It’s been the same way always for me. When I first heard Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush to this week when I’ve been listening to High Violet by The National. So far I’ve been obsessed by Conversation 16 to Blood Buzz Ohio to Lemonworld … I’ve never been a fan of The National, but with their new album they really opened a door to their world. It’s just the perfect soundtrack for my life right now.

Have you seen the movie High Fidelity? Well if you haven’t – do! It’s a great movie about music and even though it has some years to kick back it does capture the music nerd very well. You do remember the mix tapes and the top 5 lists you used to make right?!

Florida Acoustic by Sofia Talvik tops Amie Street

Wears the Trousers Magazine (in English) and music blog With music in my mind (in French) has posted a great review of my new album ‘Florida’ and scores it 8 out of 10.

“Talvik’s versatility as a vocalist is at the core of the song, her voice sweet and clear when delicate and, when raised, capable of making the pulse race. (…) In the end, it’s only as the bucolic finale ‘You Bring Me Back’ elapses into silence that Talvik’s spell is finally broken, leaving an impulse to live through the heady, ravishing experience all over again. Sofia Talvik 'Florida Acoustic'

I hope you all enjoyed my latest album”Florida”! Now it will also be available in a acoustic version “Florida Acoustic”, where all the songs is recorded live with just me and the guitar (and piano on one song).

To celebrate the release of “Florida Acoustic” I’m doing a mini tour in Sweden, playing 7 acoustic gigs in 7 days. But don’t worry if you’re not in Sweden next week. All the concerts will be streamed online so you’ll be able to see them anyway! If you are in Sweden however you can catch me here:

Sofia Talvik is playing at Peace&Love

Tuesday June 29th you can catch me play at the Peace&Love Festival at the Peace&Love café. I’m doing an acoustic set to celebrate the upcoming release of my acoustic version of “Florida”. I’m playing at 7pm (kl 19).

If you’re an aspiring artist yourself you can also catch the panel discussion on Wednesday 30th for “Fast Forward” around the music industry, where I will participate and give my view of how it is to be an artist in today’s changing industry.

“The Lou Reed intro of “King of the Willow Tree” is awesome. The lighthearted way Talvik sings. Unsure in vocal chords but firm in determination. It takes 30 seconds and I’m caught. Not to mention that “The Light” is the most beautiful 2010 has presented so far.”

We all know the Swedes can write a mean pop songs—but what about folk songs?  Well, one artist is nonchalantly transferring the charm and fun found in most pop songs into sweet, acoustic twang.  Sofia Talvik, brings bubbly blonde ambition to this raw and often quiet genre with a captivating breath of fresh air.  After her 2008 Lollapalooza performance, Sofia became a force in the States and went back into the studio to record her fourth album and latest release, Florida.

With a focus on drums and electronic beats, Florida brings a sense of pop fun to an otherwise sensual and introspective album.  Says Sophia, “Some songs are dark some are sunny, but all of them have a groove.  I actually wanted the album to sound like what the intro to HBO’s True Blood looks like. I think the songs have the same kind of weirdness to them as those pictures, and that’s the American south to me.”

On top of bringing this interesting take to folk, Sophia manages her fan base using pop artist strategies.  Fans can tweet at her to get her new single, she offers an acoustic version of her entire album for free with purchase of the full one and she even live streamed the recording the new album online.  The new album is currently streaming on her Web site, but until it’s released, check out some tracks from her last album Jonestown below!  Do you dig the pop/folk style?

Another really funny one is “Dead Set” where a zombie outbreak strands the housemates and production staff inside a Big Brother house, and it quickly becomes a shelter from the undead.

It’s not often that an album takes your breath away, and I hate to sound hyperbolic, but “Florida” actually has several “Oh my god!” moments of sheer beauty. Both joyful and melancholic, Sofia’s voice is the star, while perfectly twangy Nashville guitar backed by lush orchestrations, loping drums, and occasional electronic elements propel the songs along gently.While not sounding exactly like any one artist, this album… calls to mind everything from classic Nancy Sinatra to Belle & Sebastian to Rufus Wainwright. The references to the American south are plentiful and it’s fascinating to hear how the music of the region gets filtered through her Scandinavian sensibilities. Finally and equally noteworthy is the stellar production of the album, which is done entirely by Sofia herself. It’s a wonderfully effervescent album, and I know I’ll be listening to it a lot this summer.

Swedish pop maven Sofia Talvik’s “Jonestown” was an absolute favorite of ours at CD Baby. Now she’s back with an equally captivating collection of tunes. Where “Jonestown” was brooding, lush, and orchestral, “Florida” finds this stylistic chameleon flirting with the American South, voodoo, twang, moonshine, and gothic mystique.

A lot of people are so set in their ways that they know from birth which party they’ll vote for. For them it’s a matter of tradition, what their parents voted for and what class in society they belong to. But do they really know what they are voting for? What if on election day, instead of choosing a party to vote for, you’d take a quiz with a lot of different questions, and what you ended up being in that quiz would be your vote?! Even more exciting if you didn’t get to know until after the election what you actually voted for (or maybe not get to know at all?)! Not only would people vote for their true beliefs rather than what the campaigns told them or what their habits were, but the personal issue of who’s the leader for this or that party would also be totally insignificant.

This way you could also see which questions would be the most important to the people. Hmm, I think I’ll have to take some more of those quizzes.
