Like many aging rock bands, nu-metal veterans Slipknot have a Ship of Theseus quality to them. A decent chunk of the classic lineup has departed, most recently longtime DJ Sid Wilson, who was kicked out about a month ago for reportedly being a jerk. Before that, a decade after taking over the kit from founding drummer Joey Jordison, Jay Weinberg got the ax in 2023, which left him "heartbroken and blindsided." But Slipknot are more equipped for membership changes than some bands, owing to the grotesque masks each member wears. The quasi-anonymity also affords them a Daft Punk-like ability to not look old onstage, which surely amplifies their already considerable appeal to younger audiences. When you add all those teenagers rocking Slipknot tees to the pool of longtime fans, you apparently have enough people to fill up a bunch of stadiums.

Much like his old Saddle Creek labelmate Conor Oberst, longtime Cursive frontman Tim Kasher is a director now. A couple of years ago, Kasher made his directorial debut with an independent found-footage horror feature called Who's Watching. I haven't seen it yet, but you can imagine that a film about a creepy, obsessive stalker might have certain resonance with some of Kasher's lyrics. Kasher also did the music for Who's Watching, and a soundtrack album is coming next month. Today, Cursive share the new song that they recorded for the movie.

Erasure Announce New Album Radio!! Radio!!: Hear “Wings Of Love”

Synthpop wizard Vince Clarke was responsible for some of the most indelible jams of the early '80s, but he took a while to find a stable artistic partnership. Clarke wrote most of the song's on Depeche Mode's classic 1981 debut Speak & Spell, then left the group. He formed Yazoo with Alison Moyet, but they only released two (excellent) LPs before breaking up. Finally, Clarke looked for collaborators by placing an ad in NME, and that's how he found the singer Andy Bell. They became the duo Erasure, and they've been working together ever since.

We're nearing the release of one last opus from Athens, Georgia's Olivia Tremor Control, the psych-pop cult favorites and a core fixture of the Elephant 6 collective. Bill Doss and Will Cullen Hart, the Lennon and McCartney of the OTC, are no longer with us. But before they died — Doss in 2012, Hart in 2024 — they began work on a double album called The Same Place. Their bandmates finished the 27-track project, and it's coming out next month, the band's first album in 27 years.

Right now, I'm about halfway through a great three-hour interview with Have Heart/Fiddlehead frontman Pat Flynn on Mutually Assured Destruction/Eliminators frontman Ace Stallings' hardcore podcast Forum Of Passion. It's a great listen. Flynn really knows how to talk about his own life and hardcore music at the same time, eloquently talking about how it feels to be a middle-aged professional — he's a high-school history teacher in his everyday life — who's still knee-deep in this stuff. Flynn has chronicled his own growth in his music, and it's all over Fiddlehead's great recent record Baby I'll Change, one of the year's best EPs. He and his band also brings that eloquence and gravitas to the stage.

Back in April, the influential Swedish singer/rapper hybrid Yung Lean and the French producer GENER8ION went viral with their "Storm" video. Directed by Romain Gavras, the video stars Yung Lean as the bully at a fancy, futuristic boarding school. In the lengthy final scene, he wears a suit and tie and stands on bleachers amidst a large group of dancers, also wearing suits and ties. Intense choreography ensues. Gavras captures the whole sequence from a wide angle, framing a stoic, smoking Yung Lean amidst a heaving throng of humanity.

Chuck Varga, GWAR’s Sexecutioner, Dead At 68

GWAR founding member Chuck Vargo, known as Sexecutioner, has passed away. Varga was battling cancer; the band set up a blood donation campaign in April and then launched a fundraiser in June to help Varga and his wife Bambi pay for medical bills. His death was announced on Sept. 25 by GWAR bassist Casey Orr aka Beefcake The Mighty. Varga was 68.

Rappers old enough to remember “Slow Jamz” and “Jesus Walks” decide they need a party anthem and a conscious rap song. People who thought good kid, m.A.A.d city was the best album of the 2010s suddenly realize that they can’t have a classic album without voicemail recordings from their aunty or a song where they’re “more vulnerable than ever.” If the church choir on his new album-opening song “Mercy” weren’t enough of an indication, a recent interview with Billboard makes it more than a little clear that AZ Chike was trying to make one of those albums.

Palo Alto singer Remi Wolf started off as a kind of alt-pop artist, but she seems to be inching ever-closer to actual pop music. Wolf's new album Mud comes out next month, and we've already posted the singles "Twiggy" and "Bottle." Today, she shares "I Won't Cry," a big, bruised old-school ballad with some country and some Southern rock in its DNA. It's got a big, melodramatic chorus, and she really sinks her teeth into it. Wolf co-produced "I Won't Cry" with Jack DeMeo and Solomonphonic, and the three of them co-wrote it with Gigi Grombacher and Jamie McLaughlin. In a press release, she says:
