According to an industry survey conducted by Hospitality Advisors and Smith Travel Research for the week ending July 11, the average cost of a hotel room in Hawaii was $172 per night, a plunge of more than 18% from the same period in 2008.  Maui room rates saw the largest decline, sinking 22.6%, but occupancy on Maui is holding relatively stable year over year.  Our clients are finding the lowest-priced rooms on Oahu, where the survey shows the average is at $149 per night, dropping 18% from 2008.  Big Island hotel rates fell 9% and Kauai rooms are 14% lower than 2008. In addition to lower room rates, hotels are offering free nights, complimentary room category upgrades and meals as promotional offers.

Waikiki’s newest luxury hotel is taking reservations for hotel rooms beginning November 16, 2009.

Stellar Travel staff members recently received a preview training session of the 462 hotel rooms.  All room categories include a kitchen, and luxurious studio, 1 or 2 bedroom suites have mountain, partial ocean view or ocean front accommodation options.  The 38-story tower includes 464 private, residential condominiums that sold out in one day.   The hotel will also feature a Laurent Tourondel’s BLT Steak restaurant and the Spa at Trump.  It is located adjacent to the new Waikiki Beach Walk area and across the street from Waikiki Beach.

Today went to snorkel at famous Kahalu’u Beach Park near Keahou Bay.  But after renting our gear we read the pamphlet and the Hawaiian department in charge of the marine parks has requested that no one enter because too much human use is harming the ecosystem and the reef is dying.   We decided that we did not want to add to this so we kept driving.

Instead we went north to Kekaha Kai State Park between the airport and the Four Seasons.  Beautiful secluded beach reached by about a 20 minute drive over really rough lava road.    Not many people and the snorkeling is good if not great as the water is rougher.  But did see a sea turtle and usual assortment of fish.  Facilities are limited - basically bathroom is a port - o - potty with a shed built around it and that is it.  However, fun thing is it is directly in the flight path for the airport.  At one point we all stood waste deep in the ocean and watched a 747 landing directly above our heads - pretty surreal and cool thing to see so this spot is worth the trek for those looking for an out-of-the way place with a little bit of adventure but not too much.

What is the cruise ship? There are wide differences between ships and between each cruise line.  We have industry knowledge and travel agent insider information so you’ll know the actual age of the ship, onboard dining options, stateroom square footage and even closet size!   And, if you are thinking “well, we won’t spend much time in our stateroom”, you’ll spend more time than you think in your stateroom.

What is the itinerary? Cruise lines are including more ports of call and interesting shore excursion programs but careful review is needed.  What about the weather that time of year?  Do you prefer more days at sea?  Are the ports reached by dock or tender boats?  Is there another cruise line that is offering a similar, but better itinerary?

What is the stateroom category offered?

Ocean-view can mean many things.  Is it a full-size window or a porthole?  And most importantly, where on the ship is your stateroom located?  Will your balcony view be obstructed?   On some cruise lines, lower prices are available if you agree to accept a stateroom assignment one week prior to sailing.  Most experienced cruisers don’t like those kinds of surprises.

What is the true cost?

A cruise line is offering “Two-for-One” cruise fares but upon closer examination, their promotion means 50% off on certain portions of the cost, not the entire cost of the cruise.  What about receiving a $1,000 per person shipboard credit, free airfare or free shore excursions?  Does that mean the cruise fare is inflated higher or is it a true value to the bottom line?  An experienced cruise expert will help sort it all out.

From the Cell Phone Lot to Baggage Claim (Arrivals Drive):
Take a right out of the Cell Phone Lot and make left on Air Cargo Road (sign reads to terminal). Follow signs to Arrivals.
