Museum of Contemporary Religious Art (MOCRA) Director Terrence E. Dempsey, S.J. will speak on “The Wounded Body of Christ and the Modern Social Conscience,” at a free public lecture on Sunday, March 28, 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow the talk.

Fr. Dempsey’s lecture will offer an overview of how images associated with the suffering and death of Jesus still have vitality, even in a pluralistic world. Images referring to the events of Good Friday have been employed by the artists of our time not only to manifest an expression of faith but more frequently to address life and death realities such as war, bigotry, poverty, oppression, genocide, sickness and pandemics in order to stimulate empathetic responses within the viewers.

Bruno David Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition by Cindy Tower. “Decadense” [sic] includes recent paintings of decrepit, isolated and condemned architectural settings. A fully illustrated color catalogue with writings by Charlie Finch and Angela L. Miller accompany the exhibition.

Originally a sculptor and performance artist, Cindy Tower lets her creative background shine through in paintings that have become visual evidence of performance. Raw in spirit and conviction, Tower’s highly articulated works engage the viewer in a visceral, otherworldly experience. Composite views of decrepitude become metaphors of bodily functions and reflect the political climate of our modern world. Wet, gloppy oil paint is applied in a loose yet precise manner in which subjects continuously dematerialize and reemerge. Tower’s painting practice mirrors her concept of gradual accumulation that not only provides an exhausting, claustrophobic sensation but also raises questions regarding the complexity and level of exchange that occurs in our modern world. Presenting the themes of consumption, intimacy, obsolescence and loss, the paintings are an overwhelming celebration of materials and process. They provide the viewer with an intuitive, physical experience that both engages and engulfs him or her in the self-contained environment of each artwork.

Born in Alamogordo, New Mexico, Cindy Tower received her B.F.A. from Cornell University and was a forerunner of the Williamsburg art scene (New York City) in the early eighties. She went on to obtain her M.F.A. in 1988 from the University of California, San Diego, where she studied under Eleanor Antin and Allan Kaprow. In 2005, she settled in St. Louis to paint disappearing industries. In addition, she has taught at Washington University in St. Louis, The New York Studio School in New York and Savannah College of Art and Design. Tower has exhibited nationally and has been the focus of numerous one-person exhibitions including the New Museum in New York. Her work has been reviewed in national publications, including Art in America and The New York Times. The Contemporary kicks off April with a group of artists for the Machine Project. We can expect performance/installation art, a potpourri of happenings and probably big crowds.

Los Angeles-based artist Emily Lacy will be working with ideas of physical auditory signal and temporal delay and will create a wellspring of musical environments. Drawing on folk and electric influences, Lacy produces soundscapes that engage the image of “the musician” as it occurs and recurs throughout mythological history and folklore.

Some may go to the museum looking for some art, but expect the unexpected, there’s something for everybody–technology, natural history, and literature. Add in music and food–and whoopee, these events will likely be gate-crashing blockbusters.

Saturday, April 3 features sauerkraut and kimchi. Throw in some folk-singing, banjo-playing and a raffle to win a Musical Trip to the Dentist.

After posting those taxes on April 15th go have hot dogs, sausages, and beer at the museum. Yes, art museums are no longer stuffy places just for looking at things.

Jot down on a calendar the dates March 31 – April 18 and go get smash-up details here.

Ron Andrews, lets out a yell, “St. Louie, Missouri” and segues into yodeling the hard time blues. Improvising some lyrics as he goes along, it’s easy to see why two years ago NBC featured Andrews as “The Singing Barber.” When the salmon weren’t biting, he made good entertainment for his companions on a recent fishing expedition on Lake Michigan.

Commenting on his network appearance, Andrews says, “One of the TV producers said for me to give Pat Bullard a good haircut while I was singing. I was cutting it real close and, about half way through, Bullard saw how close I was cutting his hair and bolted out of the chair. He had me finish by cutting the Stage Manager’s hair. He told me to cut his hair close, and I did; I cut off his pigtail.”

Stephanie Garvey, the Manager of Special Events and Marketing at Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club, and members of her staff gathered at the Veiled Prophet Parade Den (VP organization) on Saturday, August 15th, to create art on the exterior of a Metro Bus. VP Maids participated as a community service project, working alongside the Club’s boys and girls. According to Garvey, the VP den provided a perfect space, out of the elements, and grilled a delicious barbeque lunch for all.

Artistic Director for the Veiled Prophet Parade, Bill Griffin, welcomed the kids to this third annual “happening.” The kids work in the same creative space where the floats for the Veiled Prophet Parade (part of the annual “Fair St. Louis”) are designed and built. And everyone seemed delighted with the event and with the results of the work!

Every summer for the past fifteen years he’s been traveling from St. Louis to Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and bringing back a cooler full of salmon. The last weekend in July, Bostonian Joe Briere, joined Barker and two St. Louisans, Jim Lieber and me, for an early Saturday morning fishing trip several miles out on the lake.

Although we had great fun and the four of us boxed two fish apiece, this was nothing like the year 2007, when each fisherman in Barker’s group caught the limit of five fish each–all within an hour or so of sunrise.

Much of the work on the boat, including the rigging of sixteen fishing lines, is done by Randy Even (http://u-charters.com) owner of the boat “Sorry Charlie.” –Dickson Beall

The drive from St. Louis is less than six hours when traffic cooperates. Barker’s group usually leaves Friday morning and, after an early night’s rest, boards the boat Saturday morning at 3:30 for about five hours of fishing on Lake Michigan. The group fishes again early on Sunday morning and, after a late morning breakfast, heads back to St. Louis in time for very fresh salmon dinner.

The last weekend in July ‘09, Barker was joined on his Sunday morning fishing excursion by Ron Andrews, a singing barber from the St. Louis suburb of Florissant, Jim Armour and myself. Although Andrews and I were new to fishing, each fisherman was able to brag about the fish he caught.

Boat skipper Randy Even (http://u-charters.com) and his first mate do most of the heavy lifting on these trips and, although Barker says Even is “intense,” the reasons are clear. He wants every group to catch fish and have fun. That certainly happened on this trip. There were lots of laughs, and Andrews did some singing–sailor kind of songs, so send the children to bed.

This video is the Sunday version of a 2-part series, with the Saturday version also posted on St Louis View, as well as on www.stlouisan.com. –Dickson Beall
