It was a goal that I set for 2012 and it’s already complete. So, I’m pretty happy about that.

I’m also a little bit terrified.

I feel like things just got real. Actually, they did, as I will not run around here with an LLC and continue to half-ass my online ventures.

Though nothing much has changed in regards to the current state of my business, I do feel a new obligation to make things happen.

Providing 100% of the initial capital investment, I will no longer dig into my own pockets to fund my investments.

I’ll use the funds in my business account.

What happens if I run out of money in the business account?

I’ll either get off of my ass and find ways to earn revenue or I will have to invest more money into my business to add to my capital.

I’ll be able to see why I am in that situation to begin with by reviewing my books.

Bookkeeping will now be part of my business as well.

So, again, nothing has really changed as far as the current state of my business goes.

But because I’ve decided to take my business seriously from a legal standpoint, I now feel like I have a personal obligation to do things “right.”

It also forces me to get serious about structure, direction and purpose for my business.

That’s quite motivating.

Are you taking your online business seriously?

It’s not very hard to start a blog.

With the right hosting package, you can literally have a brand new blog up in about 2 minutes.

What’s even easier than that is typing something up and publishing it to your blog.

Really, there are no set-in-stone guidelines that you have to follow.

You are the ruler of your domain (no pun intended).

So, there’s nothing wrong with whipping up a 1,000 word pile of crap and calling it a blog post.

Nothing at all.

It’s probably not best practice, but remember that you have every right to do so.

When Things Get Real

Most of you have higher standards than that, though.

You are concerned with your future success as a blogger and you don’t want to throw it away by building a reputation for doing low quality work.

You take pride in your creation and for as long as you have positive, beginner’s momentum, you keep pumping out content.

But then, there comes a time period much like a black hole, where new bloggers get sucked in never to be seen again.

It comes right after the momentum has died down and the reality of their true existence in the blogosphere becomes evident.

Your already small amount of traffic dwindles down to almost nothing.

You start to run out of ideas for what to write about.

Ultimately, you wonder if blogging is really worth it. You know… now that it actually takes real effort.

What do you do?

Unfortunately, I cannot give you a secret formula that will help you make it through these times.

If the formula exists, it’s already in you.

I just want to show you when it’s time to pull it out and put it to use.

When you don’t know what to write anymore, it’s time.

When you start to feel like writing is becoming a chore, it’s time.

When you go a day or two without even visiting your own blog (just to admire it), it’s time.

This formula is more like a mindset, to be honest.

It’s not one that you will need to have all the time. It’s a special mindset that’s reserved for special situations like this one.

The purpose of this mindset is be the push you need when you have absolutely no other reason to push.

In a way, it’s much like Nike’s slogan, “Just Do It.”

No questions ask. No explanation needed.

Just do it.

I can’t tell you why you should do it… especially if you don’t even know.

I can’t tell you how to do it, especially if you’ve already shown that you don’t have a rhyme or reason for doing it in the first place.

All I can tell you is that you have a blog.

You have a blog and you are in complete control of how content gets published to it.

Just Do It

So, when the happy days are over and things aren’t fun anymore…

When the possibility of your blog never becoming anything more than an abandoned website becomes more powerful than your thoughts of unlimited success…

When you start to wonder who would miss you anyway…

That’s when it’s time to just do it.

Log into your dashboard.

Open up that “wissy wig” (What You See Is What You Get) editor.

Start writing.

That’s what I just did…

Don’t we all.

As new bloggers, we are so obsessed with traffic that we find ourselves staring at the numbers all day long.

Seriously… what is going to change from 2pm to 2:15pm in Google Analytics?

Not enough to worry about.

Here’s the deal…

Calling yourself a blogger, but being terribly obsessed with traffic is like calling your organization a not-for-profit but only being concerned with money.

Put Traffic in its Place

I won’t sit here and act like I don’t care about traffic. Of course I do.

I even write posts about how to get more of it.

But listen…

You didn’t become a blogger to get traffic.

You became a blogger to blog… to write… to express your opinions about things.

That comes first.

If your blog itself doesn’t get the attention from you that it deserves, all the traffic in the world won’t make people take action when they land on your site.

So, you have to understand what deserves your focus first. It’s not the traffic statistics.

It’s your content.

Put Social Networking in its Place

Oh, what I would give to be the guy with 100,000 Twitter followers.

That would be nice, huh?

So nice that you’ll spend more time trying to get people to follow you on Twitter than you will on your own creation?

I think not.

A few days ago, I listened to Srinivas Rao interview Julien Smith on BlogCastFM.com.

Julien talked about how he jumped from social network to social network because he liked being on them early enough to be part of the growth.

He mentioned how you’re a fool if you think you’ll quickly build a massive following just because you created a profile.

He suggests building a loyal following first, and then taking your following to your brand new business page on the social networks.

Pasting HTML code for a Facebook widget in your sidebar that displays your 18 followers makes no sense.

That turns people off.

Build your following first. What’s the best way to do that? Through your blog!

Turn your loyal readers into your Facebook fans all at once.

How do you get readers in the first place?

Once again, concentrate on your blog.

Get Your Priorities Straight

Tell me, do you consider your time to be an asset?

You can spend it however you want to; even in ways that help you grow and possibly even bring you money.

So, wouldn’t it make sense to spend your time in a manner that brings you the highest possible return on investment?

Of course it makes sense.

Now, if you have the option to spend your time creating epic content or browsing through Google Analytics, which one would you do?

I hope the first option.

Spend time doing things that matter.

When the Statistics Matter

Again, I’m not saying that statistics have no place. They most definitely do.

There are ways to view your stats without wasting your time, though. Here are a few.

Pick a day of the week or month to view your stats

Usually, I view mine on Sundays. When I set a schedule for viewing my statistics, it helps me to be more focused when I do. I’m not just poking around looking for the highest figure.

It also gives me a better view of my growth (or lack thereof). Viewing weekly provides a better view of the big picture. It’s much like losing weight. The day to day difference seems non-existent.

Weekly or monthly observations provide a much better picture of growth.

View your stats with a goal in mind

Sure, bigger is better. Everyone likes bigger. But what are your goals?

How many people do you want to have you in their circles on Google+? Simply sitting on the sidelines watching the change is pointless.

Set goals for your statistics and visit those statistics to measure your progress.

Analyze your content statistics and see which pages and posts earn the most traffic

Figure out why they earn the most traffic and duplicate that criteria on other posts and pages.

Statistics are for more than just showing you how many people interact with you and your site. It will also tell you a lot about those people. Once you learn what they want and what their habits are, imagine how much you could do with that information.

Statistics have their place. Just be sure not to get too wrapped up in them.

Build your blog first.

So, What’s Your Plan?

What are your statistical goals and what will you do to get there?

Also, how will you track your progress? Weekly? Bi-weekly? Monthly?

I applaud you.

Having a voice is a big deal these days.

Many people are scared to speak their minds for fear of ruffling the feathers of their environment.

Either that, or they have such a strong desire to fit in that they suppress their own personality to make room for the cookie-cutter template of modern society.

But that’s not you.

You’ve chosen to have a voice displayed through the words on your new blog. Again, I applaud you for that.

I worry about you, though.

You see, the blogosphere has its own set of unwritten (and ill-advised) rules and regulations.

The funny thing about that is it’s full of individuals who have their own minds and the freedom to be as unique as they’d like.

Yet, we still end up with clones.

Why?

Because 99% of new bloggers want to be the blogger they idolize.

Now, you have 17,392 wannabe Probloggers (Darren Rowse) with the same blog design, the same articles, the same writing style, and the same tactics.

The only thing different is their success; or lack thereof.

I can’t let this happen to you. Unfortunately, the decision is not mine to make.

It’s yours.

You have to decide on a few key things in order to paint the picture that is your blogging destiny.

Why Are You Doing This?

Hands down, the most important part of blogging is understanding why you are doing it.

You see, blogging can take on many forms.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be a place where you tell everyone the things that are on your mind.

Your blog can be a place to help others, making the blog topic focus on things that are on your readers’ minds.

Either way, you have to know why you’re writing.

What you say, how you say it, how often you publish, what kind of engagement you foster, what products or services you offer; it all depends on why you are blogging.

If you don’t know why you’re blogging, no one will be able to teach you how to blog.

What if it Doesn’t Work?

If your blog doesn’t take off to be the next best thing, will you still write?

It’s important to know this from the beginning because your blog will not take off like a rocket ship. It just won’t.

Will you still be able to sit down at your computer and hammer away at those innocent keys if you know that almost no one will read it?

This question is important because I can almost guarantee you that you’ll have about 6 months of nothingness on your blog before people even start to take you seriously.

During that time, you’ll feel like “it doesn’t work.” When you reach this point, will you continue or will you quit?

Most will quit, not realizing that this is a normal part of building a blog.

In What Areas Will You Need Help?

First of all, completely erase the idea that you are superman or superwoman.

You can’t do this alone and please don’t try to.

With that being said, it is important to understand where you need help.

It’s just as important to understand where you don’t need any help.

Recently, I wrote a post titled Why Most New Bloggers Idolize the Wrong Experts and Practically Ask for Failure.

In that article, I wrote about new bloggers following the wrong experts for the wrong reasons.

If you’re a great writer, you have a keen eye for quality web design, and you understand how to engage an audience, do you really need someone to teach you every detail of blogging?

Maybe your weak points are your perseverance and dedication.

The typical blog coach doesn’t always talk to you about self-improvement. So, why would you spend every day and night learning from someone that isn’t teaching you how to progress in your suffering areas?

New bloggers do it all the time, unfortunately.

They follow the guy that makes the most money, not realizing that they are completely ignoring the areas they need help in the most.

Understanding What it Means to Blog

I can tell you first hand that blogging can become repetitive.

Once your blog is up and running, it’s too easy to write and publish content.

You can do that over and over again.

And?

Sure, you’re a blogger and you’re blogging. That’s it, though.

Chances are if you’re reading this article, you’re not blogging just to blog. You have some kind of personal, financial, or professional goal.

You can quickly find yourself publishing content just to publish content if your goals aren’t clearly defined.

You can sit in this phase for months or even years if you don’t know what you’re doing it for.

When you make the decision to blog, you need to set goals for your blog and all things related. As David Risley of DavidRisley.com points out, blogs won’t earn you money.

You won’t get paid for publishing content to your own blog.

Instead, blog posts will earn you the attention of others. What are you going to do with that attention?

Answering that question is what will push you past the repetitive content-publishing phase.

Otherwise, the “Publish” button will become your best friend and that’s as far as things will go.

In Closing

I hope you didn’t expect this article to be full of answers to your millions of questions about blogging.

I choose not to answer the majority of those questions because you already know the answers to most of them. Either that or the questions aren’t relevant in the first place.

You know what it is that made you want to start blogging.

What you need to do now is lay out your goals as a blogger; figure out what areas you need help in the most, and find that help; resist the temptation to emulate the guy that makes the most money, unless your goal is to hide him in your basement and take his place financially; and start working on your craft.

Every big name blogger has a style of their own. It’s a combination of who they are as individuals, and what they’ve learned throughout the course of their blogging career.

You’re already you. Be sure to stay that way as you work to build your archives.

Only then will you claim your space among the best in the blogosphere. Otherwise, you’ll always trail behind those you mimic, just like everyone else standing beside you.

Each time I write one of these posts, I’m a completely different blogger from the last one.

I learn new things about blogging as a whole and my perspective changes.

As usual, I am not here to insult anyone.

Why I Hate Your Blog is my way of pointing out things that I’ve seen on blogs that aren’t necessarily in any blogger’s best interest.

Let’s get on with the show.

13 Things I Hate About Your Blog (Part 5)

Before we get started, make sure you check out the first four parts of the series.

Not that they are related; I just want to make sure we are on the same page up to this point.

Unreadable Text – Bad Typography

When I first started this series, I couldn’t care less about the text on your blog. I read what I could and ignored what I couldn’t.

Text has become a big deal to me over the last couple of months, though.

Maybe it’s because I am reading more often now.

Who knows? All I know is that I cannot stand a blog with hard-to-read text.

It’s All About the Content

First of all, we can’t lose sight of what makes your blog unique.

It’s not the design, contrary to popular belief.

It’s your content.

No other blog in the blogosphere has the same exact content as yours from the header to the footer.

Your content is where you make the decision to blend in with the crowd or stick out like the outstanding publisher that you are.

So, arguably, your content is the single most important part of your blog.

You do want people to be able to read it… right?

Understanding Typography

The reason why I didn’t care about my text before is because I didn’t understand typography.

Chris Pearson, the mind behind the Thesis WordPress Theme and Pearsonified.com, sums it up quite nicely in “Secret Symphony: The Ultimate Guide to Readable Web Typography”.

…typography is a combination of artistic letterforms and mathematical proportions, an exquisite marriage of form and function.

When the mathematical proportions of your typography are harmonious, your site—and your content, specifically—look appealing to readers.

Conversely, when the proportions of your typography are imbalanced, your content isn’t as attractive to readers, and your site seems cluttered and disorganized.

In other words, the way your text is displayed matters to your readers… whether they know it or not.

There are many different dimensions that must be considered when configuring content for your blog.

Font Size

Line Height

Line Width

Characters Per Line

How big the reader’s eyes are

Wait… not the last one. But the rest are legit.

It’s not as simple as choosing your favorite font and throwing it on the screen like scattered paint.

It doesn’t work that way.

Things to Consider

So, where do you start? Well, I’d like to call myself an expert in this area but that wouldn’t be accurate.

Instead, I’ll point in you the direction of someone who is dedicating a lot of time and effort to revolutionizing the importance of typography in web design.

Again, that’s Chris Pearson.

Check out these two outstanding articles on Typography as it applies to web design.

Secret Symphony: The Ultimate Guide to Readable Web Typography

How to Tune Typography Based on Characters Per Line

It is absolutely necessary for you to understand these things in order to enhance the readability of your content for your readers.

After all, you write for them.

After reading those articles, you may be <del>a little bit</del> intimidated by the mathematical equations. I was.

No worries, though.

Pearson has thrown together (understatement of the year) an outstanding tool for you to use called the Golden Ratio Typography Calculator.

All you have to do is plug in a few dimensions and let his math do the work.

Why Does This Matter?

At the end of the day, folks, your content runs the show.

I know that some people will argue with that and that’s fine. I don’t care. All I know is that if I don’t like what you have to say, I’m not going to read your stuff.

So, be sure I can read your text in the first place.

If your text stretches from far left to far right, there’s very little space between lines, and the font size is terribly small in comparison to how wide the content is, I’m not even going to start reading.

It matters because I am human and I naturally like things a certain way.

I’ll never know just how good your content really is if I’m turned off as soon as the page loads. You won’t survive as a blogger that way.

Be sure to check out Pearson’s work and adjust accordingly.

I hope everyone is as excited as I am about the coming of a new year. It’s a blank canvas, so to speak, for you to rewrite the rules of success and internet entrepreneurship.

2012 will be a huge year for SuccessOnMyMind.com as I have so many things planned to help this site grow.

For now, let’s review the best of 2011 just in case you happened to miss something.

The best of 2011

1. The Success Proclamation

The Success Proclamation is a basically a visual representation of what it means to be success-oriented and self-confident. I created the Success Proclamation to serve as a reminder of what success is inevitable for you.

The Success Proclamation can be downloaded and saved to your computer as well as purchased in full poster size and hung up on your wall at home. Enjoy!

2. 7 Key Design Flaws to Avoid for New Bloggers

This was really one of my first stand-out posts on SuccessOnMyMind.com. It’s healthy guide on avoiding key design mistakes that a lot of new bloggers make.

As you would assume, it’s all a matter of opinion and every blog is different. So, some of the guidance in this article only pertains to certain blogs. Also, I have even changed this very blog to display certain things that I was against at the time of writing the article.

Either way, the advice is helpful when put into perspective. Take a look at each tip and the examples to go along with them.

3. Derek Halpern’s “No Search Form” Post on Social Triggers

What can I say about this one? This was probably the first time that I worked up the nerve to really take a stand on what I believe.

This post is not so much about my disagreement with Derek Halpern about the need for search forms on blogs, but more about the people who are willing to follow what someone else says without even doing any testing or research themselves.

Derek is a smart guy but that doesn’t mean I have to agree with him on everything. I touched on that in this article.

4. Starting a Blog? 60+ Resources New Bloggers Must Read

Over the years, I’ve started blogging and quit blogging many times. Why? I don’t know. That’s beside the point, though.

One thing I noticed is that every time I came back to the blogosphere, I would have to learn things all over again. Somehow, I always ended up on the same outstanding articles that I had already seen a few years before. That’s how I knew the content was good.

I decided to make life easier on new bloggers by bringing all of that content to one spot. The list is massive and broken down into key areas that lead you from brand new blogger to internet entrepreneur.

5. How You Can Get More Traffic by Using Scribd for FREE

Boy was I excited about this one when I wrote it! Scribd is huge social reading and publishing company that allows you to share, find, and publish original content on the web.

Scribd accounts are easy to set up and extremely flexible. In this article, I talked about how to turn your popular blog posts into documents and upload them to Scribd for more exposure. There’s even a pretty cool feature for embedding Scribd content on your blog.

Be sure to check this one out.

6. Risk-Avoiding, Self-Proclaiming, Non-Innovative, 21st Century Wishful Thinkers

This article was full of emotion and passion. Ultimately, I was disgusted with myself for the lack of action I had been taking while calling myself an internet entrepreneur.

It takes more than typing up a few words on a blog post to call yourself an entrepreneur. I did it anyway. This particular day, though, I finally realized that I was satisfied with thinking big but not actually doing big.

I decided to make a change, but not before publicly calling myself out. You might enjoy this one.

7. How to Stay on the Road to Success and Never Digress… Ever

Chasing success is nothing new to me. I’ve half-assed it plenty of times in the past. Why didn’t I give it my full efforts? Because it’s very difficult. That’s why.

However, I’ve learned how to hang in there this time around and I decided to share with you what I’ve learned.

In order to make it big in whatever it is that you’re trying to do, it’s going to take some intense dedication. If not, your goals aren’t big enough. Read this article to learn what it takes to stay on the road to success and never give up.

8. A Complete Guide to Understanding the Power of Thesis WordPress Theme

Thesis Theme Framework for WordPress is arguably the best WordPress theme in the land. Created by Chris Pearson, Thesis is designed for speed and Search Engine Optimization “right out of the box.”

Once installed, administrative capabilities are top-of-the-line and design is made so simple that a brand new blogger can make a gorgeous blog.

The proof is in the pudding with this one. Take a look at this article to see the features for yourself.

9. 13 Reasons Why I Hate Your Blog

This is a series I created to help point out some common blogging mistakes I see around the blogosphere.

By no means am I a blogging expert. However, with my years of experience and all of the things that I have learned, I feel confident enough to know what types of things are bad for bloggers.

In this series, I attempt to point out some of these bad habits. Not only that, I provide alternatives so that your blog can maintain its functionality without turning readers off. Take a look at the entire series and subscribe to catch future updates as they happen.

10. Sick and Tired of Blogging: A Blogger’s Frustration Uncensored

Quite possibly the most frustrating day in all of my time blogging; I used this article to vent and teach at the same time.

I was in desperate need of a pep-talk that I ended up having to give myself. I chose to do it publicly because I was at that critical point where you just want to quit blogging. Had I not written out my frustrations, I probably wouldn’t be here making a recap of 2011 right now.

For those new to blogging, I hope that you too make it through the rough days to keep publishing content. Don’t ever become discouraged because it seems like no one is listening. Your time will come… if you want it to.

I’ve been asking myself this question over and over again for the last few weeks.

What do I do different in 2012 now that I have a little bit of content?

What should my goals be?

Am I still a beginner or is it time to make big moves?

As you all know, the first few months of blogging can be pretty tough. It’s like you’re writing to yourself.

Many times before, I’ve quit during those months, never to see my past blogs take off like I once knew they would.

Things are definitely different this time around, though.

The only question is, what can we do different in 2012 to push our blogs to the next level?

All of a sudden, I feel like I know the answer to this question.

It’s not a glamorous answer that will give you goosebumps or maximize your confidence levels.

I’ll leave that for the gurus who know how to make you feel they way they want you to feel.

Instead, my answer is simple. At the very least, it will ensure you different results from your efforts in 2011.

Are you ready for a change?

Get Uncomfortable

At this point, as a fairly new blogger, that’s all you need to do.

Stop doing what you know you can do.

Stop hiding within the boundaries you’ve created for yourself.

Stop thinking that you’re too new in the blogging business to do certain things or affiliate with certain people.

You have to get to where you want to be somehow, right?

Well, the things you have been doing are fine and dandy, but you’re looking at the results they will bring you.

If you want to discover new levels of success, you have to embrace new methods of achieving results.

In 2012, step outside of your comfort zone.

Make everything you do challenging and difficult.

Start important tasks that you don’t necessarily understand how to finish, but have the confidence that you will get it done.

Do everything as if you were already on the level you were trying to reach.

Change can happen any day, but most would admit that it feels amazing to start something new on a Monday, the first of a month, or even better, the first day of a new year.

Here’s your opportunity.

Make 2012 a year of discomfort and big results.

What will you do differently in 2012?

What Does a Novice Blogger Do Differently in 2012? is a post from: Success On My Mind.
First, let me explain to you now that this will not be a guide for creating exciting content.

There are plenty of guides in the blogosphere for that.

I don’t want to sound like everyone else and tell you to be yourself, write like you talk, and all of that nonsense.

Instead, I look to raise awareness with this article and you can choose your own path for fixing the “problem” if you feel that you have one.

Does your content excite people?

If you have your own list of favorite blogs, I’m sure you know what I am talking about.

Exciting content makes you come back a few days later excited to see the latest post. Possibly, you’ve visited the blog once or twice everyday to see if they’ve posted anything new.

You can tell if you are creating this kind of content because there will be consistency in who comments on your posts.

For thirty days, Corbett Barr of CorbettBarr.com post something on his blog. It was something he vowed to do and he kept up with it quite well.

During that thirty days, I enjoyed nothing more than waking up in the morning to read and comment on his brand spanking new post. It was exciting to wait for the page to load, read the post, start typing a comment, check back to see who else has commented, etc. I loved it.

There are a few other blogs that excite me that way, too.

How about your blog?

Have you noticed anyone reading your content every time you post and commenting almost immediately? That’s an indication that your content excites that person. They can’t wait to read it and they feel like it’s Christmas all over again every time the see something new on your blog.

A few days ago, I watched a trailer for a movie coming out in May of 2012 that really got me excited. The trailer was for Men In Black III. I cannot wait to see it!

I remember being so entertained by the first two movies when I was a kid. So, when I saw the trailer for part III, I couldn’t help but smile and think about how I am going to see the movie as soon as it comes out.

I feel like I know for sure that the movie will be good. I enjoy the fictional characters, Will Smith’s funny ways, and the overall plot of the movie series. So, I know I’ll enjoy this one as well.

Here’s the trailer if you haven’t seen it…

Are you creating content that makes your readers feel this way when they wake up to an email that has your blog name in the subject line?

I feel like this should be the goal of every blogger.

Create content that not only keeps people coming back, but makes them excited to come back.

Again, it’s up to you to figure out how to do that. Just make sure this is one of your main goals.

For the last three months, I’ve written content on this blog and not once have I thought about making it exciting to my readers. I look to add value to their lives. I look to provide solid information and advice that they can use. But I have never thought about entertaining them enough to make them excited to return to my blog.

I think it’s time to change that.

Derek Halpern of SocialTriggers.com excites his readers by providing one of a kind content that you most likely won’t find anywhere else in the blogosphere. He has a unique view on almost everything blogging related which definitely grabs and holds your attention. Very exciting!

Pat Flynn of SmartPassiveIncome.com excites his readers by providing extremely valuable tips to help people make money online. The key to his exciting content is that it all leads up to his monthly income reports which he posts every month. Seeing a $40,000 month makes every post in between income reports that much more exciting.

Jacob Sokol of Sensophy.com is just an exciting person and I think he knows that. That’s why he has a ton of videos on his blog. You can feel his excitement and passion in every video. That definitely motivates people to return to his blog with excitement.

If you can create content that has this kind of effect on people, you will be well on your way to having a successful blog.

Now, if I could only figure out how to make more content more exciting…
