“Dead in the Water”: There&#39;s a problem with the world&#39;s water supply. One in four people on earth do not have access to clean drinking water. Water and sanitation infrastructures are crumbling. We keep using more of it, yet continue to degrade and deplete it. Powerful companies spotted a crisis and saw a business opportunity. From Moncton, New Brunswick to Atlanta, Georgia and Buenos Aires, Argentina to Soweto, South Africa, the Fifth Estate&#39;s Linden MacIntyre investigates the results of the effort to privatize what many consider a public trust.

“Writing on Water”: This film covers the pan-Asian Water Colloquium (Water: Common Good, Public Management and Alternatives Securing the Right to Water Challenges and Solutions in Asia) that brought together water activists, managers, unionists, academics and policy makers from 18 countries, in Chennai (India) in September 2008. Structured in 6 parts the entire film is available on YouTube so that it can be viewed by a global audience. What is very significant is that the film uses the context of the Colloquium to present the `Democratisation in Water Management&#39; experiment in Tamil Nadu, the experiences of engineers in transforming the way a state water company functioned and the larger issues facing the water rights movement.

Annual “Boost Your Eco Festival”

When: Fri Mar 27, 2009 6pm to 8:30pm&nbsp;

<br />Event Description: On Saturday, April 25 St. Thomas University will host its tenth annual fund-raising event in support of the Millennium Bursary Programme.

Since its inception in 2000, this annual event has raised $1.2 million to provide hundreds of bursaries to students in financial need. The money raised is uniquely effective as every dollar is matched with 50 cents from the Province of New Brunswick.

“Students come to St. Thomas University because they recognize our unique care and concern for the individual. We actively seek ways to help our students during their academic years by providing options for assistance, such as scholarships and bursaries,” said Colleen Comeau, executive director of advancement and university mission.

“The Millennium Bursary Fund is one of our most successful means for support, and it ensures that our students can complete their education.”

This year’s proceeds from Primavera will be directed to a special Millennium Bursary named in memory of John McKendy, professor of sociology, who died tragically in 2008.

John was a cherished member of the St. Thomas community where he taught sociology for 29 years. His research interests included social inequality and social justice, gender and social class, the sociology of emotions and violence, and social structure.

For many years, John helped men in Dorchester Penitentiary to discover alternatives to violence. He spent part of the past two summers in Burundi, helping to construct an AIDS clinic for women through the African Great Lakes Initiative Program of the Friends&#39; Peace Teams.

“Professor McKendy was an extraordinary academic, a mentor to students and professors alike, and a man who incorporated justice and peace into his daily practices. This year’s Primavera will be an opportunity to remember and inspire,” said president and vice-chancellor, Dr. Michael W. Higgins.

The event will have great food, an exciting auction and raffle, first-class entertainment, as well as a special tribute to John. The evening promises to be one you won’t soon forget.

Please support the bursary programme by purchasing tickets to this event. Tickets are $125.00 with an accompanying tax receipt for $100.00. To order your tickets, please contact Debbie Hudson at 452-0645 or hudson@stu.ca.

Thank you in advance for your support - see you in April.

STU Career Fair - Working With Older Adults

When: Mon Mar 9, 2009 4:30pm to 5:30pm&nbsp;
