Review - Dark Blue Season 1 Episode 10 A Shot In The Dark

The writers finally deviated from the formula to create a compelling episode that revealed a lot of backstory and really solidified the team dynamic. Unfortunately, it's the season finale and the writers could have done an episode like this much earlier and deviated even slightly from the usual undercover and arrest thing which had incarnations revolving around drugs, white gangsters, black gangsters, or Korean gangsters. Now all they need is a Mexican on their team to add another group they can infiltrate. These past few weeks, I have been predicting the demise of Dark Blue in regard to the ratings. If the show has any chance of surviving, this was the week to prove it. Without Leverage as a lead-in, Dark Blue has to maintain similar numbers to the previous weeks in order to stay alive.

After Carter calls off chasing a drug dealer, he goes to meet with the dealer while Dean, Ty, and Jaimie spy on him. The man gets shot, most likely by Carter. The team rushes over, but the man is already dead and Carter will deal with him. It turns out the man was a DEA agent and now they are investigating. The agent in charge is Julia Harris played by Sasha Alexander. She did an excellent job in this episode and I was disappointed when she departed from NCIS though Cote de Pablo filled in nicely.

Carter lies through his teeth telling her some guy in a blue car pulled up and shot at them. Carter returned fire and hit the DEA agent in the process. Obviously this did not happen and Carter will have to live with the lie. Dean, Ty, and Jaimie do some investigating and discover that the guys the DEA sold to never got busted and he was working on a heroin case, not a cocaine one. I liked the uneasiness throughout the whole episode. In the back of my mind, I knew Carter had a good reason since he of course is the main character and can do no wrong, but he still shot someone for mostly unknown reasons and was trying to cover it up.

Dean talks with Carter who tells him the DEA agent was clean. This means Carter has no reason to kill the DEA agent. Looking back, it's evident the DEA agent was guilty, but as I watched, the wasn't sure exactly what Carter was doing. Then Harris asks Carter about his ex-wife. Apparently they had been married for 8 years and divorced 2 years ago. The kicker: she was engaged to the DEA agent. Now we have a motive and no forensics to back up Carter. Harris interviews his ex-wife and we learn some details. Carter went undercover for 2 years and lived (!) with another family the whole time. I know, it's probably the most ridiculous thing you've ever heard, but it a great reason for leaving someone.

The rest of the episode deals with the rest of the team deciding what to do. Carter doesn't want them to do anything, but Dean has a clear loyalty to him and pushes the others to corroborate his story. In the end, they fabricate the evidence and lie to save Carter. They're safe for now, but this will come back to bite them in the ass.

There is more Jaimie/Scott silliness which has been the worst part about this show and has increased in the last few episodes. This time, Scott gets an offer to work at a San Francisco firm and wants Jaimie to go with him. Eventually Jaimie tells him her real name, and he is clearly unhappy. The episode ends with their fate up in the air, but if I were to guess, it's over.

The ratings were released between the time I started this review and right now. The 18-49 demo stayed identical to last week's, but the viewership dropped below 2 million to 1.6 million which is horrendous. It had a weak lead-in with the movie Con Air (cool film btw) instead of Leverage, so I'd say Dark Blue's position hasn't changed. Do I hope the show gets renewed? Definitely. Do I think it will get renewed? Realistically, no.

Review - Dark Blue S01E09 Betsy

Is anyone else getting a little tired of the show? I know it's well made, well acted, and well written, but there's just something about seeing the show every week that wears me down. Next week is the season finale and I'm not hopeful for a renewal, so I should be thankful for what we got.

This episode featured the greatest disparity of screen time. Ty was in about 3 scenes and had about 10 lines, while Jamie had 30 minutes of screen time. I would like to commend the makeup people for a great job; Nicki Aycox looked absolutely amazing yesterday. Carter is trying to bust a smuggling ring this week, and after Dean fails due to bad luck, it's all up to Jaimie to get in touch with an old friend, Billy, who she got sent to prison years earlier without him knowing.

There is a tedious and boring leadup to the bust of Sanchez, the smuggler. The bust is extremely straightforward. Carter has guns to ship to Mexico, they agree, and then they arrest everyone. The bulk of the story was Jaimie lying and discovering about her past. The story with Billy enlightened us about her past, but Billy was one-dimensional and I didn't feel too sorry for him. It seemed like this incident tried to portray Jaimie in a good light, Billy is a general scumbag, but we don't really see her taking responsibility for her misdeeds.

Her DA boyfriend Scott had his longest appearance. She needs him to get a plea deal for Billy's friend in order for him to play ball, and she lies to him. We have no clue what he's like in the courtroom, but I was tickled almost to the point of laughing whenever he said something. It kind of reminded me of the first few seasons of Alias when Sydney's friends would make the most ironic comments. Scott is so genuine and naive that it's silly he's with Jaimie whose whole life is based off deceit. The episode ends with Dean telling Jaimie that if she really cares about him, they should split up.

One more episode left, I've become jaded, but the show must go on.

Review - Dark Blue S01E08 Venice Kings

I watched this episode right after I woke up this morning, so I had a faint idea of what was going on. So I'll have to rewatch as I type this. I am almost positive now that Dark Blue will not be renewed. The ratings have not increased, they've even declined somewhat. I think the problem with the show is that if you start watching right in the middle of the episode, you can't really enjoy anything. The whole point of the show is developing a bust over a 40 minute span and there isn't comedy or excessive action you can enjoy from the middle.

Dean joins the Venice Kings, a white gang trying to take over Venice Beach. Before he and his new buddies can do anything, someone pulls up and shoots them. Luckily (and inexplicably), Dean is unhurt and only one person is actually shot. Carter, Ty, and Jaimie come with sirens, so everyone runs off. Dean starts shooting at them to sell his cover and again he was shooting with one hand. I don't know where he learned to shoot guns, and even when he isn't undercover, he's shooting with one hand. Obviously two hands are better than one, but Dean continues to use one hand, I'm guessing because it looks cool.

Carter wants to target the Kings because they have a chance to become a threat not just in Venice Beach, but to the rest of LA. Dean got in because he turned one of the gang members so that proves to be a huge problem especially when it appears he is very nervous.The key to success is heroin and Dean proposes to steal some because he has a source inside the feds. A drug dealer named Sykes sold them out to the Crips, and the head of the Kings wants Dean to kill him. Carter and the rest of the team arrest Sykes and get a picture for Dean.

Ty poses as a drug dealer, but before Carter moves in, the guy in charge of the Kings says that there is a bomb in the city. Carter kidnaps his girlfriend and tries to get him to give up the location of the bomb. After enough convincing, he tells the location of the bomb and they manage to save everyone. The boss is suspicious and thinks Dean is a cop, and beats the informant. Carter moves in before anything can happen and O'neil (the leader) is killed.

There is a side story involving Ty and his sister who needs $7k. Ty could easily have taken the money from Sykes, and Carter would have let him, but opted to sell his motorcycle instead. I'm still tired right now, but I rewatched a large portion of the episode, and a lot of parts still didn't make sense. I got the gisp of what happened which is in the recap. Overall it was a bland episode and seemed very disjointed from the start.

Another good episode and yet from the numbers, no one watched. This is turning out to be standard Jerry Bruckheimer, mostly high quality episodes, never anything too great, overly dramatic at times. The only difference is that it isn't brining the in viewers TNT is looking for and the retention from Leverage is pretty bad. I'm hoping this won't turn into another Eleventh Hour and Close to Home, 2 Bruckheimer shows I genuinely liked that were canceled much before their time.

This week's episode delved into crooked cops. After a shootout with Carter and Dean against Ty and another cop, Chavez, it is revealed that Carter is going after Frye, a guy in charge of a squad, who supposedly is in the back pocket of Terry, a drug supplier. Ty is posing as a uniformed cop in order to join Frye's squad which he is invited to join the next day. Carter's plan is to catch Frye in the act, so he gets some questionable characters to hit Terry's lab and then goes to a dealer that Terry supplies.

Frye takes the bait. When they go to question the dealer, Ty accidentally shoots the dealer dead, but Frye covers it up. Later, Chavez tells him that Terry might have something on Frye and that he is considering turning him in. Somehow, Frye manages to make a link to Dean and they go to his place. Dean escapes, but in the process Chavez is shot, most likely by Frye. Carter makes his move and forces Frye's squad to put down their weapons.

Throughout the episode, Jaimie is having second thoughts about Carter and his methods. She disproves of the criminals that Carter is friends with, likening it to Frye. She does some further investigation, revealing that Frye and Carter used to work together. They have been part of a department that worked outside the rules, and when justice was served to them, Frye had cut a deal.

Ty has a little pregnancy scare when Melissa had one positive and one negative test. In the end, she isn't pregnant, but it is revealed that he would leave the team if she did become pregnant. Frye also meets Melissa and invites them to a barbecue, drawing her into Ty's world, potentially creating a dangerous situation.

I thought the direction of the episode would have been better if they made it so that Frye wasn't so much of a scumbag. In the beginning, it seemed like he and his crew were okay, but then they got progressively worse. In would have liked to see a blurring of the line, sort of like Carter and his team, but there has to be a point where enough is enough.

I think TNT made a mistake by pairing this show with Leverage. Yes, it is about pretending to be someone else and get inside an operation with a team of skilled people, but the tone of the shows are vastly different. TNT could have done much better pairing Dark Blue with Saving Grace or another police show with a similar tone. Dark Blue isn't getting great ratings and I'm expecting a cancellation, but I think the main reason for the viewer dropoff is that Leverage is much more light-hearted while Dark Blue is bordering on depressing at times.

This episode was split very differently with Carter and Ty working together and Jaimie and Dean working together. The 2 separate groups rarely interacted and only come together in the end to do the bust. The target this week is a group that deals with diamonds.

Dean and Jaimie attempt to get a buyer of diamonds by befriending and businessman who has a family. Somehow, this guy only feels secure if the person he is working with has something to risk. To get in his graces, they pose as husband and wife and have dinner with his family. Dean sees how happy his family is and is reluctant to bust him, but he is the only way in and Carter could care less.

Carter and Ty team up with some professionals that own a bar to steal diamonds. One of the robbers wants Ty to kill a worker at the bank, and Ty is clearly disturbed. Of course he actually doesn't do anything and fakes the shooting. Once they obtain the diamonds, Dean sets up the deal and gets everyone ready to be arrested.

I'm sorry if this is a little short, but I'm kind of short on time. The focus of this episode was more on things not related to the diamonds. Ty's wife wants a kid and Ty is very wary of this considering how dangerous his job is. He also meets the sister of the safecracker and she will pretty much do anything with him. In the end, Ty gets an angry text message from her which I thought was totally hilarious since he had put her brother in prison for years. Carter also meets someone working at the bar and they seem to get along in a bizarre way. I don't know how else to describe the scene with the woman other than bizarre. The last scene especially when Carter is supposed to meet her. He stands outside looking at her, calls her, and then leaves. To add to the weirdness, Dean and Jaimie are still having sex while she is still with Scott. Carter appears to walk in on them with the sounds and all, but it turns out Dean was just fixing the table. I thought is was just tacky and awkward.

This was the first Carter-centric episode and I still don't fully understand his character as well as I do the others. From what we know right now he is troubled, probably depressed, a workaholic, obsessive and really creepy. This week, there is a kidnapped woman the FBI is trying to get back, and wants Carter to help. The insurance only covers executives for kidnappings, so she is on her own.

Ty is in prison with some guy who works with the kidnappers and they somehow become friends. This is where the premise of the entire show is flawed. We have no perspective on time, but suddenly, Ty is instantly friends with a kidnapper after just getting beat down together by the guards. Is it weeks or months? It seems inconceivable that everyone can just join whatever group they want in each episode without any setup. That's why I would like to see an episode based solely an establishing the cover over several weeks. The episode could be excellent, giving an introspective look at a member of the team.

The backstory with Carter was weak and petty. Apparently a few years ago, there was a kidnapped woman, Carter didn't move fast enough and she died. There is barely any explaining to the situation, and it left me wondering what extenuating circumstances there was. Unfortunately there were none told and the whole reason for Carter being so aggressive with this particular case seems hollow.

Ty makes contact with the crew which is extremely hostile to him. He meets up with his friend from prison, I'll call him #1. It's confusing to keep track of names in recaps, so from now on, I'll label people by numbers. Ty tells him he has a job to kidnap someone, Jaimie posing as a bankers wife. This leads to an inane explanation for why these aren't the stupidest criminals in the world. They are supposed to have learned kidnapping from the cartels, but are so stupid that won't do a simple Google search on their targets because Ty has a file with a doctored photo.

After the kidnappers discuss raping Jaimie, Carter decides to be the bait, but when he does, Ty gets left behind in the rush. Now Carter is missing and no one knows where he is. Carter tells the kidnappers his insurance will pay extra for the woman's release and they agree. The captain makes a fake press release saying that the woman's boss paid for her release. Ty tells #1 which makes him think the boss, #2, took extra money. Ty and #1 go to the site, a shootout ensues, and Carter is saved.

Other than the plotholes, it was a pretty decent episode. There has not been a large disparity in quality between each episode, and all the episodes have maintained the same edge and tone that makes this show unique. It think the show does a great job with the cinematography which really helps with the tone. Overall, this was a good episode though I would have liked to see more of Carter's backstory notably his personal life which so far, we only know that his wife was killed (correct me if I'm wrong).

Review - Dark Blue S01E04 K-Town

Wednesday nights are now my favorite night of television for the summer. Leverage and Dark Blue back to back are by far the best 2 out there, beating Burn Notice and Royal Pains on Thursdays. Even though both shows are very different in tone, both have their merits. Some people might not like the dark, gritty tone, but personally I'm like shows like that.

The show is formulaic (not a bad thing), each week jumping right into the middle of a deal, before an inevitable hookup. I would like to see some more setup or even a 2-parter where in the first episode, it shows how they set up the cover and in the second, do the bust. I still don't get the character Carter since he's supposed to be the main character and hasn't done much yet other than authorize things. The pilot doesn't really focus on Carter that much, and in each subsequent episode, they focus specifically on Ty, Jaimie, and Dean in that order. Does he ever go undercover or does Carter just sit back and let his underlings figure things out? Even though he is supposed to be the main guy, I don't think he's had as many lines as Dean (maybe).

This week, the focus was on Dean and some pretty important things happened to him, leading to a prediction I have that I'm almost positive will happen in an upcoming episodes(s). The team is in K-Town (Korean) money laundering for a guy named Kang. The episode starts with a great opening sequence in which Dean and another guy see who can take apart and put together a gun the fastest. This is, with 10 Korean guys and Ty standing around them. Dean wins and the other guy gets pissed, Dean knocks the guy out with his head, and there are a couple tense seconds, before Kang, seemingly the boss, starts cheering (he's a sociopath).

Dean and Ty learn from Kang that there is a boss, so Dean doesn't want to bust Kang; instead he wants to get the guy at the top who is involved in more than drugs. They manage to meet a woman who provides them with a counterfeit bill. The bill is near perfect after examination, so Dean and Ty want to buy $500k worth for 60 cents a dollar to draw out the big fish. It works and they get to see the big man.

Ty manages to piss off the boss because he won't be able to see all the counterfeits and the deal is off the tables. Dean gets tries to get back in by talking to one of the only white guys in the gang. Dean bugs his room which is also the room the woman and the boss meet. They see on surveillance that the woman is the boss's girl but also her having sex with the white guy. Dean blackmails both of them to get back in, and he does, and gets to see the press used to make the counterfeits. They trick him, opting to kill him, but Ty comes in and saves him.

Ty also deals with Kang who is was portrayed very well as a kind of crazy guy that can go off his rocker at any time. It's frightening how he pulls his gun out and how he just starts laughing at everything.

Throughout the episode, they is an ongoing struggle between Dean and Ty with Dean doing his own thing with Ty very wary. Carter sides with Dean most of the time and it's obvious Ty is pissed even though he comes through in the end. Dean thinks that Ty has changed since he got married which makes Dean not trust him. Ty tries to tell him that he hasn't changed and meaningful relationships aren't all bad.

This leads to what I think will happen to Dean in a later episode. He and Jaimie are in some kind of friends with benefits deal. Dean also learns that she was taking a break with her ADA boyfriend Scott. We don't know if he knew she had a boyfriend or not, but he seems indifferent either way. After Ty gives him the spiel about relationships, he shows up at Jaimie's apartment wanting to talk, most likely about having a real relationship. She whispers and says Scott is sleeping. Apparently they are back together. Ouch...

At the end of the episode Dean looks really distraught as much as he tries to hide it. This is is real life and not some cover to put criminals behind bars. They way he looked, I thought Dean was going to go off the edge sometime soon. Maybe he does something illegal or extremely dangerous while on the job, maybe drugs, who knows.
