Barnes & Noble’s Nook Sales Tank 20%, But More Nooks Are Coming

The bad news keeps coming for Barnes & Noble’s digital business, but the company appears to be doubling down on the Nook regardless.
Barnes & Noble revealed Tuesday that its first quarter sales declined across the board. The retail division’s revenue dropped by nearly 10% year-over-year to $1 billion for the quarter while Nook revenue declined more than 20% to $153 million — though adjusted losses for the division were essentially the same as last year.

Hacker Leaks Details of 15,000 Twitter Accounts

An Islamist hacker says he gained access to "the entire database of users on Twitter" and has already leaked the login details of more then 15,000 accounts online.
A hacker under the name Mauritania Attacker, who claims to be from the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, a country in West Africa — shared details on Tuesday about the leak via file-sharing site Zippyshare, according to a GigaOm report. The account information compromised includes every account’s Twitter name, ID and authentication tokens associated with third-party apps that have access to the account (for example, Instagram or HootSuite). Barnes & Noble founder abandons plan to buy back retail business

Barnes & Noble’s "founder"* Leonard Riggio has conceded that his plans to rescue the firm have been iced. Thanks to those same SEC regulations that tipped us to his intentions, the company’s majority shareholder has admitted that he won’t attempt his ambitious rescue of the ailing retailer. In a statement, Riggio urges B&N to push the Nook tablet, serve its 10 million-strong customer base and build out the company’s struggling retail business. At the same time, Barnes & Noble let slip that at least one new Nook device will arrive before the holiday season, presumably the first that’ll be produced by a third party — but let’s be honest, it’s not looking good.

Indian Startup Uses Drones To Drop Aid In Flood-Ravaged Areas

Drones don’t have the best reputation on the subcontinent and in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, sandwiched between war-torn countries of Pakistan, Kashmir, and Nepal, villagers no doubt harbour suspicions of the remote-controlled flying beasts. However, local startup Social Drones is using its home-grown arsenal of bi, quad, and octo copters for good, surveying the effects of a recent natural disaster which claimed 580 lives, and planning to courier medicines and foods to isolated victims.

Google’s Waze Acquisition Bears First Fruit As Mobile Google Maps App Gets Real-Time Incident Reports

Google Maps gets real time Waze reports on Android and iOS

I mean, we knew this was coming sooner or later. Still, it’s nice to see a major teamup come out of that Google / Waze marriage that happened back in June (who doesn’t love a summer wedding?). Google Maps mobile users in the US, UK and a slew of other countries are getting Waze-submitted real time accident, construction, road closure and other reports on Android and iOS.
