The town of Iditarod was named after the Iditarod River. On Christmas Day 1908, prospectors John Beaton and W.A. "Bill" Dikeman found gold on Otter Creek, a tributary to the Iditarod River. News of the find spread and in the summer of 1909 miners arrived in the gold fields and built a small camp that was later known as Flat. People and supplies traveled to the gold fields by boat from the Yukon River, up the Innoko River, and up the Iditarod River to the current town site, a short walk from Flat. More gold was discovered and a massive stampede headed for Flat in 1910. The steamboat Tanana arrived June 1, 1910, and the city of Iditarod was founded as a head of navigation for all the surrounding gold fields, including Flat, Discovery, Otter, Dikeman, and Willow Creek. Iditarod quickly became a bustling boomtown, with hotels, cafés, brothels, three newspapers (only one would last the year), a Miners and Merchants Ban... Council has about 25 old buildings and much old mining equipment, including a dredge, laying about. During the summer, Council is used as a fish camp and a recreational location for residents of Nome and White Mountain.

In 1900, Jack Smith and Clarence Warner, two prospectors at the time, found a spot on a hill that became the biggest copper ore deposit ever found. More and more people began to come to the site to help with the mining until it reached over 400 people! Some of the famous miners were Guggenheim brothers, J.P. Morgan, and Stephen Birch, to name a few. The mine was soon closed in 1938 and now stands abandoned.

A prostitute named Alice who was killed in the building has been seen and felt in rooms 218 and 308, as well as on the stairway. The south side of the hotel reportedly has the most activity. One patron went into a Victorian antique styled bathroom. Later, she walked into the same bathroom and all the fixtures were modern.

The whole place has sort of an eerie, unsettled feeling about it. There is a small pile of crumbled cement where a stone water fountain used to stand. The water fountain had a sculptured small boy and girl in the middle of it.... although there isnt much left you can still see the remains.
REMAINS: A huge HItchock looking brick mansion, a large rusted swing set (with no swings), and several other smaller brick buildings.
Built in the 1920`s, Seaside was originally a hospital where children diagnosed with tuberculosis were sent to live out their final days. Because it is in such a beautiful area (isolated and right on the ocean), it was considered to be the ideal place for these children to pass on peacefully. Once science found a cure for tuberculosis, Seaside was turned into an institute for the matally handicapped. Several decades passed by and it was a well populated place, but eventually the state was forced to close it down due to the numerous lawsuits being filed agains... Kern is a ghost town located south of Girdwood, Alaska on the Seward Highway. Nobody lives there, and the maps indicate the entire townsite is now within the Chugach National Forest. No structures are visible from the roadway, but if you take the first pulloff south bound on the Seward Highway after passing Girdwood, then bushwhack through the small marsh and over the Alaska Railroad right of way (watch for trains!) you will find yourself on the old Kern townsite. The railroad still has a marker with the name "Kern" on it. The remnants of roads can be detected, but everything is overgrown and avalanches have destroyed much of the site. Several hunting treestands can be found in the area.

Dome Mine had its begining in 1909, and a town site was established as early as 1912. While the Town of South Porcupine was later laid out for Dome miners, the seperate townsite at the Dome could claim a school, ball field, rink, a doctor and office,unofficial post office,Dome offices, minning buildings, and nearly twenty homes by 1920. While a secondary town site established itself for nearly 30 years at the southern portion of the mine adding another 12 homes or so. Bremner Mining Camp is extremely remote and can only be reached by airplane or long range hiking. The closest road is about 70 miles in McCarthy, Alaska. No residents, though there was a volunteer summer ranger in place in June 2005. There is a visitor`s book to sign. One may stay in the bunkhouse. Other buildings include an old power generating station, a garage with an old Model T in it and a few other buildings. There is also a damaged stamp mill and high up the mountain are additional remains at the actual mine sites. This mining camp is extremely remote and in a very rugged Alaskan wilderness area. Access can be done through one of the air services in the area. Absolutely worth the trip.
REMAINS: Numerous buildings including bunkhouse.
Bremner is an old gold mining camp whose heydey was in the 1920`s and 1930`s, though it was worked until the early to mid 1960`s. A woman was struck and killed on the blind corner outside this well known (in Southeast Alaska) watering hole. It used to be known as the Kik, or Kiksaadi club, but now it is Rookies, a sports bar. The story is that the woman left the bar and was extremely drunk. She tried to wander into town on her own which was a common thing in this small town. Often a cab could be flagged or someone who knew you would pick you up along the way. She staggered into the road on the blind corner and was literally run over by a young man who had been drinking as well and driving a truck. She was so drunk that she actually got up despite the terrible, traumatic wounds that she had received and weaved about screaming and dying, not fully aware of what had happened to her. There were several witnesses to this tragedy as it was "bar closing" time and hundreds of people were around climbing into their vehicles and gathering for an "after hours" party. The third floor of this abandoned building a little girl died. After that the hotel closed off that part of the building. In the woods It is said that deep in the woods about half way down the road there is a place where a 5 year old little girl was killed. Legend has it that the little girl was helping her father chop wood for the fireplace in their small cabin where their mother and her little brother were awaiting. The father had put the ax in the tree so the girl couldn`t accidentally fall down on it. The little girl was said to be a very helping child and attempted to pull the ax out of the tree and chop wood herself. While her father was taking a break, the girl pulled the ax out of the tree and it came down and hit her in the head. The girl died instantly with blood running down her face. The father stayed by her side day and night in the cold bitter winter of Alaska and died of hypothermia. It has been said that you can see the little girl lying dead in her father`s arms while he mourns over her lifeless, cold, and white little body around 3:30 in the morning.... Old Copper railroad was railroad between Cordova and Valdez, AK. It was closed and covered with dirt and used as a road for access to back areas along the Copper River. There has been sightings of gravestones along the dirt road in the woods, and on second investigation, they would not be there. There was government housing being built in Chitna. It was closed down for a while because the workers would hear voices and children laughing, and tools would be misplaced right after workers would put them down. Sometimes at night in back woods along the dirt road you can hear voices and children laughing as well.

Anchorages oldest hotel is haunted by many things. Several guests have reported seeing a young girl walk the second floor hall. Also rooms 215 and 217 the TV`s will turn on and off at will also the water in the tub and sink will run by itself. Employees have reported to hear people coming down the stairs when the hotel is empty, and few have seen a man walk past the stairs.
