Mason recently censored himself on his Momentile Feed. He had uploaded a picture of a postcard of ‘L’Origine du monde’ by Gustave Courbet that caught his eyes while ambulating through a mall. It’s classic. From like 1866 or something. It’s culture, it’s art, it’s an evocative piece. It’s also pornographic. That’s my take on it. It’s where babies come from. It kinda made me think about baby making (maybe with Alison Mosshart?).

Momentile did not take the picture down, but Mason gave the ToS a once over to see what restrictions might possibly exist. He found that items that could possibly be offensive to other users must not be posted. He contrasted that with the Chilling Effect entry on wikipedia.

Self sensorship…

The discussion about art vs. porno is one thing, and I’m not equipped to participate. But it really made me consider one of the great navels that social media spends too much time wallowing in. Can you get fired for a facebook post? Yes. Can you get in legal trouble for a tweet? Yes? Are we each responsible for our own words and their effect? Yes. We’ve been over this stuff. Move on.

I recently tried to delete a tweet that quoted someone I shared a beer with at a security conference in Toronto. We were talking about how we got into playing with the dark arts of computers when he said the most inspiring thing, “There is this line that your not supposed to cross. But then there is truth on the other side. So fuck it, I have to go.”

The guy contacted me right away saying I needed to delete it, as the opinion might not be appreciated by his employer. I did, not sure how indexed it got before it went down. I felt bad, should have asked him first. It was a private conversation.

When I blog, who do I represent? Me I thought. I don’t have a company badge on my feeds, I don’t get paid by my employer to tweet. In fact, when I appeared on “The Lab with Leo”, I was told by my company specifically that I was not to represent them. So I didn’t. But they can just swoop in and take ownership of my own shit if they feel the need? “You’re not senior enough to speak for us”. Cool. I won’t. I don’t represent you. I’ll just represent myself.

But when you disagree with what I say you turn around and bitch me out for what I said that you said did not represent you… WTF?

So you don’t want me to represent you when you don’t like what I say. But when I post a tweet about a partner vendor’s TAC that get’s a response from them so bad I get phone calls that night at home with people falling on their sword for me, that’s cool. When it works for you, that’s cool. Make up your mind. Or fire me. Or something.

Whatever, this post has no flow, there were chick peas in the baby corn container at the salad bar (which pisses me right the fuck off), and all I wanna do is just head over to ArtCentral and start drinking for First Thursday NOW.

Might be late for work tomorrow. Blowing off steam.

I’ve been on a huge The Dead Weather kick lately.

Maybe it’s been because things at work are still heading south. Maybe I’ve just been too slammed personally and professionally with responsibilities that I’m starting to fray. Maybe I need new pants. Whatever it is, I’ve been slowly smoldering for a fight and someone needs to get an ass kicking. I might need to be on the receiving end of that ass kicking as well. But I take pleasure in the fact that the ass kicker looses out as well. Zero Sum game baby. Has something to do with the “deal” or “arrangement”…

Whatever, it’s just how I’ve been feeling.

So Will There Be Enough Water has kinda been my end game song. I can see it and smell it when I listen to it’s slow rough bluesy riffs. It’s hot. Humid. Sun is headed down. Sky is red over a barren plain somewhere. Someone’s pointing a gun and I’m giving a long slow stare down the barrel. I’m daring the trigger man with a half smirk tasting bitter in my mouth.

I thought I would share that taste with you. Or I would have, but I’m not sure if Tyler allowed me to embed videos. Hence the old school link.

Also, I’ve got a huge crush on Alison Mosshart. Wouldn’t mind her taking a couple of swings at me, all sweaty and intense and pissed off…

The lack of mourning for the passing of the cassette is curious, but not entirely surprising. As a canvas, the cassette just didn’t have the majesty of records. Somehow the covers of Pink Floyd’s The Wall and The Beatles’ Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band just don’t seem as iconic when they’re condensed into a space that’s slightly larger than a pack of smokes. Hauling them around was usually a pain in the ass. And finally, the general sound quality wasn’t the reason why most people opted for cassettes. It was for their portability.
