Click.to: Your Copy and Paste Shortcut App For The Desktop

I am sure most of the folks reading this blog post, have problems when it comes to “copy and paste”. Especially when it’s copying a quote from your favorite blogger or entrepreneur to Twitter or Facebook. Click.to is one of those applications that simplifies the same. While I can go about writing lines and lines describing what it does, Click.to app is simply your “shortcut” to copy and paste.

Now some of you might just think of this to be a pretty pointless app to share, but to prove you remotely wrong, one must try. The sheer simplicity it offers, saves time (at least in my case), as it lets you select specific applications that you want Click.to to paste your selection. This is done via a neat popup bar that appears anytime you select something to copy. From the bar you opt where the copied item needs to be pasted and it’s done, no switching windows or tabs or even to your Excel sheet or Word document. Plus, it sits in your system tray monitoring your clicks, what applications have you used to paste the items, giving users an overview of how many clicks, copy and paste actions they perform. Though I really wish they had some way to track the time spent in performing the same actions.

Likewise, you can select what online services or desktop tools you want Click.to to function for. These include Word Docs, Excel Sheets, Twitter, Google Plus or Facebook to name a few.

The service has grown significantly in the last one year, closing major partnerships with names like eBay, Skype and HootSuite and is available for both the Windows and the Mac OSX.

Adzine, A Pakistani Startup Experimenting With What’s Already In The Box

Adzine is a new startup based in Pakistan focused on a more traditional business of Print Ads, however the founders have taken this initiative primarily as a study and have plans on taking a Digital Route with their Startup. We think it is quite logical for them to experiment with something that’s already in the box before attempting a new approach, especially in a market that is still adopting (fast) to the startup culture. Following is an interview with the Co-Founder, Khurram Salahuddin Khan:

Q.1 Who are you and what’s your background?

The adzine has been co-founded by myself and Syed Irshad Ali.

I have been into the IT industry since 1995 and have been involved in developing softwares, implementing industry standard solutions and managing IT infrastructures in larger organizations. I also run in parallel a virtual web/software solution company with name “BizKey Solutions” which has done business with few small/medium businesses in Karachi over the past one year. BizKey Solutions has also been involved in setting up a small Call Center for “Bell Canada”, a canadian telecommunications and media company.

Syed Irshad Ali is coming from advertising background and has been engaged with few of largest advertising firms in Karachi, Pakistan.

We have tried to put together the experience of both IT and Advertising in our new Startup “adzine” the Advertisements Magazine.

Q.2 What has been your occupation/Experience and the organization’s you have worked in?

As I explained earlier, I myself have served a few companies in my past 17 years experience as an IT consultant and software developer and then I moved towards doing something of my own and on my own. Syed Irshad Ali has been a Sr. Artist and Visualizer in differnet advertising agencies in Karachi, Pakistan.

Q.3 Is Adzine your first Startup? Tell us something about what it does?

No it is not first and won’t be the last.

The adzine promotes your business while you concentrate on your core business operations. We design your ad, publish it in a low-cost, high-quality advertisements magazine and deliver in major areas of your own city Karachi. The adzine works in a similar fashion as advertisements channels do on television but the only difference is that people can’t watch their favorite television shows and view a business ad simultaneously.
Q.4 With Print Media losing traction and digital on the rise, what made you opt for a Print based Promotion/Classified magazine?

You are right to some extent and frankly speaking we have no plans of publishing a print version of adzine for the rest of our lives. You will soon be hearing good news from our platform where we will be doing new things at the right time, but before we do anything out of the box, it is important for us to have an experience of something which is already “in the box”.

Few of our friends also criticize us for setting up something like an ad magazine in this age of social media. We understand the importance of new technologies and the paradigm shift that industry is going to have very soon. But our friends forget the reality in which most of our population live in. In our country, newspapers are read more than online news websites. The corporations/business still spend more amount on television and billboards than digital media, only because they have still more reach than digital media. You are right that people are shifting to digital media but that of course is a time taking process and there must be something to fill the gap during this transition phase. When reading international blogs or international twitter feeds, getting an inspiration from startups like facebook, twitter, pinterest etc, we should also be aware of the fact that different culturs and regions have different way of setting up things.

Q.5 What’s your business model and how are you generating revenue

Business Model is quite simple. We have a print version of our ad magazine right now and we also promote the same ads through our facebook timeline and twitter feeds.

The ad has a price according to it’s placement and size. For first 20 days we collect/design ads and we spend last 10 days in printing/publishing and distributing it. As you understand, each startup in the beginning requires investment, leaving profits aside. We, too, right now are focusing on promoting our business rather making any money out of it.

Q.6 Who is your primary competition and how are you different from them (Home Express for one)

We are not in competition to anyone. But we do understand that we will have to give something different if we want to retain in the market. Frankly speaking, we are not doing anything different than the ones which are already there but we intend to do soon as we grow further. We are focusing more on our hardwork, dedicated service, honesty and quality-print. With that, we have our people engaged in spreading same ads over internet using our Facebook and twitter feeds.

Q.7 How do you intend to grow in the next 2-3 years.

This would be quite early to give any comments over our business plans for next 2-3 years but yes we have to cover this first milestone (print version) as early as possible and we will be planning further based on the success of our first milestone. Broadly speaking, we might be doing everything related to print/digital advertising in future.

iPad 3 Released Has 264 PPI Retina Display, Quad Core A5X Chip, 5MP Camera–Just a retuning of The iPad 2

Apple has announced the new iPad 3 (iPad HD) that boasts 4G capability. The iPad 3 will be on sale on March 16 as we had already stated and is available for Pre-Orders today. It has also been stated that the device will be available across 32 more countries from March 23. Great, so we don’t really have to wait ages before the next generation of the iPad is seen in the markets.

Some key features include:

An iSight camera on the front
A rear camera that runs at 5MP, with a backside illuminated sensor, 5 element lens and a hybrid IR filter.
10 hour battery life or 9 hours on 4G
Priced at: $499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB, $699 for 64GB. And $629, $729, and $829 for 4G activated iPad 3.

While all the blogs are buzzing in with the keyword dense posts, trying to make the most of this Apple event, I must admit that despite being a brilliant device this iPad 3 is, I see that the company itself is now more focused on crunching the numbers. Why wouldn’t it? They have maintained the reputation of being the most innovative company for quite some time, giving us products ranging from the iPhone to the iPad (and of course the irritating FanBoys), but they obviously had to run out of this creativity and make most in the numbers. The iPad has outsold every other PC manufacturer. Consider the iPad to be a PC (for an instant) and it has sold over 15.4 Million units compared to HP’s 15.1 Million. That’s phenomenal and with the iPad holding 60% market share with no one being in sight of competition, they have actually dominated the industry by making the iPad a benchmark. Great.

What this is actually doing now is fast transforming the company into the modern day Microsoft. No harm in it as almost every organization out there eventually becomes so. The idea is maintain hegemony and over the course of time focus on what the market share has to say. Hence Apple will eventually be doing nothing different in the course of time.

Other than that Apple also announced the release of the new Apple TV that supports 1080P. This also will be available next week.

The iPad 3 Will Have Haptic Feedback And Probably SenSeg Is Behind It

While the rumor mill gets active as the Apple event and the inevitable announcement of the iPad 3 / iPad HD, there is one rumor which is believable. We have seen how Apple has advertised next generation of the iPad, (We have something you really have to see. And Touch) and with the word “touch” we think it has everything to do with the exclusion of the Physical Home Button that has managed to exist on the otherwise one button Apple devices (the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad). News is also rolling out that Senseg, a Helsinki based firm is probably giving the new iPad it’s button free existence.

The new iPad might just have Steve Jobs’ idea come true – and with Haptic feedback, already present across many mobile devices, we might just see it happen with the iPad 3. The reports have been detailed out across all notable blogs, including The Next Web, where Mathew Panzarino stated:

But something like a screen that could make you feel like it was touching you back, that could provide a truly translative experience with a simple piece of glass. That would be an amazing, almost magical thing, and very Apple.

And Greg Anderson at the Arctic Startup about Senseg:

The company has perfected the technology, and has spent the last two years focusing on the value chain needed to put the Senseg Tixel into production. We also know the company has traveled extensively through Asia, talking to manufacturers.

Perfection qualifies the firm to be in line with Apple’s ideology and dynamics. It won’t be surprising to see it implemented.

iPad 3 or As Some Say the iPad HD Releasing on March 16

Call me an Anti-Apple person (I am avoiding explicit words here) but the truth is that news of the next generation of the iPad is going to be called the iPad HD and not the iPad 3. iPad HD, HTC Desire HD, isn’t that a similar naming convention adopted by Apple rivals? Ones that Apple along with his fanboys detests so much? I thought these guys tried to do things a bit differently from the common and the usual, but they couldn’t come up with something different in terms of the name. After of course manufacturing devices like the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad that boast remarkable architecture and hardware?

These are but rumors that have been circling the blogs minting hits out of the Apple products and the upcoming iPad 3/iPad HD. As for the question when is the iPad 3 releasing? The word is it will be announced today at the Apple Event and will be hitting the shelves on March 16 (not confirmed). As for the features include improving the Retina Display Resolution by twice the existing one. Other than it will also feature a quad core processor, LTE connectivity to name a few. We are waiting the releasing of this device and we are confident that it will be something BIG.

Kicksend Brings Its Photo Sharing App To The iPhone

According to a research conducted by the NDP Group, 27 percent of all photos taken in 2011 were taken via smartphones, which showed a 10 percent increase from 2010. During same period, photos taken from a traditional camera dropped from 53 percent in 2010 to 44 percent in 2011. Those are just numbers at the end of the day, but for anyone who has an eye to spot where the user preferences are shifting will plan and execute smart. The idea therefore is to bring an intuitive and useful file sharing experience to mobile users. Kicksend’s Co-founder and CPO, Brendon Lim stated in a release:

Touchscreens, gesture recognition, voice search, etc have all become a very native feature of all smartphones and with the purpose being “simple” it makes little sense why things should be complicated. What Kicksend plans to do is to rid iPhone users of sharing limit by enabling users to share batches of high quality photos and videos with their friends instantly. The sharing could be done with those in your list or by specifying email address of the recipients.

The Kicksend advantage here is that recipients don’t have to signup in order to receive files. You send it, they receive it ,in fact almost half of Kicksend users aren’t registered users of the service. That added with the ability to share up to 30 photos at a time, with no compromise on quality added with the option to share files that are otherwise too large to be shared via email makes it a one stop solution for your daily file sharing needs. Again there are dedicated services in the form of Drop Box, Box.com for larger file sharing but more often these services require recipients to sign up or authenticate downloading the shared files. Kicksend rids its users of this extra process. There are also the likes of YouSendIt and WeTransfer that are very simple to use, however the links where recipients can download the files expire within a certain time frame. Not sure if Kicksend has something similar, which we think it shouldn’t primarily for the fact that it offers registered users a space to store their files.

Kicksend hasn’t limited itself to a sharing services dedicated to a platform or particular format. The idea it has been built on is “sharing” and this could be anything literally giving the startup an open path for scalability. You have services like Batch, Photovine that are also photo sharing applications but somewhat appear to be narrowed to a particular set of users. For example Batch needs you to have a Facebook account or Photovine is more about community sharing and building stories around mobile photos. But those are interest or purpose based applications that target their consumers in the best way possible. We might not call Kicksend the most innovative of startups or one that has transformed the industry, but it won’t be wrong to state it improves the experience of sharing. The objective moving forward for any startup is to strike where it matters the most and that target is the User Experience. If any app or service improves that it is bound to get attention, it is bound to scale.

Summing up the Kicksend App Features:

iPad 3 Release Is On March 7 At Apple Event

Like it or not, Apple is dropping a bomb on March 7 and we expect the iPad 3 to be announced at the upcoming Apple Event. There are lots of expectations in terms of making a lot of improvements. Some of these include improving the Retina Display Resolution by twice the existing one. Other than it will also feature a quad core processor, LTE connectivity to name a few.

We are waiting the releasing of this device and we are confident that it will be something BIG.

Response: Print is Dead! Long Live Print?

This post is a follow up comment to @Jordan Kurzweil published on TechCrunch (Print is Dead! Long Live Print?)

I guess the Print Media is dying a slow and gradual death ( i am generalizing my statement), as in many regions globally the Print is very deeply rooted. What i think is missed out by many Print Pundits is they confuse "moving online" with "compromising on Quality (we are not bloggers syndrome)".

Many other papers simply consider the Web to a "republishing tool" for their printed Daily (We have the Express Tribune in Pakistan that needs to have some sense of online journalism). What in my opinion is going to bring death to any print material is the replacement at the top, those there have massive issues of letting go of the "control" they have enjoyed over content, policies, transparency, etc. The though of letting go just sounds way to dangerous for them. Taking a note from your post at TechCrunch:

If you do one thing, make your editors and contributors work like bloggers. Espouse transparency and accessibility. This is what builds trust and connection with your audience. Nudge writers off the cliff into the cacophony of social media, and redefine enterprise journalism to encompass not only reportage, but also building an audience of followers, and responsibility for driving traffic to their own work product.

The very concept of “Engaging” is what is alien to many print publications out there, it demands transparency, it demands immediate attention. And while editors do a perfect job at setting the perfect tone, perfect grammar, etc going online puts you up front to have an uncontrolled engagement. Uncontrolled engagement is Harmful (for them), it provokes reaction and as much as it would take you higher, it has the potential to be apocalyptic for your brand.

So What Print Media is Going To Do?

They would usually start by recruiting top bloggers to contribute. Which in my opinion is actually having a blogger as a lab monkey (no offense to any blogger) and see what reactions does he get. Bloggers are bound to share what they write and give references and this provides brands a set of reactions to test it further. This is exactly why large Papers started off with a small blog section somewhere in the sitemap before they actually started to consider it a “real thing”. We know that no change is immediate, but it is time that the print giants take huge leaps.

Why Print Media Should Go Digital?

Because when you engage your audience, you are engaging your workforce more efficiently. Your writers are on their toes to keep an eye on all comments. Comments may demand clarity, facts, wrong reporting, etc. You are actually promoting “active journalism” on your Digital property at the same time identifying the right people to give you the timely reports on localities. Think of becoming the Reuters at the micro level. We have seen how the Washington Post, etc have adopted to this model and they are doing really well. What needs to be done is simply change their concept of “monopolizing” the industry. Build a model that is Inclusive rather Exclusive. I guess the more readily they adopt to this the better they will leverage the digital media.

I might be wrong for saying this, but moving to digital might actually help save the Print Media.

What The Fuck Am I Doing?

I am 28, fast turning 29 and soon I will hit 30. I have a nice decent job, follow my hobbies, blog at a place or two and all that makes me ask a question; What the fuck am I doing? The more I lock years in the past the more I feel I am just wasting time. I am just being desperate or simply being realistic, I think I am finally beginning to ask the right question What the fuck am I doing?

Promoting Entrepreneurship, having my own startup, mentoring teenagers, or blogging on some blog out there. A lot of it boils down to resources, funding, finances and the very many entrepreneurs out there (specifically in my region) are sitting ducks like the almighty Bruce. Morons, guys like these make hate the very word that Entrepreneurship is. Did they succeed by chance? Well, I can’t help believing this. Perhaps they are old school entrepreneurs, who deserve to head every dinner and lunch and talk big, talk shit, that’s it.

There is another class that totally understands the concept. They make me feel like a toddler who has no idea what business is, what startups are about and how they actually function. These guys make me questions my self proclaimed “entrepreneurial skills” but then these guys are occupied with their work. They think way too beyond and my far fetched approach is too short termed and old school. Either I am in a totally wrong dimension or time frame or a brain dead mumbling moron worth nothing. I would gladly take the latter as it at least gives me a chances to rethink what I think about myself.

So what the fuck am I doing? Trying to find the purpose. I have waited patiently enough but I guess time comes close when I need to make plunges and leave myself amidst an ocean. I know I will drown for I know not how to swim, but I will at least get the taste of struggle, to fight and actually say that I am doing something.

But then, where will I find the right people? Apparently their memory only aids them while you have a job. Leave that and they usually clear their stash of data about you.

You shouldn’t follow @smohkim if you don’t want to fuck your life over.

F*CK! Hideous Sites Still Exist In 2012!

You know it when you get such requests and pitches. I personally hate the idea of startups putting up pitches and being so ridiculous! I mean you have an idea, want to help people, solve a problem but please, with all due respect invest some time in making your Website look pleasant instead of some unattended piece of garbage can. Especially when you want to be considered for a review.

Some guys just wont get it. The latest shock comes from this super spammer who has sent me two pitches with the same site bearing the same hideous look, so hideous that I even doubt its purpose of creation; help business and people connect or to kill them on their first visit. I know I am wasting time, but it needs to be made public just so that not another blogger falls prey to this monstrous thing. Well no one other than those who don’t value productivity. Massive Online Collaboration: ReCaptcha The Captcha

We thought about sharing an interesting story on Captcha and ReCaptcha. Thought we should share this on our blog too along with the video.

Captcha has been used for a long time now. So much that it has become the users Web Responsibility. However, Luis saw the bigger picture and he knew this time spent had to be utilized more intelligently (more human like), they came up with Re-Captcha, a startup that was later acquired by Google (obviously!).

The wealth, like always lay in the time spent in deciphering those captchas and typing them in. Seeing the opportunity, the idea came about at using the same technology to create something that would help do the impossible digitize books. The collaboration already exists, what was missed was essentially to get the same number of people to better utilize the same technology to do something more constructive. Call it massive online collaboration or whatever, ReCaptcha took the task of digitizing books using these 10 seconds of our time more constructively.

While a lot is explained in the video itself, I would take a few more lines to write down the advantages. This massive collaboration, possible only with the use of the Internet will have 750,000,000 people collaborate to help libraries digitize the books we have with us in the shortest possible time. The idea is simply to use real time, massive collaboration to create a digital library that would otherwise have taken a good number of years and cost a lot. Secondly, machines will never be better than humans and if you can get as much as 10% of the world population to the work for free, there’s nothing better.

Most iPhone 4S users are still waiting for a jailbreak for their device. It is more than a month now since iPhone 4S was officially released and still there is no news about Jailbreak availability. I believe the iPhone 4S users would still have to wait for some more time to get a tethered jailbreak for iPhone 4S.

It is really hard for people who used to enjoy jailbreak possible luxuries in their devices with previous iOS versions to wait for that long. A useful feature that was commonly used by iPhone users after jailbreaking their device is SBSettings toggles that enables you to quickly switch to some low-level functions like Airplane mode, Blutooth, Wi-Fi, etc. In this article we will explain how to create custom shortcuts on iPhone without jailbreak.

How to Create Custom Shortcuts on iPhone Without Jailbreak:

How To Create Text Shortcuts in iOS 5

Are you exhausted with typing long names, words and sentences and thinking how to generate shortcuts of text? Fortunately, one of the new characteristics of iOS 5 is capable to do that. Such as, instead of typing the complete sentence “On my way” you just need to type “omw” and iPhone will automatically change this short form to its actual full expression.

To check out how to put in your own shortcuts, following are the steps:

Go to launch settings
Click on Tab General
Then Tab Keyboard (at the bottom)
There you will see a section called Shortcuts where you can see the pre-created shortcut for ‘omw’.
Click on tab ‘Add new shortcut’
In phrase field, insert the complete phrase for which you want to create a shortcut.
In shortcut field, add the short form you want to replace the above phrase with.
Click Save.
If you want to edit a shortcut created, tap on the shortcut from keyboard menu.
To delete a shortcut, click on Edit option at top right corner of keyboard menu.

Now you have learned to create your personal shortcuts. These shortcuts work similar to auto-correct option, so there is nothing extraordinary you need to do to use them. Just type shortcut and you will see a pop up bubble with the actual phrase. Press space which allows the replacement with selected phrase, and striking the bubble will cancel the phrase replacement.

iPhone 4S Inefficient Battery Is A Software Problem

The diagnosis held by an iPhone app developer proves that iPhone is suffering from a chronic software problem. This test methodically proves that the much complained about battery problems are software based rather then hardware. Phew! a sigh of relief, well at least it can be cured rather then changing the over all hardware specs.

Two iPhone devices were tested independently. Both having the same hardware, iOS ver. 5.0.1. Their model and release date was similar. They were even bought from the same location and also using the same network (AT&T). Just to make sure all other differences are avoided to check for their battery performances avoiding hardware differences. The two phones however had different iPhone apps. stored. One was using beta applications to test while the other was a regular use iPhone with out any unorthodox applications.

The iPhone with newer applications registered a far less battery time compared to the regular iPhone. To further consolidate the investigation the iPhones were reset to factory settings. After their individual data was stored for backup. Then the data was restored on the phones only this time it was stored the other way round. That is the previously regular use phone was updated with beta and new applications.

As the phones were reversed so was the result. Shockingly enough this time the regular iPhone registered a far less battery usage time. Concluding that the applications have a direct impact on the power efficiency of the smart Phones. Lucky enough though iPhone people are already up for a newer OS that would increase the efficiency, giving us longer iPhone usage time.

iPhone 4s Coming Third While Android Phones Take The Top Two Spot

There has always been a constant niggling about how bad these smart phones are when it comes to their battery life. One should not forget the kind of task these gadgets are capable of. Though these devices are really smart bringing the functionality of a Desktop Computer in to your palms, they do need some serious energy to keep on with it. Once out of battery they are as dumb a machine can be.

We can’t obviously compare these to the first or second generations mobile devices. For example the Nokia phones that lasted days with a single recharge. Mobile back then were communication tools, SMS, calls, radio were all the high end features they offered. With the iPhone, Android devices, things have evolved, your mobile phones are pocket PCs. You can’t expect them to last for 7 days on a single recharge, however one can expect the manufacturers to build more powerful batteries. If not days, they should at least last for a day.

Coming back to the test. A more formal test has been conducted to formally calibrate, which of these high end smart phones has the most efficient and long lasting battery life. Each of these including the Droid Bionic, Epic 4g, Thunderbolt, iPhone 4s etc. were subjected to a video at 720p with full brightness and volume till the battery died.

The results were pretty unorthodox with iPhone 4S coming third and android phones securing the top 2 positions despite of all their battery issues. The table below shows a more detailed result of the test conducted.

With the results mentioned above, it is surprising why the iPhone 4S is ranked 3rd. Honestly I expected Android to do far worse, but that’s just my opinion. We will try and explore how we can extend battery life for the iPhone 4S and other Android Devices.

Entrepreneurs who participate in online retail should pay close attention to the recent relocation of Shopobot from San Francisco, CA to Seattle, WA. Amid rising concerns about online taxation, this Internet-based shopping company has relocated to the more financially stable city of Seattle, WA. It doesn’t take an MBA degree to know that the current economic crisis has affected companies’ sales, but now, online-based companies are unsure as to how online business will be taxed in the future. This has resulted in many companies relocating to different cities across the United States.

The economic crisis has left state governments short of funds, and they have begun to view the taxation of online sales as a source of potential revenue. This position is being encouraged by big-box stores such as Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Target. These companies have long resented the perceived cost advantage that online retailers gain from not having to pay local taxes. In California, a law was passed in June that attempts to force large online retailers such as Amazon tocollectsalestaxonpurchasesfromCaliforniaresidents. In response to this new law, Amazon quickly exited the California market by dropping over 10,000 affiliated businesses from their roster.

One of these affiliates was Shopobot. Dave Matthews and Julius Schorzman began their business with the online book shopper in mind, but an experiment tracking high-end camera equipment led the pair to adjust their fledgling company’s focus. The Shopobot app now tracks the price movements of high-end electronics across multiple sites such as EBay, Amazon, and Overstock. The app alerts shoppers to great deals they might otherwise have missed. Shopobot benefited greatly from being part of Amazon’s affiliate program, so when Amazon decided to pull out of California, the small start-up company lost a large portion of its revenue. The repercussions felt by Shopobot did not end with Amazon. Individual stores began to refuse to work with the company. They cited the company’s location in the state of California as the primary reason.

Faced with dwindling revenue and an uncertain future, Shopobot decided to relocate its company to Seattle, WA. In fact, the new company headquarters is just across the street from the Amazon headquarters. Shopobot did not relocate to avoid paying taxes. Amazon already collects tax on sales in Washington. The company moved because of the uncertainty of doing business in the state of California. Unanticipated fees and expenses can be the death of a small business.

The situation in California is a harbinger of things to come. State and local governments are searching for ways in which to generate revenue, and the taxation of the billion-dollar online retail industry is an attractive solution. Entrepreneurs that are heavily involved in online retail should pay close attention to their local government’s position regarding the taxation of online sales. Moving to a state with established laws regarding online business might be their best option. Pulling up stakes and moving is never cheap or easy, but if it means securing the future of a company, it can be the only correct choice.

Shopobot has survived its forced relocation, and the company appears to be thriving. Its technology may be simple, but there is a strong demand for such apps. Shopobot is currently looking to expand its operations in the near future and anticipates another round of fundraising efforts to begin very soon. Having a firm idea of how sales tax will affect projected revenues will certainly help in wooing investors.

Steve Jobs was great, so great that his death left a massive impact on every one around. To us Steve Jobs was more of a Mindset than just a man. Everyone who knew about the man, anyone who had ever used an Apple product. From the lovers of Macs to the iPod Touch, iPhone and the iPad, he gave everyone a reason to love their device and many more to own what he calls the rip off of Apple products (though I totally disagree with the last one). Steve Jobs book, the biography was certainly one of those that everyone anxiously waited for and with his death, the demand has grown by leaps and bounds. It appears Google has taken a dump with the dump of Google Buzz, Jaiku and many other services it plans to kill. It appears that Gmail is down globally and where it is working, it is very slow. Make that very very slow as a matter of fact. Any clues why Gmail is down?

We are are receiving quite a lot of updates via Twitter of almost everyone complaining about Gmail being down. It’s slow and dies out all of a sudden. Gmail is known for its service outages every year and it happens regularly, perhaps it’s this time of the year when they are busy updating features or something. But shouldn’t they inform users via an update? Jokes aside, I think with the bulk of users using Gmail and sending a billion emails to and fro, it is not a surprise if the service goes down. I don’t blame Google for the Gmail outage.

This comes from lighting that is changing how we are going to be quite literally seeing the future. LED lights have fast become a viable alternative to traditional lighting. And the technology doesn’t stop there. Aside this remarkable lighting technology being utilized in traditional vehicle bulbs and the underside of cool street cars this state of the art lighting technology is being used in some innovative ways. Now even our display devices are using the same technology.

Although the general feeling is often that alternative lighting is more expensive than standard lights, LEDs have become not only a cheaper method, but they are also superior in many ways. LED lights can now be purchased as a replacement for nearly all traditional screw-in incandescent or compact florescent bulbs and are profoundly more cost effective in many regards.

The LED Advantage

The incandescent light bulb, the staple of modern civilization, will cost you in its energy consumption over 5 to 10 times the price of its initial cost over its lifetime. As technology advanced we received the compact fluorescent light which uses only 25% of the same energy that a standard bulbs does. That is over 6 times longer. Yet with the new advances made with LEDs these bulbs have reportedly been able to last 10 times longer than the long lasting compact fluorescent. In addition to this, because the LED is not made with a filament and are solid structures these are far more durable, longer lasting, and can be used in a wider variety of creations. Combined with the comparative commercial cost, the LED has become over all a cheaper alternative to the standard bulb.

Besides basic lighting, such as in many of today’s new and more powerful flashlights, LEDs are also being used in nontraditional was such as displays that offer touch control because of their ability to have photo sensitivity. With LEDs constantly evolving and becoming cheaper there are no limits to what the possibilities are for this technology. It will be fascinating to watch what the future holds.

Google News: 190 Million Android Devices Activated, That’s Half A Million Daily!

576,900 Android Device activations a day is a mammoth number. And Google is rejoicing the number that prove the growing popularity of the Android platform. The number has gone up by almost 100,000 from June, when it was reported that Android activations total to 500,000 devices on a daily basis.

The total number for device activations now sits at 190 Million and taking Google’s earnings just shy of the $10 Billion mark. This tops their own expectations that were in the range of $9 Billion. The platform boasts of having half a million Android Developers, 450,000 to be precise and over 200,000 applications available for Android users to download. This brings their earnings from the Android mobile business alone to $2.5 Billion. Half a million daily activations is a very positive sign and shows how Google’s Android platform continues to penetrate the markets. It adds half a million devices daily to ensure there are more sets to display its ads and take charge of the Mobile Ad business.

Google had recently acquired Motorola Mobility and while everyone is worried how Google treats other manufacturers like Samsung and HTC, Google has no intentions to isolate them. However with such massive numbers, Google will definitely be looking forward to have its own device and make inroads in the mobile manufacturing business. I mean they already have to look up to Samsung and HTC for the Nexus devices. Maybe we will be seeing Google have the Nexus line exclusively coming out from its own assembly lines [more direct competition with the iPhone perhaps?].

Apple is still ahead with 250 Million iOS devices [soon to go further up with the iPhone 4S release]. But with the current rate of Google’s growth and the number of hardware devices it has to load its Android platform at, the number should be equaled soon.

While I was thinking that the iOS 5 is still some days away from the final release news broke out that it is out. Apple just now announced the release of the final version of the iOS 5 for the users, bringing with it the numerous improvements that had been promised.

This is turning out big with the iPhone 4S preorders hitting over 1 Million in a day, the iCloud released earlier and iPhone 4S to hit stores on October 14, things are about to change for iOS device users. While you wont be able to experience Siri until you actually own the iPhone 4S on iOS 5, you can always enjoy the improvements on the previous generations of the iPhone, iPad and the iPad 2 as well as the iPod Touch.

The iOS 5 kills the annoying notifications by introducing the Notification Center that puts all notifications in one tab at the top. No more facepalm experience with the mindless notifications. Many of you are restless to download the iOS 5 for your beloved Apple product so feel free to download the operating system for your device:

iPhone 4S Is Followed By iCloud Release, iOS 5 To Follow Soon

With the iPhone 4S sales hitting past the 1 Million mark in the first 24 hours, Siri getting all the positive press, Apple had little to delay its much talked iCloud. The cloud storage service which was to be released with the iOS5 has been pushed out today. With, users will be able to store their data on the virtual storage service.

The iCloud should pull Apple out of the misery that MobileMe brought forth. I mean Apple has been an industry changer in terms of mobile, computing and music devices in the likes of the iPhone, iPad and the iPod Touch, the company hasn’t been impressive in the online business. The iCloud is expected to change the game for Apple and how people use their iPhone, iPod and the iPad. The iOS 5 users will be given 5GB of free iCloud Storage. Of course this is for free and you can purchase extra space as per your requirement.

The space limits offered and the accompanying prices for each are:

$20 for 10GB iCloud Storage
$40 for 20GB
$100 for 50GB

The biggest advantage is that if the content uploaded is from an iPhone 4 or the iPad 2, iCloud will readily port the same items to other iOS devices. This includes porting data to your Macs as well.

While this is important users are also aware of the iTunes Match that lets you store your music collection on the cloud for a yearly fee of $25. This is currently limited to the US only but I am sure that we will be seeing a global release as well. The iTunes Match is the dream service for anyone having an entire collection of pirated music. What iTunes Match does is simply match your music with iTunes database to give you a fully legal copy for the crappiest music track you have.

I am not sure what Apple was thinking with the iTunes Match, maybe it thought we live in the perfect world where every owner has legal music.

The Avengers Teaser Trailer Is Creating Ripples

Just when we needed this. A break from all Apple news and something more interesting to look forward, the Avengers teaser has made it out and it is already firing up the Internet. The movie is set to be released sometime in early May 2012 to rock cinemas with the multi super-hero caste.

It will be interesting to see how the Avengers battle it out with the Justice League. If the Justice League movie ever comes out. Robert Downey Junior takes the limelight with his lines and I am sure that will be the case through out the movie. The only one coming close to him would be Samuel Jackson while others are more of showpieces, in my opinion.

I am greatly disappointed not seeing Edward Norton caste as the Hulk. I think he was the best actor to play the role.

Official Facebook iPad App

What had been in talks for almost a month now has finally turned to reality as the Facebook app for the iPad was released. This comes as the social network opened its arms to the mobile world by bringing the Facebook Platform to Mobile, bringing its third party app developers more tools to play with.

There are over 350 million users accessing Facebook each month via mobile devices that is a mammoth number for Facebook to completely leverage. Facebook Engineer Luke Shephard, stated that the development is still far from over and that they have only launched the Official iPad App. We will be seeing a lot of updates, especially with a closer integration of the virtual currency called the Facebook Credits. It will be interesting to see how this shapes up and how much usability does the entire tap to go experience brings to the iPad/iOS users.

iPhone 4S, Siri and Faster Browsing Shown In A Video

While the Apple product, the iPhone 4S has broken the record with 1 Million unit sales in just 24 hours we have first hand videos of the device as well. The video comes from China and shows the working of Siri and the benchmarks of the device.

The browser score for example on the iPhone 4S running the iOS 5 is 89567 compared to 44856 on the iPhone 4 running the iOS 5. Which is twice the score. This shows that the hardware overhaul has been very fruitful for the device and while it lacks the new design, it definitely wins the battle in performance. Though it is less than that on the Samsung Galaxy SII which has a 94.000 plus score and is half a year older than the new iPhone 4S.

iPhone 4S Sales Hit 1 Million In One Day, Another Record

This was bound to happen with all the hype prior the release of the next generation of the iPhone. The iPhone 4S, being a disappointment for many who were expecting an iPhone 5 with a large screen and what not, the release was marked by the news of the sad demise of Steve Jobs and of course the death of a mindset as well. However the iPhone 4S has broken all records, as usual hitting 1 Million sales in just one day.

The legacy of Steve Jobs will live in the Apple products to come. I am sure we can expect his approved designs for the next one year at least, given the guy [and of course the folks at Apple] though well in advance like any other great technology company. I dislike the new iPhone 4S, but that’s just me [and I know I can never justify why I dislike the device], but it is definitely a great piece of hardware sitting in the same old crappy iPhone 4 design.

A few folks have stated that the sales soared because more people want to buy the product owing to Steve Jobs death, but those guys need to get a life. I think the device is wonderful and people loved the Apple devices then and more will love them now. And with the Unlock iPhone 4S ready ship from November, the sales might just take off further in countries outside the US. I might be wrong for the officially unlocked iPhone 4S is quite expensive.

Unlocked iPhone 4S Coming In November, A Bit Expensive, Aren’t They?

You read that right, Apple is finally embracing the free iPhone, I mean free of carrier. The news came in today, a day after the sad demise of Steve Jobs owing to his long illness and Pancreatic Cancer and Apple following the visionary’s path, is back in business, staying hungry, staying foolish. I am sure Steve Jobs would have done the same, resumed work immediately after leaving planet Earth, I mean if this was possible by any means.

Just not one thing though, Apple isn’t selling Free iPhone 4S nor is it having Cheap iPhone devices. These unlocked iPhone 4S will be available November onwards and will begin from 16GB costing $649 to the 64GB costing a whopping $849. I guess many would rather go for the contract based device and than manually unlock it. It is a good news for people in countries like Pakistan where people usually have to take a really expensive route at getting an iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS, even now. With this everyone can buy a Factory Unlocked iPhone fairly cheaply. Finally the search queries like Free iPhone, Cheap iPhone, iPhone 4 unlock will be lessening.

Just to highlight, these Unlocked iPhone 4S devices will support GSM only.

I just came across the above image I had saved of his daily tasks after he stepped down as the Apple CEO and he definitely knew not what resting is. I understand, when you take a bow from pushing forth your vision, the energy and enthusiasm lives, gets stronger because no one understands your vision more than yourself.

While the death of Steve Jobs is saddening, we must celebrate that we witnessed the legend live in our times and change how we interact with Technology with the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Macs, etc.
