Song-A-Day

Back in the old days, when I was motivated, somewhat creative, and had gobs of freetime I decided I'd challenge myself by writing and recording a song every day for a month. I chose February, the shortest month because I'm not an overachiever. I want to try it again this year.
Clicking around the net, it turns out that my '29 songs in February' idea isn't too original. The RPM challenge is slightly different in that it's more about delivering a full album at the end of the month.
Sure I did this back in 1996 (or was it '95?). The one thing that pleases me is learning that there's something universally musicianly about choosing the shortest month in the year for this kind of effort.

I think I'm close.
Also, yes you caught me. This song is basically Jobim's 'Aguas de Marco' through an amp on 11.
It's up to me, you see.
From bruce: Standing (Evan) sung by 4 year old Evan

From greacen: I Never Wanted I have no idea what I was thinking when this came out of me. I sang the melody into my phone while driving home. For some reason, I started the recording by laying down drums. That gimpy-lousiana beat came out of me first. I then proceeded to pile odd-fitting layer after another on it until this gem appeared. Oh yeah, I put the cowbell in at the end because JL said how much he loves cowbell.
I never wanted to spill the beans no matter what it seems. I never wanted to spill the beans, so nice there on rice it seems. I never wanted to dupe the krewe there on the bayou with no food. I never wanted to play the fool. Just like you, I wanted to be cool.
Moonlight, midnight now. Next time we'll find how.

From derek: Bagel If it's not a genuine New York bagel Then it's a circular piece of bread I'd rather have a piece of toast instead If it's not a genuine New York bagel Throw it out, you know I do it all the time
I've tried them all throughout the golden state A round piece of dough rolling on my plate Well you have to boil them, then you bake Anything less and it's a fake
If it's not a genuine New York bagel Then it's a circular piece of bread I'd rather have a piece of toast instead If it's not a genuine New York bagel Throw it out, you know I do it all the time
If you buy the ones from Sarah Lee You'll be disappointed I guarantee I suggest you fly out to New York Be sure to bring a knife and fork
If it's not a genuine New York bagel Then it's a circular piece of bread I'd rather have a piece of toast instead If it's not a genuine New York bagel Well, I'm asking you to throw it out I'm asking you to throw it out I'm asking you to throw it out Bagel.

From greacen: Worry About Yesterday I was gonna just go to sleep, then I listened to DCA once more.
From seth: Wo is us Gaby had a show at the Firehouse Lounge in Austin, Texas and we went to see it, but the venue was not open, and so the gig was cancelled, and we were not happy about it, but we had to move on, oh, wo is us.
And then we went to get the car from the parking lot but the parking attendant was a little bit grumpy. He was a grumpy bumpy. And we were not happy about it, but we had to move on. Oh, wo is us.
And so we went to Progress Coffee to get ourselves a chocolate chip muffin, but they were out of chocolate chip muffins, and so we had to get a croissant, and we were not happy about it, but we had to move on. Oh, wo is us.

From greacen: Make The Most Of Your Tonight I recently reconnected with someone I played music with in college. In that conversation, I realized that time we played together was about the midpoint of our lives. Right now is the (or could be) the midpoint of our lives. Let's do something to mark the occasion.
20 years ago I was fresh off the bus. Hardly know who the hell I was. That was halfway through my life. Now and then I lose track of time. how long it's been and where we're going. Tonight we'll be halfway through our lives.
The night will come, the day will come, the road is long (so is this song)
WAIT! Nothing left to calculate.
Make the most of our tonight!

From derek: Waiting Close your eyes hear a telegraph Canonized by his loyal staff Memorized I hear it looping Over and over again
Read the words written on a plaque Threw a dime on the railroad track Lilly Belle, you have to hurry Sitting here with nothing to do
Waiting for the Disneyland train to come.
If I walk and endure the pain Might arrive faster than by train And avoid that weird narration Over and over again
Waiting for the Disneyland train to come.

From seth: Benefits I'm still behind and not really writing complete songs, but this is the essence of the project! I wouldn't have written anything were it not for the project. I would have gone to bedtime were it not for the project. I'm going to try to write a sentence that doesn't end in the project. D'oh, the project!

		      From ryan: hu uuuum

From greacen: Special Sauce I will gladly mix the organ out of this song if you ask nicely. It's probably not necessary except for the backing vocal shares its track with the organ.
Also, see my blipzap (http://greacen.com) for a picture of the absurd organ that I was playing.
Caucasians on the sly, drink until you can fly. We'll never know the loss with a second helping of that special sauce.
Coffee, Cream on the down low. Nobody guessed just how far that this would go. The mix is sweet but nearly deadly with a second helping of that special sauce

From derek: Solid Ground Whatever you want to do I'm leaving it up to you Whatever you want to be It's gonna be fine by me
Someday you will find out The world beneath your feet is solid ground Someday you will find out The world beneath your feet is solid ground
So take me by the hand If nothing goes as planned I'll be there if you fall I'll be there when you fly away.
I'll guide you along until You move on your own free will And even beyond that day I'm guiding you anyway
Someday you will find out The world beneath your feet is solid ground Someday you will find out The world beneath your feet is solid ground
So take me by the hand If nothing goes as planned I'll be there if you fall I'll be there when you fly away.

		      From ryan: Time_would_be_nice

From derek: Monkeys and Clowns Never write songs about monkeys and clowns That's an unbreakable rule If you write songs about monkeys and clowns No one will think that you're cool
These are the words that must never be sung Lyrically, they are taboo If you want to defy it I dare you to try it Then people will ostracize you
How many songs about monkeys and clowns Are loved and respected by all? Only a few have been turned into Muzak That plays every day in the mall.
If you are trying to write a hit song These are the words you should shun Monkeys and clowns Always generate frowns Though I have to admit they are fun

		      From bruce: 29raG acoustic acoustic

From seth: OrNot RachMonkEnuff I need a release I guess

From seth: The Men (Derek + drumming) I slipped Derek's song into my tool and played with it. I love this song. My drumming is second rate at best but it was fun to beat on drums with my hands and sing a little.

From bruce: Thank you acoustic acoustic version

From greacen: Birds Go Down 1 take. I recorded this on a dusty old acoustic guitar that I bought at the border coming back from Ensenada. I used 1 mic for the guitar/vocal track (just sang and played at the same time). There was some chirping in the background so I recorded a few tracks of chicken sounds to fill out the sound.
Birds above they never come down. Birds are down, they never go up. Ever scratching and poking. Always going and smoking.
They're the only ones the only one who knows what they're gonna do.

From derek: Me and the Pope Me and the Pope are both wearing a hat One is quite pointy and the other is flat.
Me and the Pope love to talk on the phone When we are together we're never alone.
Tonight on Meet the Press They'll ask us to confess To something we'll deny.
Me and the Pope are both fashionable guys It's not Halloween but we wear a disguise.
Me and the Pope have got something to hide One is external and the other inside.
Tonight on Meet the Press They'll ask us to confess To something we'll deny.

From greacen: Put Down That Bag Of Rocks This is one that didn't really make sense to me until the end. Not sure it really makes complete sense yet, but I kinda see where it's going...
Set 'em down. Let 'em rest You don't have to haul them around. Drop them here. Leave 'em be. Your hands are full already. Set 'em down.
Heavy things have gotten you this far in life. Doesn't mean you need them with you always. Put down that bag of rocks.

		      From bruce: thank you instrumental

From derek: Jury Selection It's day 4 of the jury selection process for a civil trial that will last seven weeks. At least it's something to write about.

From greacen: Bring It Back This is another 'throw up a mic and see what happens' night. Though at this point the mics are pretty much up "full-time".
Gone, gone are the records. Gone is the proof that this was working.
One of the things I saved from before to remind me...
Bring it back, wish it back, why don't you call it back, pull it back would you take it?
On, we've all moved on from under the sea. Remind me...
why, why we left it. Why we forgot. Remind me?

		      From bruce: shouldabeenalespaul rock

From greacen: Oh Hell, Oh Still the same since we last heard from each other. Still the same, but I've got a few tricks up my sleeves.
Oh hell, oh. Here we go again. We'll be up all night long.
Just wanted to start with a full-band sound.

From seth: The Best Place In The World woke up feeling down / felt like leaving town / insides black and blue / so i took my girl / to the best place in the world / that i'm about to tell you / bad things become well / when riding the carousel / i may not be around / if you fall to the ground / but in life there is wear and tear / so when you've skinned your knee / you can come to me / and i'll take you there / bad things become well / when riding the carousel / and when you've gone around the bend around the bend / it is just a break it is not the end it's not the end
