In May 2007, Roger Huerta became the first mixed martial artist to make the cover of Sports Illustrated Magazine as part of a story showcasing the rising popularity of mixed martial arts.

Huerta submitted Clay Guida by rear naked choke in the third round on December 8, 2007 at The Ultimate Fighter 6 Finale. After taking the worst of hit early on, Huerta stunned Guida with a knee to the face and went on to an impressive come from behind win.

Losses to Kenny Florian and Gray Maynard spelled the end to Huerta’s stint with the UFC and brought on his signing with Bellator’s lightweight tourney.

He fought Vale Tudo in Brazil, and that takes some serious stones.

This fight, from International Vale Tudo Championship 6, was held in Brazil on August 23, 1998.

Chuck Liddell defeated Jose Landi-Jons by unanimous decision.

Roger Huerta signs for Bellator lightweight tourney

Sources confirmed to MMAjunkie.com that Huerta received his walking papers from the UFC this week and that led the veteran fighter’s deal with the upstart Bellator promotion.

Huerta comes off UFC losses to Kenny Florian and Gray Maynard after a layoff to pursue an acting career.

Bellator has set a video press conference for Monday at 3 p.m. ET which will stream live at Bellator.com.

Huerta will part of the eight-man tourney which includes Toby Imada (23-13), Jorge Masvidal (19-5), Chad Hinton (6-0), Mike Ricci (5-0), Ferrid Kheder (16-5), Janne Tulirinta (12-3), and Carey Vanier (7-2).

The winner of the season two tourney earns a shot at Season 1 winner and current Bellator lightweight champ, Eddie Alvarez.Similar Posts:

Freddie Roach has worked with Anderson Silva, BJ Penn, GSP and is widely acknowledged as one of the best striking trainers in MMA and one of the greatest boxing trainers of all time.

Here, he talks Fedor, Bob Arum and what it takes to transition from a career in boxing to a career in MMA.

“Boxing to MMA is harder,” Roach said. “You’ve got to learn five different sports to be a good MMA fighter. Boxers have the advantage with the hands.

I think the boxing promoters have really lost sight of entertaining the people. You get a good main event, but then the undercard is crap. I told Bob Arum that and he got mad at me.”

Chuck Liddell

The rumor mill has it that Chuck Liddell is now set to square off with Rich Franklin in his next bout and not with rival TUF 11 coach Tito Ortiz.

Sherdog is reporting that Liddell and Franklin have verbally agreed to meet at light heavyweight  in June at  UFC 115, a card which has been tentatively scheduled for June 12 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Liddell just wrapped a six-week taping in Las Vegas for Season 11 of Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter,” which debuts on March 31.

Liddell and longtime nemesis Tito Ortiz served as opposing coaches on the show and were originally expected to meet for a third time at UFC 115.

A message posted late Saturday on UFC President Dana White’s Twitter account denied that the bout was slated. “We are doing couture vs franklin not chuck,” read the post.

Word of the Liddell vs Franklin bout was making the rounds of the message boards – a not always reliable indicator – but an industry source confirmed that Liddell will indeed be facing former middleweight champion Rich Franklin.
