Maxis has revised its Mobile Internet Plans for its users. The unlimited mobile internet  RM99/month package is no longer offered. Instead, they have introduced a total of 5 packages which ranges from hourly to monthly package to suit different needs.

For those who need mobile Internet for a short period of time, without worrying about paying more, there are hourly rates of RM2. This is is equivalent to 3.3 sen/minute. There’s a 100MB limit for this package however which is achievable if you download continous rate of 27KByte per second for 60 minutes.

For whole day usage, there’s a daily package for RM8/day. However the maximum limit is 500MB.

On a monthly basis, there’s a 500MB, 1.5GB and 3GB monthly plan that are charged at RM58/month, RM78/month and RM88/month respectively.

If an event where you exceed the given quota for hourly and daily use, Maxis will charge excess usage at 1 sen/Kbyte for peak and 0.5sen/Kbyte for off peak . Monthly plans excess charge at fixed at 0.5sen/Kbyte.

Too bad they have stopped the unlimited plan with speed throttling for excess usage. With these changes, mobile users on Maxis have to beware on their usage as now there’s a risk of paying more than your monthly data subscription.

Rates

Tune Talk claims super low rates but we beg to differ. Tune Talk charges the same rate to all domestic networks at 22 sen/minute for calls and 5 sen/SMS. International rates are claimed to be lower than the competition and International SMS are charged at a fix rate of 20sen/minute.

It is also mentioned that all calls are charged on 60 seconds block which isn’t an efficient in bill charging. As mentioned before on 60 seconds billing block, this simply means a good 5 second “Hello, I’ve reached home” will be charged as full minute at 22 sen.

Compared to other prepaids in the market, TuneTalk rates aren’t competitive enough and the big blocky 60 seconds block is quite a turn off. However it looks like TuneTalk will try to justify the higher rate with its unique benefits with its partners such as Etiqa and AirAsia.

We strongly think these data roaming rates are just too expensive. Alternatively we suggest that you buy a local prepaid with data package for cheaper mobile data connectivity.

Maxis iPhone 3G S has been launched for couple of weeks already and they had been hit with apparent stock shortages. Those interested to get their iPhone 3G S had to place a pre-booking fee of RM200 at any iPhone 3G S roadshows at various malls nationwide. Strangely you can’t pre-book your iPhone 3G S at any dealers and even official Maxis outlets.  According to sources, those who pre-book shall get their iPhone 3G S within 2 weeks or latest by end of this month.

Currently the most desirable package in our opinion would be the RM99/month 3GB iData Plan which lets you buy the iPhone 3G S 16GB from as low as RM1690.

Since iValue Plans had been perceived to be less value to those who enjoyed commitment based Value Plus plans, Maxis had made some revision. Now the iValue Plans come with FREE SMS and MMS with its packages. iValue 1 Plan of RM100/month comes with 100 Free SMS and 10 Free MMS per month while the iValue 4 Plan of RM375/month comes with 400 Free SMS and 40 Free MMS. Maxis now also highlights that iValue Plan allows Free local calls and SMS between its supplementary family lines too.
