I recently saw a stop motion video of some plants with a comment about “who knew that plants moved so much”. Well, anyone who has ever tried to paint them, that’s who.

I knocked this little iris off while weeding yesterday and just had to bring it inside. There is some disagreement as to whether the fleur de lis is an iris or a lily. I have always thought that the iris is a more likely candidate.

It has been a long time since I painted in oils, and even longer since I was doing my regular daily paintings in this size. I am a bit out of practice but should probably persevere.
This is Humphrey. He is taking part in the local teddy bear hunt. Actually I am not sure that anyone else is playing but he has always been a very optimistic bear, ever since he was abandoned in a parking lot 60 years ago and was confident that he would find a home somewhere (he did).
I am not sure why he is wearing two sweaters, one made by my mother and another by me thirty years later, but it is still a little chilly around here, so maybe it is just as well.
Harriet Tubman was probably the most famous member of this congregation.
It is located in downtown St. Catharines.
Another view of a window.
I hadn’t intended to include the dog but she insinuated herself. Lighting changed from overcast (with thunder) to bright sunshine while I was sketching.
I would like to thank urban sketcher Steven Reddy for his excellent tutorials. They have helped me enormously to loosen up and sketch without needing everything to be perfect.
This one is actually almost identical to another I did about a year ago. Unlike dogs who can rest immobile for hours, cats are rarely still for more than a few minutes, even when they are asleep. Marigold is feeling very pleased with herself because she finally figured out how to use the cat door. I have no idea what took her so long as she has been know to make her own exit when none was available (hole in screen door, twice, escape through ceiling at vet’s office). Here she is taking a break from her adventures.
Too much back-light for me to show this with the subject, so you will just have to take my word for it. The four hibiscus plants live in this window all winter. At least one of them is 20 years old. I prune the roots as well as the tops every couple of years, so they are effectively bonsaied. It won’t be long now before I can put them out on my porch.
It looks as if the “Small Feats” fundraiser may have to be cancelled or postponed. This would be a shame as I know it is a significant source of income for the Niagara Artists Centre. Perhaps they will figure out a way of selling the paintings on line.
This is Lock 4 on the Welland Canal, as seen from the Glendale lift bridge. I am not sure why this view appeals to me, I have painted it before. I am reworking a lot of old themes these days, maybe with constant repetition I will finally be able to get them right. Sort of like a musician practicing her scales.Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04102492801230311641noreply@blogger.com0Welland Canal Lock, Merritton, St. Catharines, ON L0S 1A0, Canada43.137329820679533 -79.19220177840915743.125303820679534 -79.21417427840916 43.149355820679531 -79.170229278409153tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3197921060029608697.post-27449357038902984502020-03-11T14:37:00.000-04:002020-03-11T14:37:02.748-04:00Sts. Here is another square foot painting, possibly for submission to Small Feats, the annual Niagara Artists Centre show and fundraiser. We shall see.
Sts. Cyril and Methodius is a Ukrainian Catholic church in St. Catharines. It is a familiar sight to anyone who drives the Queen Elizabeth Way between Hamilton and Niagara Falls, as it is right by the highway.
I have started working on some paintings for NAC’s annual “Small Feats” fundraiser. Here is the first, perhaps not quite finished but nearly there.
I am not sure that you can actually see these buildings anymore, they are pretty hidden behind the Meridian Centre. But a few years ago these rear views were among the first things you saw when coming off the 406. I always liked them. I believe that the stilts were there because rge raceway used to run along there.Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04102492801230311641noreply@blogger.com084 St Paul St, St. Catharines, ON L2R 3M2, Canada43.156575945347242 -79.24500945073323543.155073445347242 -79.247755950733236 43.158078445347243 -79.242262950733235
