Students sometimes discover that they need a federal student loan consolidation program to lower their payment. A federal student consolidation loan can help.

Student Loan Consolidation

It takes a great deal of money to pay for an education, and most college educations these days are financed either in full or in part with grants, scholarships, and student loans. There may come a time when you discover that you need a federal student loan consolidation program. These loan amounts may not seem like a lot of money when you are getting them, because they are disbursed to you at certain periods, in relatively small amounts, throughout the course of your education. At the end of your education, however, the amount that you owe in student loan repayment can be staggering.

There are two federal student loan consolidation programs: FFEL Consolidation loans or Direct Consolidation loans. As their names imply, FFEL consolidation is for FFEL loans, and Direct Consolidation is for direct loans. While you can get consolidation loans from various financial sources, the best place to get this type of consolidation loan is the United States Department of Education – the originator of your direct loans, or the lending institution that your FFEL loans came from.

Essentially, when you get a federal student consolidation loan all of the federal student loans that you received during the course of your education is combined to create just one loan – meaning that you only have one monthly student loan repayment bill to make. There are both advantages and disadvantages to consolidating student loans.

The benefits of a student loan consolidation are that you only have one monthly payment, with one due date each month. The loan payment for the consolidated loan may be lower than the combined payments of all of your loans before the consolidation. Instead of having the usual ten to twenty five years to repay the loan, you may have up to thirty years to repay the loan, making the payments relatively low, depending on how much your education loans were and when you get the consolidation loan, you will be locked into an interest rate that cannot exceed 8.25% for the duration of the loan.

The disadvantages to getting a federal student loan consolidation program are that it could take longer to pay off the loan than it would have taken to pay the individual student loans. Furthermore, the interest rate for the consolidation loan may be higher than the interest rates of the individual loans, and of course, the cost of your education – in total – may be significantly higher because of the increased interest and the amount of time it takes to pay off the consolidated loan.

If you are interested in a federal student consolidation loan, you can obtain such a loan when you have started repaying the loans, at any time after you have started repaying your student loans, during the grace period, and during any periods of deferment or during forbearance.

Before you enter into a federal student consolidation loan program, it is important to really pay close attention to what the cost of your educational loans will be, in total, without the consolidation, and with the consolidation – including all interest & payment years you will be making in both cases. Of course, you will want to go with the cheapest option, even if it means making multiple payments with different amounts and due dates each month. Your family accountant can easily work those figures for you in no time in which case will tell you exactly the best student loan repayment option depending on your circumstances & restrictions. If nothing else, you can set up the payments to be deducted from your checking account automatically each month as they come due which would easily solve this multiple monthly payment problems.

Student Loan Forgiveness Programs

Many college students upon graduation are ready to start repaying back their student loans and want to know how to get a student loan discharge or a student loan cancellation because they realize the amount that they now owe may be more than they can actually make in a decade. They have finished their education, received a degree and are ready to move on to the working world and tackle challenges in their field of study but with a monthly student loan repayment which is equivalent to a small house payment. They are left standing financially bewildered. Sound familiar?

There are actually several student loan forgiveness programs and student loan discharge and student loan cancellation opportunities that may apply to you. A discharge or cancellation of your student loans means that you will never have to repay the loan. You will not be eligible for loan forgiveness or cancellation just because you do not finish your degree program or graduate. There are only certain conditions and circumstances that will make you eligible for non-payment.

In the instance of a student loan discharge, the loan will only be discharged if you die, if your school closed before you completed your degree program, if the degree that you received was falsified, or if you become permanently and totally disabled. There are other rare cases where a loan may be discharged, including being employed in certain lines of work, or in some cases of bankruptcy. But a loan discharge is not the same as a loan cancellation or loan forgiveness.

Student loan cancellation and student loan forgiveness is often the same thing, and is typically only available for public service employees. To be eligible for cancellation or forgiveness, you cannot be in default on any of your student loans, and you must have made payments for a period of at least 120 months, or ten years. Of course, you must also be a public service employee, such as military service, public health service, public education, law enforcement, public safety, state or federal government work, emergency management, or other types of public service work. You must be employed in that work on a full time basis.

Having your student loans forgiven or discharged is of course the best way to get rid of that debt, but there are other things that you need to know about, concerning the repayment of these loans, in the event that you are not eligible for student loan discharge or student loan cancellation or forgiveness. If you have any type of economic hardship or you re-enroll in school, you could have the student loan payments deferred for a specified period of time. You can also get a student loan deferment if you are serving in the military. Forbearance is also possible, but it works differently than deferment. You can also contact the administrator of your student loans to find out if other forms of financial relief are available for those loans.

Obviously, not everyone will be eligible for a student loan discharge or student loan cancellation, but it never hurts to see if you are eligible, if you’ve been making the payments for the last ten years, or if your circumstances have changed in a way that makes it hard or impossible to meet your student loan repayment obligations.

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program was instituted for Federal Direct Stafford & Direct PLUS student loans which can be forgiven after 120 repayments.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness

In an effort to encourage more people to enter into lower paying public service jobs, instead of only using their education for higher paying corporate jobs, the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program was instituted. What you must know about this program is that it isn’t available immediately upon graduation from college – when your loans become due. There are certain conditions that must be met.

First, you absolutely cannot be in default on any of your loans. Second, you must have made at least 120 payments on your loans. That means that you must have made your payments, without going into default, for the last ten years. Furthermore, you must have been employed full time in an eligible public service job for those ten years. If you meet these requirements, any Direct Stafford Loans or Direct PLUS loans can be forgiven – but only the remaining balances will be forgiven. This includes any direct consolidation loans for those loans. This program is federal student loan forgiveness.

If you consolidate FFEL loans into a direct consolidation loan, the 120 month period starts when the consolidation loan is granted. Payments made on FFEL loans before that time will not count towards the 120 month period. The repayment plan for your loans also matters when you are considered for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Only loans that have an income contingent repayment plan, a standard repayment plan, and income based repayment plans are considered.

It is also important to realize that in order to be eligible for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, only payments that have been made since October 1, 2007 will count towards the 120 month period, as this program did not exist before that time. During that 120 month period, you can never be more than fifteen days late with your monthly payment.

In the case of Direct PLUS loans, these loans can only be forgiven if all of the above requirements are met, and the parent who made the loan is employed in an approved form of public service. It doesn’t matter which business sector the student is employed in.

There is a wide range of jobs that are approved for this program, including jobs in law enforcement, the military, some health fields, federal and state government jobs, non-profit organizations, public education jobs, public safety jobs, emergency management jobs, public library jobs and several other types of public service jobs.

As you can see, the requirements for student loan forgiveness are fairly strict. By the time you are eligible, you will have made ten years of loan payments and then only the remaining balance will be forgiven. If your educational loans totaled great amounts, then student loan forgiveness will be important to you. However, if they were not, you may already have the loans paid off before that ten year period is up. In the event that you have not finished paying off your student loans during that ten year period, however, and you meet all of the eligibility requirements, you definitely need to apply for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program to repay off the remainder of your qualified federal student loans.

Student Loan Deferment and Student Loan Forbearance

Graduating students always wonder what is student loan deferment & what is student loan forbearance in case they run into financial hardship because they may not be able to land a job quickly and their student loan repayment plan period will begin to start. Sometimes students graduate from college and need to use student deferment or student forbearance because they find that they are having trouble repaying student loans they’ve taken out to attend college. These two programs can keep your student loans from falling into default status – which brings a whole host of additional financial troubles on its own.

Let’s first take a look at student forbearance. Forbearance on student loans is an option when you are having financial hardships, but you do not qualify for a student deferment. In student loan forbearance, your payments are temporarily put on hold or reduced, depending on your situation. Student forbearance can be established for a period of twelve months, and renewed each year for up to three years. However, during this time, interest on the loans is still accumulating, and you will have to prove your financial hardship to the lender before student loans forbearance is granted.

If you meet certain requirements, your lender cannot deny you student forbearance. These requirements are that you are in a medical or dental residency program, if your student loan payments equal more than twenty percent of your monthly income, or if your payments are being made by the Department of Defense. Any one of these situations makes student loan forbearance mandatory by your lender.

A student loan deferment is much the same as student forbearance, with a few differences. A student deferment is usually only granted to those who are still enrolled in school at least half time or to those who are unable to find fulltime employment. In the case of inability to find fulltime employment, the student loan deferment can last for up to three years. Student loans deferment can be granted to students who owe student loans, as well as parents who owe PLUS loans.

Student deferment is also granted to those who are on active military duty, and that deferment will last until 180 days past the end of the active military service. Unlike student forbearance, interest does not accumulate during a student loan deferment – except in the case of unsubsidized Stafford Loans and PLUS loans.

To see if you qualify for student loan deferment or student forbearance, you must contact your lender or loan administrator to discuss your situation. Obviously, it is important that you do this before you stop making payments, because you do not want to fall into default status when repaying student loans.

Overall, there are more situations that make you eligible for student loans forbearance than there are to defer student loans, which makes it hard for most people to understand why you must not be eligible for student deferment to be eligible for forbearance of a student loan. However, because interest still accumulates with student forbearance, typically the financial hardship that creates the need for a student deferment of your loan doesn’t have to be as great to be granted forbearance of student loans.

Student Loan Repayment Plan

When you start repaying your student loans, you may quickly become overwhelmed with the entire process – not to mention the amount of money that you now owe for your education. A student loan repayment plan must be taken very seriously, and there are certain responsibilities that you must be aware of.

First, before you ever got the first student loan, you carefully considered the need for that loan. Too often, students end up borrowing more than they actually need to pay for their education and this can cause a financial hardship later on. A student loans repayment plan should always be considered when you first consider applying for the loan. Getting the loan is typically very easy – paying it back is always the hard part. You can go to the FAFSA4caster to determine exactly what you will need to pay for college. The FAFSA4caster is an online tool that is available for free, and is being used by more and more students, parents, student counselors, and even financial aid experts when trying to calculate all cost a college student will need.

Second, be aware that if you fail to make your payments on time, your student loans could be defaulted. Default status on a student loan has extremely serious consequences. Your wages could be garnished. Any tax refunds owed to you will be held. Your credit could be in shreds, and there could be legal judgments against you.

Failure to complete your education does not make you any less liable for your student loans repayment. Everything that you borrowed must still be repaid, and if you received grants, and didn’t finish your education, you may have to pay those back as well in some cases. Failure to find employment after graduation isn’t an excuse either – although in this case, you may be able to get a deferment, which will postpone your payments for a time. If you are trying to get a deferment or forbearance, you must still make your payments while you wait for a decision from your lender.

You are responsible for making your student loan repayment on time, and in full. Partial payments are frowned upon, and could result in default. Typically, you will receive bills or notices before your due date, or you may have a coupon book to make your payments. However, even if you do not receive these notices, bills or coupons, it is still your responsibility to make your payment on time and in full.

Keep copies of everything! From the Promissory Note to the receipts for each payment you make and all correspondence with your lender. If you need to communicate with your lender, you can do so over the telephone, but always put the gist of the conversation in writing, and mail it to your lender, keeping a copy for yourself. You never know when you might need these things.

For a good student loan repayment plan it is your responsibility to notify your lender when you graduate, if you quit school, or if your status drops below half time. You must also notify your lender of any changes of address or telephone numbers, or names, in the event that you are female and you marry. Lenders must also be made aware if you transfer to a different school.

As you can see, there are many responsibilities that you need to be aware of and meet for a student loan repayment plan to work. Like any other type of situation not knowing what your responsibilities were isn’t an excuse for not meeting your responsibilities where repaying student loans are concerned. It is your responsibility to find out what you do not know! This will always be of utmost importance in any student loan repayment plan that will work.

Repay Student Loans

Just as there was a great deal of consideration, time and work that went into applying for and receiving the funds to pay for your education, especially if it was a no cosigner student loan, a great deal of thought and consideration must be given to the aspect to repay student loans. This is because there are many options to consider, and many steps to take. Here are the guidelines that you need to know on repaying student loans.

You have a grace period. This is the time between graduating from college, or dropping below half time status, before you have to start making your repayments on your student loans. This grace period is six months if your loans are FFEL or Direct loans, or nine months for Perkins loans.

Typically, before graduating, you will have an appointment with your financial aid officer, and you will be counseled on repaying your student loans. This is referred to as exit counseling. You can also get exit counseling online through the FAFSA website.

You should be given all of the information that you need for repaying student loans, and you will most likely make several decisions regarding the student loan repayment process during this appointment. In the event that you do not receive exit counseling, you can visit the Department of Educations’ National Student Loan Data System or NSLDS to obtain information regarding repaying student loans.

You will need to choose a repayment plan. The choices are standard, extended, income based, income contingent, graduated, and income-sensitive. Different student loan repayment options are only available for certain types of federal loans. For example, the income contingent laws are only available for students who had direct loans, while income-sensitive repayment plans are only available to students who had FFEL loans. Your financial aid officer can give you more details about each type of repayment plan, which plans you are eligible for, and help you to decide which plan work best for you in repaying student loans.

There is one way to lower the amount of your monthly payment, and it is recommended that you use this method – not only to get a lower payment and save a bit of money, but also to ensure that you are never late with a student loan repayment. You can have your payments deducted electronically either from your checking or savings account, or with your credit card. This typically reduces the interest rate, and this is how you save money.

If you ever see that you are going to have trouble repaying student loans – even if you think you will be late on just one payment, you need to contact your loan administrator as soon as possible. This is the place where you make your payments. When you do this, you can figure out a way to stay in the good graces of the lender either by making a change in your repayment plan, getting a deferment, or forbearance, depending on your unique circumstances. The worst thing that you can do is ignore the debt, as this will put you into default status, which is very serious and your credit is adversely affected.

Repaying student loans can often be stressful, but there are always options if you talk to your lender openly. In many cases, a student loan consolidation can help ease the financial burden to repay student loans because of a lower payment.

Consider the Federal Pell Grant first before taking out a bad credit no cosigner student loan because it's actually a superior alternative to student loans.

Federal Pell Grant

Consider the Federal Pell Grant first before taking out a bad credit no cosigner student loan because it’s actually a superior alternative to student loans. You may be able to cover all your college tuition if you receive this grant, not have to repay it back and it’s easy to apply for. You may need very little student loans if any at all. Lets’ take a closer look into this Federal Student Pell Grant and see if you qualify!

Preparing for college can be very stressful. When you add financial matters to the equation, it’s a wonder that more high school seniors aren’t finding themselves in mental wards from the stress and exhaustion that ensues. A Federal Pell Grant, however, can eliminate a great deal of stress especially if you need student loans with no cosigner to help because of bad credit.

You might assume that you are not eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, and you may even already know that you aren’t eligible. However, you still need to apply for one. First, you won’t know until you do apply. Second, some financial aid programs for which you are eligible will require you to apply for this grant first – even if you aren’t eligible for it.

The Federal Pell Grant Program was designed for low income undergraduate students. With that said, however, some graduate students are also eligible for this grant. This grant is accepted at more than 5000 colleges, universities, and trade schools in the United States.

The amount that you will receive from this grant will vary, and is based on numerous factors. These factors include what your family is able or expected to contribute, how much your college tuition is, and whether you are a full time or part time student. If you are eligible for this grant, you should note that you are only eligible for one Pell Grant at a time.

Applying for the Pell Grant is very easy, much easier then student loans without a cosigner to help and it actually occurs when you are filling out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA form. Once you fill out this form and file it, you will receive a Student Aid Report, also referred to as a SAR. This report will tell you if you are eligible for a Pell Grant or not.

Being financially eligible for this Pell Grant isn’t all that is required to determine Pell Grant Eligibility. If you have already earned a bachelors degree, you may not be eligible for this grant, regardless of whether you are going to graduate school, or going into another program of undergraduate study. There are exceptions to this rule, however, and you can find out if your situation is one of those exceptions by talking with your financial aid officer.

If you are currently in jail or prison, or you have a prison record, there is a chance that you may not be eligible for a grant. Again, you will need to talk with a financial aid officer to find out if your situation merits an exception or not. You may also be ineligible if you are attending a certain type of school, such as a correspondence or distance learning program. Make sure that the school that you have chosen will not prevent you from receiving this important form of financial aid.

Finally, if you have defaulted on a guaranteed student loan, whether there was a cosigner involved or not, you won’t be eligible for a student Pell Grant. There may be other situations that will prevent you from getting one of these grants as well, and again, you will need to fill out the FAFSA form to find out for sure.

Applying for a Federal Pell Grant is very important, as it can make up a significant amount of the money that you need to attend school, although the award amount seldom pays for your education entirely. You may still need some type of no cosigner student loan, but not as much. It’s a great alternative to student loans. With that said, however, this is money that doesn’t ever have to be repaid, and again, you are already applying for this grant when you fill out and submit your FAFSA.

TEACH Grant Program No Cosigner Student Loan

An Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) is a great replacement if you’re looking for No Cosigner Student Loans. All students should look into a Federal ACG Grant to help pay the high cost of tuition today not just people who need a student loan with no cosigners required to cosign along with them. Grants are like free college money and students are not required to pay them back. If students have bad credit they usually need a cosigner for a student loan, but they can do it all themselves with the Federal ACG Grant. It’s a great alternative student loan program. Let’s look closer at the ACG grant and see if you’re eligible for one.

If you were in approved advanced classes in high school, and are about to enter either your first or second year of an under graduate degree program, you may be eligible for the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG). This is a newer grant that many people have never heard of, as it just became available in 2006. The ACG is a federal grant, and does not have to be repaid.

The Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) awards eligible students with $750 for the first year of college, and $1300 for the second year. The basic requirements of the ACG are much the same as for other federal grants. For example, it can only be awarded to those students who are eligible for a Pell Grant during the same year, the student must be enrolled as a half time student or full time student, and must be a citizen of the United States. This may not be enough to fully cover all your college expenses and you may still need no cosigner student loans but it will significantly help your financial cause.

As stated, this grant is only available to first and second year students, and the student must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 to be and remain eligible during the first and second year of school. What sets this grant apart from others is the fact that you must have also completed an approved rigorous program of study in high school.

You may meet this requirement for the Academic Competitiveness (ACG) Grant if you were in advanced or honors programs at your high school and you successfully completed those courses. AP courses and exams can also count if you completed at least two such courses with a score of three or better.

You don’t even have to be in ‘advanced’ classes if you have a high school curriculum that includes four years of English, three years of math, and three years of science, three years of social studies or history, and one year of a foreign language.

Because this grant is rather new, and because of the number of different programs or curriculums that could make you eligible for the grant, it is important that you ask about this grant specifically when you discuss your financial aid package with the financial aid officer at the school you will be attending.

Like other types of federal student aid, your eligibility will be determined by the information on your FAFSA form, but because of the rigorous study requirement, if this grant is not a part of your financial aid package, and you meet all other requirements, make sure that you ask about it so that you aren’t missing out on any available funds that will help pay for your education. If you do miss out on it then you may need a no cosigner student loan program to pay your tuition.

Obviously, because of what you must do in order to meet the requirement for rigorous study, you need to actually be thinking of the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) as early as your freshman year of high school. To find out which types of programs of study in high school will fulfill the requirements for the ACG, you can see the list of approved programs, separated by graduation year by going to ACG Grant. If you’ve already finished high school, or are about to finish, check the list to see if any programs that you’ve already completed will make you eligible. If you have completed high school and have not meet the high school ACG requirements to apply, and then you can look into federal student loans no cosigner included to help finance your way through college. Not to worry to much though, they are actually very good programs along with favorable terms.

TEACH Grant Program

If you need a no cosigner student loan because of bad credit then you may want to look into the Federal TEACH Grant Program. This teaching grant may help pay your way through college and then you won’t have to worry about paying off all those no cosigner student loans when you graduate. Finding someone else to pay your college is the name of the game today. College tuition is expensive! Lets’ see if you fit the criteria and may benefit from the TEACH Grant Program.

If you are planning a future in the field of education, you may be eligible for the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant. This federal grant is available for graduate and under graduate students who are enrolled in approved programs, and who are attending college at least part time. It also applies to those who are in graduate teacher credential programs, and students who are currently teachers or formerly teachers, including those who have already retired from a teaching field.

The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant helps to pay for your education if you meet the specific requirements for the grant, and if you meet all of the other requirements for federal student aid. You must be a citizen of the
United States, and you must be in the 75th percentile on the SAT, the ACT, or the GRE. If you did not score this high on these tests, you may also be eligible if you have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25.

If you are awarded this grant, it does not have to be repaid. The award amount can be up to $4000 per year if you are a full time student, with a maximum of $16,000. Graduate students can receive up to a maximum of $8000. You must be enrolled in courses
that will result in a degree in a teaching field, and your intention must be to become a teacher upon graduation. The federal TEACH grant is nice substitute for a no cosigner student loan any day.

To ensure this, there is one other requirement for the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant that you must be aware of. You will be required to sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve. This agreement essentially states that within eight years of graduating from college, you will teach full time for four academic years in a low income elementary school, or in a secondary school in a high need field of study. If you fail to meet this obligation within the required time frame, the grant is converted to an unsubsidized direct student loan, and it must be paid back in full.

The school that you teach at to fulfill this obligation must be a school approved by the Department of Education for the purpose of meeting the obligation. High need fields for secondary education include foreign languages, science, mathematics, bilingual education, reading, special education, and more.

This is a very serious obligation that must be met, and before you apply for or accept this grant, it is very important that you give serious consideration to this condition of teaching. The teaching field has always been considered as a noble profession, but teaching in low income schools can be challenging. Make sure that you are up to the task.

Your eligibility for the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant will be determined by the information included on your FAFSA form, but you do not have to show financial need to receive it, as you do with other grants. The
Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) is not considered at all when you apply for this grant. The school that you choose must also participate in the TEACH Grant program.

If the above is something you feel comfortable with, then apply to the federal teach grant program and then you don’t have to worry about finding a cosigner for your student loan anymore. The worst that can happen if you don’t want to teach within eight years of
graduation is your teaching grant is converted to an unsubsidized direct student loan and you will have student loans to pay off. This would have been a similar situation (and better because you have (8) years to delay paying on your student loans) if you took out
student loans to begin with.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

Look into the National SMART Grant as an alternative student loan or no cosigner student loan because you never have to pay them back to the federal government.

National SMART Grant

Look into the National SMART Grant as an alternative student loan or if you need a no cosigner student loan because you never have to pay them back to the federal government. It’s like free college money and they are not as hard as you think to get one. If you are awarded a National SMART Grant you may not need a no cosigner student loan anymore.

If you are in your third, fourth, or fifth year of college, and working towards a degree in a qualified field, you may be eligible for the National SMART Grant, even if you have already received or will receive additional Federal Grants, scholarships, and loans. Just as other Federal Grants do not have to be repaid, this grant does not have to be repaid either.

SMART is short for Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent. You must be enrolled in an approved program, which includes computer science, life science, physical science, mathematics, engineering, technology, or what is determined to be a critical foreign language. Typically, your guidance counselor or financial aid office can tell you whether your program qualifies you for this grant.

The SMART grant may also be available to those who have not selected a degree program, such as liberal arts students; however, you must be enrolled in at least one course that is a part of the degree programs listed above. Even if you are enrolled in these degree programs, you must actually be taking courses that are applied to those degrees during the time that you receive your grant.

If you are eligible for the National SMART Grant, you will receive up to $4000, for each of the two or three years that you are eligible for it. Normally, this is your third and fourth year of college, but if you are enrolled in a five year degree program; you can also receive it in the fifth year of school. Funds from this grant can be disbursed to you by your school, and the funds will either be given directly to you, direct deposited into your bank account, or deposited into your school account. This is a great alternative student loan program because it pays for your college tuition and you will not need no cosigner student loans like most college students end up having to pay off upon graduation.

If your school operates on the semester system, you will be paid the total amount in two payments – once each semester. In this example, you would receive $2000 in the fall and another $2000 in the winter, if your grant amount was $4000. However, if the school works on the quarter system, the amount would be spread out into four payments. It is important to note that the amount of your Pell Grant, when combined with the SMART Federal Grant cannot be more than the cost to attend school.

The SMART Grant requirements are you must be enrolled at least half time in an approved program. Note that as a half time student, your award amount will be less than it would be if you were a full time student, as with most grants. This grant is only available to under graduate students, and you must additionally be eligible for the Pell Grant as well. You must also retain a grade point average of 3.0 to remain eligible for the award. Additionally, as with the Pell Grant, you must be a citizen of the United States.

As far as the the National SMART Grant application is concerned it usually is included in the financial aid package that your financial aid officer gives you before your third year of college begins. However, if it is not included in your package, makes sure that you ask about this SMART grant if you think that you are eligible. It’s will be a smart college financial move on your part and it’s a great alternative student loan program which may totally eliminate the need for those dreaded no cosigner student loans.
