EP girls cross-country: Forecasting perfect storm?

When the Eden Prairie High School girls cross-country team won a state title last year, everything that had to come together, came together.

“We had a very hard working team,” said Eden Prairie Head Coach Jeff Lindlief, “we had a great leader in Cassy Opitz, we were peaking at the right time and we were healthy.

“Staying healthy was the big one,” he adds. “Sure, you do things to stay healthy, but you just never know.”

This year’s Eden Prairie High School girls cross-country team faces those same challenges and then some.

EPHS boys cross-country team still chasing Wayzata

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Last year, the Eden Prairie High School boys cross-country team finished two to Wayzata’s one at the Section 6AA Meet and then again at the MSHSL State Meet.

Wayzata has since graduated its top two runners.

Not to be outdone, Eden Prairie graduated three of its top seven runners.

This year?

“Wayzata is the clear-cut favorite,” said Eden Prairie Head Coach Jeff Lindlief. “They didn’t have to rebuild; instead, they reloaded.

EP coach hoping swimmers and divers finish ‘Top 10’

Dan Tripps, head coach of the Eden Prairie High School girls swim and dive team is guessing when he says this, but …

“We’re not going to finish first at the state meet,” he said, “and I doubt we’ll finish second.”

So?

“I think we’ve got a shot to crack the top 10,” he adds.

Tripps said this after assessing his losses, which in terms of state meet points, included contributions from Stephanie Solfelt, Claire Ritzen, Jenny Nilson and Rachel Bootsma.

Wait a minute.

Solfelt, Ritzen and Nilson graduated, but isn’t Bootsma a sophomore?

Eagle volleyball team to butt heads with state’s best

If everything goes as predicted, the Eden Prairie High School volleyball team stands to be the third best team in its section.

Not bad considering that Shakopee and Chaska, arguably the two best teams in the section; are also the two best teams in the state.

For what it’s worth, a preseason poll has Shakopee at No. 1, Chaska at No. 2, Eastview at No. 3, Stillwater at No. 4 and Eden Prairie at No. 5.

Key to Eden Prairie’s success, aside of from staying healthy, will be how it melds its young players with its more experienced players.

How’s this for crazy?

Monday, the Eden Prairie High school girls tennis team opened its 2009 season with a home match against Edina, only the best team in the state.
And get this; Edina had already played seven matches (last weekend, the Hornets won a multi-state invitational in Wisconsin).

But listen to this.

“I think it’s a great thing to see them right away,” said Eden Prairie Head Coach Greg Witta. “We’ll see them again in Rochester and probably get to play them again at the Edina Invitational.

Tuesday, the Minnesota State High School League board of directors voted to place Edina, Hopkins, Minnetonka and Wayzata into the Lake Conference beginning with the 2010-11 school year.

The vote was unanimous.

Not counting Chaska and Chanhassen, who plan to leave the Lake for the Missota Conference next fall, the Lake Conference will now number 14 teams (Apple Valley, Bloomington Kennedy, Bloomington Jefferson, Burnsville, Eagan, Eastview, Eden Prairie, Edina, Hopkins, Lakeville North, Lakeville South, Minnetonka, Rosemount and Wayzata).

However, rumor has nine of those 14 teams leaving to form their own conference south of the river.
