It is with great sadness this morning that we have learned three well known and highly respected storm chasers have lost their lives while chasing near El Reno, Oklahoma on Friday. Tim Samaras and his son Paul, and Carl Young were killed by the wedge tornado that occurred on Friday.

Following on the heels of a deadly 2011, when almost 1,700 tornadoes killed 553 Americans, 2012 has been a remarkably quiet year for tornadoes across the USA. May and June still had plenty of active storm chasing days on each tour, but as a whole; there was less activity nationwide throughout the year.

Not everything that I blog about is related to storm chasing. I have a professional background in Emergency Management and have held positions with Oklahoma Emergency Management in the past. Part of emergency management is the mitigation of hazards, and in Oklahoma this certainly means tornadoes because the state is in the heart of Tornado Alley.

For more than a decade my team and I have been leading tourist from around the world on incredible adventures in Tornado Alley chasing down the elusive supercell thunderstorm in search of tornadoes. Storm chasing isn't always fast paced excitement as one might expect from watching a 30-minute docu-drama on a cable network, but when storms start to explode in the skies of the Great Plains, the chase and the excitement heat up - and we're expecting plenty of action packed moments in 2013, just as there have been in all our previous seasons.

There are a few really good storm photos that continue to get recirculated on social networks as the "last big storm event". One of the most dramatic is a Florida waterspout that was captured accidentally by amateur photographer Fred Smith from his back yard near Lake Okeechobee on June 15, 1993.
