I started out this DJ thang with playing drum & bass vinyls. People told me I should learn to mix house first, before moving on to more demanding drum & bass. I shot back by playing it for a year, before moving on to Acid House and later, Detroit.

In those days, the golden 90´s and the early 00´s, Goldie was in the same status leauge as Richie Hawtin, Carl Cox, Sasha and Sven Väth. Combined. His imprint, Metalheadz gave rise to as many tattoos as Richie Hawtins Plastikman dito.

Goldie, aka Clifford Price, was the one who transformed the genre to something more than an internal affair of London/Briston/Brighton. The rowdy Jungle scene had made little waves outside these cities, although artists such as A Guy Called Gerald and J Majik and naturally likes of Fabio and Grooverider had scored some early success beyond the deep dungeons.

Sampling gun shots in early drum & bass / jungle records is untill today testament of how rowdy the nights actually could get. A gun shots in the records every now and then kinda took the edge of the real gun shots being fired occassionally, is the rumour.

Goldie transposed it all and surpassed genres also by incorporating much of the jazz elements and work with the likes of David Bowie, Noel Gallagher and KRS-One. Without him and his stardom, it is rather hard to say what would have become of the genre.

This year Goldie is back with a retrospective box titled ”The Alchemist: The Best Of Goldie 1992-2012”, named after his favourite book by Paulo Coelho, and a world tour, now heading to Sweden.

Make sure to catch up with Goldie and a night of mesmerizing Amen Breaks and orchestral drum & bass on Inkonst , Malmö this Saturday 25th May.

Here is the new video, “Everything” from Maya Jane Coles, a 25 year old British-Japanese Producer/DJ. Maya typically takes full control of production duties on most of her music, writing, producing, mixing and engineering everything herself. On this track she is assisted by Karin Park. Her debut album, ‘Comfort’ is due early July.’

Excellent!!!

First out this week is Amann Berrouiguet who goes under moniker Amman in Music. The french, Grans-based producer sing in English over his own tracks. Sunrise is as good, as summer smelling and and as french house pop as it gets. Best I’ve heard since Phoenix, maybe better.

Here we have another french connection. Actually a swedish producer called Bowyer Hawks who live half of the year in Paris. The upcoming laid back deep house release on Raw Matter recordings, France got a mile-deep bass, floating chords and a ghostly voice pondering over some very dark thoughts.

We see dozens of bootlegs send to us as “promo only” every day. But this one sticks out like a rainbow in the world of gray. Remixing Michael Jackson puts quite a load of pressure on the expect result. But the Slinky Glamour of Peru based Blankhaus records succeeds exceptionally well. Even though I would prefer Michael’s original voice rather than this extremely pitched down version. Available as free download on the 22nd of May.

We travel back in time on our music journey, to the house sound of Chicago in the late 80s. Or at least one might think so. The first 12″ release on Manchester based No Dough Music feels like an instant classic despite being released May 2013. With the classic “dance-til-you-drop” synth line, Need a Friend sounds like the early work of Frankie Knuckles or Inner City. Yet with a modern long player arrangement.

James Welsh brings it a step deeper and adds additional vocals. The B-side is another piano driven house production called End of a beginning including and a lovely remix by Daniel Solar & Andi de Luxe.

German producer, Matt John, makes his full package debut for Cocoon Recordings May the 27th, with ‘The Keys’ LP, following his contribution to ‘The Blue Storm’ on the labels ‘Compilation K’ album.

Matt John – The River

[Audio clip: view full post to listen]

Matt John found fame in the hey day of the stripped, minimalistic electronic music movement of the 2000’s, releasing original works and remixes for the likes of Minus, Perlon, and Bar25, a label born out of the Berlin- based nightclub of the same name, where John was a resident DJ. This residency opened up the opportunity for John to showcase his twisted, hypnotic style to the open-minded souls of the city and hone in on what would become his signature sound on display throughout this package.

The unique style and vibe of Matt John is displayed from the get go with ‘Interview’, built around tight analogue drums, spoken word vocals and drawn-out, echoing effects that built an intense atmosphere full of depth. ‘Angel’ follows, employing direct 808 rhythms and reverse string melodies resulting in a dark and hedonistic vibe. John’s twisted vibes are brought to the forefront in ‘Monogram’, which features his signature bleeped out, glitchy style. The vibrant, Jazzy tones of ‘The River featuring Marc Lorbeer’ veer things in a more musical direction with evolving piano progressions, while ‘Ocean Inside’ embraces a more contemporary aesthetic with dubby touches, ethereal synths and gritty low-end tones.

Matt John – Britz Wind

[Audio clip: view full post to listen]

‘My Pocket’ follows, tipping its focus towards a more percussive-led style, with sprinklings of jazz also thrown into the mix for good measure. Title track ‘The Keys’ employs crunchy drums, bulbous sub-bass and preachy vocals uttering ‘enter the signs of today’. ‘Britz Wind’ takes things deeper, indicating the winding down of the LP, while track nine ‘The Surf Owl’ further displays John’s ability to create the bizarre in amongst the beautiful, featuring melting pot of heavy beats and synthesized bird-sounds, a creation that undeniably unique and forward thinking.

‘Today’ opts for a moody arpeggiated style bass line as its driving force while murmuring vocal lines and penetrating guitar licks create a distinctive electronic workout. Last up to close the release is ‘Froydish’ a hypnotic cut with sounds that follow a more contemporary direction, forming a soft and warm ending for a heavy album.

HMWL Podcast is here again, this month a tiny bit late. But hey, since the spring is here it’s hard to stay indoors browsing our never-ending stream of new promos. The mix contains recent and future releases from labels like Cadenza, Drevkollektivet, Fukai, Culprit La, WMWL, Off Recordings and Kling Klong. Enjoy with pleasure.

1. Sasch – Hearts & Minds (Mario Aureo Remix) [Steyoyoke May 13th]
Out on 12″ on Steyoyoke Records on May 13th. Digital May 27th. Mario Aureo remix is our top pick from the labels forthcoming 11th release. Deep, harmonic and warm. Perfect show-starter.

Nick Vivych aka Atomic is a talented, yet unknown Toronto based electronica, dance and drum & bass producer. His Bedroom Oceans album can be found here and is yet to be released.

City evening is the latest production coming out of hi studio. It’s interesting how a certain artwork can lift up a track to a whole new level. I immediately feel the neo-nostalgia of a big city dweller looking at the cover art. One can almost hear Nick’s mesmerizing synths fade in and breath freely over the big cities never ending skyline.
