Ryan Couture, son of MMA legend Randy “The Natural” Couture, has signed a multi-fight agreement with world championship Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotion STRIKEFORCE and will make his professional MMA debut on Friday, Aug. 13 at the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event at Dodge Theatre in Phoenix, Ariz., LIVE on SHOWTIME (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).

The 27-year-old Couture, a member of the Las Vegas, Nev., based Xtreme Couture fight team, will face Lucas Stark of Chandler, Ariz. in a three-round lightweight (155 pounds) bout.

Looking to make a name for himself in the sport his father helped pioneer, Couture compiled an amateur record of 5-1-1 competing as a lightweight with all five wins coming by way of submission. He has had access to a who’s who of MMA royalty as training partners and coaches, which, coupled with a solid amateur career, has given him the background and confidence to take his fight career to the next level.

Couture, whose parents split up when he was in sixth grade, spent his high school years in suburban Seattle. With his father being a former wrestling coach at Oklahoma State University, Couture naturally developed into a talented high school wrestler.

Following high school, Couture enrolled in Western Washington University in Bellingham, where he graduated in 2004 with a mathematics degree. He worked at a local bank until he realized his desire to work in the family business.
Couture began his MMA training in 2006, working diligently to mature into a well-rounded fighter, adding Muay Thai and a dangerous submission game to his repertoire. In January 2008, he moved to Las Vegas to train with his father.

In his final amateur bout on March 26, Couture fought to a draw against Sean Bollinger for the Tuff-N-UFF 155-pound title fight at The Orleans in Las Vegas.

In the main event, Phoenix native and MMA star Joe “Diesel” Riggs will take on knockout artist Louis Taylor at a catch weight of 182 pounds.

The event will also showcase a four-woman, single-elimination 135-pound tournament featuring STRIKEFORCE Women’s welterweight prospects Miesha “Takedown” Tate, Carina “Beauty But The Beast” Damm, Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano and Maiju Kujala.

Dodge Theatre doors will open at 5:15 p.m. MT for the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event. The first preliminary bout will begin at 6 p.m. and the first main card bout will begin at 8 p.m.

STRIKEFORCE Challengers is a proving ground for up-and-coming MMA fighters. The series is designed to provide today’s top prospects with the opportunity to step-up their level of competition and demonstrate their ability in a nationally televised event.Similar Posts:

One Way For An MMA Fighter To Make Big Money – The Lee Murray Bank Heist

Lee Murray made it near the top of the MMA heap, but it didn’t provide the British-Morrocan fighter quite enough cash, so he sought other revenue streams.

Murray is believed to have been involved in the largest bank robbery in British history. He was apprehended in Morocco, where he has citizenship courtesy of his Moroccan father, and that citizenship and the country’s lack of an extradition treaty with Britain kept him out of British legal hands.

During the summer of 2009, Murray was caught attempting to escape the Moroccan prison where his is being held. Prison officials there say saws were found in a plate of biscuits in Murray’s cell and they believe he was planning to cut through the iron bars of his cell window to escape..

In another incident while behind bars, Murray was punished after being caught with a laptop computer and five keys of drugs.

Murray put together an impressive enough 8-2-1 record fighting for smaller promotions, and his performances were enough to attract the attention of UFC matchmakers.

Once he received a contract with the UFC, Murray managed to take out Jorge Rivera with a triangle choke in the first round of what would turn out to be his only fight in the UFC. Visa problems (and ongoing criminal prosecutions against him in the UK for assault) prevented Murray from fighting in the US again.

Murray was best known, not for his win over Rivera, but for taking out then UFC light-heavyweight champ Tito Ortiz in a street fight following UFC 38 with punches and a kick to the head.

Murray did sign with Cage Rage where he fought current UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and lost a decision, but injuries resulting from his being stabbed in a nightclub brawl prevented Murray from furthering his MMA career.

Jose Vega Hooks His Way Into Bellator Bantamweight Tourney

Missouri-based brawler Jose Vega, who caught the eye of Bellator scouts and MMA fans around the country during a nationally televised “Local Feature Fight” at Bellator 22 in June, has officially been added to Bellator’s upcoming Season 3 Bantamweight Tournament.

The 24-year-old Vega brings an 8-2 record to the tournament, which begins this August. His wins include a 2008 submission of fellow tournament participant Danny Tims and, most recently, a devastating 39-second KO of veteran Jarrod Card in front of a hometown crowd at the Kansas City Power & Light District on June 17th.

Vega is the fifth confirmed participant in the Bantamweight Tournament along with Tims, Las Vegas-based Kobra-Kai jiu-jitsu instructor Ulysses Gomez, fast-rising Wyoming native Nik Mamalis and Minnesota-based powerhouse Travis “The Hurricane” Reddinger.

Born in Miami , Vega moved at the age of 10 with his parents and eight siblings to the Kansas City area, where he was schooled in the fight game by his father.

“My dad used to wrap our hands with towels and electric tape — all of us kids — and he would have us fight each other in the middle of the living room with everyone watching,” Vega recalled. “When my dad was growing up, he used to get beat up a lot by two twins in his neighborhood. Every day after school they would wait for him and beat him up. He didn’t want that to happen to us, so he made sure that we knew how to defend ourselves.”

Vega went on to wrestle in high school and for one year in college and made his pro MMA debut in 2008 at the age of 22. Until just a few months ago, he had no formal training in martial arts but now trains part-time with Kansas City ’s Team Grindhouse while working full-time as a custom cabinetmaker.

“I’m more complete now than I’ve ever been before,” Vegas said of his MMA game. “Up until right before my most recent win over Jarrod Card, I had been training myself by watching fight tapes and instructionals. Now I finally have someone watching over me telling me if what I’m doing is right or wrong. I wanted to be a part of this tournament as soon as I heard about it. I wanted to be a part of Bellator. Bellator is coming up fast and I feel like I’m coming up fast too. They gave me this shot and all I want to do is grow with them.”

Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney said the feeling is mutual.

“Jose showed everyone in MMA what he’s capable with his highlight reel knockout at Bellator 22,” he said. “Part of the beauty of Bellator is that a fighter like Jose can come out of virtual obscurity to make a name for himself and will keep fighting for us as long as he keeps winning. Jose definitely has the tools to go far in our Bantamweight Tournament and I look forward to watching him compete come August.”Similar Posts:

Strikeforce Director of Communications, Mike Afromowitz, says not to worry, if Carina Damm can’t get her visa issues squared away, and adds there’s still a chance she might, his promotion has a fighter ready and willing to step in:

“As has been speculated on various websites, Brazilian Carina Damm is having difficulty obtaining the necessary visa to travel to The United States for her participation in the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event on Friday, Aug. 13 where Damm is slated to compete in the women’s welterweight (135 pounds) tournament in Phoenix, Ariz.

STRIKEFORCE is working diligently to help Carina secure a visa in time to make the trip for next month’s event. In the event that she is unable to acquire a visa, however, we have identified a qualified replacement for the tournament and will release her name if Carina is officially forced to withdraw from the event. This prospective replacement has been in training camp for several weeks and is prepared to take on the task at hand.”
