-based ethanol to compete alongside the corn-based variety for a U.S. renewable fuels mandate.

The Renewable Fuel Standard program sets an annual target for the total volume of renewable fuels in transportation fuels sold in the U.S., with additional targets in subcategories for biomass-based diesel, advanced biofuels and cellulosic fuels. The bill would make “domestic alternative fuels,” consisting of coal and natural gas-based ethanol, eligible to go toward the program’s total-renewable-fuel requirement.

These include environmental concerns, import substitution, rural employment, greater industrialisation. The world is groping for a deal on cutting greenhouse gases. We are some way from an agreement that will curtail emissions of carbon dioxide to levels that will limit global warming to just 2 degrees, but such a treaty will be in place within a very few years.

Traders are betting that the biggest sugar glut since 2007 will shrink in the next harvest, reversing expectations from six months ago and ending the largest decline in prices in a decade.

Raw sugar for March 2013 is trading at a premium of 3.3 percent to the July 2012 contract on ICE Futures U.S. in New York, compared with a 6.6 percent discount six months ago.

Some stories are too good to be true, and most likely this is one of those. An unnamed Ferrari dealer apparently offers a conversion that will allow the Ferrari FF to run on E85, resulting in a staggering 875bhp. The price tag for the whole package is just €1,500, which is a real bargain for the extra 225 horsepower.

E85 is an abbreviation for an ethanol fuel blend of up to 85% denatured ethanol fuel and 15% petrol. Engines fuelled by E85 tend to produce more power per unit of displacement than their gasoline counterparts.

Japan's Toyo to build 10,000 mt/year ethanol plant in Malaysia by Q2 2013

Japanese Toyo Engineering Co is to build a 10,000 mt/year industrial-grade ethanol plant in Johor Baru, Malaysia by Q2 2013, the company said in a statement Wednesday.

The plant, to be run by a joint venture comprising US firm Glycos Biotechnologies and Malaysian developer Bio-XCell, will have its capacity tripled to 30,000 mt/year by 2014, the statement said.

Sugar surplus likely to hit industry

PUNE: The International Sugar Organisation's estimate about 45 lakh tonne surplus in the global market is set to hit the Indian sugar industry, including Maharashtra.

The Indian Sugar Manufacturers' Association has said that the Indian sugar industry has so far produced 1.04 crore tonne of sugar till January 15 in the current season, which is around 17 lakh tonne more than the production in the same period in 2010. Sugar production during that year was 87.68 lakh tonne.

Sugar prices ruled weak on Tuesday as the market witnessed ample supply and steady local demand. Spot prices at Vashi wholesale market declined by Rs 5 for fair quality stocks while fine quality goods ruled unchanged.

At the Naka and Mill tender level, rates drop by Rs 10-20 a quintal. Volume was routine. Transport charges increased by Rs 5 a bag in last two days. The sentiment was steady, said traders.
