Following in the footsteps of prior Stereogum-curated tribute albums (see Drive XV: A Tribute to R.E.M.'s Automatic for the People and OKX: A Tribute to Radiohead's OK Computer) comes this track-by-track cover of Björk's Post, which, along with Liars, features contributions from Dirty Projectors ("Hyperballad"), Xiu Xiu ("Isobel"), Atlas Sound ("Headphones"), No Age ("It's Oh So Quiet (Alternate Take)"), and others. This one starts off with the sound of a shotgun loading before sickeningly lurching along at half speed, all distorted and compressed to hell, with Angus Andrews' croon floating over the top. Brings to mind the stuff from the 2004 EP There's Always Room On the Broom and the split with Oneida.

So after a couple calls to repost earlier episodes (I noticed that after a certain point earlier ones disappeared from the iTunes store), I've managed to restore the missing episodes so that anyone who started listening after the first episode is now able to grab all the previous podcasts they missed out on. Apparently it was as simple as changing the number of max posts in Blogger by tweaking the address of my feed in Feedburner (by default, only the first 512K is listed). You can now grab up to 500 episodes of Sounds of the Apocalypse, should I ever make it that far (crossing my fingers).

Hungarian for "destroys from the inside", "Belülről Pusztít" is from the Oracle EP, which was sold during the band's 2007 Pacific Rim tour and on the Southern Lord West Coast 777 tour. Joe Preston (Earth, Melvins, Thrones) provides the jackhammer (yes, jackhammer) on this track, although it sounds more like a drawbridge being raised and lowered, or someone being stretched out on a rack, which, coupled with the awesome album art, fits the mood of the track perfectly. These guys never cease to amaze me. The other track on the disc (the version sold at shows has an extra disc with a 45-minute live track from 2005 called "HeliO)))Sophist"), "Orakulum" is not as good but still killer.

Only a few duds here, with highlights coming from the likes of Melt Banana ("Faint Heart"), The Chinese Stars ("The Plague", which previously aired in Episode #22), Error ("Wild World"), Celebration ("King Ink"; ex-Love Life), Kill Me Tomorrow ("Junkyard"), Daughters (see below), the aforementioned tracks from Cattle Decap and Some Girls, as well as this nauseating little ditty from T Cells that'll make your stomach swim.

First off, love the cover art - a throwback to '70s slasher flicks ("The beaches were covered in blood......and so were the bitches!"). This plays like a murkier version of Nurse With Wound's Homotopy to Marie, but with a little more variety in the sense that it's not as cohesive. There's tons of stuff just lurking below the surface, which gives me the feeling that this is one of those albums where you discover something else on each listen. This is the second track ("The Dead Boy Would Not Go Away"(?)), eighteen minutes of somewhat soothing drone.

First album from Throbbing Gristle in over 20 years. The new album is a mixed affair, akin more to 20 Jazz Funk Greats than any of the Report albums. Most noticeable are the clean production values and Genesis P-Orridge's attempts to actually sing, where he falls flat most of the time, except on "Lyre Liar". All in all, kind of so-so; I'm just glad it's not an absolute stinkbomb, although the cover art is terrible. Tracks like this one, along with the opener "Vow of Silence", are great though.

I would call this Part Three of the Episode #7 - #9 trifecta. The title and subject matter pretty much explains it all, although I'd also give this episode an alternate title in the vein of "Man Turns Against Himself" or "The Ugly Side of Human Nature".

Peter Kürten, also known as the Vampire of Düsseldorf, was a German serial killer known for committing a series of sex crimes, assaults, and murders against adults and children.

Of all the Report albums TG released, First Annual Report, was actually the last of the three (coming after Second Annual Report and Third and Final Report). "Very Friendly" details the events of the Moors Murders, with specific mention of Edward Evans, Ian Brady and Myra Hindley's fifth and final victim. What makes this track so effective (read: creepy) is not only the subject matter, but Genesis's somewhat cartoonish vocal delivery, which upon hearing you can't help but laugh nervously.

This band's only major hit. Also covered by Suicide, Aretha Franklin, The Modern Lovers, The Stranglers, Primal Scream, and a host of others.

6. Song: Military Road , Artist: Prurient , Album: Pleasure Ground (Load)

Actually the only Prurient album I can enjoy, let alone listen to from start to finish, probably due to the fact that Fernow does a great job of spacing and pacing, as opposed to the denseness of a lot of his other albums. It's not like he doesn't make an attempt to drive away any and all potential listeners on this album though: opener "Military Road" starts off with about a minute long squall of high-pitched feedback (think Whitehouse). Excellent lyrics for this track too: "Will you miss the abuse / The intimate violence / The parade of bruises / The badge of punishment?"

7. Song: I Only Have Eyes For You , Artist: The Flamingos , Album: American Graffiti (MCA)

I reckon people either see this as a love song, which was probably it's intention, or a creepy stalker song. I'm betting on the latter.

8. Song: No Remorse (I Wanna Die) , Artist: Slayer & Atari Teenage Riot , Album: Spawn: The Album (Sony)

Great comic book, excellent animated series (from what I hear), terrible, terrible movie. The soundtrack is decent though, with the best tracks being this one, plust the ones from Marilyn Manson & Sneaker Pimps, Orbital & Kirk Hammett, and Filter & The Crystal Method.

9. Song: Bathed In Orange , Artist: Ed Gein , Album: Ed Gein (Hex)

Episode #8 - The Infected

This episode is a Part Two of sorts to Episode #7. It's a pretty claustrophobic mix as a whole, there's really no room to stop for air, which I think contrasts nicely with a lot of the drone and ambience present in the last episode.

Apparently Drumcorps, also known as Aaron Spectre, does whole albums of this stuff, combining breakcore with grindcore and blast beats. His 2006 album Grist, also pulls material from Botch, Pig Destroyer, and Cave In, and this song is also on a free Cock Rock Disco sampler available for download at their website. I may have to pick this album up.

First three tracks off this crazy psych album from 1968 (produced by Pete Townsend), the first half of which is a mini-concept album of sorts. "Fire" was Brown's only hit, but that's not to discount the rest of the album, which also features covers of James Brown's "Money" and Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell On You". I highly recommend picking this up; I'd grab a vinyl copy if you can find one. If you must pick it up on CD, avoid all the versions save the Touchwood one (which has three extra tracks tacked on at the end, including a mono version of "Prelude - Nightmare"), as the tracklisting for most CD versions is out of Brown's original intended order - extremely important for an album such as this. Interesting side note: I hear grind-spazz-psych-core band An Albatross has covered "Fire" in concert.

Giffoni curates New York's annual No Fun Fest, usually held at The Hook. This year's lineup, scheduled for May 17-20, includes Hair Police, Merzbow, Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), The Rita, Keiji Haino, Aaron Dilloway (Wolf Eyes), and Giffoni himself. He's also the guitarist for Monotract, and does electronics for noise supergroup Death Unit, which also features Chris Corsano, Trevor Tremaine (of Hair Police), and Brian Sullivan (Mouthus). Belgian progressive big band formed from the ashes of fellow Belgians X-Legged Sally and Fukkeduk. Isms is actually a compilation of tracks from four prior releases, and also features a homage to the Birthday Party in the form of "(Little) King Ink".

Features reinterpretations of "Well I'll Be a Monkey's Uncle", from The Locust's 1999 self-titled release whose cover art parodies Queen. Bastard Noise (member John Wiese reared his head in Episode #1 with "Batman Dracula"), Wizards of War, Sinking Body (Neil Burke of Born Against and Men's Recovery Project fame), Kid 606, and I Am Spoonbender also contribute.

ILX pitts these two tracks against each other in their forums, but they're both classics. As far as scares go, "Frankie Teardrop", a tragic tale of a disenfranchised Vietnam vet, goes the surprise route, while "Hamburger Lady" - based off a true story about a burn unit victim in Portland, Oregon - lurches along (best line: "She is burned from the waist up/...She's burned from the waist down"). Originally on TG's own Industrial Records (yes, they coined the term), D.O.A. got the Mute reissue treatment in 1993. After breaking up, TG members went on to Psychic TV (Genesis P-Orridge), Coil (Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson), and Chris & Cosey (Cosey Fanni Tutti & Chris Carter), although an album of new material slated for an early 2006 release on Mute still hasn't seen the light of day.

Yellow Swans, and LHD, as well as helping on production of Yellow Swans' psych-noise splatterfest Psychic Secession.

Broadcast live on WELH 88.1 FM in Providence, Rhode Island from 1 AM - 2AM on Saturdays, Sounds of the Apocalypse is also available as a weekly podcast.

I chose songs and/or samples not necessarily based on their lyrical content or aim (i.e. they don't specifically have to be about the end of the world), but rather based on their overall sound or musical transitions of evoking feelings in the listener that this is what they would hear as a soundtrack for the day the world ends. In this respect, I value track transitions, spacing, and pacing over anything else. In the past, I've also done shows for WERW 1570 AM in Syracuse, New York, and when I'm not programming for WELH I do web development for an alarm monitoring company.

I also welcome posts for musical and/or audio suggestions or requests for future episodes.
